HOW TO USE YOUR

NEUROPSYCHOLOGY OF LEADERSHIP
STUDY GUIDE AND AUDIO
This personal Study Guide has been designed to assist you in
using the audio sessions and worksheets to learn the process
behaviors, and principles contained in The Neuropsychology of
Leadership.

PROGRAM GOAL
The major goal of The Neuropsychology of Leadership program is
to introduce you to a scientifically proven, easy-to-learn
discipline that will allow you to systematically and progressively
acquire the characteristics and habits of leader. In this program,
you will learn a powerful formula that will allow you to inspire
and lead a group of people to help you achieve your goals and
vision (an image of an ideal future state that currently does not
exist). This personalized study guide has been designed to assist
you in learning the wealth of information that is contained in this
program and in mastering the techniques that will progressively
move you upward to the ranks of leadership status.

PROCESS
Listen to the narration at the points suggested in the study guide and then
practice each of the skills presented. There are worksheets in the study guide
for you to use in practicing each of the skills and for you to record your goals
and your progress toward those goals. You may, of course, listen to the
audio again and again to glean any additional information and guidance
necessary to make the principles contained in the program a permanent part
of your daily routine.
Each section of your study guide is designed to correspond to a numbered
audio session. For example, you will find the study guide exercises for Audio
Session 1, "The Essence of Leadership: Your Key to Personal Power" listed
under the same number and title in your study guide.
In each study guide section, there's a combination of explanations

SYBERVISION
and step-by-step instructions for mastering the material presented. Each
section is divided into the following components:
OBJECTIVES: A list of the information and skills you
will have mastered after listening to the tape and following
the instructions in your study guide.
BACKGROUND: A summary of the main points mentioned
on the audio.
PRACTICE: Exercises that will help you learn the new
information and practice the skills that you will learn in
each audio session.
POINTS TO REMEMBER: A list of some important
ideas you learned from the audio session.
PROGRESS CHECK: An exercise that will help you
recall the important ideas and skills you learned on the
audio. The "Progress Check" is designed to give
feedback on your performance so that you can continue
to improve it.

HERES WHAT TO DO
1. Preview the titles of the tapes designated for each segment of the study
guide.
2. Preview the content of the study guide.
3. Set aside a specific block of time each day to work through the tapes and
exercises. This is your investment in YOU, so keep the agreement on the
time.
4. For each audio session you will follow a similar pattern of working through
the study guide, listening to the tape and doing the practices. This
sequence is outlined for you here:
a. Read the Objective.
b. Follow the instructions in the Practice Section.
c. Do the Progress Check.

SYBERVISION
5. When you have completed one audio session, schedule a time when you
will work through the next audio session.

SYBERVISION

SESSION I

THE ESSENCE OF LEADERSHIP:

YOUR KEY TO PERSONAL POWER
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session you will be able to:

Define leadership.
Describe the problems associated with a lack of leadership.
Destroy the myths about leadership.
Describe the benefits of effective leadership.

BACKGROUND
Your motivation to participate in this program probably comes from
a need or desire to learn how to attain leadership, the ability to turn a
dream, a vision into reality, with and through the help of other people.
At this point you may be acutely aware of the problems associated with
a lack of leadership. Work efforts are scattered and undirected,
organizations fail to grow and learn, and workers themselves are
dispirited and indifferent.
Strong leadership is the key to effecting change in any group, from
the smallest club to the multi-national corporation. With it, you can
accomplish anything. Without it, nothing worthwhile nor lasting can be
achieved.
By incorporating the research of leadership experts Warren Bennis
and Burt Nanus into an effective, easy-to-understand and apply
program, Leaders: The Strategies of Taking Charge enables you to
learn the skills of effective leadership.
The benefits of attaining leadership may seem obvious, however we
may have thought of some that you have not yet considered. These will
be described on the tape, and later you will personalize them to meet
your own needs. Review this list to dwell on the positive outcomes that
will be in store for you:
Leadership is a skill that can be learned and integrated into your
own life.
With leadership you can guide and influence the direction of any
conceivable group effort.

SYBERVISION

You can turn your own vision of the future into reality, with the
help and cooperation of others.
Leadership enables you to inspire and motivate others, so they
once again feel positive about their work.
Through leadership you will rediscover your own potential for
growth, your zest for work, and your affinity with others.
Effective leadership can promote the growth of the individual,
the group, the organization.

PRACTICE
1. Re-read the objectives for this session.
2. Listen to Audio Session I, "The Essence of Leadership: Your Key To
Personal Power."
3. After you have listened to the audio, use the space provided to write a
brief description of what leadership means to you.

4. In your own words write a brief statement of the problems associated

with the lack of leadership.

5. If you like, listen to Audio Session I again.

6. Briefly describe five of the benefits you and others will derive when
you develop leadership skills.
1.
2.

5.

POINTS TO REMEMBER
Leaders are neither born nor created by rare circumstances.
Leadership is a skill that can be learned.
Leadership is not the same as management
There are many leadership opportunities around you; there is much
leadership potential within you.
Leadership unlocks your innate power to change and transform that
which has become stagnant and unworkable.

PROGRESS CHECK
Answer each question by filling in the blank space below with the correct
answer.
1. Write a brief statement about the single most significant problem
you are now experiencing due to lack of leadership.

2. Describe a person you know who has leadership skills and analyze
his/her success.

3. Now, list some of the benefits your organization will experience

SYBERVISION
when you develop the ability to lead.

SYBERVISION

SESSION II

Unveiling the Power:

The Ten Dominant Characteristics
of the Effective Leader
OBJECTIVES

At the end of this session you will be able to:

Describe the ten dominant characteristics of the effective

leader.
Compare your current behavior against the model to
establish areas where you might seek improvement.

BACKGROUND
People who have achieved leadership goals become inspirational
examples or role models for others to follow. How they became
successful leadersthe strategies, skills, thinking and behavioral
patterns they usedcreates a blueprint for people who want to achieve
what the role model achieved.
Models of leadership blaze the trail of possibility for usbreaking down
the barriers of tradition and time. We think, "If he or she could do it,
then so can I."
In this Session, we have identified the 10 dominant characteristics that
mark change-effecting leaders. These are behaviors others have learned
in order to accomplish their personal and organizational goals.
In developing the model, the criterion we used was excellence in the
field of leadership, whether in the private or public sector, including
business, politics, and the arts. The characteristics we noted are not
specific to any one professionthey are. instead, specific to one type of
individualhe or she who has been able to transform others through
expert leadership ability.
Once you become familiar with the characteristics of the successful
leader, you'll be able to adapt your own life to include these positive
values.

SYBERVISION

PRACTICE
1. Listen to Audio Session II, "Unveiling The Mystery: The Ten Dominant
Characteristics of a Leader." On the form below, as you listen, list
the ten dominant characteristics as they are described.

10.
2. The Personal Assessment Form in this section lists the ten characteristics of the change-effective leader. Each characteristic is presented
in the same order as in the audio narration. Each is graded on a
scale of one through seven. Read all the characteristics, positive and
negative, listed on the worksheet. Do not mark on the form at this
time, just review the listed characteristics.
3. Listen again to the ten characteristics listed on Audio Session II. As you
listen to the characteristic being described, contrast and compare where
you currently stand in relation to the described characteristics, behaviors
and habits. Use the rating table as a tool for personal measurement and
insight. As you listen to each description say to yourself: "I am more like
the positive description" or "I am more like the negative description." Then
determine the degree to which you currently exhibit the habit or behavior.
Finally, circle the appropriate number on the scale that corresponds to your
response.
Pause the audio if you require extra time at any point. Don't be afraid to
be completely honest in your self-assessment. You are the
beneficiary
of your own honesty.

develop. If you scored between 50 and 60, this program will help you
sharpen your already strong leadership abilities. If you score above 60
you're in great shape, but will nonetheless benefit from the scientific
presentation of the techniques we offer in this SyberVision program.

SYBERVISION

POINTS TO REMEMBER

The key to the Self-Assessment process is honesty.

The SyberVision program you have undertaken is a dynamic process

of self-discovery and self-creation.

When you have completed the Self-Assessment form you will have
completed the stated objectives of this Session. Please schedule an
appointment with yourself to begin Session III.

SYBERVISION

SESSION III

The Four Master Keys

of Power: The New
Psychology of Leadership
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session you will be able to:

Describe the four-point strategy for leadership success.

Define empowerment

BACKGROUND
In Session III you will learn a four-point strategy for leadership
success that is based on extensive research and careful analysis of
classic and contemporary leaders. Taken from the work of leadership
experts Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus, this strategy is the heart of
our leadership program and of your own effort to acquire leadership
abilities.
You will be introduced to each of our strategies: Vision; Communication;
Positioning; and Self-Management, and you will see how they work
together to enable you to lead and empower others. In this Session you
will also see your first examples of how successful leaders illustrate
these points in their own work.

PRACTICE

SYBERVISION

POINTS TO REMEMBER

There is one important strategy for leadership success.

The strategy is: Vision + Communication + Positioning + SelfManagement = Empowerment.

Vision is a mental picture of a desired future state.

Communication requires a meaningful exchange of ideas about the

vision.

Positioning requires you to act on your dreams.

Self-Management requires that you lead yourself before you attempt

to lead others

SESSION IV

The Visionary Leader: How

to Create a Vision of the Future
OBJECTIVES

At the end of this session you will be able to:

Define Purpose.
Define Vision.
Develop your own leadership purpose.
Transform your purpose into a sensory-rich vision.

BACKGROUND
Determining your vision, what you want to achieve with your
leadership abilities, can be a difficult task. You have so many choices
and opportunities that it's sometimes confusing.
Yet a clear, compelling vision is the cornerstone of leadership. It gives
you a specific direction and inspires others to join forces with your
effort.
In this Session you will learn, through a multi-step process, how to
analyze the many options available to you and select the one purpose
which motivates you the most.
Besides being a powerful tool in determining your leadership goals,
this process will help you in making any kind of decisionfrom the
smallest to the most important.
With a clear vision of the future, you're well on your way to becoming
a leader. You've discovered what you really want to do with your
leadership skills and have laid the foundation for change and
transformation.

PRACTICE

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session you will be able to:

Define Communication
Explain the role of Communication in our four part strategy
for leadership success.
Describe the various ways in which leaders communicate.
Develop a sense of your own powers of communication.

BACKGROUND
Part of what separates the leader from the dreamer is the leaders
particular ability to communicate his vision to others in ways that are
powerful and inspiring. It is through communication that the leader
attracts and holds followers.
Skills of communication are varied and they can be learned and
developed. Each leader has her or her own personal style and ability.
There are particular methods of communication that will work for you and
can be developed with practices and attention.

PRACTICE
1. Listen to Audio Session V, Commitment Through Communication:
How To Inspire Followers With Your Vision.
2. Write the name of a leader who you feel communicated his or her
messages clearly and forcefully and indicate what attracted you to
the leaders style.

the only way to obtain the trust of your followers.

Your method of communication is less important than the power

with which you convey your message.

Through communication you create meaning for people. It is the

only way they will align themselves behind the goals that can fulfill
your vision.

PROGRESS CHECK
1. Write a brief statement of your own strengths in communication.

SESSION VI

Dynamic Positioning:
How to Gain Mass Support
for Your Dream
OBJECTIVES

At the end of this session you will be able to:

Define Positioning.
Describe how Positioning works with Vision and
Communication.
Explain the areas in which Positioning must occur.

BACKGROUND
So far you have identified your Vision and learned how to
communicate that Vision to others. This session introduces you to
the "action "phase of our strategy for leadership. You will see how
you can plan and design the environment so it becomes a place
where your Vision can happen. You will learn which circumstances
must be changed, which situations must be modified, before your
goals can be realized. In a sense, positioning requires you to create
a climate-a climate most conducive to the fulfillment of your dream.

PRACTICE
1. Listen to the narrator on Audio Session VI, "Dynamic Positioning:
How To Gain Mass Support For Your Dream."
2. As the narrator describes them, write down the three different
levels on which positioning must occur.

4. Listen to Audio Session VI as Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus discuss

positioning and leadership with SyberVision founder Steven DeVore.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

Positioning is the set of actions necessary to implement your

dream.

A Vision remains a Vision until you act on it.

You must establish a niche for your vision both within your
organization and outside the organization.

Effective positioning promotes credibility and trust.

To be effective, positioning must be consistent, reliable, and

harmonious.

SYBERVISION

PROGRESS CHECK
1. Write a brief description of how successful positioning strengthens
your leadership role.

2. Describe the links between Vision and Positioning, and Communication

and Positioning.

SYBERVISION

SESSION VII

The Mastery of Self:

How to Lead Others Through
Self-Mastery and Example
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session you will be able to:

Define self-management.
Describe positive self-regard.
Explore the attitudes towards failure essential to
successful leadership.

BACKGROUND
The work of leaders relies heavily on human interactions and
cooperative group efforts. To assure the most creative, productive
results, your relationship with followers must be as mature and
trusting as possible.
There are human relations skills that can be developed by anyone.
In this Session you'll learn to recognize those skillsthe very
special ways of behaving and interacting with others that contribute
to your ability to lead.
You'll learn ways to manage your own thoughts and actions so that
working relationships with others are mutually fulfilling and help
support the realization of your Vision.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

Leadership is an intimate, personal business that relies on your

ability to interact in healthy, productive ways with other people.

Positive self-regard leads to the positive other-regard that will

enhance your relationships.

With continued self-examination you can develop consistent

self-regard. With examination of your life experiences you can
develop a positive attitude towards mistakes and setbacks.

PROGRESS CHECK
1. Write a brief description of how Self-Management links with
Positioning; with Communication; and with Vision in your
leadership work.

SESSION VIII

The Learning Environment:

How to Get the Most Out
of Your Followers
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session you will be able to:

Differentiate between maintenance and innovative

learning.
List the six types of innovative learning.
Describe the five characteristics of the learning
organization.
Describe the four ways the leader can stimulate
learning.

BACKGROUND
In this Session you will see how leaders are expert learners and how
they transfer that interest in learning to a larger organization. Once
they have created a climate conducive to learning, leaders can reap
the rewards of a creative and innovative staff.
There are special ways a leader can encourage his or her followers to
learn and there are special ways to encourage the organization as a
whole. You will learn how to use certain techniques and strategies that
enable each member of the organization to fulfill their greatest
potential for growth while contributing to the fulfillment of the Vision.

PRACTICE
1. Listen to Session VIII, "The Learning Environment: How To Get The
Most Out Of Your Followers."

of 30 and above indicates that your organization values learning.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

Leaders are perpetual learners. Learning is the fuel that sparks new
understanding, new ideas, and new challenges.

Leaders are expert at learning in an organizational context. And they

are able to inspire others to learn in the same context.

The success of an organization relies primarily on a sustained ability

to learn and re-learn.

SYBERVISION

PROGRESS CHECK
1. Write a brief description of how an ability to learn will contribute to
your success as a leader.

2. Explain how an organization that learns is an organization that can

best support your Vision.

SESSION IX

The Management of Change:

How to Create a Climate for
Your Vision to Take Root
OBJECTIVES

Identify the three types of organizations.

Determine how changes occur within each type.
Understand the relationship between change and the realization of
your goals.

BACKGROUND
Every vision, by its very nature, will demand change. Some organizations
are more amenable to change than others. In this Session you will learn
about three distinct organizational typeshow each one functions and
operates, how each one responds to change and innovation.
By understanding which techniques work best in your organization, you
will be prepared to introduce the ideas and procedures which most
guarantee success.
The principles of leadership apply to every organization, whatever its
style, but the leader must first be aware of a structure, a "social
architecture," that pre-exists and will have profound impact on the
leader's attempts at change. In this Session you will discover the
architecture of your own organization.

PRACTICE
1. Listen to Audio Session IX, The Management of Change: How to
Create a Climate For Your Vision To Take Root."
2. As you listen to the narrator, write down adjectives that apply to
each of the three architectures. You may use the narrator's words or
your own.

4. Total the results of the above graph and determine whether you
have a majority of circles in one column. This will indicate which
social architecture describes your own organization. If you do not
have a majority, your organization may be a combination of types.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

If an organization is to be transformed, the social architecture

must be revamped. The effective leader needs to articulate new
values in place of old.

A leader who misunderstands his or her organization may create

more harm than good.

Being informed about the architecture of your organization

equips you with the necessary tools to change it.

PROGRESS CHECK
1. Describe how your Vision will affect the social architecture of your
organization.

2. Review Session VI on "Positioning: How To Create A Niche For Your

Dream." After learning about social architecture, you may have new
ideas about internal changes that will need to take place. Write them
down in the space provided below.

3. Schedule your time to complete Session X.

SESSION X

The Final Transformation:

Your Vision Become Reality
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session you will be able to:

Understand the ultimate goal of leadership.

Describe the difference between change and transformation.
List the ways in which transformation is achieved.

BACKGROUND
Leadership is, in itself, not an ends, but a means to an end. It is a way
by which you can achieve goals far greater than an individual, acting
alone, can ever hope to achieve. When leadership is at its best, all those
involved feel a sense of "magic" of almost divine mission. The leader's
vision, which aligns and encompasses the entire organization, serves as
the catalyst for individual growth and organizational transformation.
This transformation, in which all are compelled to stretch their limits,
to expand and learn new skills, and to discover new truths about themselves and each other, is the ultimate goal of the dedicated leader. The
leader's vision becomes the vehicle by which all, including the leader,
become aware of new capabilities and strengths.

PRACTICE
1. Listen to Audio Session X, "The Final Transformation: Your Vision
Becomes Reality."

2. After listening to the narrator describe it, write in your own words
the key characteristics of transformative leadership.

SYBERVISION

3. Consider ways in which you will be personally transformed by the

pursuit and achievement of your vision. Write them in the space
provided below.

4. Consider ways in which your organization will be transformed if

your vision is realized. Write them in the spaces below.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

Personal success is only a by-product of leadership. The supreme

effect of leadership is its ability to give new meaning and learning to
individuals who operate within a group.

It is possible, with adequate understanding and persistent effort, to

transform any organization.

Management, leadership, and transformative leadership are three

very different functions. You now have the preparation and understanding to strive for transformative leadership, the one of greatest
service to all.

PROGRESS CHECK
1. Write a brief description of how Vision, Communication, Positioning,
and Self-Management are each tools of transformation.

2. List and describe in your own words the reasons you want to be a
leader or wish to strengthen your leadership abilities.

SYBERVISION

3. The ultimate progress check, of course, is when you see yourself able
to call forth the best from within an organization and its people, by
summoning your own abilities of strong, inspiring and benevolent
leadership.

CONCLUDING REMARKS
