ADRIAN WILLAERT
propage neanmoins a toute I'Europe.

C e l u i - c i se d i s t i n g u a e g a l e me n t comme c o m p o s i t eur de madrig a u x , sans avoir

Attaignant. Sa Vers ion reste fidele a l 'ecriture de Willaert, i l ajoute seulement ]es
ornementations.

In

Van A rousez

Cingari simo is
een mascherata alla napo l itana, waar als zigeuners gemaskerde ind i v iduen enkele
lichtekooien opvrijen met hoogst dubbelzinnig e toespelingen. In dit stuk on tleende
v i l l a n e s c h e . Deze w aren e ig e n l i jk d an s l iederen d ie g e b r u i k t werden b i j
pantomimevoorstellingen.

Aller mi fault di Adriano (I! secondo libro de intavolatura di liuto, 1599) is oorspronkelijk
opkwam in Italie.
gamba.

ADRIAN WILLAERT (ca.1490 -1562)

If we had to name one composer who dominated Italian musical life in the middle of the
16th century, it would have to be the Fleming Adrian Willaert (c. 1 490- 1562). He was
probab1y born in Roeselare, but during his youth had strong links with the city of Bruges.
After a period of study with Jean Mouton in Paris he entered the service of the noble
family of Este in Perrara in approximately 15 15; this famil y held one of the most fertile of
the Renaissance courts and he was thus assured of numerous contacts with the Papal Court
in Rome. In 1527 he became maestro di cappella of St. Mark' s in Venice, a position that
he was to occupy until his death.
12

Notwithstanding the fact that the economic might of that rich merchant city was beginning
to wane, its artistic splendours still set the tone for the whole of Europe. The city spared no
effort to engage the best singers and instrumentalists that were available and thus became a
breeding-ground for musical talent aqd innovation. The musical direction of St. Mark's
was therefore seen as one of the most elevated positions of contemporary European
musical life. Willaert's fame increased so rapidly that many young composers travelled to
the City of the Doges to study with Messer Adriano; in this manner Willaert was able to
influence a whole generation of musicians. Andrea Gabrieli, Ciprian de Rore, Jakob Buus,
Constanzo Porta, Nicola Vincentino and the theoretician Gioseffo Zarlino were but a few
of his pupils.
Adrian Willaert was a composer of many facets, one who was active in many genres. In
the field of religious music he fulfilled an important rote in the development of the motet
and stimulated the creation of polychoral music with his psalms for two choirs.
He was nevertheless active in secular music; he had written French chansans during his
Paris years and continued to write them i n Ital y where a taste for things French was
fashionable at the time, notably with Pope Leo X and the Court of Ferrara, thanks to
Ercole II d ' Este' s marriage to Renee de France. His earl iest songs still betray the
influences of models by Josquin and Mouton, as we can see in the mischievous Dessus Le
marche d'Arras with its typical alternations between high and low voices and also in the
three-part Allons, allans gay. The songs from his later collections such as Jouissance vous
donneray and Qui La dira La peine de mon coeur can de distinguished by their flowing
melodic lines, an increased fullness of sound and a richly irnitative style that was more
usually applied to the motet. The exact origin of Arousez vo violette and its suggestive text
cannot be stated with any certainty, although several sources attribute its authorship to
Willaert.
Willaert also composed madrigals, alongside composers such as Verdelot and Areadelt
who specialised more in the genre. The four-part Quante volte diss'io is an early work, but
already demonstrates Willaert's preference for the poet Petrarch. Willaert points towards a
13

new style in his madrigal writing with Qual dolcezza giamai, an ode to the singer
Polissena Pecorina; five-part writing became the norm and the polyphonic style strongly
resembles that of the motet. The madrigal was more serious and sophisticated in its
poetical and musical expression, but the villanesca alla napolitana was much lighter and
simpler. This form became fashionable in the 1530s, whilst Willaert published a collection
of them in 1544-1545.
The texts depict all sorts of popular tableaus taken directly from life; a suitor who pokes
fun at old wives (Vecchie letrose), a Iady who ridicules her rejected Iover on the street
(Sempre mi ride sta), and a youth who tries to arrange a rendezvous with his Iover in a
serenade (0 bene mio). Cingari simo is a mascherata alla napolitana in which individuals
disguised as gypsies try to chat up a few courtesans with highly suggestive texts.
Willaert borrows the cantus part in this piece from a three-part version by Gian da Nola,
but places it in the tenor voice. The versions for solo voice and Jute of A quando a quando
havea and of 0 bene mio are intabulations of works by the Spanish vihuela player Diego
Pisador, taken from his Libro de musica de vihuela ( 1552). Un giorno mi prega is a
villotta, a Norhern Italian variant of the villanesca. These works were originally songs for
dances that were used in pantomime performances. Zoia zentil and Occhio non fu giamai
belong to a more serio u s genre; they are canzone, with words by Angelo B eolco,
nicknamed li
Ruzante. The odd one out in this collection is the venomous E se per Ia gelosia; it
appeared in 154 1 in a collection of bicinia, two-part pieces that were also used for music
teaching.
Adrian Willaert also wrote pure instrumental music. Tagether with his colleague Julio da
Modena and several pupils he published a collection entitled Musica Nova in 1540; this
was a collection of ricercare, polyphonic instrumental pieces in motet style. These were
the first works in such a style to be printed. They were rapidly followed by works by other
composers, whilst Willaert hirnself would later publish a series of three-part ricercare.
14

The many instrumental arrangements that appeared all over Europe of Willaert's music
bear witness to the fact that his music was, if anything, too well-known in his lifetime.
Dessus Le marche d'Arras comes from a keyboard tabulature from the Parisian music
publisher Pi erre Attagnant dated 1544. His version follows Willaert' s voice-Jeading
exactly, although he adds decorations to it. The blind Neapolitan keyboard virtuoso
Antonio Valente made a reduced version of Chi La dira (lntavolatura de cimbalo, 1576),
whilst Giovanni Antonio Terzi ' s Canzon Aller mi fault di Adriano (11 secondo libro de
intavolatura di liuto, 1599) was originally a duet for two Jutes. On the other hand, the
Ti ento IV sobre Qui Ja dira by the Spanish composer Anton i o C abezon is a new
composition on the same theme as Willaert's song.
Instrumental virtuosity was a strongly growing element in music in Italy at the end of the
16th ceritury. Typical of this are the divisions, which are richly omamented voices from
polyphonic works that can be performed as a type of commentary on the original work.
The Venetian cornettist Giovanni Bassano's A La fontana (Ricercate, passagi et cadentie,
1585) is based upon the superius part of Willaert's song A La fontaine. Jouissance by the
Parma organist and gamba player Vincenzo Bonizzi (Alcune Opere, 1626) is written for
the viola bastarda. These divisions are not limited to the single line of Willaert's original,
but continually Jeap from high to low, covering the whole range of the viola da gamba.

Ausstrahlung weiterhin ber ganz Europa.
b ed e u t e n d betrachtet. W i l l a erts R u f wurde so gro, da s i c h zah lrei c h e j u n g e
Komponisten i n d i e Dogenstadt begaben, um Unterricht v o n Messer Adriano zu
findenwir Andrea Gabriel i , Cipriano De Rore, Jacob Buus, Con stanzo Porta, Nicola
Vicentino sowie den Theoretiker Gioseffo Zarlino.
Adrian Willaert war ein eklektischer Komponist. Was die Kirchenmusik anbelangt, so trug

dreistimmige Allons, allans gay.
zum B e i s p i el Jouissance v o u s donne ray und Qui dira La p e i n e de man coeur,
17

Duo fr zwei Lauten waren.
Bedeutung.
A la fontana d e s venezianischen Zink spieler Giovanni B a s s an o
18

Jou issance von Vincenzo B o n i zz i (Alcune opere, 1626), einem

Qual dolcezza giamai

Di canto di S irena
lnvolo i sensi e l ' alm'a chi l'udiro,
Che di quella non sia minor assai
Che con Ia voce angelica e divina
Desta nei cor Ia bella Pecorina.
A Ia dolce armonia
I santi angeli intenti
Chinand ' in questa part' il vago viso

Doux est Je chant de Ia sirene

Qui a toujours seduit celui qui l'ecoute.
La voix de Ia belle Pecorina
Angelique et divine,
Seduit tout autant nos coeurs.
Par cette harmonie,
L'air devient serein,
La mer se calme,
Les vents se taisent
Et Je ciel nous encercle de joie
Les anges attentifs
lnclinent leurs beaux visages vers elle.

S'oblian'ogni piacer del paradiso.

Et ella in tant'honore
Dice con lieto suon ; qui regn' Amore.

Ils oublient tous !es plaisirs du Paradis.

Et elle, honoree par tous,
Dit gaiement : I' Amour regne ici.

I. Qual dolcezza giamai

Through its sweet harmony the air becomes

serene, the sea is calm and the winds are
silent, whilst the heavens rejoice from day
to day. The holy angels are Juli of attention
and bow their fair heads to her.
They forget the pleasures of Paradise.
She, honoured by alt,
says merrily Love reigns here.

What sweetness of the Sirens ' sang once

seduced the senses and the souls of those
who heard them.
Tha t which the fair Pecorina arouses in
our hearts with her angelically divine voice
is no less beautiful.

My father had a castle built;

Come, let's be merry, my darfing.
It's not big, but it is beautiful;
the tiles are of gold and si/ver.
Come, let's be merry, my darfing.
He also has threefair horses;
the king had none so fine.
Come, let's be merry, my darling.
One is grey, the other dark brown,

Come, let's be merry, my darling.
He is the on.e we'll use to go out and play,

Quante volte diss'io,

Alhor pien di spavento :
Costei per ferrno nacque in paradiso!
Cosi carco d' oblio
n divin portamento
E'l volto e le parole e'l dolce riso
M'haveano, e si diviso
Da l' irnagine vera,
Ch'io dicea sospirando :

Vecch ie Ietrose scannaros'e pazze.

How many times have I said,

my heartfull offear,
She was certainly born in Paradisel
Filled with forgetfulness as I was,
her divine bearing, her face,
her words and her sweet smile
had taken me so farfrom her real image
that I said sighing
How and when have I come here?
believing myself to be in Heaven and not
where I was
From that day I have loved these meadows
so much
that I can find no peace elsewhere.

8. Vecchie Letrose non valete niente

Laides vieilles, vous ne valez rien,
Si ce n'est pour epier
Frappez au bton,
Laides vieilles, egorgeuses et folles.

Except to set an ambush in the thicket
Pult an the club,
Nasty old hags, thieving and mad.

12. E seper gelosia

Who can teil the pain in my heart
and the sorrow that I bearfor my friend.
I know only sadness and weariness,
I would much rather be dead.

Et si c'est par jalousie

Que tu restes toujours aupres de moi,
La faute n'est pas mienne,
La raison vient de toi.
Je te ferai attendre
Une quereile te fera patienter
Parce que j'ai un mari.

12. E se per gelosia

Prem'a sta bona via.
Co' I rem'in mezo mi miss'a vogare
A Iei molto piacque'l mio gran stentare.
Co' I vent'in poppa pensai d'anegare.
Ma m'aiuto da Berghem mio compare
Et sospirando dissi :
Cosi tratti gl' arnici

I picked up the oars and began to row.

My great efforts pleased her greatly.
I thought that I would drown, there was so
much wind in my sails, but a friend from
Bergamo came to help me.
Sighing, I said
Weil, my young widow,
do you always treatfriends like this
when they 're in your boat?

One day a young widow asked me

to sail round a dangeraus reefwith her.
She directed her little boat
and knew how to use the rudder skilfully.
With a sly and crafty voice
she called to her boat
stay there, keep going, row, you 're on the
right track.

A quand'a quand'haveva una vicina
Ch'era a vedere la stella Diana.
Tu la vedevi, tu li parlavi
Beato te se Ia basciati tu.

Un jour, j'ai eu une voisine

Comparable a l'etoile Diane
Tu I' as vu, tu lui a parle
Heureux si tu pouvais l'embrasser.

Che veramente pare una regina

Ogn'uno ne faria inarnorare.
Tu Ia vedevi, tu li parlavi
Beato te se la basciati tu.

En verite, pareil a une reine,

Chacun en est arnoureux
Tu l'as vu, tu lui a parle,
Heureux si tu pouvais l'embrasser.

Che quando se levava Ia matina

Phebo per scomo se ne ritornava.
Tu Ia vedevi, tu li parlavi
Beato te se la basciati tu.

Quand elle se levait le matin

Apollon se retirait honteux
Tu l'as vu,tu lui a parle
Heureux si tu pouvais l' embrasser.

Mo mi credeva starne contento

Et trovoomi le mani pien di vento.
Tu Ia vedevi, tu li parlavi
Beato te se Ia basciati tu.

1' ai cru etre heureux avec elle

Mais me voici les mains vides.
Tu I' as vu,tu lui a parle
Heureux si tu pouvais l'embrasser.

Once, once I had a neighbour
who looked like the morning star Diana.
You saw her, you spoke with her,
lucky were you, ifyou kissed her.
In truth she looked like a queen,
she made everyone fall in love with her.
You saw her, you spoke with her,
lucky were you, if you kissed her.
When she rase in the morning,
Apollo the sun god retired abashed.
You saw her, you spoke with her,
lucky were you, ifyou kissed her.
I, I believed that I was happy with her,but
here I am now with only the wind in my hands.
You saw her,you spoke with her,
lucky were you, if you kissed her.
