How to Write a Reflection Essay.

Basically, writing a reflection essay is a good exercise to sharpen

your critical thinking skills. You have to understand what it is that you have to reflect on before
proceeding with the essay, otherwise you will only lose track of your ideas or, worse, you will not be able
to write anything that will make sense. Keep in mind that a reflection essay is more like a journal where
you jot down your thoughts or how you feel about a certain topic. Your topic may be a film, a book, an
event, or just about anything.
Before starting with your reflection essay, ask yourself a couple of questions, such as: how do I feel about
this topic? How does it affect me, if it does at all? If it doesn't affect me, why? Notice that the questions are
all personal. That is because a reflection essay asks you to express your insights. Knowing the answers to
these personal questions can help you begin your reflection essay. Do not limit yourself to these three
questions. Explore more that asks you to state your opinion. Leave out the facts first. Concentrate on your
insights.
After having the answers to the personal questions stated above, list your answers. Thereafter, summarize
them into a single sentence. This will be your main controlling idea or central thesis which will guide you
throughout the rest of your reflection essay. With your thesis statement, identify the arguments or ideas
that will support it. You may expand or write more about each supporting idea in a paragraph. Each of
these paragraphs will then be the body of your essay. Try to include factual statements in these body
paragraphs, such as what you have observed, so that your claims are well supported. Sufficient reference
to facts is a good way of giving substance to your reflections.
After you have finished writing the body paragraphs of your reflection essay, return to your personal
questions. This time, however, ask yourself as if you are trying to confirm what you have written: is this
how I truly feel about this topic? Is this how it did affect me, if it did at all? If it didn't affect me, why? This
is a matter of reaffirming your honesty in writing your reflection essay. You should only provide your
truthful reflections, otherwise writing down the things that are far from what you truly felt defeats the
very purpose of reflecting on the topic. Also, write down how and why you arrived at your insights. Be
consistent and avoid one idea in one paragraph clashing with another idea in another paragraph.
In your reflection essay's conclusion, briefly restate your main insight or thesis. You may end with a
question, asking how others might have thought about the same topic. You may also end with a challenge
to your readers, such as asking them to reflect on the same topic and ask the same questions. At any rate,
what is most important to remember is that a reflection essay is generally a personal assessment of a topic
that may or may not affect you and others.

Method 2 of 3: Business Casual for Women

1.

1
Remember that skirts and dresses are acceptable as long as the hem falls past
the knees.
o

As with men, black and grey are more formal, making for a safer bet.

Avoid low-cut dresses or those with high slits.

Avoid dresses (especially) and skirts that are more skin-tight.

No sundresses.

2
Opt for pants such as khakis, corduroy pants, linen pants or dress pants.

No jeans, unless otherwise noted. If jeans are allowed by your employer,

distressed jeans, jeans with holes, and "boyfriend" jeans are not desirable choices.

Neutral colors are best.

3
Choose from a variety of shirts. Women have a few more options in this department
than the men. Opt for conservative and not too revealing. Blouses, plain shirts, cotton
shirts, sweaters, turtlenecks, vests, and sleeveless shirts are all acceptable.
o

Tucked-in or untucked can both go, depending on the shirt.

Unusual patterns are acceptable, as long as they are not wild. The
standard, however, is a monotone shirt.
Use a collar for a more formal look, and collarless shirts for a less formal

o
look.

4
Try footwear such as leather shoes, flat trouser shoes, high heels and open toed
shoes. Avoid flip flops, sandals and sneakers.

Heels are okay, so long as they aren't too conspicuous.

5
Complete the business casual look. Remember dress socks or pantyhose (with skirts
or dresses) and tastefully accessorize with light jewelry and a simple purse.

Check the list. Ask yourself the following set of questions if you're still not sure whether
your outfit is acceptable.[3]
o

Would I wear this clubbing? The answer should be 'no.'

Would I wear this to sleep? The answer should be 'no.'

Would I wear this to do yard work? The answer should be 'no.'

Would I wear this to a costume party? The answer should be 'no.'

GAINESVILLE, Fla. Wisdom comes with age if people learn to feel and reflect, but there is little
incentive to do so in a hectic American culture that reveres Spock-like logic, a new University of Florida
study finds.
When you think of a wise person like Jesus Christ, Buddha or Gandhi they dont just have book
knowledge, they know how to deal with life partly because of deep insight and compassion for others,
said UF sociologist Monika Ardelt.
Unfortunately, our fast-paced and fact-based society emphasizes cognitive skills over elements that round
out a person enough for others to say they are wise, she said.

Wisdom is important because people who have it tend to be much more satisfied in old age. Theyre also
less likely to be afraid of death, said Ardelt, who also is affiliated with UFs Institute on Aging and the
Center for Spirituality and Health.
If older people dont keep up with the latest advances in computers or other technology, they are
considered dead wood. We may pay lip service to the wisdom of the elderly, but when it comes right down
to it, we dont value it.
Ardelt developed a scale to measure wisdom in the elderly that contains three essential elements:
cognitive, or a deeper kind of knowledge and the ability to understand life; affective, or feelings of
sympathy and compassion for others; and reflective, or the ability to develop insights by looking at
events from many different perspectives.
Her study, published in the May issue of Research on Aging, showed all three characteristics are
significant, but the reflective element is the most crucial for wisdom to develop.
By overcoming egocentricity basically blaming other people or circumstances for your own situation it
decreases your self-centeredness, and youre able to see reality in more objective ways, Ardelt said.
For her study, Ardelt had 180 men and women between the ages of 52 and 87 complete written surveys
assessing their cognitive, reflective and affective personality characteristics. The participants were
recruited from 18 religious, social and civic groups in North Central Florida contacted through word of
mouth and the telephone book. The surveys asked them about their general well-being, purpose in life,
subjective health, history of depression and attitudes toward death.
The participants scoring highest on a combination of cognitive, reflective and affective personality
characteristics defined as wisdom by the study reported the greatest amount of subjective well-being
and ability to cope with life and were least likely to fear death, she said.
To become wise, you must at least have the desire for human development and spiritual growth, she
said. To simply say, This is the way I am and theres nothing I can do about it doesnt bode well for
wisdom.
Unlike Western cultures, which stress the cognitive dimension, Eastern philosophies tend to integrate the
cognitive, reflective and affective elements, Ardelt said. A recent positive sign in American universities,
however, has been the trend to incorporate the role of religion and spirituality in aging studies, she said.
Just as knowledge without self-reflection does not lead to wisdom, neither does sympathy and
compassion by themselves, she said.

Someone who is sympathetic and compassionate may be able to help other people, but if they dont have
the reflective component the ability to look at themselves from different perspectives they cant help
themselves gain more wisdom, Ardelt said. They might be very good therapists, but their own marriages
might be breaking apart, she said.
The adage that wisdom comes with age, Ardelt said, is not necessarily true. But older people have a
greater chance of being wise than younger people because they have lived longer, and developing
wisdom usually takes time, she said.
Some young people are wise beyond their years, but that is often because they experience some tragic
event or suffer from a serious illness early in life, she said.
Many positive characteristics are associated with wisdom, including the ability to cope with physical and
social decline, Ardelt said. Also important is a sense of inner control or mastery over ones life, she said.
One thing that wise people do is to accept things as they are and not as they want them to be, she said.
If you can accept the reality of the present moment without trying to change it according to your wishes,
in some ways you feel you are in control.

Reflection Essay Example to Give

You an Idea How It Is Written
NOVEMBER 15, 2012 | BY ADMIN

It may be hard to write a type of essay for the first time. If this is your first time
to write a personal reflective essay, you can refer to the reflection essay
example below.

I Survived a Writing Class

Writing is one of the things I used to hate the most. I hate it when teachers
would ask us to pass an essay. I hate it when I have to compete in writing
contests because teachers asked me to. Nevertheless, winning in those contests
boosted my self confidence. I thought I hate writing but I am good at it so I
started to like it a bit. Things changed when I had two writing classes in college.
I realized I was not good in writing.

The first writing class I had to attend in college was all about writing different
types of essay. The teacher would group us into four or five. We would read each
others essay and give comments afterwards. I was confident with my first essay
but the people in my group are great critics. My confidence started to melt like
an ice cream in a summer day. However, the grades given by our teacher for
those essays saved some of the ice cream. I, nonetheless, enjoyed most days in
that writing class except the part where I have to sit with the group. I realized
that I, including my confidence, should not be affected by criticisms especially
not by comments from fellow students who were there to learn just like me.
I passed the first writing class so I am confident for the second. The papers are a
lot harder to write. We had to write four papers within the semester and a final
paper before it ends. I am excited, curious and nervous at the same time when it
is time to check the grades but those feelings would be quickly altered by
disappointment. I got failing grades on all four papers but I thought this should
not affect my confidence. Before writing the final paper, I went through all those
four papers and looked where I went wrong. Keeping the corrections and
comments in mind, I wrote the final paper and I was very happy when I received
a passing grade.
From these writing classes, I realized that how we love or hate writing does not
determine our skills. There is always a room for improvement if we are bad at
something. We would receive negative feedbacks and failing grades sometimes
but we would also receive passing grades or medals other times. What is
important is we keep on learning and improving.
This is a very short sample of a reflection essay and you might have to write
something longer. Nonetheless, this reflection essay example shows what you
have to include in your essay namely introduction with thesis statement, body
that can be a description or narration, and a conclusion with your realization,
insight or judgment.
