Lesson Outline:
Introduce (5mins)
Having talked a little bit about persuasive writing and ads were going to think about - What makes a good
ad?. Turn to the person next to you and have a quick 1min second discussion about what makes a good
ad? Share with class. So we are going to learn an acronym today which will help us to remember what
makes a good ad and then we are going to have a go at making our own poster ads.
Explore (30mins)
Activity 1: Powerpoint
Get a student to read off powerpoint.
When ad shown after attention slide ask: How does this ad get your attention? What kind of things draw
your attention to it? Talk about target audience with nutella example - child vs. adult. When ad shown after
interest slide ask: How does this ad demonstrate the purpose of the product to the audience? When ad
shown after desire slide ask: How does this ad make you want the product (even though its advertising
something that might not be immediately appealing). When ad shown after action slide ask: How does
this ad encourage action? Language used? Summarise A.I.D.A and look at how Lego ad vs. Coke ad
demonstrates A.I.D.A or doesnt demonstrate A.I.D.A.
Activity 2: Poster (NB: Leave A.I.D.A acronym on board)
Explain that students are going to have a go at making their own poster ad using the A.I.D.A method. Two
products that students can advertise on their posters - toothbrush and stapler. Think about the purpose of
these two items, how you might grab someones attention - language? Colour? Size of item?, how you
might convince someone to buy your item or look at it further, how you might convince someone that they
NEED the product. Expectations: eye-catching, attention grabbing, clearly shows what the product might
be used for, colourful etc.
Reflect (5mins)
Recap what A.I.D.A stands for. If students havent finished their ad let them know they will have more time
to finish it next week. Finish lesson - books in trays, pack up desk, (chairs on table?), have a great long
weekend!
