THE LABOUR peer charged with investigating claims of anti-Semitism
at the Oxford University Labour
Club has finally made public her
full report but acknowledged
that many would find the document a great disappointment.
Baroness Jan Royall was brought
in by the party after the Clubs co-chair
resigned claiming many members
had some kind of problem
with Jews, but until
now the party had only
published the executive
summary of her report.
The peer, who has
been praised by commu-
nity leaders for her efforts, was again

left frustrated last month after no mention of the Oxford probe was included
in Shami Chakrabartis wider report on
anti-Semitism.
In Royalls report, revealed yesterday,
she wrote: It is clear to me from
the weight of witnessed allegations
received that there have been some
incidents of anti-Semitic behaviour and
that it is appropriate for the disciplinary
procedures of our party to be invoked.
However, it is not clear to me to
what extent this behaviour constituted
intentional or deliberate acts of antiSemitism. This is particularly true of historic hearsay evidence. No individuals
are named.
Baroness Royall suggested an educational rather than punitive approach
to past incidents where possible, saying: I see no value in pursuing disciplinary cases against students who may
be better advised as to their conduct.
It comes after Alex Chalmers, the
Clubs co-chair, resigned in February,
accusing members of casually using
the derogatory term Zio and of
accusing some students of crying
wolf, on the day the Club voted to
endorse Israel Apartheid Week.
Royall reiterated there was no evidence that the Club is itself institutionally anti-Semitic but acknowledged a

cultural problem in which behaviour and language that would

now tolerated.
She denounced a lack of systematic reporting and the fears
of victims in coming forward,
noting that "some Jewish members do not feel comfortable attending the [OULC] meetings,

IT HAS felt like anti-Semitism

has been in the news a
lot this year. Whether it is
the Labour Partys problems,
social media trolls or a general
rise in racist attacks, the subject
has been front page news on a
regular basis.
This may be the reason why
the
Community
Security
Trust recorded an 11 percent
increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the first six months of
2016, compared to the same
period last year from 500 to
557 incidents. The total for the
first half of 2016 was the second highest for the January to
June period of any year.
Normally when anti-Semitic
incidents rise it is because of
a specific trigger event a war
in Israel, for example or
because of a surge in reporting
from the community. This year,
though, there is no obvious

single explanation but there
are some possible causes we
can point to.
Most of the increase came in
April, May and June, when antiSemitism was in the news a lot
and it felt like there was a rise
in xenophobia and racism
across the board.
Neo-Nazis and anti-social
trolls increasingly use social
media to harass, abuse and
threaten public figures, and
when those public figures are
Jewish, the abuse is usually
anti-Semitic. And while the bitter divisions in the Labour Party
are about much more than antiSemitism and Israel, those subjects do play their part.
All this means that, whereas
a few years ago CST recorded
around 40 to 50 incidents per
month, now it is more like 70
to 80. The problem is getting
worse, and we need police,
prosecutors, government and
social media companies to
work together to reverse this
worrying trend.

RISE IN ANTI-SEMITIC INCIDENTS

THE NUMBER of anti-Semitic incidents targeting British Jews rose by 11 percent in the
first six months of the year, new figures have
revealed.
A report by the Community Security Trust
also suggested that
the average monthly
number of recorded
incidents are now twice
as high as five years ago,
with no let-up since the
Gaza war in 2014.
The report of incidents logged in the first
half of 2016, published
this week, says longterm trends are at a
sustained higher level
since the summer of
2014, when there was a
sharp spike in response
to the conflict in Gaza.
The reports authors
say average monthly totals are now almost
double what they were in 201113 with
a quarter of incidents recorded as online
abuse.
Social media has become an essential tool
for coordinated campaigns of anti-Semitic
harassment, abuse and threats directed at
Jewish politicians, student activists and other
individuals, they say, noting that offenders
often use content generated on neo-Nazi
websites.
The CST recorded 557 incidents between
January to June compared to 500 during the
same period last year the second highest
ever for that period.
There was a fall in violent assaults by 13 percent with none classified as involving extreme
violence. There were also 32 incidents of damage to property and 431 of abusive behaviour,
including verbal and graffiti.

The monitoring organisation

recorded 133 anti-Semitic incidents
that involved social media in the first
six months of 2016, which comprised
24 percent of the overall total.
Compared to the same period last year,
when there were 89 reported anti-Semitic
comments made online, the 133 total represents a 50 percent increase in abuse levelled
at Jews over the internet.
CST bosses say some online anti-Semitic
comments are made abroad, whereas others
originate from unknown locations in the UK,
but every incident is tracked to the location of
the victim.
Given that many prominent Jewish individuals and organisations are based in London,
this can have a disproportionate effect on the
London figures, said a CST spokesman,
noting that London incidents increased by 62
percent on the same six-month period last
year.
This rise in reported anti-Semitism comes
at a time when division, intolerance and prejudice appear to be deepening within our soci-

Reversing this worrying trend requires real
leadership from all political parties, and for the
social media companies to take their share of
the responsibility.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the figures were deplorable, while Communities
Secretary Sajid Javid added: We want to create an environment that prevents hate crime
from happening in the first place. Rudd reiterated the 13.4 million in Home Office funding for community security.
Labours Shadow Home Secretary Andy
Burnham said: Labour will always lead the way
in tackling any form of hatred or prejudice but
we are being hampered in that fight by a small
number who are not welcome in our party.
The report said there was no obvious
single cause for the rise. The most antiSemitic incidents in the six-month period were
recorded from April to June, when anti-Semitism among Labour Party members was headline news, and when race-hate crime increased
across Britain, in part due to the vote to leave
the European Union.

JLC chief earns 170k

THE CHIEF executive of the Jewish Leadership
Council earns at least 170,000, and perhaps
as much as 179,999, annual accounts have
revealed.
Ex-lawyer Simon Johnsons salary, shown as
a range, makes up almost half the salaries of
the three most senior figures in the organisation. The total salary bill is just over 1m.
The JLC said it has a policy to pay appropriate salaries consistent with the market in
order to attract and retain the best talent.
The strategic umbrella body this year welcomed a new external affairs team of three,
headed by director Bernard Hughes. The team
has said it will build a new cadre of activists
and work to counter the challenges that the
community faces from BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), de-legitimisation, antiSemitism and security.
JLC has worked with communal groups to
set up Local Government Friends of Israel,
sending three delegations of councillors there.

Munich memorial offers closure

ELEVEN ISRAELI athletes and
coaches murdered at the 1972
Olympics were honoured in
Rio yesterday in the most significanttribute yet by the International Olympic Committee
at a Summer Games.
IOC chief Thomas Bach led
a minutes silence at the ceremony in the Olympic Village,
attended by families of the
victims, current sports stars
and representatives of delegations
including Palestine and Iraq.
Ankie Spitzer whose fencer
husband Andre was among those
murdered by Palestinian terrorists
told Jewish News it was an historic event. She said: Everyone
stood for a minutes silence inside
the Village. It was everything we
wanted. It felt like closure. It was
very emotional.
She has spent decades campaigning for a minutes silence for
the athletes at the Olympic opening ceremony. A petition ahead of
the London Olympics gained tens
of thousands of supporters. A
minutes silence was held for
Munich victims during the signing
of the Olympic Truce four years
ago, but the families said they did
not receive invites.
The event came three months
after Jewish News revealed details
of the commemoration for the
darkest moment in the history of
the Games, following a meeting
between two of the widows and

told the gathering: We
commemorate them because this was an attack not
only on our fellow
Olympians, but also an
assault on the values the Olympic
Village stands for. It was an attack
onthe universal power of sport to
unite all of humanity in peace and
solidarity.
The Olympic Games are always
an affirmation of life, so let our
commemoration today also be an
affirmation of their lives. Through
this act of remembrance, the spirit
of those who have departed
continues to live on.
The event also remembered
other athletes and officials who
have died at Olympic Games over
the years.
It marked the inauguration of a

mourning area set up in the Village
for the duration of the Games for
individuals and national delegations to remember those who have
been lost the centerpiece of
which is a stone brought from
Olympia placed on top of a
memorial slab.
A moment of reflection will be
held during the closing ceremony
in Rio to enable participants and
viewers to remember loved ones
and the Munich families have
urged the IOC to explicitly mention
the names of the 1972 victims.

Baroness Royall said of the report: It will, I have
no doubt, be a great disappointment to the
Jewish community for which I have a very high
regard. She felt some would be feel that way
because many people have demanded greater
action.
Labour Students initially conducted its own
investigation into Oxford. It is now hoped that will
also be published. But Royall said of her report:
As it was adopted by the [Labour] National Executive Committee, we should be able to ensure that
each and every one of the recommendations is implemented and, in doing so, we should be able to
bring about the necessary change in culture.
A Union of Jewish Students spokeswoman said:
Many Jewish students at Oxford are likely to be
disappointed. The report does not reveal much
that wasnt already thought to be the case.
Chalmers said: The OULC has a serious cultural
problem that makes Jewish students feel unwelcome and I hope the club makes a substantial
effort to improve its atmosphere.
Labour Friends of Israel director Jennifer Gerber
said: Now the allegations of anti-Semitism have
been proven to have taken place, its absolutely
vital the party takes swift action to ensure those responsible face the appropriate disciplinary action.
Jewish Labour Movement member Aaron
Simons said: Jewish students subjected to antiSemitism at Oxford are owed justice by the party.
This represents a real test of the principles the
Chakrabarti report called for.
Although there was no explicit mention of the
Club in Chakrabartis report, Jon Trickett, shadow
business secretary, said that much of [Royalls]
work was integrated into [it and it] has been fully
accepted by the Labour Party. Its now time for the
Party to deliver on the recommendations of both
Baroness Royall and Shami Chakrabarti.

THE FORGOTTEN
Loneliness is a problem everywhere, but it has a particular
resonance among the Jewish communitys older generation.
Stephen Oryszczuk speaks to the volunteers seeking to help
s a stressed-out working mother, Lisa

Wimborne was beginning to wonder
why she was bothering. Two months
earlier, shed seen a shul advert asking
for someone to visit an elderly housebound
lady who desperately needed company.
Every week shed call, and every week the
lady would ask again who Lisa was, then say
she didnt feel up to it.
Finally, perseverance paid off. One day
I called and she told me it was her 90th birthday. I asked if she was doing anything special.
She said: Well I am now, love, because youre
coming to see me. Their bond formed
instantly. Id use my me time to visit, an
hour a week. We laughed like old friends. She
once said Id come along at just the right
time and changed her world. All I did was
respond to an advert. But there are loads
more out there like her.
There are almost 20,000 Jews aged 75+ in
London and, based on an Institute for Jewish
Policy Research (JPR) analysis of the 2011
census, a small majority live alone. It is the
same across the UK (3.9 million rely on the TV
for company), so the issue is not unique to
the Jewish community, but demographics
mean there is a particular risk on the communitys doorstep one which is often overlooked.
Theres a sense of urgency, of silent crisis, says Senior Reform Rabbi Laura JannerKlausner. This is an increasingly pressing
issue, and we need gentle, targeted chesed
(acts of love).
There is both emotional loneliness and
physical isolation, she says, but the problem
can stem from embarrassment, of not wanting to be a burden. It can be humiliating.
Carol Hart, who works with Holocaust survivors at The Association of Jewish Refugees
(AJR), has seen this up close. Its a big step
to accept help. For the whole of your life
youre a giver, now youre a taker. We underestimate how hard that is.
For her clients, who have survived so much,
it is especially difficult. They can be suspicious. Why are you in their house? What do
you want? They can be anxious. They came
here, created a life, set up a business, brought
up a family, now there are these people who
just want to talk to them? Its tough.
It is not just survivors and refugees who
struggle. Dame Esther Rantzen (right), who
set up the charity The Silver Line, says: This
is a generation with a lot of pride, who are
used to being needed. But she adds: There
is profound loneliness among some of our
elderly population. Well get our millionth call
this summer. Its a measure of how great the
need is. Loneliness can be so dangerous.
Former pensions minister Baroness Ros
Altman, who managed Saga from 2010-13,
says there is a particular issue with women.
Statistically, women are less likely to drive
and more likely to be bereaved, she says.
Also, when an older man loses his wife, he
can more easily find a new partner, either as
a wife or friend, if he chooses.
You see it in social groups far more

women than men, so women are more likely
to stay on their own. They are also less likely
to ask for help than men, in my experience.
The JPRs Dr David Graham agrees that
women make up a disproportionately large
part of the senior Jewish one-person household sector but also notes that from 200111 the number of senior Jewish one-person
households actually declined by 15 percent,
compared with a rise of two percent in the
general population.
Despite the figures, anecdotal evidence
suggests that there are still too many Jews
in and around London who do not see anyone for weeks on end. Businessman Elia
Meghnagi from Edgware recalls recently
delivering kosher food to an elderly couple.
I was almost reduced to tears when they
said the only time they saw anyone was on
their visits to hospital, he says. How could
this happen? How many more isolated people are slipping under the radar?
Nicole Duke, a synagogue volunteer,
arranges fortnightly coffee mornings for
elderly shul members at Edgware United,
where a staggering 476 congregants are
aged 75-plus. Loneliness can be a killer,
she says. We visit, help with shopping, take
them out. Its free, just a favour. We phone
on their birthdays, which can be the only call
they get that day.
When she started the coffee mornings,
Duke says they offered to play music and
games. They just wanted to talk, to break
the monotony. People enjoy company and
being together. Last week, a couple I took
told me the last time they spoke to anyone
else was two weeks earlier, when we
picked them up for the
last coffee morning.
Its a problem. In the
United Synagogue, we
can be too focused on
family and kids. We can
forget the elderly.
Identifying loneliness
can be the biggest difficulty. Louise Cook,
welfare coordinator at
Muswell Hill Synagogue, says the death
of a loved one can act
as an alert, as can her
shuls Pesach and Rosh
Hashanah telethons,
when the team calls all
members aged 80plus. They may say
yes to a Friday night
invite, when for years
they just didnt do it,
she says.
Simon Morris, chief
executive of Jewish
Care, says: The challenge of tackling loneliness is that those who
are lonely often shut themselves off from
others. We need to work together to draw
people in and then reach out to them and
support them in a way that works for them.
But there is a risk of treating a problem
that does not exist. Some people thought to
be lonely in fact arent. Many of Harts AJR
clients came to the UK on their own, sometimes the only member of their family to survive, and often live alone, without large
extended families and away from other
Jews. Some perceived as lonely are actually
very comfortable and content with their life.
For others, no amount of support would be
enough. They could be doing things all day
then, by 7pm, they say theyre lonely.
Still others say theyre alone when
theyre not. At one ladys funeral not long
ago, there were 80 mourners who all
thought they were the only person this
woman ever saw!
Where loneliness does exist, it is crucial to
step in. Experts say it can be as dangerous

to your health as smoking, and researchers
in the US have shown how depression
caused by loneliness increases risks of
dementia. Cook says: You can be physically
fine but, if youre lonely, that brings a whole
host of other problems. Just arranging a
game of cards can be a lifesaver.
When Rantzen speaks to people about
why they feel cut off, the word she keeps
hearing is busy their son is busy, their
daughter is busy, their neighbours are busy.
People can pick up the phone and have a
laugh, which can make a huge difference,
but they dont, she says. We think of ourselves as a very caring community, but the
older generation can be forgotten.
Altman says the Jewish community is better placed than most to deal with loneliness,
because faith-based communities can give
a family-knit network. If you think of all
the Jewish festivals, where families get
together, were lucky in that sense. But Janner-Klausner warns that there is a view that
all Jews are well-off, with large supportive
families, but its not always true.
Indeed, there are national trends away
from the close-knit family, with many increasingly fragmented. Two generations ago, you
did what your parents did, where they did it,
so families stayed together, says Altman.
Now theyre far more likely to move away.
And whereas this generation is used to staying in touch by text, email or social media,
their grandparents are used to meeting faceto-face. It can be a huge challenge.
While the problem is thought to be less
common in the strictly Orthodox community,
Charedi leaders say that where it does
occur it can be more
pronounced. Loneliness
could be more severe for
a Charedi person used to
a very fulfilled social life,
with far more daily interactions than a nonCharedi person, says
Joel Friedman, who is
head of policy at Interlink.
We work with a charity
called Reach-Out, which is
a support/learning group
for older Charedi men.
There are similar groups
for women. For some who
attend, it is a lifesaver.
They wouldnt step out of
the house otherwise.
Elsewhere, shuls and
organisations such as
Jewish Care have initiatives including kosher food
delivery and befriending
services, with one-to-one
home visits, and social outings or activities through
the likes of U3A (University of the Third Age).
Organisations like the AJR also have volunteers who go out to help the elderly by
showing them how to use computers, or
specialists working with dementia.
Help is available, if people let themselves
be helped, says Hart, noting the good work
of the Jewish Volunteering Network (JVN)
and GIFT, but there will be people who slip
through the net.
Lisa Wimborne, a spokeswoman for Jewish Care, is clear that it remains a priority.
Next to dementia, loneliness and social isolation is our most pressing challenge, she
says. We could have thousands in our community who are in this situation. We are a
caring community, which means we can pull
together to change this.

HEZBOLLAH VICTIMS BACK FLAG CAMPAIGN

MORE THAN 1,500 people have thrown their
weight behind a Jewish News campaign calling
on Theresa May to outlaw displays of support
for Hezbollah, as those whose lives have been
destroyed at the hands of the terror group backed
the initiative.
The Zionist Federation and Jewish News
launched a petition urging the new prime minister
and home secretary to make it clear that any
repeat of scenes at the Al Quds Day rally three
weeks ago, when flags were openly waved on the
streets of London, will not be tolerated.
This is simply unacceptable, the change.org
petition that was launched three weeks ago, reads.
Hezbollah are an internationally recognised
terrorist organisation. They are unashamedly antiSemitic, reject Israels right to exist, and are linked
to numerous war crimes and acts of violence
against civilians.
The campaign has been backed by the IDF
Widows and Orphans Organisation, hundreds of
whose members lost loved ones at the hands
of Hezbollah.
Sharon Yahav, who was left to bring up two
children after her husband Captain Nati Yahav and
eight of his soldiers were directly hit by Hezbollah
mortar fire during the second Lebanon War, said:
Europe needs to wake up before its too late. The
struggle faced in Israel is the same global struggle
against Islamist terrorism.
I am all for freedom of expression; however,
expressing support for an international terror organisation should be unacceptable and illegal
everywhere. This must be stopped; we cant allow
these people to march freely with impunity.

I cannot understand how the flag of a group which
murders innocent civilians is allowed to fly in
London. The sight takes me back to that time. Its
frightening.
The Community Security Trust also this week
reiterated its long-standing calls for the flag to be
outlawed. The Berlin Senator of the Interior banned
them from the Al Quds rally in Germany in June.
The CST said: Hezbollah poses a threat to Jews
and Israeli citizens everywhere and has repeatedly
targeted civilians throughout the world. That is why,
when someone flies the flag in London or in any
city, as CST has long argued, it is

incitement against Jews and should
contravene anti-terror legislation.
It pointed to a catalogue of
attacks blamed on Hezbollah,
including the truck bomb attack
that killed 85 people in Argentina
and the bombing of a bus of Israeli
tourists in Bulgaria, which killed six.
Pablo Ciappina, who was in Buenos Aires the
day of the attack, said seeing flags openly
displayed in London made him sick to my
stomach.
He said: I remember that day. Everyone kept
quiet in the area where the bombing occurred

so that the emergency services could hear the
screams of the people who were still alive and
buried under the rubble.
When home secretary, May suggested that flying
the flag could fall under Section 13 of the Terrorism
Act 2000 and arrests were made during the visit of
Benjamin Netanyahu last year. However Jewish
News revealed ahead of this years Al Quds event
that no charges were forthcoming.
The confusion appears to centre on the fact that
the armed wing of Hezbollah is listed as a terrorist
group while the political wing is not, yet the two
elements share the same flag. The home office has said the context and
manner in which the flag is
displayed must demonstrate
that it is specifically in support
of the proscribed elements of
the group.
The home offices hate crime
action plan, published last week,
included a pledge to work with the
police to create a database of
symbols, slogans and flags that
may be illegal because the organisations that use them are proscribed
or incite hatred.
It added: This is one of the recommendations made by the All-Party
Parliamentary Group against Antisemitism following its inquiry (February 2015) into
the impact of the Gaza conflict on UK Jewish
communities.

Our father was wholly innocent

A DAUGHTER OF the late
Lord Janner has predicted
that the tide is turning in
the public response to allegations of sexual abuse against
the former Labour politician.
Lord Janner died last
year, aged 87, suffering from
dementia. He was due to
have faced a so-called trial
of the facts over allegations
of historical sexual offences.
Instead, an inquiry led by
New Zealand judge Lowell
Goddard is considering allegations made against the
peer, the only individual to be
considered, together with 12
institutions.
Over the weekend, a number of articles appeared
which underscored the belief
of the Janner family that their
father was wholly innocent
of the allegations made
against him.
Marion Janner told Jewish
News: Just look at the last
few days [my brother]
Daniels interview in The Sunday Times, the piece in
The Mail on Sunday showing
that the prime complainant
against Dad had already
made baseless claims [in
another case], and a piece
in The Times on Tuesday regarding anonymity for those
accused of sexual abuse.

dating back to 1963 said:
The fact that so many highprofile people have been
falsely accused and have now
been found to be innocent
Sir Cliff Richard, Edward

swing the other way.
Such cases had done so
much damage to genuine
victims of sexual abuse, she
said. Sexual abuse of children is such a heinous crime
that of course all allegations
have to be taken seriously.
Where things have gone

wrong is this insane and
profoundly unjust situation
where all allegations are
automatically believed to be
credible and true.
The Janner family had
already gone through a
much milder version of this
in 1991, in the trial of the
appalling paedophile Frank
Beck.
Dad responded with
enormous courage and dignity as well as with plenty
of private outrage, added
Marion. I like to think that
the courage he displayed has
slightly infused us and has
helped us to cope in the last

few years.
Marion, who was awarded
an OBE for her pioneering
mental health work, said that
when the allegations over her
father emerged, she had
been still recovering from a
punishing decade of mental
illness.
She explained that, in the
wake of the April 2015 decision of the Director of Public
Prosecutions not to prosecute her father and the
public row which followed
Lord Janner, by then suffering
severe dementia, moved with
his carers into her home.
He stayed with me until
he died, Marion said. Actually it was a specially wonderful time and having Dad there
really helped in my recovery.
She said she was profoundly grateful to the Community Security Trust for its
support particularly on the
horrific day [in August 2015]
when Dad, entirely unnecessarily, was dragged to court.
The Goddard inquiry last
week postponed its hearings
on Lord Janner until next
March, but warned that a
finding of fact could yet be
made a move that his family
said would be wholly unfair
as he is an individual rather
than an institution.
NUS is trying to sideline Union

of Jewish Students, says its VP
A VICE PRESIDENT of the National
Union of Students has said the
organisation is failing as a movement because many Jews feel unwelcome and accused the unions
ruling executive of trying to sideline
the representative body for Jewish
students.
The withering verdict by Rob
Young (pictured) comes in an article
for Jewish News in which he also
discusses research he has commissioned into the experience of Jewish
students within NUS and student
unions nationwide.
During meetings with Jewish
societies earlier this year, Young,
who serves as vice president for
society and citizenship, said he
found some students were angry
and upset that the movement that
was meant to represent them was
becoming an unwelcoming place
for their voices They felt that
some officers in NUS dont care as
much as they should about Jewish
students.
It comes amid ongoing concerns
over new NUS president Malia
Bouattia, who has previously
spoken of Zionist-led media,
and claims she has not done
enough to address her past
statements and the general
concerns of students about
campus.
His comments also
follow a public row
over a decision that
Jewish members of the National Executive Committee would choose a

Jewish representative on the unions
anti-racism anti-fascism group
seemingly ending the traditional
role played by UJS in the decision.
Despite UJS long playing a leading role in efforts to combat the farright, he said: It seems the NEC of
NUS wants to ensure we are not
working with UJS as closely as we
have in the past and this is something I stand totally against. I will
keep fighting to ensure that the
Union of Jewish Students is present
when we are working on the AntiRacism, Anti-Fascism campaign.
Young pointed out, however, that
the unions national conference, at
which Bouattia was elected, passed
motions to combat anti-Semitism
and commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. But saying he was voted
in to fight for relationship education
and votes at 16, he added: By making our spaces unwelcoming for
Jewish students, we are not only
failing to focus on these challenges, we are failing as a
movement that represents
all students.
He added: I want Jewish
students to be able to take
a leading part in my campaigns and in the work of
NUS, and not have to simply defend their right
to be there.

days. In the past, when the Israeli
economy was smaller and less
stable, the US dollar did used to be
a preferred currency for merchants.
Back then, many shops faced a
problem; the shekel was unstable
and difficult to exchange yet much
of the trade was from the US.
Accepting dollars was a way for
retailers to deal with this problem.
Nowadays, the Israeli economy is
stable, as is the shekel. As a result, all
merchants accept shekels.
The bottom line is that all you need in
Israel is shekels. And WeSwap can

Pokmon Go warning
ISRAELI SOLDIERS have been
banned from playing Pokmon
Go on military bases owing to
security concerns.
The military has told soldiers
and officers that the game activates mobile phone cameras
and location services and is concerned soldiers could download
a fake application that impersonates Pokmon Go and could
leak sensitive information
such
as
army base
locations
and photographs of the
bases.
Israels emergency rescue service Magen David
Adom has also issued a warning
about the game, saying Israelis
have suffered moderate injuries
while playing it.

Muslim petition misses Jewish victims

A LETTER BY French Muslims against
radical Islam has provoked anger after
failing to mention terror attacks against
Jews among a list of recent atrocities in
the country.
The letter, signed by dozens of
Muslim academics and celebrities, was
published in Sundays Journal de
Dimanche under the headline We,
French Muslims, are ready to assume
our responsibilities. They say their
initiative is part of a cultural battle
against radical Islam.
The signatories list the murder of an
85-year-old priest, the attack on Charlie
Hebdo magazines offices, the Bastille
Day horror in Nice, the bombing and
shooting attacks in November and the
murder of two police officers in June.
However, there is no mention of the
attacks by Islamist gunmen on Hyper
Cacher, a kosher supermarket in Porte
de Vincennes, which took the lives
of four Jewish hostages, or on a Jewish
primary school in Toulouse, which killed
a rabbi and three children.

of the Conference of European Rabbis
said the omission was obvious and
obscene, adding: Am I the only one
who will ask the signatories if attacks on

In a reference to the title of the petition, the head of the French Jewish rep-
resentative body, CRIF, said: Youre

ready to assume your responsibilities,
but you are off to a bad start.
Robert Ejnes, director of CRIF, wrote
on Facebook: You have a long way to
go, my friends: you need to understand
one day that these anti-Semitic attacks
were committed against Jews, who were
targeted for being Jewish. You cant
avoid these anti-Semitic murders.
Sisters vow to continue their fight for fathers Polish home

THREE BRITISH sisters this week
pledged to continue the fight of
their late father after a tribunal ruling
in Poland upheld a parliamentary decision to limit restitution claims.
Sharon Waters and sisters Anna
and Fiona are battling Polish authorities over their family properties in
Warsaw two apartment blocks estimated to be worth about 5 million.
Maurice Tabaksman, who died in

2013, campaigned for the return of
his familys property for half his life,
with help from Baroness Deech and
TV personality David Baddiel.
This week, following the tribunal
ruling, the sisters vowed to carry on,
saying: Its very disappointing. It is as
if his inheritance has been stolen
three times, first by the Nazis, then by
the Soviets, and now by the Poles.

But we will continue our fathers fight
for justice.
Warsaw-born Tabaksman went
abroad to study but could not return
because of the outbreak of war. His
parents and sister did not survive. He
later built a home and life in the UK.
Years later, Tabaksman was offered
a flat in the city, provided he lived in
it, but by that time he had a family in

London so did not take up the offer.
Its not about the money, though
that would be very nice, said Waters
this week. Its the injustice of it all,
and the insult to dead people. The
Nazis deprived me and my sisters of
grandparents and a wider family; now
the Poles are depriving us of our
rightful inheritance.

Pope embraces Auschwitz survivors

POPE FRANCIS embraced a
group of Auschwitz survivors and
honoured the more than one million victims during a sombre visit
to the notorious site last Friday.
The Argentinian pontiff followed in the footsteps of his two
immediate predecessors to make
the pilgrimage to the site, where
he also met 25 Christians who
risked their lives to save Jews
during the Shoah, and prayed
alongside Polands Chief Rabbi,
Michael Schudrich.
After walking slowly beneath
the gate bearing the words
Arbeit Macht Frei [work sets you
free], he met 12 survivors of the
death camp. He stopped, shook
their hands one by one, and bent
to kiss the elderly survivors on
both cheeks.
The meeting took place in front
of the death wall where thousands were shot and where the
Pope placed a large white candle
in remembrance.
He wrote in the visitors book:
Lord, have pity on your people.
Lord, forgive so much cruelty.
Rabbi David Rosen, International Director of Interreligious Affairs at the American Jewish
Committee, was invited by the
Vatican to join the delegation. He
said the way the Pope embraced
the survivors was unprecedented
for a papal visit.
What was also unique was
that the only public words heard
Pope Francis with former Auschwitz prisoners at the camp last week
were Psalm 130 and Kaddish, emphasising the Jewish significance

of the site, he told Jewish News.
The visit was an important reminder for the world of the
depths of inhumanity that are
possible and of how Jewish history uniquely testifies to this.
Stressing the importance in
Judaism of an event happening
three times, he said Auschwitz
should now be an accepted station on any papal itinerary.
Karen Pollock, chief executive
of the Holocaust Educational
Trust, said: This visit is a symbolic
reminder of our shared effort to
ensure that this period of our
history is never forgotten.

NEWLY-FOUND DIARY notes from Heinrich Himmler, the architect
of the Holocaust, are being serialised in a German magazine.
More than 1,000 pages have been unearthed at a research
institute in Russia covering 1938, 1943 and 1944, adding to Himmlers known diary details, which are housed in Tel Aviv. The notes
appear in the Bild magazine and show how he ordered dogs at
Auschwitz that could rip apart everyone but their handlers.
The German Historical Institutes Nikolaus Katzer said the documents provide insight into the changing role of Himmler and insight
into the SS elite and the entire German leadership.

IOC opportunity
MANY OF us will spend the next
weeks willing our sporting heroes
to run, jump, ride, serve and
shoot their way to Olympic gold.
It wont feel quite the same as
the halcyon days of 2012 itll
take far more than a journey down
the Northern Line to get to the
nearest action, and even if Boris
finds his way to Rio, hell no doubt
stay clear of any zip wire.
Nevertheless the likes of Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah will
have a much-needed chance to
briefly unite the country and boost
our national pride; we wish them
and the other athletes, including
Team Israel, a triumphant Games.
But the Rio Games will also be
remembered for something bigger than sport. For decades Ankie
Spitzer and other family members
of the 11 Israeli athletes murdered
at the 1972 Games have fought
for a minute's silence at the opening ceremony recognition of the
fact their loved ones were part of

Yesterday, 44 years after the
darkest moment in Olympic history, the IOC offered its most significant and high-profile tribute
yet with a ceremony addressed
by President Thomas Bach and
attended by family members,
journalists and current athletes.
It was welcomed by the families as
a major step forward.
But Bach can do more. By
ensuring the names of the Israeli
athletes and coaches are read out
at the closing ceremony, he has
the opportunity to right a wrong
that has blighted the Olympic
movement for too long. In front of
a TV audience of many millions,
he can promote the Olympic goal
of educating younger generations
by highlighting what happened in
the past in order to tackle hate.
Thats all the families have ever
wanted.

OBAMAS SUCCESS IS STUDY IN ISRAEL AND

THE WORST DEAL EVER ESCAPE THE HASSLE
While I usually enjoy reading articles written by
Alex Brummer, Im afraid I have to take him to
task over his latest piece entitled The impact
of Obama's Middle East negligence (Jewish
News, 21 July). I actually had to re-read the
sentence Obamas one major success is the
nuclear agreement with Iran.
In my opinion, which is shared by most of
the west who have Israels interests at heart,
this is the worst deal in the history of the US
and harks back to the days of Neville Chamberlain, waving his piece of paper around and
declaring peace in our time.
Iran has received $150 billion, has had most
of the sanctions that were imposed lifted and
continues to be the main instigator of terrorism against Israel and the rest of the world.
It has had to give hardly any concessions in
exchange for this deal and has, in fact,
become bolder in its rhetoric.
It is reported to have threatened to wipe
Israel off the map and even Iranian rockets
have this inscribed on them in Hebrew.
Irans centrifuges are spinning furiously in
their underground nuclear facilities towards
the countrys goal of obtaining a nuclear
bomb. I could go on and on.
Once this current US president has gone, let
us pray that Mr Trump can turn things around
and the free world will once again be able to
breathe a sigh of relief.

A senior member of the NUS says that campus

is now toxic for Jewish students, with many
feeling unsafe. This is a terrible state of affairs,
but how to stop it?
Is it time for the Union of Jewish Students
to boycott the NUS completely? Is it time for
the Board of Deputies to step up its efforts to
put a stop to this? There is another option
that Jewish students continue their studies in
Israel, where they will be welcomed with open
arms and have no hassle at all.

So the London Football Association has
banned a new Jewish football team from using
the amusing name Tottenham Chutzpah on
the grounds that the word chutzpah is offensive. The only offensive thing here is the LFAs
decision, which was apparently based on a
Google search, although Google is hardly an
authoritative information source.
I, too, have searched Google and I have
found no valid reason for labelling the word
offensive. And certainly there is nothing offensive about any of the definitions of chutzpah
in the two dozen reputable online dictionaries
accessible through OneLook.com.
The LFA should be asked to reverse its
decision before the new season begins.

Pope Francis is the third successive Pope to

visit the site, which is an important statement
of the ongoing commitment by the Catholic
Church to the memory of those that perished
in the Holocaust.
Pope Francis has shown enormous personal
support to Christian-Jewish relations over
many years, speaking out against anti-Semitism and engaging with the Jewish community
worldwide.
The Popes meeting and singling out of
Polish citizens who assisted Jews during
the Holocaust, the Righteous Among the
Nations, is also an important message to millions of people around the world, when the
suffering of religious and other minorities at
the hands of those who seek to make division
within societies is intensifying.
Pope Francis personal reflections and
prayers at the site remind us that the Holocaust raises profound questions for us all
about the nature of society and humanity and
that we must all speak out for one another, and
provide refuge and consolation, whenever and
wherever we can.
For these reasons, we must never ever forget those terrible events. Rabbi David Rosen

confirmed that the Popes visit in Auschwitz
was an enormous message of solidarity with
the victims and affirmation of the Popes
unequivocal reprehension of anti-Semitism

The Palestinian Authoritys plan [to sue over

the Balfour Declaration] is a full-blown rejection of peace, because it demonstrates that
the Palestinian leadership views the conflict as
being about the very creation and existence
of Israel, rather than its own actions or policies.
The announcement promotes conflict
and injustice. The Balfour Declaration was a
groundbreaking British government policy
statement that recognised the profound connection of the Jewish people to the land of
Israel. It was a landmark achievement for Zionism the liberation movement of the Jewish
people, who sought to overcome 1,900 years
of oppression across Europe and the Middle
East, and regain self-determination in their
indigenous land.

Jews supporting Trump?

Im at a loss for words...
THOSE WHO do not learn from the past are
condemned to repeat it. As Jews we are, or at
least, should be, very familiar with words such as
these. So what should we have learnt from the
following?
At times of difficulty, when economies are
struggling, when immigration is high, when radical ideologies are on the rise, someone brash,
loud and straight-talking comes along banging
his fist on the table and promising a much
brighter future if we follow his no nonsense plan
that involves scapegoating certain people
because, as far as hes concerned, they are part
of the problem.
Clearly, the lesson we should learn there is,
dont be fooled by the person making these
promises. They are dangerous, not to be trusted
and will only make things worse, much, much
worse.
So how anyone in their right mind can even
begin to contemplate supporting Donald Trump
is beyond my comprehension. But when it comes
to Jews supporting him, I am almost at a loss for
words.
And yet, just the other week, in this paper,
a Jewish politician did just that, solely, it would
seem, because of Trumps support for Israel and
Jewish causes.
This is so insular, blinkered and close-minded,
it makes my blood boil.
Lets not care that Trump is racist, misogynist,
rude and entirely inexperienced as a politician, he

supports us, so thats okay.
Well, heres another lesson from history: dangerous lunatics will say anything to get in to
power and then do the opposite, or to be more
precise, whatever they want, once they get in to
power.
So, just for the sake of argument, even if we
were prepared to forget all the racism, misogyny,
rudeness and inexperience, why on earth should
we believe what Trump says about Israel and Jewish causes? Sure, it might suit him to be supportive now, but as president of a country that has
very close ties to Saudi Arabia, I wouldnt be surprised if his enthusiasm waned a little when dealing with them.
But thats not really the point.
As Pastor Niemoller makes clear in his poem,
First They Came, we are all in this together.
Just because its not us Jews facing the wrath of
this lunatic, does not mean we should turn our
back on it.
Be under no illusion. Trumps racism towards
Muslims is evil, viciously evil, stupidly evil, ignorantly evil, and to support a man like that is
similarly evil.
As Jews, I really do not expect us to be any
different to other people. I dont think we should
necessarily be more moral and less discriminatory.
And yet, having been through the greatest crime
in humanity, if we cannot learn to be more like
that, then there really is no hope whatsoever.

But you know, trying to argue the toss about
Trump is pointless really. He has said and done so
much that would have destroyed other politicians, and come through unscathed, that sensibly
pointing out the reasons why voting for him
would be wrong is a waste of time.
His supporters dont care. They have been
whipped into a frenzy of devotion and, as far as
theyre concerned, their man is the great saviour
and can do no wrong where have I heard that
before?
So Im going to move away from logical argument and just ask you, beg you really, to use your
gut instinct.
I look at this man, Donald Trump, and I see a
despicable, horrible, vile person. And trust me,
I really do try to be compassionate, to find the
good in everyone.
At best, I would say he is misguided, someone
who thinks hes trying to better the world, but is
actually causing a lot of harm. But that really is
giving him the benefit of the doubt.
The bottom line is this. Can you honestly look
at him and genuinely think: Here is a good,
decent, honourable person, someone I would
trust as the leader of the most powerful country
in the world, and more pertinently, someone who,
as a Jew, I would be proud to support?
I dont think we know the answer, I know we
know it.

Muslim version of Limmud
SALAAM ALEIKUM, campers. Everyone
joked that the man running the information
centre at the Living Islam festival certainly
liked using his tannoy system. My interview
with British Muslim TV, complete with a backdrop across Lincolnshire Showground, was
interrupted by several announcements urging
participants to explore anything from the
bustling and eclectic bazaar to how not to
be ashamed of your body during sex.
The Islamic Society of Britain organises the
event, which is essentially the Muslim version
of Limmud. It aims to carve a path for an
Islam as British as the rapidly transitioning
weather that tested participants camping
skills to their limits.
The ultimate question of the weekend was
what should British Islam look like?
We were, according to the organisers, the
only non-Muslims to stay for the whole event.
We benefited hugely from being part of
it, and not just as guests. We were able to see
at first-hand differences and similarities
between our communities.
It also highlighted the challenges we both
face. In the open spirit of Living Islam, it may
be time for us to ask ourselves some difficult
questions if we want to thaw our relationship
with our Muslim cousins.
What would we like the Muslim community
in Britain to be like? Do we see Muslims
as partners, a minority with many similarities
to ourselves? Do the numbers 10 for every
one Jew leave us to be perpetually intimidated?
Is the elephant in the room the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict an insurmountable barrier to building profound relationships, or to

improving our views of one another?
The 3,000 delegates at Living Islam are
tackling equally challenging issues among
themselves.
I spoke on a panel discussing reform of
Islam. It was an honest and brave conversation to have, and I was surprised it happened
at all. The room was heaving. I realised we
would be discussing familiar struggles.
The chair of the panel, the wonderful
Naved Siddiqi, went straight for one of the
key issues we would be discussing. He told
the story of a religious family member,
a young adult, who recently came out as gay.
How do we reconcile these facts of life with
our faith and its teachings, asked the Muslim
members of the panel? How do we ensure we
are not just picking and choosing what suits
us?
There is another huge challenge that modern Muslims face, which I now appreciate.
I contributed to another panel are our
institutions failing us?
We focused on the view that Muslim institutions and individuals dont stand up effectively for their causes. I posed the question
why?
Two responses came back. The first is a
humbleness, an instinct that standing out
from the crowd is arrogant, something to be
frowned upon.
The second, that later became clear at a
talk featuring former chair of the Conservative Party, Sayeeda Warsi, was fear of entry-
ism, whereby Muslims are accused of holding sinister motives when they promote their
own causes.
Its a tough climate, one that made this particular event even more remarkable.
Inevitably, I was reminded of the task we
have in both communities to talk about the
Israel-Palestinian conflict. At Living Islam, I saw
many T-shirts supporting a free Palestine.
We were shown video charity appeals, calling for donations to help children rebuild
their lives. This is the other side of conflict
in the Middle East that we rarely see from our
standpoint in the Jewish community.
Living Islam gave me a precious insight
into the struggles taking place within parts of
the Muslim communities in this country.
One of those tensions Britishness and
Islam gave us some surreal moments, not
least the Royal Marines bands spectacular
festival-closing drum march.
This struggle also provided touching
moments, with tributes made to the late MP
Jo Cox, murdered outside her constituency
surgery last month, who was awarded a lifetime achievement award for her contribution
to interfaith understanding.
A mural was produced during the days of
the festival, inscribed with Jos mantra, that
we have far more in common than that
which divides us.
Being part of Living Islam demonstrated
that in no other context is this message more
accurate and more urgent than in relations
between Jewish and Muslim communities in
Britain.

How UK marks Balfour will

be test for Theresa May
FEW BRITISH leadership teams have been as
warmly disposed to the British Jewish community
as David Cameron and George Osborne. Cameron
was proud of his stockbroking Jewish roots and former Chancellor Osborne retained Jewish friendships that date back to his school days. It is early
days yet but the new Theresa May government has
yet to show its colours, nor has it been tested in the
white heat of Middle East conflict, as the Cameronled coalition government was during Operation
Protective Edge in Gaza, in the summer of 2014.
Under pressure from the Labour benches and
some elements of the LibDem partners in the coalition, Cameron stood firm against moves to impose
sanctions on Israel during what proved to be a prolonged and event-filled campaign in Gaza.
As Theresa May has already demonstrated, she
is very much her own person and is questioning
much of what went on under the Cameron-Osborne leadership.
The new PM has a record of support for Israel
and the Jewish community. But there are many unknowns, including the attitudes of the new leadership at the Foreign Office. There is little, probably,
to fear from Boris Johnson, who is a friend of Israel.
But as Labour MP Louise Ellman has pointed out,
at least one Foreign Office minister, Alan Duncan,
has been a long-term critic of the Jewish state.
An important test of the May leadership and the
Johnson FO will be the attitudes towards the Bal-
four Declaration centenary on 2 November 2017.

As the Jewish News reported in January this year,
after the annual Downing Street round table with
Jewish leaders, Cameron was anxious that the government and the Jewish community celebrated the
event together. Similarly, the Israeli ambassador,
Mark Regev, is determined that Israels diplomatic
mission here will be closely involved in marking a
historic turning-point for Zionist ambitions for a
Jewish state in the Middle East.
At a recent editorial board meeting at the Daily
Mail, Regev left little doubt that Israel wanted to be
wholeheartedly involved and said that a possible
joint event between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Downing Street was on the cards.
No one should imagine that the commemoration
is going to be a painless exercise, as readers of this
paper will recognise. The website, the Balfour Project, has all the trimmings of a neutral website, but
one doesnt have to explore very far to find it noting
that while a homeland for the Jewish people has
been achieved, the promise to protect the life of
Palestinian people has not yet been achieved.
It then urges the people and elected representatives of the UK to take effective action to promote justice, security and peace for both peoples.
Nothing much wrong with that, except that the site
goes on to mention Britains contradictory promises to the region.
The elderly Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas,
who has already gone to ground when it comes to

renewing peace talks, is very ready to open old
wounds by threatening to sue the British government. After a century, the statute of limitations
makes a legal action impossible to have any success, but as we know, putting right perceived historical wrongs is a fashionable cause.
Nevertheless, British and Israeli Jews should not
forget that the Balfour Declaration made it clear
that Jewish arrivals in Palestine should do nothing
to prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing
non-Jewish communities in Palestine. As Palestine,
as it was in 1917, no longer exists, it is hard to reconstruct this promise. But Israel, despite some
pressure from the right, does do its best to keep
the facilities for all religions open and functioning.
After many years of sub-optimal performance
the Netanyahu government is showing better signs
of understanding the need to improve the education, civil rights, housing and economic progress of
the Israeli-Palestinian communities. This has been
an investment that has been neglected for too
long. One of the encouraging things is the adoption and scaling-up of the Abraham Fund initiative
to bring Hebrew teachers into Arab schools, and
Arab teaching and skills into Jewish schools.
Only through such initiatives, that fully recognise
the civil and economic needs and rights of Israeli
Arab citizens, can the pledges made by Arthur
Balfour be fully carried out.

While Jewish students feel

unwelcome, NUS is failing
THIS SUMMER, students unions ran disaffiliation campaigns against NUS (the National
Union of Students), and although we are celebrating that the majority stayed, what we
cannot do as a movement is forget why they
were triggered and what we have to do to ensure that we are addressing the concerns that
students raised. One of the biggest concerns
was anti-Semitism.
I recognise that some of these disaffiliation
campaigns were led by Jewish students and
it is vital that NUS works to listen to, and address those concerns. After NUS national
conference, I spent time doing just this. I met
Jewish societies across the country, to get
their perspective on how we can move forward as a movement and be more welcoming
to Jewish students.
What I found was that Jewish students
were angry and upset that the movement that
was meant to represent them was becoming
an unwelcoming space for their voices. They
wanted to feel that there are people in the
movement who want to fight for our spaces
to be welcoming for Jews. They felt that
some officers in NUS don't care as much as
they could about Jewish students, and want
to ensure that their voices are being heard.
But what I also found is that there have
been problems within NUS structures for
some time, and that recent elections in NUS
have only highlighted these issues. It is important that we listen to Jewish students
when they say something is anti-Semitic, not
question it. To understand and address Jewish students' concerns we must work with UJS
to educate, inform and take action.
This is why I have commissioned research
into experiences of Jewish students, not only
within NUS, but inside student unions too.
Particularly at a time of growing anti-Semitism, not only on the left but in society as a
whole, its our duty at NUS to speak to Jewish
students and try to find how we eradicate
this, not only from our unions but from society.
Within NUS there is a long and proud history of Jewish student and UJS involvement
in the student movement, working on combatting the far-right on campaigns, including
leading efforts to No-Platform groups such as
the National Front, and working with other
groups of students to fight all forms of racism
and fascism. However, it seems that the National Executive Council of NUS want to ensure that we are not working with UJS as
closely as we have in the past and this is
something I stand totally against. I will keep
fighting to ensure that UJS are present at the
table when we are working on the ARAF (antiracism/anti-fascism) campaign.
At this year's National Conference, we
passed a motion that committed to combating anti-Semitism and for NUS to officially
commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. Remembering all the people who were murdered and victimised under Nazi rule is
incredibly important. As living memory fades,
we must ensure that future generations remember these terrible scars on human history. They cannot be forgotten. There is no
rationale or excuse for fascism and my journey to Auschwitz with the Holocaust Educational Trust showed me the human tragedy it
leads to.
I was elected as NUS Vice President for
Society and Citizenship to fight for votes at
16, sex and relationship education, and
sustainability, all issues that NUS should
be campaigning on. By making our spaces
unwelcoming for Jewish students, we are not
only failing to focus on these challenges, we
are failing as a movement that represents all
students.
I want Jewish students to be able to take a
leading part in my campaigns and in the work
of NUS, and not have to simply defend their
right to be there. We need Jewish students
to get involved in student democracy on a
local level on their campuses, and at a national level in NUS to change our movement,
and once again ensure that Jewish student
voices are at the heart of what we do.

for Bnai Brith UK. LBIA promotes the

More than 300 people packed into the Ricketts Quadrangle at Middlesex University as they celebrated The London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS) 160th
anniversary of training teachers and rabbis. Established as Jews College in 1855,
their graduates today lead communities, run primary and secondary schools,
head up synagogues, and teach in classrooms across the Jewish world.

Sir Malcolm Rifkind can lay claim to giving the longest uninterrupted service as
a minister since Lord Palmerston in the 19th century, having served for 18 years
under two Conservative prime ministers. His glittering political career, under the
premierships of Margaret Thatcher and John Major, saw him serve as Secretary of State for
Scotland, transport and defence, and Foreign Secretary. In these extracts from his newlypublished memoirs, Power & Pragmatism, Rifkind delves into his familys Russian-Jewish

n the Middle East, I was responsible for one important development in the IsraelPalestine
dispute. For the first time, the British
government committed itself to a
two-state solution, with a Palestinian
state living next to the state of Israel.
I made the announcement at a
dinner of the Palestine Medical
Society in London. I still believe that
that is the only solution to this longrunning confrontation. It could have
been achieved if Yitzhak Rabin had
survived.
Today, both Israel and Palestine
are led by politicians not statesmen.
When there are leaders of the
stature and wisdom of Rabin and
Shimon Peres, King Hussein of
Jordan or Anwar Sadat of Egypt,
a breakthrough will be possible.
At that time, the mood was much
more optimistic than it is now.
After a visit to Israel, I was due to
travel to Dubai in the UAE.
The Emirati were apologetic that

they could not yet permit us to fly
our RAF plane direct from Israel to
Dubai. Rather than make two journeys, we found an ingenious solution.
Our plane flew from Israel to an
Egyptian air base on the Red Sea.
We landed there, but only to allow
our wheels to make contact with the
tarmac. Without stopping, the pilot
lifted the aircraft and we flew direct
to the UAE.
As far as our hosts were concerned, we had come from Egypt.
When people want solutions, that is
what they find.
Then, they did. Now, for the time
being, they dont.
It is said that an Israeli and a Palestinian asked God whether there ever
would be peace between their two

that there would be, but it wont be
in my time.
Let us hope He is not infallible.

A Dave Cohen Show: Music Was My First Love
Laughing Horse @ The Cellar Monkey, 24 to 28

Something of a veteran at Edinburgh Festival Fringe,
Perrier Award-nominated Dave Cohen presents his
15th show, Music Was My First Love. The 57-yearold funny man, who is originally from Leeds, says he
was inspired by the original American stand-up
Lenny Bruce, and the appallingly bad taste movie
flop The Producers. As a student he met Rik Mayall
and Ade Edmondson, and became interested in the
new alternative comedy scene.
Over the years, Cohen, who co-founded the
Comedy Store Players, has written for a number
of television shows including Spitting Image, My
Family, Have I Got News For You and Horrible
Histories.
Comedian Phill Jupitus has said of Cohens
show: "The complexities of Jewish family life, the
Middle-Eastern geopolitical situation and the
Bristol punk scene all deftly handled by Dave in
his bitter-sweet and very funny magnum opus.
Amy Howerska: Smashcat
Gilded Balloon's Counting House Venue, until

Fresh from scribbling on Radio 4s Now Show and
NewsJack as well as popping up on Channel 4, Amy
Howerska first appeared on the stand-up circuit
eight years ago. Howerska, who is of Welsh, Jewish,
Polish and Irish descent, says: There is no greater
feeling than making people laugh. I get the same
feelings of joy making a group of friends laugh at
dinner as I do playing a big club. She quips that
audiences should come and see her show, because
I am one of Gods chosen people.
Candy Gigi: If I Had A Rich Man
Heroes @ The Hive, until 28 August

Award-winning performer Candy Gigi Markham puts
her own spin on Fiddler on the Roof in her first hourlong show at Edinburgh Fringe, as she talks and
sings through the pressures of being brought up as
an Orthodox Jew, and the lengths shes gone to to
hunt down a nice Jewish man.
Markham, who was a recipient of the Malcolm
Hardee Award in 2014, grew up in South Wood-
ford and attended King Solomon High School.

The 27-year-old trained as a musical theatre performer, but much preferred clowning around
and pursued comedy instead.
She says: What I like most about comedy is
having the ability to dictate the emotion and
atmosphere of a room. It's a very empowering
feeling to know you can make a room full of
strangers laugh, squirm, scream and cry.
Joe Jacobs: Orthodox Joe
Frankenstein Pub, until 29 August

In his debut, hour-long solo show, Orthodox Joe, aka
Joe Jacobs, charts his attempts at rap stardom.
Jacobs says: Comedy is a great coping mechanism for life, assuming it goes well. My comedy is
inspired by ritual humiliation and petty vindication,
among other things.
With a show billing promising to include plenty
of stand-up comedy, live hip hop and Vanessa Feltz,
Jacobs is sure to be a hit with audiences at this years
Fringe.

Written by Gareth Armstrong and starring Olivier
Award winning actor Guy Masterson, Shylock
explores the life of Shakespeares infamous Jewish
character from The Merchant of Venice and seeks to
answer whether he is a villain or victim.
Masterson, whose maternal uncle is actor Richard
Burton, has toured with the show since 2011. He
says: Its a commentary on Judaism in theatre, and
shows how Shylock and Jews were treated
in the 19th century, and how times progressed and Jews became more enlightened and accepted into British society.
Amy Howerska, Smashcat
Bubbe Schmeisis: Nick Cassenbaum
Summerhall, until 28 August

Writer and storyteller Nick Cassenbaum is
getting a little hot under the collar for his
Fringe show, Bubbe Schmeises, set in the
Canning Town Schvitz, East Londons last
authentic bath house.
Cassenbaum, a graduate of the Royal
Court Young Writers Programme and
co-artistic director of Slap Haddock,
says: Ive been performing ever since
my nan used to teach me dirty Yiddish
jokes when I was five.
She would make me stand on a
table and tell them to her mates as
they smoked fags and ate bagels.
The show is about my journey
around the North Circular with my foul
mouthed grandad on the way to the schvitz to
get my first schmeiss (wash). Expect plenty of
Yiddish-sprinkled humour, schvitzing, shlepping and
conversations about Spurs.
Penelope Solomon: I Was A Penis At The Royal
Festival Hall
The Stand Comedy Club 5 & 6, from 16 to 28 August

Nine years ago, Penelope Solomon made her fringe
debut as a sheep, sponsored by Pringle. Now, three
babies later, she returns to Edinburgh dressed as a
penis, with her new solo show, which the Jewish
comedienne describes as naughty, irreverent and
silly.
Solomon, a trained actress who starred in
BBCs Goodnight Sweetheart, felt her career was

Her autobiographical romp blends stand-up,

brazenly Jewish, celebrating the food, language,
culture and music of our heritage.
My aim is to reach both a Jewish and a nonJewish audience. Laughter breaks down barriers
and unites people. In the current political climate
it is more vital than ever to get out there and
crack a few jokes.

Crete expectations!
Mark Silver takes his daughter for a relaxing stay in
Crete, where the sea is so clear they can see their toes
I
was unable to say a proper goodbye to my

daughter when she began university life last
year despite me only standing a few
inches away from her!
Those parents who cannot wait to get the
children off their hands well, I could never
understand it. And here I was, an emotional
wreck as I faced leaving my eldest daughter,
knowing I would see little of her in the coming
months.
Im a man of words by trade, but couldnt get
any out on this occasion. Meantime, I tried to
hide my tears from her, as she tried to camouflage hers from recently-met room-mates.
Almost a year later, from being unable to
utter a sentence at that bittersweet farewell,
we found ourselves in a situation where EmilyCharlotte could not keep me quiet. I was
jabbering away non-stop as we headed to
the airport for a special week away.
Our destination was the beautiful
Greek island of Crete, staying at
arguably its finest resort.
Several hours later, we arrived at Heraklion Airport and
were in a taxi to Porto
Elounda Golf and Spa Resort, about an hours drive
away, enjoying the splendid
scenery. But the best was
yet to come.

his late eighties, is the

hotels in this tiny piece of
paradise. There is the quiet
Elounda Mare, the only
Relais & Chateaux hotel in
Crete, the family-friendly Porto
where we were staying, and next
door the equally charming Elounda
Peninsula, an all-suite property.
To be honest, such was our love of the
Porto, especially just sunbathing by its Blue
Flag beach (the gold standard for beaches), we
rarely left the complex and Emily-Charlotte was
more than happy just getting a tan before heading off to Majorca with friends.
While her head rarely rose from the sunbed,
I kept popping mine above my book to enjoy
the picturesque surroundings. The beaches are
set in pretty coves, the sea is of such clarity you

can see your toes, and the hills and mountains
make for a wonderful backdrop.
For the energetic, there are various water
sports and it was interesting watching people of
all ages trying to Flyboard, an activity where you
are propelled into the air by powerful water jets.
Good fun it seemed, but a game of table tennis
was as active as it got for me.
Children were having a ball dashing around
with giant water pistols, then apologising after
accidentally soaking someone. In the Crete
heat, we welcomed an impromptu shower.
I occasionally looked across to my daughter
and reflected on the past 19 years and how she
had proved a miracle to mum and dad by arriving nearly 10 weeks premature, weighing in
at a couple of pounds. It amused me how she
was now, giving me the orders telling me
what we were doing next. I didnt
mind (well, at least while we were
on holiday).
Although doing little was
generally the order of the day
(and when you are in the
midst of luxury, why venture off?), she suddenly
fancied a little shopping
so we went into the centre of Elounda, a charming fishing town about a
mile away.
After a walk around
and some lunch, we
strolled back to our hotel
eating ice cream and chatting about her forthcoming
girlie holiday. We tasted
each others ice cream,
laughed and enjoyed our
quality father-daughter time.
Later that afternoon, we both
booked in for a treatment at the
hotels fantastic spa a facial and a back
massage (you guessed wrong it was me who
selected the facial).
Then we got ready for another memorable
meal. There are a host of restaurants to choose
from at the three properties. Obviously locallycaught fish was always a good choice, but we
particularly enjoyed the Cretan night, where

traditional music and dance is the highlight

while enjoying a delicious buffet.
As the dancing got into full swing, it was reminiscent of a Jewish wedding as we formed
a circle and one by one did our thing in the
middle. Apologies if my wine-inspired moves
spoiled anyone's evening!
There is substantial Jewish interest, although
a fair schlep away, at Etz Hayyim Synagogue,
which is about the only surviving remnant of the
once-thriving Jewish community of Crete. It has
been restored and is worth a visit should you
have the time.
Back at base, if you fancy a fine dining
experience, then the Old Mill at Elounda Mare
is quite delightful. Set around an ancient millstone, it is one of the best restaurants in all of
Greece. The scenery, like on several occasions
here, was memorable the sea, sun setting and,
not forgetting my sea bass, were all superb.
And talking of great sights, we returned to
town the next morning and took a short boat
trip to Spinalonga, most famous for being a
leper colony in the first half of the 20th century
and firmly put on the map by Victoria Hislops
dramatic bestselling novel The Island.
Emily-Charlotte was enchanted by this small

island and the stories behind it. She left promising to read Hislops book but, typical dad,
I told her to focus on crime books as she
prepares for a second year studying criminology
at university.
More hard work will earn its reward as I search
for another resort to take her to next year. But it
has to be in the class of Porto Elounda. It would
be a crime not to.

IF YOU wander outside in the coming

weeks and months, you are likely to
come across all sorts of people congregating at certain points, trying
to find computer-generated creatures
they can see on their mobile phones.
They are playing Pokmon Go
a version of a game I played as a child,
now revived and taking the world by
storm in which you find, attempt to
catch and train the creatures called
Pokmon.
This game, apparently, is one of the
latest and most sophisticated examples of augmented reality, a blending of the real and virtual worlds.
Crowds are gathering at Pokestops and striking up conversations
with fellow hunters. I find it remarkable
that, while so much technology takes
us away from human contact, this
game has provided a rare context for
strangers to connect in real life.
On the other hand, the blurring
between real and virtual has caused
some to forget that they live in the real
POKMON GO
world. Players have gathered a litany

of injuries. Some have been mugged
by people laying Poketraps and waiting for others to come to find the
Pokmon. In a disturbing example,
players have walked into the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, or
wandered around Ground Zero.
There is something about the
underlying psychology of this game
that fascinates me. In Pokmon Go,
players walk around the real world.
Connected to the app, they see a
whole other world: street corners become significant because of Pokmon
living there; players bypass famous
sites in pursuit of a Pokmon. While
connected, they are members of this
world, but see everything differently.
This idea, of seeing a world within
a world strikes me as being part of
the essence of being Jewish. We live
within the world, enjoy the same
pleasures, work in the same jobs, face
the same challenges. However, we
have a special lens with which we view
things. In the supermarket, we hold
up our Jewish lens to the shelves and
see not just food, but kosher and nonkosher food, items that are parev,
meaty and so on. We go through a
door, but notice the Mezuzah, give it

a kiss and focus on Gods protection.
So too, with time as the sun sets
on Friday, our world changes as
we get enveloped in Shabbat. For
25 hours, we act differently, speak differently, and desist from active and
creative work as we dedicate our time
to furthering our appreciation of God,
our families and community.
I feel this most poignantly on Yom
Kippur as hundreds gather in shul,
when the longing for purity is palpable. We leave feeling angelic and as
I, with many others, leave shul, we see
those getting off the train, tired and
eager to return home, after just another day going about their business.
We are living within our worldwithin-a-world: the same location, but
with an extra layer of divinity. It poses
challenges; just as those playing Pokmon sometimes stumble around
blindly, we too need to ensure we
dont remove ourselves from the
world. But we have to appreciate the
gift of being able to view our world
with the unique lens that is Judaism
and our Torah.

THIS DOUBLE bill starts out by discussing

the laws of vows. Words are easy to utter,
but the Torah holds us to our word.
A promise is a promise, and must be
fulfilled.
There is a way out in a domestic situation, by a husband annulling his wifes
utterance to spend money.
The reading then proceeds to tell how
the Israelites waged war against the Midianites, a people committed to destroying
them morally and physically. This was
retaliation for their efforts to tempt Israel
into moral delinquency by getting them
to cavort with their wives.
Spoils from that war were divided
among the people and also tithed to the
priests. Moses strongly objected to
the taking of women captives, not least
because this was the reason for the initial
downfall of Israel at the hands of the
Midianites.
Following this war, the tribes of
Reuben, Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh asked not to inherit with the remaining tribes of Israel in the West Bank of
the Jordan, preferring instead to remain
on the East Bank (modern Jordan). Moshe
accepted their request after pointing out
that only if they joined their brothers in

the general conquest could they do so.
The reading of Masei lists the 42 stations of Israel in the Sinai desert and
delineates the borders of what will be the
Holy Land.
In anticipation of entering Canaan,
Moses appoints new tribal leaders to
divide up the land and allocates cities
of refuge and rehabilitation staffed by
Levites.
These cities are especially relevant to
the negligent killers, who escape the fate
of murderers but who are, according to
the Torah, guilty of manslaughter.
Thus, the first four books of the Torah
culminate in the desire of God for His
people to settle the Land of Israel. In
a world beset by anti-Israel rhetoric,
wherein the Zionist/Israeli/Jew is the
default occupier, horned devil and pariah
among otherwise civilised nations, this
reading reassures us that as His servants
and adherents of the law of Moses,
we have nothing to fear from these
accusations.
We are custodians of His land and not
usurpers. Furthermore, we all have the
obligation to stand by Israel in trying
times.
In the words of Moses to the tribes of
Gad and Reuben: Will your brothers do
battle while you sit here?!
In Israel, the freedom for all religions to
live unmolested is an example that the
rest of the Middle East would do very
well to emulate for their own minorities.
As Jews of the diaspora, we have a
fraternal duty to publicise this to the
world. Their humiliation is a danger to us;
their future is also ours.

PARLIAMENTS RECENT vote to renew the Trident

nuclear programme, coupled with Prime Minister
Theresa Mays declaration that she would be prepared to use these weapons, has once again raised
questions over the use of such weapons.
While Biblical legislation regulates the conduct
of people and nations in war, it doesnt clarify the
necessary conditions for it. Perhaps the most telling
text is the one saying when going out to fight
against a city, the first action must be to try to
negotiate a peace deal and that a besieged city is
allowed a gate through which inhabitants may flee.
Rabbinic Judaism has tried to categorise wars in
order to develop rules, so we have the obligatory
war (milchemet mitzvah) commanded by God, and
the permissible war (milchemet reshut) to increase
the honour or size of Israel.
The question of a pre-emptive or preventative
war is a problem recognised in early Talmudic discussion, but not developed there. By extending the
concept of rodef, the murderous pursuer against
whom one can defend proactively, the idea of war
in self-defence has developed.
Basing itself on a reading in Exodus, Talmud
permits that if someone comes to kill you, kill him
first. The defensive war is the only one that is
permissible in halachah. Nuclear weapons are held
as deterrents to war, to dissuade attackers by suggesting terrible reprisal. Military action to deter
attack is permissible in Jewish law. So, too, is lying

AMONG MANY of my peers, Liberal Judaism

is often seen as a watered-down version of
Judaism, or Liberal Jews are regarded as social
action warriors out doing good in society,
while the Orthodox are the ones praying,
studying and being more Jewish than us.
This is reflected somewhat in our own movement, too. Although many synagogues offer
great text study programmes and we have
the excellent Leo Baeck College there arent
any yeshivot within the World Union for
Progressive Judaism.
Liberal Judaism has always prioritised ethics
over ritual, but in order to understand those
ethics, we must also have a strong grounding
in our texts.
There is a demand for this, and it is starting
to happen in informal spaces. Over the
past two years, I have been going to fortnightly Takum Progressivi sessions where
to save an innocent life.

So one might argue that Judaism permits holding such weapons, particularly if there is no intent
to use them except in extremis, and only after an
enemy has attacked.
But other factors come into play. Proportionality
for one for the Talmud prohibits waging war in a
situation where the casualty rate would exceed one
sixth of the population, and wars that can be won
without taking many lives or causing damage are
expected to be waged in this way.
Care for the environment would also arise
Deuteronomy reminds us not to destroy fruit trees
in times of war. How much more so great swathes
of our land laid waste by a nuclear explosion?
The effects of nuclear explosion cannot be contained in a small area, will destroy more than the
permitted sixth of the population, and will have
long-term and global effects on the environment.
One could argue that mutually-assured destruction has constrained governments from exercising
the power they control while wars have continued
to be fought by conventional means, so such
weapons have achieved self-defence by virtue of
their existence. However, in the modern world,
where states are fracturing and failing, there is the
possibility of such arms being controlled by powers
less willing to hold back.
While Jewish law and tradition regulates wartime
conduct, it clearly mandates working for peace,
even during hostilities. One can make a Jewish
case either way regarding nuclear weapons, but the
greater case is always to work towards peace.

boundaries. I would highly recommend that
everyone, of all ages, attends.
I did not read from the Torah for seven years
after my batmitzvah, before realising that I was
both perfectly capable of doing so, and could
lead others through example.
Now, when I sit down to study a parsha
before educating others on it, or when reading
a weekly Dvar Torah, I am almost always struck
by its relevance to our society, current political
situations and my personal life.
By running creative, innovative textual
education for everyone from seven-year-olds
in LJY-Netzer to those rediscovering their
Judaism as young adults we are creating a
new generation of Liberal Jews, who see the
Torah and Talmud as accessible and as providing ideas to grapple with and lessons to be
learnt for their everyday lives.

havent told the banks. All the household direct debits

Computers scare me and I have a problem with viewing
the internet. I go to open my browser, but nothing happens. I don't use my PC for much, just internet and emails
plus the odd letter. Everything else is fine I can send and
receive emails its just the internet that is a problem.
Please help.

Dear Mark
Computers are not scary; think of them as a tool or more like a
washing machine. Most people only use the bits that they need to.
What you are describing does seem like a browser issue since your
connection to the internet is okay, as demonstrated by being able
to send and receive emails.
The first thing I would do is reset the Internet Explorer settings. This
is done by going to control panel, internet options and then the
advanced tab. The reset button is near the bottom. This resolved
many Internet Explorer issues. If the browser still doesnt open, then
I would look at add-in programmes.
Also in control panel, go to programmes and look at the list of installed programmes. Remove any toolbars or browser helpers that
are in the list. Also look for a program called Rapport (Trusteer).
This comes from banks and is usually fine but if it has any problems
it will stop internet browsers from opening as you describe. So long
as you have antivirus, this can be safely removed to fix the problem.
This process will require you to restart your computer. If, after that,
the problem persists, then it would be advisable to contact an
expert to come and see your machine as it is likely to require reinstallation of the browser. Good luck.

Highlights include the Tel Avivstyle brunch with a choice of eggs

labneh with zaatar, feta with
honey, sesame and sumac, zhoug,
and homemade preserves. It also
does a really good shakshuka and
fried egg on hand-pulled turkey
shawarma with dates, pine nuts,
tahini and pita. Soft drinks include limonana and
peach and rose iced tea, while cocktails such as a
classic Bloody Mary and Boozy Earl Grey are also
available. Brunch is served on weekends and bank
holidays, from 11am to 3pm.

Londons Latest Scandal (LLS) isnt anything to do with

the government, the royal family or footballers/
celebrities/popstars, but two delightful French sisters.
When their mother was diagnosed with diabetes, Hayet
and Sonia Zaame decided to create a special
menu for her. As her glycaemic index came
down, their ambitions went up and they
decided to open LLS, on Heath Street
in Hampstead.
Raw, vegan, and gluten-free are buzz
Housewife
words at LLS Cafe, but this doesnt

detract from the goodies on offer. For
their mums sweet tooth, they created
lots of cake. Who knew cake could taste
so good even without eggs, butter, flour
or processed sugar, sweetened instead
with fruit or raw coconut sugar?
Strawberry tart features delicate fruit
atop light whipped coconut cream on a
feathery pastry base, sweetened with
apple and dates; lemon meringue tart is
genius, made with no egg white; gooey
chocolate tart has a coconut and sesame
seed base; purple carrot cake is dreamy
with its coconut cream icing.
Its not all about the sweet stuff
though, and although the sisters ethos is
Eat No Evil, it is not all free from. There
are sourdough toasties stuffed with
blueberries, mozzarella and basil/ falafel,
beetroot hummus and feta/chicken and
salsa. Shakshuka with organic eggs and
the Red Dragon Smoothie Bowl (acai,
banana, mixed berries and granola) are
popular for breakfast, while the salads in
a jar layered with chicken, pearl barley,
blueberries, creamy blue cheese and
walnuts (The Great Chicken Salad) or
quinoa, sweet potatoes, turmeric

cauliflower, mixed leaves and sunflower
seeds (The Golden One) are perfect for
lunch on the go or at your desk.
The evening menu features auberginebased tapas dishes with pesto/miso,
cauliflower and goats cheese and blue
cheese, Beet Burger in vegan bread, a
range of salads and organic wines.
Polish off with the CappuChia, a chia
pudding based cappuccino topped with
coconut whipped cream or a freshlymade juice or smoothie.

It was inevitable that Camden would

eventually fall prey to the wave of
gentrification that is sweeping across
Londons down-and-out areas (Hoxton,
Shoreditch, Kings Cross to name a few), but
its happening with enough subtlety that
Camden is still recognisable by its thronging
crowds and eclectic market stalls. Atrium
Kitchen is a fabulous new, bright, airy
restaurant high above The Stables, which
would never have made it there in the old
days, but is extremely welcome now.
On a sunny morning, walking past the
beach area, replete with deckchairs, I felt
a huge fondness for this part of north
London and all its quirkiness.
Atrium Kitchen bills itself as an all
day hangout, with a menu that covers
breakfast, lunch, dinner and all the pit
stops in between. Its sleek,
contemporary styling is down to the
talent of Tom Dixon, who designed Sea
Containers and Dock Kitchen.
And so to the food. I went for breakfast.
The skinny cappuccino was delightfully
(suspiciously?!) creamy. Two perfectly
poached eggs alongside really good smoked
salmon and sourdough toast set me up

perfectly for the day ahead. My more
indulgent colleague plumped for the threeegg omelette with cheese, spinach,
mushroom and tomato huge, filling and
only 7.50. For lunch and dinner, the menu
options expand into interesting salads
including chicory with watermelon and feta
and a Middle East salad with falafel, and
plenty of hot mains, such as thyme-crusted
halibut and pearl barley risotto. There are also
community boards (sharing platters) and
ciabatta sandwiches during the day, served
with house fries and a salad. The dessert list is
really tempting hard to say no to a passion
fruit crme brle! This is a great new
addition to the north London dining scene
and a good place to eat with friends or have a
meeting. Atrium Kitchen also has a few areas
available for private hire.

There was an interesting discussion about

food hygiene ratings on The Restaurant Club
Facebook group this week.
One member stated that since looking up the food
hygiene ratings at one of her favourite restaurants
she no longer visits.
Simon replied: If you go by hygiene ratings most
restaurants will be off your list, because nearly all of

them fail something at some point.
Restaurant ownder Danny said: Food hygiene
ratings must be taken in context. When I acquired
my pub a year ago it had a 1* rating. I have
invested thousands in bringing it up to scratch, but
now have to wait months to get a reviewer in to
increase the rating.
Joanna said: I have eaten in tropical countries
with flies and other insects all over and lived to tell
the tale. We have gone rules and regulations mad.

Countdown to start of Olympics: 0 1 day

We conclude our Olympics preview by looking at Israels fencer,

weightlifter, taekwondo, triathlete and track and field squad
HANNA KNYAZYEVA-Minenko showed why
she will be one of Israels best hopes for an
individual medal in Rio when she won silver
at last months European Athletic Championships in Amsterdam, in doing so becoming only the second Israeli and first female
to claim a medal at the tournament.
One of eight athletes in the track and field
squad, the Ukrainian-born 26-year-old triple
jumper has represented Israel since 2013,
and claimed her best jump of the season
14.51 metres to seal her historic win. A silver
medallist at last years World Championships in Beijing, together with
bronze wins at the European Games
and European Indoor Championships, she also claimed a fourth
place finish in London four years
ago.
She says: Im a proud Israeli citizen. The silver medal in Amsterdam made me really happy and
gave me a lot of confidence. I really
wanted to hear the Hatikvah national
anthem, but maybe there is an advantage to finishing in second place as that
means I wont be able to relax ahead of Rio.
American-born Donald Sanford will be
hoping for better luck than he got in London
four years ago when his shoes were stolen
from his bag just ahead of his 400m qualifying
heat, meaning he had to run in a teammates
trainers.
Only being confirmed of his place in Rio in
March, he says hes hopeful it will go well
this time around, and that he can help can Is-
raeli youth interested in taking up sport. In

America its 100 percent sports from the start.
In middle school and high school its part of
the curriculum to graduate. In Israel its not as
essential, he said. I try to be an example as
much as I can. Its good for the kids to see it,
also in judo, gymnastics and other sports.
Kenyan-born Lonah Chemtai had a tough
ride in getting to represent Israel after the Interior Ministry rejected her status as an Israeli
athlete. First arriving in Israel eight years ago,
her status was rejected for years, and it
was only the last minute intervention of Interior Minister Aryeh
Deri which finally saw her assured of her place. Nevertheless, happy to finally be
competing for her new
country, she said: Im ready
for it. Its my first Olympics,
and Im proud to represent
Israel.
Maor Tiyouri joins her in the
female marathon event, with
Ageze Guadie, Tesama Moogas
and Marhu Teferi taking part in the
mens event. Dmitry Kroytors competing in
the mens high jump.
Delila Hatuel is the countrys sole fencer at
the Games. Taking part in the womens foil,
shes currently ranked ninth in the world and
finished in 19th place at the Beijing Games in
2008. Born in Acre, she won gold at the Maccabiah Games in 2009.
Ron Attias will be Israels first ever male
fighter in the taekwondo event. Fighting in
the U58kg category, he qualified for the

Games after winning gold at a qualification tournament in Turkey back in January. A silver medal winner in the
European Taekwondo championships as
a teenager, on qualifying, he said: I
want to say many thanks to everyone
who has supported and believed in me,
there is no better feeling than this.
With triathlon only introduced into
the Games in 2000, Ron Darmon will become the first Israeli to compete in the
event, having reached 52 in the rankings.
Comprising of a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle
and 10km run, he said: When I started
triathlon, I struggled to even put my feet
in the shallow end of the pool, now Ill
be diving in the deep water at the
Olympic Games as one of the top triathletes in the world!
Israel will have a
weightlifter at the
Games for the first
time in 20 years. Igor
Olshanetskyi was only
added to the delegation when the Israel
Weightlifting Federation was handed a lastminute
wild-card
following the suspensions handed out to Russia, Kazakhstan and
Belarus for anti-doping violations. Finishing
the European Championships in 12th place,
he finished last years World Championships
in 21st place.

THE TEAM captain of Israels first Commodore Cup team has hailed his teams
performance as a fantastic achievement.
Taking part in the prestigious event
for amateur yachtsmen in Cowes on the
Isle of Wight, Omer Brand said: Weve
started a new team from a country that
has no history or experience in that field
and we managed to put a team in a serious regatta. We also were a force to be
reckoned with in that regatta. We were
very competitive and even managed to
leave behind all of the British teams.
Im very pleased with the results. In
the end we finished fifth overall, while in
the inshore races (all the races less the
offshore ones) we came in third overall,
which is a fantastic achievement.
Now looking ahead to the future, he
added: Were now thinking about how

would love to continue with getting my
team to more professional sailing regattas. Were also going to continue developing sailing in Israel with a youth
program, creating events and coaching
adults.
With the right support behind us,
the future can be very bright and the
skys the limit.
MACCABI MASTERS Football chairman Stuart Lustigman has expressed his

surprise that more players
arent competing in the

With the new season,
which starts next month, seeing one less team in Division
One, Lustigman, who
founded the league, 16 years
ago, said: It surprises me
that, with the opportunity to
extend playing careers beyond 35-years-old and on
quality pitches, more players

Marharyta Dorozhon saw her
Olympic dream end in tears
on Sunday night after she
failed to throw the required
distance to qualify for Rio.
The Ukrainian-born 28year-old had already thrown
the required distance last
year, but regulations laid out
by the Olympic Committee of
Israel stipulated she had to
throw over 60 meters in 2016
in order to secure her place.
However, at her final
chance at Tel Avivs Hadar
Yosef Stadium, her best attempt was 48.03 meters, before she called it a day, in
tears, due to injury.

THE SPORTS director of the Israeli
Olympic Delegation is hoping their
largest ever Olympics squad can win the
countrys eighth medal in Games history.
Speaking ahead of the start of the Rio
Games, which get underway with tomorrow nights opening ceremony at the
iconic Maracana stadium, Danny Oren, the
director of the Elite Sporting Department
of the Israeli Olympic Association, told
Jewish News at least one medal and
places in ten finals would constitute a successful tournament.
Despite having taken part in all but one
Summer Olympic Games since 1952,
theyve only reached the podium seven
times, with their one gold win coming from
Gal Fridman at the 2004 Games in Athens.
Oren (pictured) said: A good Games for
us will be to win at least one medal and
then see athletes reach ten finals that for
us will be satisfactory.
Helping them in their quest to add to
their medal tally is the fact theyre taking
their largest ever delegation, the total of
47 being four more than the previous record set at the 2008 Games
in Beijing.
But insisting that doesnt mean
theres more pressure on the countrys athletes to deliver, he said: I
think the opposite, the biggest
delegation weve ever had
means theres less pressure. The squad is
also more equally
divided, in fact
its 54-46 percent in favour
of women and
we are happy
with that.
Highlighting where
he thinks an eighth
medal can be won, he
said: We could get a medal

Adding that excitement back home in
Israel is building, he said: Since June,
everyones interest in Israel was with the
European Championships, but now its
time for the Olympics and I think during the Games, there will be even more
[interest than for the Euros].
Theres a lot of interest in
the Games, a lot of the television channels, the news
and sport channels and
newspapers are talking about it and
about our athletes.
We cant wait for the
start.
