for marginalized groups, the Facebook post and
several subsequent comments are inconsistent
with our mission and values. Pitzer Colleges

Pitzers community values of diversity, dialogue, inquiry and action to help us achieve this
mission. We come together to live and work in
a shared learning environment where every
member is valued, respected, and entitled to
dignity and honor. Our shared goal is to create
a balanced approach to engaging complex intercultural issues, not to isolate individuals on the
basis of any protected status.
Mr. Oliver also took a moment to weigh in on
the complications that can arise when personal
opinions go digital.
This is but another example to us that social
media is not an effective platform to engage in
complex dialog on seemingly intractable critical
issues that have varied histories and contested
understandings. They create more heat than light
and invite extreme viewpoints that intentionally
obfuscate the nuanced context that surrounds
these issues.
Mr. Oliver urged any students who feel they
need additional support on the matter to contact
the on-call therapist offered to students by Monsour Counseling or to reach out to a chaplain.
As we move forward in the academic year
ahead, I look forward to participating in these
discussions in the best tradition of Pitzer Col-
lege, he concluded.
In an email to the COURIER, Pitzer Colleges Vice President for Student Affairs Brian
Carlisle sought to remind people that the students whose views have been highlighted by the
story are just that, students.
Student Affairs at Pitzer continues our strong
commitment to the growth and development of
all students. We understand that during this
growth process our students are sometimes
prone to make imperfect decisions, he said.
Yet, our faith in and unwavering dedication to
the education process and its capacity to engage and transform students remain steadfast.

POLICE BLOTTER
Sunday, July 31
A resident on Mt. Carmel called police
around 10 p.m. to say four unfamiliar
cars were outside Higginbotham Park
and that the parks visitors were up to
no good. Police responded but no report
was taken.
Monday, August 1
A female driver was traveling on
Foothill Boulevard near Mountain Avenue at around 3:30 p.m. when a man
grew impatient with her rate of speed.
The male driver of a black-and-blue Ford
F150 truck followed closely behind the
woman, gestured and indicated that she
was driving too slow, at which point he
threw a soda can at her car. Police were
unable to locate the driver of the truck.
***
At around 6:30 p.m., an unnamed couple caught the attention of a homeowner
near Wheeler Park when they tied a hammock between two trees. As the hammock swayed to and fro, the resident
concluded the couple was fooling around.
Claremont officers visited the park but
determined that nothing lewd had occurred, according to Lt. Mike Ciszek.
The canoodlers were asked to remove the
hammock and they went on their way.
***
A fight erupted at College Park between three men and a woman at about
7:15 p.m. Officers responded and found
a group of people screaming and cursing at each other, according to police.
The officer was talking with them when
Pamela Gross, 55, identified herself to
A resident on Brown Drive called police just before 6 p.m. to report a disturbing noise coming from a neighbors
house. When police arrived, they found a
resident playing the bagpipes in his
home. Police issued a friendly reminder
to keep the noise down, but no report was
taken and no citation was given.
***
Across town, a resident on the 700
block of College Avenue near Seventh
Street called police at 12:45 a.m. to warn
officers that a male and female were
screaming and yelling at one another.
Concerned for their safety, police conducted a welfare check on the duo, only
to learn they were simply having a loud
political debate. Police did not comment
on how the argument started or how long
it will continue.
***
At 12:30 a.m. at the Knights Inn on
San Jose Avenue, officers saw Michael
Horton, 47, get into a gray 2013 Honda
Civic that had been reported stolen. As
he made his way to the street, police conducted a high-risk traffic stop and arrested Mr. Horton for grand theft auto,
being in possession of stolen property
and for a warrant on a previous crime.
At 3:50 a.m. on Cornell and First
Street, a witness called police to say a
man was attempting to run over a woman
with his car. The female victim had met
the suspecta black male in his 20s
earlier in the evening in the parking
garage on First Street. Lt. Ciszek said the
new friends then went to a home in San
Dimas to have some drinks. After several hours of partying, the woman asked
the man to drive her back to her car.
Once back in Claremont, the woman
claimed her purse had been stolen and refused to leave the mans car until he
called his friends back in San Dimas to
locate the handbag. He refused, grabbed
her by the arms and tried to physically
remove her from his car. She eventually
got out on her own but stood in front of
his moving car to stop him from leaving.
Thats when he inched forward and
tapped her with the bumper of the car.
She did not require medical treatment.
The suspect left before police arrived and
her pocketbook was not located.
Friday, August 5
A man walking east on Seventh Street
near Indian Hill caused a ruckus around
7 p.m. Christopher Marinko, 28, of La
Verne, was seen stumbling around and
had reportedly been in a fist fight earlier
near Mallows Park with an unknown individual. Police talked with Mr. Marinko
and determined he needed to sleep it off.
He was arrested for drunk and disorderly
conduct.
Sunday, August 7
Two males wearing black clothing
were roaming the Wilderness Park at
around 11:30 a.m. with BB guns. Police
were called by a vigilant resident and officers reminded the duo of the parks
rulesno hunting, trapping or harvesting living or dead things and possession
or use of firearms, air guns, bows and arrows, slingshots or other weapons is not
permitted. The sportsmen were released
without citations.

tendent Jim Elsasser in presiding over more than twodozen meetings with community stakeholders. Their aim
was to educate the community about CUSDs considerable facilities needs and to gather input on what kind of
school bond measure, if any, the community might support.
Ms. Shoemaker noted that district employees are not
allowed to campaign for the ballot measure during work
hours. They can, however, show support for a school
bond in their free time.
Ms. Shoemaker will likely attend evening meetings set
up by proponents of the bond measure to provide information about the financial side of the equation.
During school hours, district staff is allowed to engage
in education with respect to CUSDs facility needs. For
instance, district employees might schedule tours of the
facilities that stand to be repaired should the bond pass.
Theres an education piece, which is not the proponent
piece, Ms. Shoemaker said. Its about letting people see
the facilities so they understand the condition.
The projects that would be undertaken using bond
money include roofing at every school site except CHS,
which saw a major roofing upgrade last summer; an upgrade of the districts outdated HVAC systems and electrical upgrades with an eye on greater energy-efficiency;
and renovation of the pools at Claremont High School
and El Roblethe former of which has been unusable
and drained for a few years nowas well as the schools
locker rooms.
Further work that would be funded by bond money includes the replacement of portables throughout CUSD
with longer-lived modular buildings, upgrades to CHS
large gym and an overhaul of CHSs music building and
student center/food prep facility.
More information on the bond measure is available on
the CUSD website, cusd.claremont.edu.

more than happy to wear a maroon uniform and saddle shoes every day to Catholic school. The only kind
of shopping Ive ever really enjoyed is grocery shopping. I can see that eggplant, those breadcrumbs, that
mozzarella and sauce coming together to be something edible. I can never see an outfit coming together
in my head in any way other than a crime scene photo
of color, pattern and frightfully out-of-date or inappropriate choices.
But my daughter got the gene. It has been active in
her bloodstream since birth (aided greatly by a paternal grandmother who believed that all baby girls
should sport large hair bows and bejeweled overalls).
In fact, where other mothers could determine their
childrens progress by the typical developmental
measures like crawling, walking and cognitive play, I
had different milestones. For dexteritythe first time
she reached in her own hair, pulled out one of those gigantic bows and threw it to the flooror for name
recognitionthe first time she uttered two words together; she was speaking retail when she said Home
Depot. She recognized the sign from our many trips
there when we were living in a 1920s-built Dutch
colonial in much need of repair; she very quickly
graduated to knowing the names of stores where shoes
and dresses were accessible.
Shes a young lady now, but every time we go shopping together I am reminded of her laser-focus. While
Im standing in the clearance section considering an
oversized, floral-printed blouse that looks like it could
easily be repurposed as curtains in a tea shop, she is
amassing a pile of smart, chic pieces that she will pull
together effortlessly and wear in her distinctive way.
I base most of my clothing choices on two criteria:
will it itch? and does it have an elastic waist? But I can
take pride in having given birth to a child who once
won an academic award and was complimented by the
principal for her ability to navigate the walk across the
stage to accept said prize in perilously high heels (she
was in 8th grade, wearing the party shoes from her bat
mitzvah). Self-confidence is the smartest look, and she
wears it well.
n interfaith colleague
told me this story. A
few weeks ago, a
woman called the mosque on
north Garey Avenue. She had
heard that the mosque was
hosting refugees from Syria
and she wanted to make a donation.
The mosque has hosted several
refugee families from Syria and is expecting more in the near future. But at
the moment, the mosque does not have
an immediate need, so they contacted
the First Presbyterian Church in
Pomona, a congregation that is hosting
a Syrian family in mid-August.
Only when the minister visited the
woman to pick up her donation did he
learn that the generous donor was Jewish, a member of Temple Beth Israel referred by the Islamic Center of
Claremont to the Presbyterian Church.
Something new is happening. Interfaith connections like this are being
made with much greater frequency
today than they were even a year ago.
The Syrian refugee crisis is providing
an opportunity to strengthen these
growing inter-religious relationships in
our community.
Mahmoud (Mike) Tarifi, a member of
the Islamic Center of Claremont, is the
volunteer coordinator for much of the
Syrian refugee activity. From time to
time, he puts out the word to interfaith
colleagues and institutions, most often
for household furnishings when a new
family arrives. Furniture donations have
come from the Mormons on Base Line,
from the used furniture operation at Pilgrim Place on Mayflower Road and

The exhibit will feature works from
local artists, including longtime Claremont resident Jerry Owens.
Although Mr. Owens generally confines his painting to canvases, for this
event he created a large-scale two-dimensional mural. The mural was a
week-long project for the artist, whose
goal is to represent both the rural and

Mr. Owens mural contains two sides
of artwork, reflecting the citys rural and
urban aspects. The left side represents
the rurality in Claremont, and features a

For the urban side of the mural, Mr.
Owens embraced the beauty of Claremonts nature, having painted a yellow

Blood donations
urgently needed in the
final weeks of summer
The American Red Cross urges blood
donors to give in the final weeks of summer to help overcome a critical summer
blood shortage.
Blood donation events in Claremont
are scheduled for the next three WednesdaysAugust 14, 24 and 31from 1 to
7 p.m. at St Lukes Church, 2050 N. Indian Hill Blvd.
The summer months are among the
most challenging times of the year to collect enough blood and platelet donations
to meet patient needs. Many regular
donors delay giving while they take vacations and participate in summer activities. The need for blood doesnt take a
summer break, though.

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you
should understand that there are risks involved in bidding
at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on
the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear
ownership of the property. You should also be aware that
the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you
are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be
responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the
property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence,
priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on
this property by contacting the county recorders office
or a title insurance company, either of which may
charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same
lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust
on this property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE

less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time
of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt

shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more
times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court,
pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.

BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the

bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for
paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned
off, before you can receive clear title to the property.
You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on
this property by contacting the county recorder's office
or a title insurance company, either of which may charge
you a fee for this information. If you consult either of
these resources, you should be aware that the same
lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of
trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY
OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale
may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee,
beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g
of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made
available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those
not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your
