RE:

Investigation of Notary Public Edith Grant

Dear Mr. Gillespie:

Thank you for contacting the Notary Section of the Executive Office of the Governor to
file a complaint of misconduct against Florida Nofary Public Edith Grant. This office takes
allegations of notary misconduct seriously, and relies upon vigilant citizens, like you, to ensure
Florida notaries public adhere to the responsibilities and prohibitions of their office. However,
the jurisdiction of this office is limited to the laws governing notary conduct, as defined in
Chapter 117, Florida Statutes, and we are unable to file criminal charges or make a document
null and void.
After investigating your complaint, this office has determined there is insufficient
evidence to support the reported allegations of misconduct. However, upon further review, this
office found Ms. Grant did otherwise violate Chapter 117, Florida Statutes, in her notarization of
the challenged document. Therefore, a letter of caution has been sent to Ms. Grant, which will
remain in her commission file for review in the event future complaints of misconduct are filed
against her.
Additionally, please find enclosed the first page and attached $0.25 of your
correspondence received by this office on July 6, 2016. Please be advised that this office has
forwarded your public records request to the Executive Office of the Governor's Office of Open
Government, which will send you an invoice should your request incur any monetary charges.
If you have suffered monetary damages due to the alleged notary violation(s), you may
wish to file a claim against the notary's surety.bo~d. To obtain the name and address of the
bonding company or a copy of the bond, you may contact the Department of State's Notary
Commissions and Certifications Section at (850) 245-6975. Additionally, you may want to
