Welcome to the Big Dance! You and your colleagues will now represent a major imperialistic nation or empire.
As any self-respecting empire would do, you have a need and desire for as many productive colonies as
possible. Your task is to create The Greatest Empire in the World! We are talking about the 1800-1914 era.
To accomplish this, you will compete against other empires in this years Imperialism Draft! The draft will
work like the MLB, NFL or NBA drafts for new players. You will be assigned picks based on your previous
power or performance. You will select colonies in the draft based on their resources and attractiveness to your
empire, and well as your empires need for certain resources and strategic locations.
Directions:
1. Your group needs to meet, choose an empire, communicate your choice to the draft commissioner,
design a logo and choose a mascot for your empire. You can choose to follow tradition with empirical
images for your location or come up with something new. Your logo and mascot will need to be
displayed on sheets of paper on draft day.
2. Your group needs to do research on the various available colonies during this time period. Look for
a. Important or strategic locations
b. Advantageous geographic conditions
c. Wealth of natural resources
d. Weak or poor political structures
e. Population numbers for workers
Your research will need to be done on Scouting report sheets that will be turned in for project points.
3. Your group needs to develop a list of potential draftees, ranking each colony you will choose in order
of your perception and opinion of its value to you. Besides just a colony name on your list, you need to
give specific reasons that it is valuable and desirable for your empire.
4. You group needs to be prepared for draft day. On draft day, be prepared to make your picks. You may
trade picks with other countries, especially if you have a bad pick order and you can best obtain the
colonies you want be negotiating a deal or trade. Each group will be graded by the value of the colonies
that they draft and obtain. The values are a secret until the end of the draft. The empire/team with the
most points is declared the winner and will receive extra credit for #winning!
5. Draft Empires are as follows
a. American Empire
b. British Empire

c. Russian Empire
d. French Empire
e. Japanese Empire
