CUSTODIAL OFFICER RECRUTIMENT INFORMATION

CENTRE INFORMATION

Borallon Correctional Centre is a high security Correctional Centre. Offenders in custody are
managed according to their assessed security classification and particular needs with the provision
of opportunities for them to develop increased levels of responsibility through engagement in
rehabilitation activities including education, work, vocational training, and programs designed to
address offending behaviour. Offenders are continually assessed and their risk levels and needs
adjusted accordingly as they work towards their graduated release.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Introduction Session
After the applications close, chosen applicants will be invited to attend an Introduction Session on
Saturday 29 May 2010 which will include a presentation on the Centre and the role of a Custodial
Officer, numeracy and literacy test, basic computer test, fitness test, application forms and a tour of
the Centre. This is the first stage of the process and non attendance will result in your application
being withdrawn. Please come dressed in joggers and exercise gear or there are facilities available
for you to change into suitable fitness attire if you wish.

Interview & Pre employment Fitness Assessments


After the Introduction Sessions, a select number of applicants will be invited to attend a second
interview. The interview is conducted by a panel of Borallon Managers.

Start Date
You will be notified at least two 2 weeks in advance of the start date if you have been successful.
The start date will be in late June / early July. Confirmation of employment during or after the Entry
Level Training Program is subject to a successful criminal history check, medical assessment and
successful completion of the Entry Level Training Program.

Criminal History Check


Criminal history checks will be undertaken through Queensland Corrective Services for all
preferred applicant(s). Applicants seeking employment with Serco are required to disclose any
criminal histories and/or charges (including convictions which are not recorded as per the
provisions of the Criminal Law (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act 1986, section 9A(1). A criminal
conviction or charge will not automatically exclude an applicant from consideration for appointment
with Serco. All personal information obtained in the application process will be treated
confidentially and held securely by the Human Resource Department.

Computer Literacy
It is important for Custodial Officers to be able to operate a computer efficiently to be able to make
case notes and use the internal database.

TRAINING COURSE INFORMATION

Entry Level Training


To become a fully qualified Custodial Officer you will first be required to successfully complete a
ten (10) week Entry Level Training Program (ELTP) prior to being employed. The entry level
course is made up of theory and practical training.

Certificate III in Correctional Practice


Following the successful completion of the ELTP you will be employed on a full time, part time or
casual basis (depending on your preference and operational needs). You will be required to
complete a Certificate III in Correctional Practice (offered by Queensland Corrective Services)
during your first year of employment.

The program for Certificate III in Corrective Services includes training in:
• Emergency Response
• Control & Restraint
• Chemical Agents
• First Aid/CPR
• Firearms

Ongoing Training
Specialist training in areas such as mandatory drug testing, intelligence or the Dog Squad may be
required from time to time. Serco is committed to providing comprehensive training, development
programs and giving people all that they need to fulfill their potential.
Senior First Aid Certificate
It is a requirement that all Custodial Officers have and maintain a current Senior First Aid
Certificate. For those successful applicants without this qualification assistance may be provided
to undertake the required training and certification.

CUSTODIAL OFFICER ROSTERS

Custodial Officers work 12 hour rotating shifts on a 6 to 12 week roster depending on company
needs, with an average of 38 hours worked per week.

CUSTODIAL OFFICER UNIFORMS

If you are successfully selected to become a Custodial Officer with Serco you will be provided with
a full uniform. A shoe allowance is included in your salary.

JOB CLASSIFICATION STRUCTURE & DEFINITIONS

Trainee Officer - means an employee who is attending the Entry Level Training Program.

Probationary Officer - means an employee who has completed appropriate Entry Level Training
Program and/or a bridging course and has acquired equivalent skills so as to enable the employee
to perform work within the scope of this level and is able to exercise the skills and knowledge
required of an employee at this level. The term of a Probationary Officer will not exceed six
months.

Custodial Officer Level 1 - means an employee who has successfully completed the probationary
period and is in the process of undertaking Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial)
(CSC30101), or equivalent. Such an employee continues training and retraining.

Custodial Officer Level 2 - means an employee who has attained a Certificate III in Correctional
Practice (Custodial) (CSC30101) or equivalent, and has a minimum of twelve months service as a
custodial officer. Such an employee continues training and retraining. The term of a Level 2 officer
will not exceed twelve months.

Custodial Officer Level 3 – means an employee at this level performs work above and beyond
the skills of an employee at Level 2 and to the level of their training and has a minimum of twelve
months service as a custodial officer Level 2.

Custodial Officer Level 4 - means an employee appointed as such who has completed a
Certificate IV in Correctional Practice (Custodial) (CSC40201) or equivalent, has a minimum of
twelve months service as a custodial officer Level 2, and has acquired equivalent skills as to
perform work within the scope of this level. An employee at this level performs work above and
beyond the skills of an employee at Level 3.
