Top Hitters
Cole Schmitz: Good
middle of the order guy.
Type of guy you want up in
a big spot.
Adam Backes: On base
more than hes not and always a threat once hes there.
Kyle Budde: Since being moved to the top of our
order hes also been on base
a bunch.
Top Pitchers
DJ Schleicher: Been
very successful this year
throwing strikes and getting
ground balls.
Andy Bauer: Big game
pitcher who, when hes on, is
a tough guy to face.
Alex Budde: Harder
throwing right-hander who,
when he works ahead, is
very effective.
Top Defenders:
Adam Backes: In a
league full of great shortstops, he ranks right up there
with the best of them.
Cole Schmitz: Very reliable catcher who is a backstop in every sense of the
phrase.
Cory Niewind: Defensively the best first basemen
in our league in my opinion.
Team Strengths:
Richmond hits the
ball very well. A nice combo of guys getting on for

guys who can find a gap.
The team is good defensively and its pitchers have given
the Royals a chance to win
for the most part, which is
something all teams strive
for.
Challenges
Throwing strikes has
been tough from time to
time. Not necessarily a direct correlation to walks, but
falling behind in counts and
making things more advantageous for opposing batters. Defensively, the team
has occasionally given extra
outs which never helps.
Best Game from Manager
I think our July 1 game
at St Martin could be argued
as our best game. Every
time they scored we came
back and matched them. Just
showed good character on
our guys part.

Richmonds Dave Rausch

is Hall of Fame bound
by HERMAN LENSING
STAFF WRITER

Richmond-It probably came as no surprise

to his friends, family and
community members that
Dave (Ponch) Rausch
of Richmond has been
named to the Minnesota
Baseball Association Hall
of Fame. His service to the
game as a player, manager
and umpire has made him
a fixture on the central
Minnesota amateur baseball scene ever since the
1960s.
That service is just
one element of a person
who has always worked
for his community, church
and school. Rausch has
lived his entire life in the
Richmond-Cold Spring
area is well known that
area. He started playing
amateur baseball in 1963
with Rockville, but a year
later he found himself in
Richmond uniform.
Some teammates that
I played with in Rockville
(Vern Brisse and Gary
Steil) suggested that I join
them in Richmond next
year (1964). said Rausch

They said they get good

crowds and there is good
competition in the Stearns
County League.
Rausch initially said
no thanks. He considered
playing with the Cold
Spring Springers, but they
needed a shortstop. Rausch had played catcher and
outfield, something Richmond could use, so he
decided to head to Richmond.
For someone as associated with the Royals
as he is, it was surprising
to learn that some questioned his eligibility. It
was not that he was too far
from Richmond, but some
thought he might live too
close (within a mile) of
the Cold Spring diamond.
Someone went and
measured and found I was
about 15 feet short of a
mile, he said. They approved my eligibility, but
I received a lot of heckling
on the field. Rausch recalled names such as, the
import.
At Richmond he became a fixture in the lineup, first as a player then a
manager. He was a strong

force behind the plate,

both as a catcher and at
the bat. He later moved
to the first base position
and his batting average
was roughly .333 during
his playing years. Twice
he played in state tournaments; Richmond participated in 1972 and 1974.
He played until 1992, then
managed the team from
1983 to 1997 and then
came back to manage in
1999.
In that time, Richmond made six additional
trips to the state tournament and was always a
team nobody overlooked
in the Stearns County
League. In 1998, they finished as runner-up in the
Class C state tournament.
The team was comprised
of many players that he
played, coached and managed.
That he was able to
stay in baseball that long
came because it is an interest shared by his family. His family helped at
the ballpark and were his
number one fans. They
made it a family tradition.

St. Martin-The Martins have been close to being a strong team the past
few years, but they always
seemed to be missing
something.
This year they may
have found it in Taylor
Holthaus. An Albany High
School graduate and seasoned player, Holthaus
has given Stearns County
League opponents more to
worry about then a handful of Schlangens and
Kyle Lieser. Through the
first 10 games, he led the
team in hitting and pushed
13 runs across the plate,
four of them with home
runs.
He has a little pop
in his bat, said manager
Carl Lieser.
Holthaus came to St.
Martin after a career with
the Avon Lakers of the
Victory League.
I was with Avon
for nine years, he said.

Ruth, Legion and VFW
and officiates at Rocori
activities including: basketball and baseball. He
was involved in football
as well.
Im retired now, but
I still work part-time including cutting grass at
the Richmond city parks
in the summer, he said.
Richmond grew a lot
in those years. We put in
a water treatment plant,
brought a medical clinic to
town and a hockey arena.
There were also major improvements to the Richmond ballpark, including
new dugouts, new press
boxes, a grass infield,
sprinkling system, fences
and electronic scoreboard.

I thought Id try
something new. I would

competition, he said. A
lot these guys had played
for Albany. Im good buddies with Schlangens and
Liesers.
From the start he has
had an impact. He had at

the first seven games and

the Martins to a 5-2 record.

He became a good partner and umped a number
of games with his former
rival as a player and manager, Elmer Schleper.
Being an umpire is a
different role in the game
than being a player or
manager. He agrees with
the person who said, The
game is different when
you put the mask on.
But even as an umpire, he still showed an
interest in helping people.
There are times, after the

game is over, when he

compliments the players
or offers suggestions to
the young players on how
to improve their game.
He doesnt know how
long he will continue to
officiate, but is happy he
has been able to do so.
I am not ailing too
much yet, he said. I can
still get up and down the
field to make the calls.
As long as he feels he
can do that, he will be at
games, helping others enjoy a game he loves.

Good luck to all area teams!

o
Not that it has always
ebeen easy. He faced tough
pitchers in the Victory
oLeague, and has found that
nStearns County League
ecan be tough.
I dont want to sinegle out any one pitcher,
the said. Brad Mergen
(Farming) is tough and
Matt Imdieke (Meire

us. Ty Reller of New Munich is big and tall and his
ball moves well. Theres
plenty of good pitching,
thats for sure.

Holthaus has been

able to hit most of them.
Sunday afternoons you
can usually find him at a
ball diamond, either with
St. Martin or watching
Avon.
When we dont have
game on Sunday. I try to
catch them. I still follow
them he said.
Making the adjustment to the SCL wasnt
all that difficult. He noted
both the Victory and Stearns County League have
their own feeling, but that
when it comes down to it,
they are playing baseball.

Its baseball, he
said. You play it between
the lines. It is pretty much
the same. See ball, hit ball.
Hit, catch, throw and run
the bases.
Holthaus played impressively enough that he
was selected to play for
the SCL All-Star team and
represented St. Martin in
the home run contest. The
all-star game became a
highlight game for him.
I came in for the second half of the game, he
said. It was fun. There
were a lot of people there
and the grandstand was

packed.
With the season winding down and the post-season coming up, Holthaus
is hoping to be playing
with St. Martin for a number of weeks. The team is
in a good position to make
the playoffs, and with
Holthaus, could go much
farther.
We are just putting
barrel on ball, keep errors to minimum and play
whole-heartedly, he said
of his teams efforts.

Team Strengths
When Derek Thielen pitches the team can be
tough to score on.
Challenges
The team needs to be
more consistent defensively and offensively. It often
allowed too many extra
base runners and runs. It
has some good hitters in the
line-up, but needs get hits
with runners on.

ST. STEPHEN STEVES

Victory League-South
Regular Season Record 8-5

Quick View:
Top Hitters
Matt
Meyer:
Well-rounded hitter who
has shown great consistency since joining the team
halfway through the season.
Matt has been able to get on
base consistently and has
been able to steal some bases. He also has shown great
pop in his bat with some
extra base hits and the current team leader in batting
average.
Ben Omann: Two-hole
hitter for the Steves. Mainly used as a designated hitter for the Steves and is the
team leader in hits and extra
base hits.
Austin Guggenberger:
Leadoff hitter for the Steves
and has been consistent all
season at getting on base
for the top of the line-up.
Austin and Ben either share
the lead or are tied in the
following categories: hits,
runs scored, extra base hits,
RBIs and walks.
Top Pitchers
Nick Krippner: Nick

has been the Steves top

pitcher for the previous few
years and has been consistent for the team all season. Nick, along with Andy
Stolt, has shouldered a large
part of the pitching load this
year. Nick is averaging over
one strikeout per inning this
year and relies on his command and breaking pitches.
Andy Stolt: Andy has
also shouldered a large portion of the pitching load this
season. Andy has success
by locating his fastball and
keeping batters off balance with off-speed. Andy
throws strikes and does not
walk many hitters.
Isaac Dammen: Isaac
is a first year player that
has shown great potential
for the Steves. Isaac has not
seen the amount of innings
as Andy and Nick, but he
has shown the ability to be
a reliever and starter for the
team. Isaac and Nick are
both left-handed pitchers.
Top Defenders
Austin
Guggenberger-shortstop and Blake Gug-

genberger-third-base /second-base: Both have consistently played solid defense

all year and have shown
great athleticism.
Bo Schmitz/Matt Meyer-catcher: Bo and Matt
have caught a majority of
the innings this year for the
team. Both have proved to
be extremely reliable behind the plate.
Team Strengths
The Steves have shown
great moments of hitting,
defense and pitching all
year, but as mentioned in the
challenges this team faces,
they have not put all of the
aspects together at the same
time. They have shown the
ability to score a lot of runs,
play great defense and shut
down opponents hitting, but
they will need to put all of
that together for the playoff push. They have also
played in many close games
and extra-inning games that
could be an advantage as the
season progresses.
Areas To Improve On
The top, middle and
bottom of the batting order
has shown the ability to have
great hitting performances,
but they have not done it all
in same game. Two-out hit-

Quick View:
Top Hitters
John Pogatchnik: John
always takes a good at bat,
rarely strikes out and does
the little things right.
Lee Maciej: Has been
solid at the three spot all
year, candrive the ball and
hit the gaps for extra bases
Keaton Gustin: Has
done a nice job batting
clean-up, leads the team in
home runs. He is always a
threat at the plate.
Top Pitchers
John Pogatchnik: Is always around the zone, rarely walks anyone.
Max Posch: Does a

Sam Butler: Hasthe

Top Defenders
John Pogatchnik: Has

He makes plays that others
wouldnt and is aleader on

Jake
Braegelmann:
Has done a nice job for us

Max Posch: Max has

a nice job filling in at catcherwhen needed this year.
Team Strengths
The biggeststrength is
that guys have done a nice
job in putting in the extra
time to help better the team.
Guys are making it to practice and getting better and
we are playing as a team this
year and it has helped in us
having animproved season.
Areas To Improve On
There have been a few
times the team had runners
on thirdwith one out and
came up empty. The team
also a few baserunning errors that have cost it a few
runs that could be key in a
close game.
Challenges
Biggest challenge is
getting over the hump and
getting to regions. The team
has been close a couple of
times in the past, but came
up short. This year it has
improved and had a chance
to fight it out with two other
teams to get the last region
spot in its division.
Best Game from Manager
The best game we have

played this year was at home

against St. Stephen. We had
lost a tight game against
them earlier in the year and
had lost a tough game the
day prior to Avon so this
was a game that we needed
to win to get back on track.

AITKIN STEAM
Victory League-North
Regular Season Record 5-8

Quick View:
Top Hitters
Brian Burman: One
of the top hitters in the Region. Extra base hit in all but
two games. Very tough out.
Doesnt give away at bats.
Nathan
Ehnstrom:
Line drive hitter who rarely swings and misses. Just
three strikeouts in 52 at bats
Sam Peterson: Heading
into his senior year of high
school and already has a
polished swing. Has power
to all fields. Two of his three
doubles missed being home
runs by just a couple feet.
Top Pitchers
Nathan Ehnstrom: An
innings machine. Gives consistent quality outings and
one of the few pitchers in the
league that at times has been
able to hold down the Nisswa lineup to under four runs.
Threw a beautiful three hit,
one complete game in Freeport this year.
Jeremy Janzen: A veteran lefty with nasty stuff. Opponents hit just .167 off of
him and he struck out 22 in
18 innings pitched. Can still
top 83 on the radar gun at 38
years old.
Jake Lynn: Opponents
hit .278 off of him in 26.2
innings. He had 27 strikeouts.
Top Defenders
Brian Burman: Great
catcher who allowed just
one steal with a throw down
all year.
Nathan
Ehnstrom:
Extremely versatile and
plays all nine positions.
Knows the game better than
anyone.
Dylan Quade: Hasgreat
speed and covers a lot of
ground in centerfield. Made
numerous over the shoulder
running catches and has a
strong enough arm to keep
runners in check.
Team Strengths
Depth at catching
position with solid defense
and a pitching staff that
when healthy can compete
with anyone.

said. I have a great physical therapist. She is very

knowledgeable and has
me on a great recovery
plan to try to get as much
motion back as possible.
Over the months, he
was able to improve the
movement in his arms and
the strength returned. But
it wasnt until the May 7
game, third week of the
season, that Jendro got
back onto the field. He
played the entire game at

second base and finished

2-for-4 at the plate.
I wasnt in the greatest shape, since I wasnt
able to do much for
months leading up to the
season, he said. I felt
slow, but I played second
base that game, got a couple hits. So it was a successful first game back.
He became a fixture
in the Skis line-up and infield, but fans, teammates
and Jendro wondered if

he would ever be back

on the mound again. He
wanted to go back up, but
until June 29, he helped
the team win nine consecutive games in the Victory League with his hitting
and playing defense.
His outing in the
Buckman game was short,
only one and one-third innings. Buckman was able
to hit him and ended up
winning the game.
Pitching is the goal
at some point this year,
he said before the Buckman game. I hope to help
the team on the mound at
some point this summer.
He earned a save
throwing three innings
and helping preserve a
shutout in the Skis 10-0
win over Flensburg on
July 3. When the regular
season ended, he also had
pitched a win.
Sobieski is playing
again in the Region 8C
tournament and perhaps
beyond that. Jendro will
be with the team. Still no
matter how the season
turns out, he is coming to
games with a slightly different understanding of
just what he is doing.
Since the accident
and not knowing if or when
Id play again, it makes
you appreciate playing the
game even more, he said.
Im lucky I still get to go
out on weekends and play
with a great bunch of very
talented teammates.

Regular Season Record 9-4

Quick View:
Top Hitters
Colin Modahl: Lead off
hitter who doesnt strikeout
often, always putting the
ball play. Excellent hit and
run hitter.
Connor Kerr: Second
batter who can shoot the
gaps well and also good at
the hit and run game.
Joe Snaza: Typical
number three batter. Highest
average on the team, RBIs
and homeruns. Power to all
fields.
Top Pitchers
Casey Kowalski: Gamer who shuts teams down.
Great curveball that keeps
teams off balance.

Colin Modahl: Lots

of strikes, free passes just
dont happen. Games fly by
when hes on the mound.
Nick Petro: Gets guys
out. Works different speeds
and angles. Good pop.
Kyle Bettin and Joe
Snaza: Are closers who both
throw hard and anchor the
end of games.
Hunter Arnold: Good
young arm who when confident can pitch against anyone.
Top Defenders
Catcher: Casey Johnson
is a human wall and throws
out a high percentage of
would be base stealers. He
makes the staff confident

in bouncing a breaking ball

with two strikes.
Colin Modahl is solid
at short. Low errors and
makes all the plays.
Connor Kerr patrols
center field, gets great reads
and catches everything. He
has taken many hits away
from teams over the years.
Team Strengths
Veteran squad that
knows how to win. Lots of
quality arms. Might not be
able to go all nine innings
anymore, but all are old
former starters who have
all won a ton of games over
their careers. All have good
pop left.
They have some youth

Alexandria Black Sox

that brings some speed to

the team bench. Normally
pretty solid defense with
an occasional dud game in
there. Good depth through
the batting order. Back end
holds there own quite well.
Areas To Improve On
Eliminate
the
occasional dud game and a
couple errors.
Challenges
Getting everyone there.
Best Game from Manager
Millerville at home
sticks out. We hit a pair of
home runs and won 8-2.
Solid defense all night.
Also had a nice three game
stretch where we out scored
our opponents 24-1.
