ETHNICCHANGESONTHEPRESENTTERRITORYOFSERBIAIN
THEPERIODVIXCENTURY
Iliriksufferedfromstrongdepopulationfromthemiddleofthesixthcentury,becauseoffrequentSlavbrakingin,
and withappearanceoftheAvarsandtheirdevastatinginthelastdecadesofthesixthcentury,thisprocessbecame
faster. Vanishing of big urban centres Singidunum, Naiss and Viminacium, and some smaller urban unities, the
inhabitants of Ilirik, remained in this area despite Barbarian attacks, and they stayed mostly in rural environment
situatedmostlyinmountainsandareashardtoreach.
InthefirstdecadesoftheseventhcenturytheSlavtribesfromPanoniaandVlakastartedtoinhabitpermanently
thesouthernareaoftheDanube,belongingpoliticallytoByzantium. ThemigrationoftheSlavswasdevelopingintwo
phaseswhichchronologicallyhappenedalmostatthesametime.Thefirstonewasbetween614622andthesecond
onewasbetween629634,whentheSerbsinhabitedthearea.InethniccontexttheterritoryofpresentSerbiainthe
periodbetweenVIIXcenturywasroughlydividedintotwoseparateunits.Duringthefirstphaseofinhabitingthearea
ofpresentSerbiawasmostcertainlyinhabitedbytheSlavsbytheVelikaMoravaandthelowerflowoftheTimok,
whereas the basic mass of inhabitants continued towards South in the direction of Macedonia, northern Greece,
reaching through continental Greece to Peloponnese. The second phase, being observed as a whole, represents the
migrationoftheSerbs,andtheterritoryoftheSoutheasternSerbiawastakenbytheSlavs,i.e.theareawhichwas
named Raka in the Middle Ages. During the period between VII X century, the territory of Raka, remained
completely ethnically Slavic, what was confirmed both by historical sources (Porfirogenit) and owing to

archaeological,anthropologicalandphilologicalresearch.But,aroundtheRakafrontier,i.e.ontheEastandWestof
this area, a great number of Romean inhabitants. In the South, the ethnic boundary between the Slavs and local
inhabitantswentnorthwardPrizren,andreachingupNorthwenttothefrontierofantiqueArsa.Furtheroneastward
andnortheastward,itcontinuedtowardsNiandnorthernflowoftheTimok.AgreatenclaveoftheRomeansexisted
intheareabetweenPrizrenandsoutheastwardSkoplje.SopresentSerbiawasethnicallydivided,roughly,intoareas
on the West and ontheEastofVelikaMorava.TheareaontheWestofVelikaMoravabecameSlavicveryearly,
owing to the fact that the Slavs almostdidnotfindanylocalinhabitants.OntheEastofvelikaMoravaautohtonic
elementremainedverylargeanditscomplexitywashelduntilthebeginningoftheeleventhcentury.But,theRomeans
startedmigrationsfromtheeleventhcenturyfrommountainareastowardthevalleyswheretheSerbs/Slavslived,the
processofpopulationenclosingstarted.Thefinaloutcomeofthismigrationoflocalinhabitantsappearedtobepresent
populationofSerbia,whichisanthropologicallystudiedautohtonewhereasculturallyitisSlavic.
