Live Healthy Cumberland

International Interest in
Landis Sewerage Authority

Modeled after the successful Live Healthy Vineland program, the county
forms partnerships to expand the program countywide. { BY BLAKE CHRISTY }

Megan Sheppard, health officer for the Cumberland County Health

Department, speaks during a press conference on Friday announcing
the Live Healthy Cumberland initiative. Seated are Bridgeton Mayor
Albert Kelly and County Freeholder Director Joe Derella.

he vice president of Community Relations at

Inspira Health Network, Carolyn Heckman,
made the case on Friday, July 15, as to why she
would rather not see patients: As a health system, we will treat you when you need us. But, it would be
better to insure our community is healthy, so we only see
patients during happy times, like having a baby.
It would be bad for business, Heckman joked, but
we want to live in a healthy community.
The newly launched Live Healthy Cumberland
County (LHCC) is geared to do just thatwork to create
a healthy Cumberland County. With support from the
New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute and a $550,000
partnership grant from the United Health Foundation,
LHCC will begin addressing two big issues in
Cumberland Countyobesity and chronic disease.
Megan Sheppard, health officer of the Cumberland
County Health Department, noted how important community collaboration is to improving peoples health in
Cumberland County. None of us can do this alone, she
said. We need to stop working in silos and come together
to make a difference.
Sheppard added, We need Live Healthy Cumberland
County because even though you may live in Vineland,
that does not mean that you work and play in Vineland.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundations county health
report found that Cumberland County had the highest
obesity rate in the state of New Jersey, ranking in at 21
out of 21 counties. Bridgetons Mayor Albert Kelly said, I
am looking forward to the day that we are not 21 but
rather number one. With the announcement of LHCCs

n July 11, through the Rutgers Mandela

Washington Fellows program, the
Landis Sewerage Authority (LSA)
hosted visitors from Africa to inspect and learn
about the LSA energy production facilities.
LSA has placed into service a receiving station
to accept liquid food waste, cooking fats, oils
and grease (FOG) where then it passes through
a grinder, is mixed and heated and pumped
into a digester. It is biologically broken down
to make methane gas, which goes through an
engine to produce electricity and hot water.
The remaining liquid, after heat treatment and
digestion, contains valuable nutrients (nitrogen
and phosphorus) and is utilized on the LSA
farm to grow corn, hay and straw as well as
small grains like wheat and rye.
Executive Director Dennis Palmer stated
The LSA site has an Environmental Power Park

new initiatives, the prospect of reducing

obesity in the county seems hopeful.
The Healthy Corner Store Network
(HCSN) is one of those initiatives that
may help reduce the obesity rate in the
county. HCSN was first implemented two
years ago by Live Healthy Vineland
(LHV), but now the program is expanding
to the entire county. The plan is to
increase the number of healthy food items
available at 27 local corner stores throughout Cumberland County.
Lisa Scheetz, director of
Operations/COO of the Cumberland Cape
Atlantic YMCA, said, A child who has
access to a corner store on a daily basis
consumes 360 more calories a day.
Providing easy access to healthier options
could possibly reduce that calorie intake.
The Healthy Corner Store Network
plan is to make fruits, vegetables, canned
foods, whole grains, produce and other
healthy food items more prominent on the
shelves of those 27 local corner stores.
LHCC is facilitating this by forming connections between store owners and local
farmers, using their funds to provide
refrigeration units to store the fresh produce, and educating store owners about
the products they are selling.
Millie Irizarry, community relations
liaison at the City of Vinelands Health
Department, has been pleasantly surprised by the reaction she has been getting from local store owners to the HCSN.
Irizarry says, All of the store owners
want to help to reduce the obesity rate,
but they did not know where to start.
LHCC is providing incentives for business owners to participate in the HCSN by
advertising on their behalf, providing gift
cards and coupons for shoppers, and helping store owners to get the best deals on
fruits and vegetables.
LHCC is going one step further to
reduce obesity and prevent chronic disease by promoting a healthier lifestyle in
the workplace, or as Scheetz says,
Continuing to work to meet people
where they arebe it at work or their
local corner store.
LHCC teamed up with six businesses,
including SNJ Today, who have agreed to
create wellness committees in their workplaces and brainstorm ways to promote
healthier lifestyles.
LHCC has started addressing obesity
and chronic disease in Cumberland
County, but is planning to address high
STD rates, teen pregnancy rates, childhood
poverty, mammography screening and
other health issues plaguing the county in
the future. YMCAs Scheetz says, We are
hoping to continue to develop our community partnerships and continue to grow. I

with almost 40 acres (8 MW) of solar panels, a small wind turbine and the combined
heat and power (CHP) facility utilizing
methane gas from food and treatment plant
waste. We welcome tours from many different schools and colleges, but this is our first
tour of international visitors of this nature.
The LSA also likes to utilize and pursue new and innovative technology and
projects to have a positive impact on the
environment and renewable or domesticbased energy, Palmer further stated.

Happy Birthday, Lindon

Lindon, it is God who kept you for 17
years. Walk in your purpose and fulfill
the plans that He has for your life.
Let God take first place in your life
always. You are a great son.
We love you!

Prudential Reunion Held Annually

Kakoma Mutenda, an Africa-based

entrepreneur runs a waste-to-energy business in Zambia and currently his main
product is biodiesel. His technical background is as an industrial chemist.
I am interested to visit your facility
and discuss a number of issues with you
regarding the technology, energy balance
and economics of biogas for CHP, Mr.
Mutenda stated. We have a huge power
deficit in my country so I would love to
explore the possibility of replicating your
model back home.
Kakoma Mutendais was the lead fellow
for this visit with the other fellows consisting of Tim Kipchumba from Kenya, and
Kudakwashe Mzembe from Zimbabwe.
Dr. Kevin Lyons, faculty member at the
Rutgers Business School, and the associate
director at the Rutgers Energy Institute and
the Rutgers EcoComplex, requested the
tour. There are 25 Fellows associated with
Rutgers this summer, they are all professionals in their home countries some engineers, some business folks, but all have an
interest in the energy sector, said Dr. Lyons.
The Mandela Washington Fellowship
for Young African Leaders, begun in 2014,
is the flagship program of the Young
African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that
empowers young people through academic
coursework, leadership training, and networking. In 2016, the Fellowship will provide 1,000 outstanding young leaders from
Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to
hone their skills at a U.S. higher education
institution with support for professional
development after they return home.
The Fellows, who are between the ages
of 25 and 35, have established records of
accomplishment in promoting innovation
and positive change in their organizations,
institutions, communities, and countries.
In 2015, Fellows represented all 49 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. I

Anthony Chesebro is accustomed to having a

lot on his plate. The 20-year-old recently earned
three associate degreesin Engineering,
Mathematics and Computer Scienceas a member of Cumberland County Colleges Class of 2016.
Prior to attending Cumberland for two years,
Chesebro received a homeschool education from
his parents using curriculum developed by the
California-based Mother of Divine Grace School.
His two younger sisters are also homeschooled
by his parents.
Interested in all things mechanical since early
childhood, Chesebro credits homeschooling for
giving him a good background to pursue his
interests. Being homeschooled, I was unsure
how well I would fit into a college environment,
he said.
It didnt take long, however, for Chesebro to
become a familiar face on campus. The Millville
resident quickly immersed himself in college organizations such as Student
Senate, fencing club, math club, and computer science club, as well as induction
into the Phi Theta Kappa, Mu Alpha Theta and Alpha Beta Gamma honor societies, and continuing his studies in piano and violin.
Somehow, Chesebro also found time to tutor fellow CCC students. Tutoring
gives me an opportunity to share what I have learned with others, he said.
One of my most rewarding experiences while attending Cumberland was participating in SPLI (Student Pathways Leadership Institute). The program helped
me to become more involved in the community and made me realize that education is more than just my courses.
Chesebro said he chose to attend Cumberland County College because it was
close to home and familiar, as his father taught computer courses for the colleges Workforce and Community Education division.
Being in groups in high school prepared me for college, Chesebro added. His
high school activities included church youth group, an online Latin Club for homeschooled students, and playing violin in the Rowan University Youth Orchestra.
My first job was a two-year period playing violin in the pit orchestra at
Sacred Heart High School, he said proudly.
A college physics class reinforced Chesebros decision to go into engineering
field by demonstrating how theory blends with application. And the use of discreet math skills made him decide to add a major in math.
In September, Chesebro will pursue a bachelors degree as a Biomedical
Engineering major, concentrating in Neural Engineering, at Columbia University. He
explained that neural engineering uses engineering techniques to study, and possibly repair, the bodys central nervous system circuitry and disorders of the brain.
Cumberland County College has been changing the perception of where students can go after attending a community college, said CCC President Dr. Yves
Salomon-Fernandez. What we know is that financially savvy students start at
Cumberland then go on to elite universities, including Ivy League schools. We
are very proud to count Anthony among our alumni and are certain that he will
thrive at Columbia.
There is always time to become more involved because by joining with others in common endeavors, it enhances ones own experience, Chesbro said.
Everyone reaches their destination richer than when they began.

This Tombstone could be called The
Saloon Too Tough to Die. Its been a
western-style wayside stop through several
changes of management.
The saloon has been open about two
months under new owners Dan and Elden
Evans, and business is picking up with the
help of Chef Eric Rempfer.
Dan Evans was about to open the place
when his partner bowed out, leaving Dans
dad, Elden as a newly recruited partner.
Hes actually a systems software implementation analyst, but he keeps the books and
manages the back of the house at Tombstone.
Ill tell you, we had no problem getting
distributors to come down here. They all
know Dan, and that makes my job easier,
Elden said.
His son has indeed been in the restaurant game in South Jersey for decades.
I started out as a bouncer at an under21 club, Dan said. After that job, he stayed
in the business. I did everythingdishwasher, prep, bartender and DJ. While I
worked I tried to learn everything about
running a bar.
Dan is also a singer-songwriter in the
local band, Southern Cut. We sing country,
southern rock and some classic rock. We
have a pretty big following.
Theres live music at the Tombstone
every Friday and Saturday night.
Dan was without a chef one month
before opening. He interviewed some, but
no one shared his vision.
I wanted to merge honky-tonk foods
with a twist.
Chef Eric Rempfer was available, back
in Jersey from an extended gig at a French
bistro in California. The two put their
heads together and came up with the
Tombsone menu, heavy on the bacon and
burgers, and light with Caesar salad with
Parmesan frittes, grilled Sriracha shrimp
quesadillas, and scallops and shrimp in
white wine cream sauce.
I dreamed a dream. Eric made it a
reality, Dan said. Were heading in a
good direction. Its a good atmosphere, and
were getting regulars from the local area,

his months Fourth Friday event

is coming up this Friday and
therell be dining and shopping
on Landis Avenue from 5 to
7:30 p.m. and thenat the mini-park on
the southwest corner of Landis Avenue
and the Boulevardfunctional movement
exercises from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. sponsored
by CrossFit47. Starting at 8:30 p.m., join us
for a free showing of Steven Spielbergs
hit film Jurassic World. The rain location
of the fitness program and film will be
Landis MarketPlace, 631 E. Landis
Avenue. Bring a lawn chair or towel.
Parents must stay with their children.
Main Street Vineland is partnering with
the Vineland Health Departments Live
Heathy Vineland for the Fitness and Film
series through September. The film series
is made possible through sponsorship by
the Cumberland County Cultural and
Heritage Commission, with SNJ Today as
the media sponsor.
Also, you can satisfy your karaoke passion at Friends and Family Diner, 601 E.
Landis Avenue, at their karaoke night
from 7 to 10 p.m., weather permitting. It
will feature hot dogs and hamburgers on
an outdoor grill, as well as soft drinks. In
case of inclement weather, it will be held
indoors. In addition to this, an open house
will take place each Fourth Friday at The
Spot, at 618 E. Landis Avenue, from 6 to 9
p.m., featuring music by 16-year-old
Millville native Kennedy Shaw, caricatures by George Perez, food, beer and
wine, as well as lots of great discounts,
giveaways and promotions.
I say all this not only to urge you to
come out to our great Fourth Friday
events, to but show you the power and
value of sponsorships and partnerships.
For this one initiative, we have as partners in the Vineland Health Department
and, through them, CrossFit47, as well as
relationships with the Cumberland

County Cultural and Heritage

Commission, and SNJ Today. The Fourth
Friday series, itself, is also a combined
effort by several downtown businesses.
Partnershipswhether theyre sponsorships, grants, donations, or just informal working relationshipsaccomplish
much by making big initiatives possible
and bringing to the table a variety of
organizations to share in the success and
the interest.
They are also win-win propositions, as
they benefit us by bringing needed funding and support to programs that we want
to present. They also benefit the sponsor
or partner, as they give that organization
added publicity and exposure. So, everyone benefits.
We build partnerships by directly
approaching organizations, speaking
before groups, and by the organizations
hearing about what we do and wanting to
join us.
We have a lot of initiatives that we are
planning in our four teamsOrganization,
Design, Promotions, and Economic
Vitalityand were looking to expand our
base of support for these plans.
Wed love to have you join us in planning and executing of these projects and,
if you are from an organization thats
interested in working with us, wed welcome you as a partner in some capacity.

For thousands of New Jersey kids, summertime means vacations, camp, no homework, and fun. But for many others, the
summer months mean they will no longer
eat healthy meals at their public schools
through reduced- and free-lunch programs.
Several local food pantriesand regional
Boscovs storesare trying to combat the
summer slide and help prevent local youth
and their families from suffering from food
insecurity. The Salvation Army of Vineland
will be collecting non-perishable food at
the Boscovs Cumberland Mall location
throughout the month of July. People wishing to donate to these worthwhile organizations can find food collection bins at
Boscovs in high-traffic areas, or can give
their donations to any Boscovs associate to
place in the donation boxes.
The Vineland Salvation Army chapter
helps to overcome the barriers that lead to
food insecurity; Salvation Army volunteers
help area residents address educational,
housing and employment needs, as well.
Local residents are encouraged to consider cleaning out their pantries, and
donating to these local food pantries during
this summer food collection drive, now
through July 31, at Boscovs Cumberland
Mall (3849 South Delsea Drive, Vineland).
Donations can be dropped off during normal operating hours.

Agriculture Secretary Tom

Vilsack recently signed a
proclamation declaring
August 7-13, 2016, as
"National Farmers Market
Week." This year marks the
17th annual National
Farmers Market Week to
honor and celebrate the
important role that farmers
markets play in local
economies.
"Farmers markets are an important part of strong local and regional food
systems that connect farmers with new customers and grow rural economies.
In many areas, they are also expanding access to fresh, healthy food for people of all income levels," said Secretary Vilsack. "National Farmers Market
Week recognizes the growth of these markets and their role in supporting both
urban and rural communities."
Throughout the week, USDA officials will celebrate at farmers market locations across the country. On Saturday, August 6, Elanor Starmer, the
Administrator of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS)which conducts research, provides technical assistance, and awards grants to support
local and regional food systemswill kick off the week visiting a farmers market and wrap up the week at USDA's own farmers market in Washington, D.C.,
on Friday, August 12.
"Farmers markets are a gathering place where you can buy locally produced
food, and at the same time, get to know the farmer and story behind the food
you purchase," said Administrator Starmer. "These types of markets improve
earning potential for farmers and ranchers, building stronger community ties
and access to local foods."

I Jersey Reflections

Summertime Silver Screen

Delights

Atlantic City is mesmerizingly captured by the 1972

film The King of Marvin Gardens.

From barbecues to Jersey produce to a healthy

eggplant casseroleenjoy.
Summertime barbecues are my favorite
fare! I try to hit as many chicken barbecues
as I can at the various churches and clubs.
And if there is nothing like that going on,
then I hit either Joes Chicken on Route 40
in Buena, or travel a bit down the road
north for Bills BBQ and their fabulous ribs
with a side of homemade potato salad and
coleslaw. They are only open Friday
through Sunday but are worth the wait.
They are right across from Downstown
Airport in Newfield; call first to make sure
the ribs are ready856-562-5221.
I also like burgers on the grill and you
cant beat the fresh ground meat from
Mains Meat on Main Road in Vineland.
Ive been visiting the local farmers markets, too, and the produce out there is just
incredible. Bergamos Garden Market on
Chestnut and Lincoln avenues has fresh
local produce right from their farm, but
also many great baked goods and specialty
food items. Ill bet you wont leave without
one of Saralyns pies! And then on Sundays,
right around 3 p.m. when I am in the mood
for a nice piece of carrot cake or pumpkin
rollade, I head on over to Bertuzzis Farm
Market on Tuckahoe Road; their little bakery is just wonderful. A great selection of
goodies for afternoon tea.
One of my favorite things in the summer
is eggplant. Here is a unique use for eggplant, an Eggplant Meatball Caserole.

1 eggplant, cut into four 3/4-inch planks

2 1/3 cup fresh breadcrumbs from a

Sprinkle eggplant lightly with salt, put

in a colander, let stand for 30 minutes, then
rinse and squeeze out excess moisture.
Saute eggplant planks in EVOO until just
lightly browned on both sides, cool, then
transfer to food processor. Add 1 1/3 cups of
the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and the
minced garlic, pulse until a chunky paste,
then transfer to a bowl. Season with salt and
pepper, stir in egg white, chill until cold,
Form into about 12 balls, then coat with
remaining crumbs; let set up in refrigerator for a couple of hours. Then lightly
saute the cold meatballs in EVOO until
browned, drain, then add to a casserole
dish and spoon sauce over meatballs and
top with mozzarella cheese and bake in
400 degree oven for 15 minutes until bubbly and cheese is golden! Top with red

mistake, which Parker Brothers continued

when it acquired the rights.
Filmed in the early months of 1972, The
King of Marvin Gardens catches the
nuances of a town at its nadir, its opulent
hotels an endangered species and its landscapes in need of a cosmetic makeover. The
British film magazine Sight and Sound
referred to the movies locale as a playground for the class-cultured rich, now
grinding down into seaside vulgarity.
Amidst its murky introspective story, The
King of Marvin Gardens contains an
unflinching view of the landmarks left languishing in the wake of a downturn that
began slowly after World War II. The film
prominently features the MarlboroughBlenheim Hotel, which was built at the start
of the 20th century and where much of the
movie was shot, as well as the original
Atlantic City Convention Hall in a sequence
that takes the viewer inside the building
where the main characters mount a mock
Miss America pageant in the very venue
that housed this beauty contest for decades.
Convention Hall had been a vision of
Atlantic City political boss Enoch Nucky
Johnson, who wanted to continue the
influx of tourists into the town during the
off-season by providing a facility that could
conveniently accommodate large conventions. Construction began in 1926 and it
took three years to complete the structure
that, according to online sources, contains
one of the largest interior spaces in the
world. The venue was later rechristened
Boardwalk Hall after a $90 million restoration was completed in 2001.
During the shoot, the MarlboroughBlenheim Hotel, which serves as the fictional Essex Carlton Hotel, and Convention
Hall became playgrounds for the actors and
their director, who also utilized the off-season beach, boardwalk and streets to create
what he called his own geography of the
film. One of the unexpected examples of
local flavor occurs with the appearance of
the Mainland Regional High School
Marching Band of the 1971-72 school year
strutting down the boardwalk.
Shortly after principal photography was
completed for The King of Marvin Gardens,
the Traymore Hotel was demolished, the
first sacrifice to a new era of the town. I

1854, Atlantic City quickly
added hotels where families could vacation for
weeks at a time. In their earliest forms,
these facilities were cottages by the beach
that served as boarding houses, but over
the ensuing decades more palatial structures like the Traymore Hotel and
Chalfonte-Haddon Hall became commonplace. Such success led to the refurbishment and expansion of establishments like
the Dennis Hotel in the early 1920s.
By the early 1970s, however, Atlantic
City was not in the best of shape. Its hotels
had aged and were not as regal as they had
once been and the boardwalk no longer
played host to the bustling crowds of earlier times. Its this setting that is mesmerizingly captured by the 1972 film The King of
Marvin Gardens.
Directed by Bob Rafelson, the movie stars
Jack Nicholson in an unusually low-key performance as David Staebler, a late-night
Philadelphia radio monologist. The arrival
of his brother Jason (Bruce Dern) and his
entourage of Sally (Ellen Burstyn) and
Jessica (Julia Anne Robinson) sets in motion
a pipedream in the guise of a business deal
that plunges David into an unfamiliar world.
According to Patrick McGilligans
Nicholson biography, Jacks Life, screenwriter Jacob Brackman, a former Atlantic
City resident, was approached by Rafelson
to develop a script that would showcase his
star. Apparently regretting the commercial
appeal of his previous collaboration with
Nicholson, the acclaimed Five Easy Pieces,
the director was now aiming for a film
without a solitary crowd-pleasing element. The result was The King of Marvin
Gardens and, while Rafelsons movies,
which favor character over plot, are
acquired taste, this one is worth the effort.
The title of the film is derived from the
original version of the Monopoly board
game, which misspelled the property name
as Marvin Gardens. The actual location in
Margate is Marven Gardens, a housing area
whose name is taken to be a combination of
the first syllables of Margate and Ventnor,
which border each other. Online sources
claim the error is attributed to Charles and
Olive Todd. When they taught Charles
Darrow the game, he designed a version and
patented it in 1935, retaining the spelling
