ELIDA A single-vehicle accident early Friday afternoon on Elida Road near

Redd Road claimed the life of an Elida teen.
A passenger in the pickup truck involved in the accident, Jakob Sexton, 15,
of Elida was pronounced dead at St. Ritas Medical Center following the crash
reported at 1:36 p.m.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a pickup truck driven by
Lawrence Slygh, 16, of Elida was westbound on Elida Road when the truck left
the roadway on the right side, struck a ditch, went airborne, struck a fence and a
tree and overturned.
All six occupants in the truck were all ejected; none were wearing seat belts.
Passengers Sexton, Drew Dulebohn, 15, of Elida; Jaden Boroff, 15, of Lima;
Jaxon Swickrath, 15, of Elida; and Alana Rankin, 16, of Lima; were all transported
to St. Ritas Medical Center for treatment.
According to a hospital spokesperson, six teenagers had been transported there
as a result of the crash. Two others were listed in critical condition and two others
were listed in stable condition. One patient who had been listed in stable condition
was released after treatment at about 7 p.m. Friday.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, which remains
under investigation.

OTTAWA Convicted of the

rape of his then-10-year old stepdaughter, Trenton Lauf, 38, Ottoville,
was sentenced to a prison term of
33 years to life on Thursday. Judge
Randall Basinger delivered the sentence in Putnam County Common
Pleas Court, imposing an 8-year term
on a charge of the illegal use of a
minor in nudity and 25 years to life
in prison on the rape charge, the two
sentences to run consecutively.
Lauf was grinning as he was
led into the courtroom by sheriffs
deputies but his demeanor quickly changed when Assistant County
Prosecutor Todd Schroeder addressed
the court.

Kids breakfast ends soon

St. Peter Lutheran Church is approaching the end
of its breakfast program. The program, which
provides free breakfast to children in the Delphos
area, will end Aug. 26, just before school starts
up. This year, the event has been seeing consistent
numbers of around 30 kids per day. According to
Todd Stemen, a worker at the program, some days
the breakfast can have as many as 50 kids. Stemen
said the kids enjoy interacting with each other and

TOWNSHIP A Delphos
teen remains in serious condition following an ATV crash
Tuesday evening.
Kaitlin E. Pohlman, 16, of
Delphos was life-flighted to
Parkview Regional Medical
Center in Fort Wayne after
the crash on Bockey Road.
The Van Wert Post of the
Ohio State Highway Patrol
reports indicate that a 1999
Honda ATV (4-wheeler)
operated by Pohlman was
traveling southbound on
Bockey Road just north of
Carpenter Road in Van Wert
County and failed to maintain

control and went off the left
side of the roadway. Pohlman
and her passenger, Tristine F.
Lehmkuhle, 16, of Delphos,
were both ejected from the
ATV.
Lehmkuhle did not sustain
any injuries.
Neither occupant was
wearing a helmet or any type
of safety equipment. Alcohol
is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. The crash
remains under investigation.
The Van Wert Post was
assisted by the Van Wert
County Sheriffs Office,
Middle Point Fire and EMS,
Samaritan Life-Flight and
Parker Mace Towing.
POLICE REPORTS
DELPHOS On Aug. 4, officers met with a male whose
vehicle was damaged on South Canal Street. The male told
officers that his vehicle bottomed out on the railroad tracks
causing moderate damage.
On Aug. 4, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of
South Main Street in reference to an unknown problem with
the occupant of a vehicle. Officers arrived and found a male
who appeared to be unresponsive. Officers were able to awaken the male and began speaking with him. During the investigation of this incident, officers found multiple items of drug
paraphernalia as well as suspected marijuana and suspected
heroin. At this time, charges are pending in Lima Municipal
Court.
On Aug. 4, officers met with a female at the police department who wished to file a report. The female told officers that
her brother was sending her unwanted text messages and phone
calls that were harassing in nature. The male was contacted by
officers and advised to cease all contact with his sister.
On Aug. 4, officers met with a male at the police department
who reported a theft incident. The male told officers that while
he was away, someone had taken money from his residence.
The male gave officers the name of a suspect who had been in
the residence. The incident remains under investigation.
On Aug. 5, officers were sent to the 600 block of Suthoff
Street to meet with a complainant. Upon arrival, the male told
officers that he found an unauthorized charge on his debit card.
A report was written and forwarded to the Detective Bureau for
further investigation.
On Aug. 5, an officer on patrol observed the driver of
a vehicle, Andrew Grandstaff of Wapakoneta, operating a
vehicle on Carolyn Drive. The officer had knowledge that
Grandstaffs driving privileges were suspended and initiated a
traffic stop. Grandstaff was issued a citation for FRA non-compliance suspension and will appear in Lima Municipal Court
to face the charge.
On Aug. 5, officers responded to the 800 block of South
Bredeick Street in reference to a female threatening to harm
herself. Officers arrived and met with the female. EMS was
contacted and transported the female to the hospital for treatment.
On Aug. 5, a female came to the police department to report
a threatening message she had received. The female told officers that a male known to her had sent her the message. The
male was contacted and advised to cease contact with the
complainant.
On Aug. 5, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of East
Third Street to look for a juvenile female who had left the residence without permission. Officers located the female a short
time later and returned her to the residence.
On Aug. 6, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of
West Fourth Street after receiving a complaint of a dog bite.
Officers met with the male victim a short time later. He stated
that he was bitten by the dog as he walked in the 300 block of
North Jefferson Street. Officers located the dogs owner and
advised her of the complaint. The report was forwarded to the
Van Wert County Dog Wardens Office for further investigation.

(Bame) Ries, 75, of Delphos
passed away on Wednesday at
St. Ritas Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 3, 1940,
to Orville Rick Bame Jr. and
Garnet (Snyder Bame) Ricker,
who preceded her in death.
She is survived by one
daughter, Amy L. (Paul
King) Truesdale-Simons of
Rockford, Michigan; one
brother, Lawrence (Kathleen)
Bame; four grandchildren,
Valerie Slisz, Kimberly
Slisz, Kylie Truesdale and
Emily King; a step-granddaughter, Bonnie King; four
great-grandchildren, Aidan,
Liam, Emry and Temperance;
and five nieces and nephews,
Alicia, Yancy, Tracy, Andrew
and John. She is also survived
by a very special adopted granddaughter, Emily
Buettner.
She was also preceded in
death by a son, Jon Kevin
Truesdale.
Sue Ann was a lifelong
member of St. Paul United
Methodist Church. As a history buff, she enjoyed volunteering at the Delphos
Canal Museum. She was a
frequent and expert shopper,
enjoyed the Lima Symphony
and traveling, as she visited
Europe, Northern Africa and
most of North America. Sue
Ann loved all forms of art,
including the ballet, opera and
the works of Dale Chihuly.
Most of all, she loved her
daily lunch or supper out with
her friends. She had worked
for the State of Indiana in
the appellate court system for
over 20 years. She was also
a 1958 graduate of Delphos
Jefferson high school.
Funeral services will
begin at 11 a.m. on Monday
at Harter and Schier Funeral
Home, the Revs. Rick Lamb
and David Howell officiating.
Burial will follow in Walnut
Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2-4

DELPHOS Edgar Van

Autreve, 95, of Delphos
passed away on Thursday at
St. Ritas Medical Center.
He was born on Aug. 12,
1921, in Savage, Montana,
to Antoine and Gabrielle Van
Autreve, who preceded him
in death. He was united in
marriage to Augusta Fuerst
in 1946. They had celebrated
their 70th wedding anniversary on June 1. She survives in
Delphos.
He is also survived by three children, Mike (Patti) Van
Autreve of Dayton and Toni Van Autreve and Tom (Cyndy)
Van Autreve of Atlanta, Georgia; six grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Leon Van
Autreve; and a sister, Mary Keipper.
Edgar graduated from Delphos Jefferson High School in
1939 and he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of
19. He served four years as a marine during World War II and
fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima and was always very proud of
being a marine. After returning from serving our country and
marrying the love of his life, Edgar became an award-winning
North American moving agent as well as the proud owner
of the Busy Bee Rental and Hardware. Edgar was an active
member of the Kiwanis Club, VFW Post 3035 and Knights
of Columbus #1362, 4th degree, Sir Knight for 51 years. He
was a true family man and took pride and pleasure in spending
time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday
at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Dennis
Walsh officiating. Burial will follow in St. Johns Cemetery,
with military grave rites by the Delphos Veterans Council.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at Harter and
Schier Funeral Home, where a parish wake will be held at
7:30 p.m.

Virginia Stockwell
Oct. 21, 1917-Aug. 12, 2016
DELPHOS Virginia Stockwell, 98, of Delphos passed
away on Friday at Vancrest Healthcare Center in Delphos.
She was born Oct. 21, 1917, in Luckey to George and
Minnie (Thompson) Rife, who preceded her in death. She was
united in marriage to James Stockwell in 1935; he preceded
her in death in June 1978.
She is survived by two sons, Jim (Jeannette) Stockwell
of Delphos and Jeff (Connie) Stockwell of Cairo, Georgia;
a brother, George (Sue) Rife of Lexington, Kentucky; sisterin-law, Marilyn Rife; grandchildren, Kim (Derek) Shivley,
Mark (Rachel Swartz) Stockwell, Lisa (Kirk) Looser, Jeff
(Julane) Stockwell, Maria Stockwell, Dennis Stockwell, Jason
Stockwell and Rachelle Stockwell; 15 great-grandchildren;
and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Jerry Stockwell;
infant son, George Stockwell; three brothers, Dale, Earl and
Keith Rife; a sister, Vivian Phillips; a granddaughter, Donna
Garza; and a great-grandson, Collin James Stockwell.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and had retired
from Huddle Restaurant, where she worked as a waitress for
30 years. She loved to travel and read.
There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Wednesday
at Walnut Grove Cemetery, the Rev. David Howell officiating.

Gifts of thought from the over 60 crowd...

A Visit with Don Fair 89Wise

Born in 1927, Don Fair, World War II veteran, grew up
in Delphos, graduating from Delphos Jefferson High School
in 1945. Don tells of his mother receiving his diploma in
the mail as he intentionally enlisted for military service on
Valentines Day 1945. This timeliness would enable him to
join his branch of choice, the US Navy. Don would serve the
Navy 5 1/2 years with the bulk of his time in the South Pacific
(Philippines, Japanese Occupation, invasion staging and lastly
in China). He returned home in 1950 after his last stop of duty
in Newport, Rhode Island.
In 1952 Don would meet (at The Rustic) his future wife,
Betty (Bolen 2012), and they married in 1953. Don recalled
with deep gratitude their marriage of 59 years and the blessing
of their two children, Donette and Greg.
Happy Days on Clime Street:
Don reflected on his comeuppance days on Clime Street
in Marbletown, Delphos. His uncle (Louis) owned the Fair
Store on Clime. It was a grocery of notable traffic in the 1920s
and 30s, second only to Kroger and A&P. After World War II,
Harold Fair would convert the grocery into Harolds Bar, a
gathering place alive and well today on Clime.
In his teens, Don worked at a mom and pop grocery,
Strayers Grocery, also on Clime near Bredeick Street. He
spoke of the great influence of Russell Shorty Strayer (a
cousin) on him in his youth. Attending both Lincoln (Suthoff)
and Garfield (South Clay) primary schools, Don recalled (age
7 or 8) his uncle Louis, during Prohibition, selling supplies,
along with many others, for making whisky (mash & such).
He said there was a Louis Fair, The Bottle King, sort of logo
painted on the side of his establishment there. Don shared that
in those days, everyone knew that the sound of the bell from
Fairs place (Clime & Bredeick) was Fair warning that the
federal men were in town.
Days of the Delphos Rail Post Office:
Don reminded of the critical role the railroad played in mail
transport in the 50s and 60s. There was a rail post office route
that ran from Delphos to Akron.
(AK-DEL-RPO) It was operated on the Akron-Canton &
Youngstown Railroad, AC&Y. Don shared the train method
for mail pick-up and delivery: Simultaneously, an apparatus
atop the train would grab, from a hook, the outgoing mail from
Delphos while an actual drop/throw was made to a receiver
area of the delivery mail. (All at 60MPH mind you) Don said
the Delphos receiver area (a box-shaped area of railroad ties)
had a target tolerance of some 20 feet from the canal and try as
they did, there was an occasional wet mail delivery.
Dons Rail Post Office Days:
Dons experience as a military mail clerk would soon
find him embarking on a 38-year career with the US Postal
Service. The bulk of his early mail career involved working in Cleveland (Hopkins Airfield), many years with the
Pittsburgh & Chicago rail post office, and eventually working
his way back to Lima where he served as a Customer Service
Representative, worked on special assignments including
audit teams, all in the 458 territory. Don has made great contribution (rail post office artifacts, mail train scheduling, know
how, etc) to the Transportation Wing (a simulated rail post
office car) of the Delphos Postal Museum. You can treat yourself to an interesting flashback in time at the museum. Don
retired from the Postal Service in 1988 and then spent some
seven years working part time for the Met Bank in Lima (Bank
One). From 1995 to present, he has been enjoying senior life

Honor Flight:
Recently Don was honored (June 2016) by the experience
of a military Honor Flight and State Patrol motorcycle
escort into Washington, D.C. Accompanied by his son, Greg,
they visited all of the war memorials. Don spoke of the emotion (seeing the Navy guys) and being so thankful and humbled by the experience. He continued, it was first-class all the
way and the respect shown to all the Veterans was just great.
He was especially thankful that his son, Greg, was witness to
the many stories shared by other veterans.
A few of Dons favorites:
Color: Green, its the color of money.
Food: Prime Rib, baked potato and salad, rhubarb pie, also
partial to Chinese food.
Music: Big Bands, My wife and I would dance and our
song was At Last by Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra is my
favorite, saw him twice in concert.
Car: 1950 Studebaker, green, manual, recalled taking his
daughter Donette for her drivers test with the vacuum-driven

Championship Game (when the Browns ruled the roost in
the 50s) and The Toe Lou Groza kicking the game-winning
field goal for a 30-28 World Champion win on Dec. 24, 1950.
Favorite president: Harry Truman. Don recalled the staging for a potential invasion of Japan and Trumans decision to
end the war (Aug. 6 and 9, 1945), which saved many lives on
both sides. He admired the man, his standing tall in the most
difficult of times. Don summed it up with the buck stops
here.

Advice to Young People: Listen to the stories of the older
people, there is wisdom to be gained. Wise indeed.
If I had a magic wand and could fix one thing in this
world, Id Peace, understanding, respect. I may not agree

to say it, as long as its not six inches from my nose.
Beyond the meat and potatoes of our conversation, I picked
up a bonus tid-bit of Delphos information from Don: at one
time there were slot machines in the Capitol Theater on Main
Street maybe you remember.
Its never a gamble having a sit-down with someone
Seniorwise. I completely enjoyed mine with World War II
veteran Don Fair. Don remains steadfast in his optimism
regarding our countrys future saying, I think this country
has weathered a lot of things and well weather from where
we are now.
Don closed our conversation quoting Mark Twain: The
worst thing that could ever happen to me in life never did.

DELPHOS Recently, the Catholic Ladies of Columbia
(CLC) made a generous donation to St. John the Evangelist in
Delphos for the development of Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP).
CRHP is an individual and parish spiritual renewal process.
Since 1969, CRHP has impacted over 1,400 parishes throughout
the United States. This program opens the individuals to experience
a time to relax, pray, and rethink priorities, as well as grow to know
one another and grow as a community. It is a weekend of renewal
to examine ones own personal relationship with Christ and share
spiritual and life issues with each other.
Several ladies of St. John the Evangelist Parish recently participated on a CRHP weekend in Fort Jennings. After the weekend, a
team of ladies elected to join together to bring the program to our
community here in Delphos. This team has been diligently working
through weekly meetings and are incredibly inspired to see this
program come to fruition.
Janet Siefker and Velma Wehri, members and agents of CLC,
donated two checks to the CRHP spiritual director, Fr. Dennis
Walsh. This $700 donation will be helpful in the formation of the
CRHP program here in Delphos.
The community of St. John the Evangelist would like to thank

As your cake bakes, you can stir-up this delicious
chili.
Quick Cincinnati Chili
1 pound ground beef
1 (1-1/4 ounce) package mild chili seasoning mix
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
4 cups cooked spaghetti, (8 ounces dry)
Shredded cheddar cheese, for garnish
Chopped onion, for garnish
Cook ground beef in large saucepan until no longer
pink; drain. Add chili seasoning, cinnamon, beans
and tomato sauce. Add water to bring to correct consistency. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 10
minutes. Serve over spaghetti, topped with cheddar
and onions.
Pumpkin Spice Cake
1 package spice cake mix
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup salad oil
1 small package vanilla instant pudding
3 eggs
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup water
Mix ingredients. Pour into greased and floured
Bundt pan. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Let sit in
pan 15 minutes before removing.

with whipped topping and
topped with nuts. It can be
served right out of the pan as
a cake. Other cooks started
making the angel food cakes,
all made from scratch. Some
of the egg whites that Lovina
had frozen ahead of time for
the wedding werent stiffening up, so someone was sent
to Susans (who is a baker)
house down the street to get
the jar she had in her refrig-
erator.
Next came baking pecan
pies. By now, the wedding
wagon was very warm, with
seven ovens and cooktops
going! Other pie shells were
baked to be used to make
fresh strawberry pie, which
is Susans favorite. Other
cooks cleaned, chopped
and bagged celery, carrots
and onions to be used in
the dressing. Some cooked,
deboned and shredded chicken to be used in the stuffing
and noodles.
Spider mites can affect corn, too

With continued dry weather, the pest weve
been getting the most calls about is the spider
mite. This is just a reminder that vigilant
scouting for this pest is a good idea right now.
It is also important to re-scout 5 days after
treatment because many products will not kill
the eggs, and populations can resurge. Any
follow-up treatment should be made with a
product with a different mode of action to
reduce resistance development (so, for example, if you used something with bifenthrin the
first time, you might switch to Lorsban the
second time, or vice versa). This link will take

There are two miticides that are newly
labeled for spider mite management in soybean and/or some types of corn: Agri-Mek
from Sygenta and Zeal from Valent. We at
OSU have not tested these products yet, but
are currently running trials with both of them
in northwestern Ohio. Thanks to all of our
readers who helped identify suitable locations!
Normally we only worry about spider
mites in soybean, but when conditions are just
wrong they can impact corn as well. Corn that
has been treated with some fungicides and
insecticides (particularly a broad-spectrum
pyrethroid) are more likely to experience spider mite outbreaks under hot, dry conditions.
A general guide for treatment of two-spotted
spider mites in corn is 15-20% of leaf area
covered in mite colonies, with continued dry
weather expected. Control is most likely to
be economical from pre-tassel through soft
dough, and unlikely to provide a return from
dent onward. An excellent field crop entomologist Chris DiFonzo at Michigan State has
put together a nice table listing spider mite
products for corn, soybean, dry bean, and
sugarbeet. Always check your labels!

Thomison. Weather forecasters are calling
for continued above average temperatures
in August, especially higher night time temperatures. Past studies show that night time
temperatures affect yield potential. High night
temperatures (in the 70s or 80s degrees F) can
result in wasteful respiration and a lower net
amount of dry matter accumulation in plants.
The rate of respiration of plants increases

rapidly as the temperature increases, approximately doubling for each 13 degree F increase.
With high night temperatures more of the
sugars produced by photosynthesis during the
day are lost; less is available to fill developing kernels, thereby lowering potential grain
yield. High night time temperatures result
in faster heat unit (GDD) accumulation that
can lead to earlier corn maturation, whereas
cool night temperatures result in slower GDD
accumulation that can lengthen grain filling
and promote greater dry matter accumulation
and grain yields.
Research at the University of Illinois conducted back in the 1960s indicated that corn
grown at night temperatures in the mid-60s
(degrees F) out yielded corn grown at temperatures in the mid-80s (degrees F). Low
night temperatures during grain fill (which
typically occurs in July and August) have
been associated with some of our highest corn
yields in Ohio. The cool night temperatures
may have reduced respiration losses during
grain fill and lengthened the rain fill period.
Cooler than average night temperatures can
also mitigate water stress and slow the development of foliar diseases and insect problems.

Test results are for 72 soft red winter
wheat varieties grown at five Ohio locations (Wood, Crawford, Wayne, Darke, and
Pickaway County). Variety selection should
be based on disease resistance, average yield
across test sites and years, winter hardiness,
test weight, and standability. Overall, grain
test weight averaged 58.4 lb/bu (compared to
an average test weight of 56.3 lb/bu in 2015).
Grain yield averaged between 97 and 119 bu/
acre at the five locations.

have been in full swing all
week for Susan and Moses
wedding this Friday. Last
Saturday, the wedding wagons were delivered: a cook
wagon, a refrigerated wagon
and a supply wagon holding
all the serving dishes, plates
and silverware.
Family members and
friends pitched in to get the
tables set up in the shed or
pole barn. Susan has chosen green for her wedding
color, so cooks, table waiters,
attendants, coffee servers,
family members and anyone
else helping will be wearing
hunter green, sage, mint, or
grass green shades.
The cooks began arriving very early Wednesday
morning. By 7 a.m., the cook
wagon was filled with women
At mid-morning, all the

women stopped for a coffee break with cookies and
bars that the women had
brought to share. Family
members and friends who
dont live close by used
this opportunity to catch up
on news from back home.
Neighbors chatted about
their families, new recipes and local news. Some
of the cooks are young
mothers and brought their
young children with them.
The older children seem
to enjoy watching over the
babies as their moms work.
Next, Lovinas sisters
began the time-consuming
job of making Nothings,
which are a traditional wedding treat from their home
town of Berne, Indiana.

DELPHOS For football coaches, scrimmages are the first chance to see their troops
against live competition after spending their
pre-season camps pounding on their teammates.
For Jefferson head coach Chris Sommers,
his teams first tune-up versus Bath Friday
night at Stadium Park was pretty successful.
You always want to see your players play
with great effort and enthusiasm in their first
live action and our guys did that. I liked how
we played hard throughout the scrimmage,
Sommers said.
We saw some mistakes which you
expect for your first live action but I saw
those same guys that made mistakes come
back and get better as the action wore on.
Bath head coach Bill Garland saw improvement between his teams first scrimmage and
Friday night.
Things didnt go as planned that night,
so we had marked improvement.We didnt
make as many mistakes, he explained. Our
quarterback improvement as we went on,
including throwing some nice deep balls; we
want to use that more this year.
We have some experience up front on both

sides but we have a lot of holes to fill, so we
are a work in progress.
Each offense had one series of 10 plays,
with Jefferson having a 57-yard scoring toss
from Jace Stockwell to Drew Reiss nullified.
In the first-and-10 segment, Jefferson
scored on a 20-yard Hunter Binkley run on
their second series and on a 31-yarder from
Stockwell to Reiss on their fourth series.
Bath got its touchdown on a 33-yard scoring pass.
In the situational segment first-and-10
from the opponents 20 Bath had a 20-yard
scoring toss negated, while Jefferson got a
9-yard Brenen Auer run.
In the junior varsity portion, Bath scored
on a 70-yard run on its second series, while
Jefferson reached the Bath 7 on its second try.

Hoehn returns handful of lettermen for Jennings

Hoehn has coached 19 years for the
Fort Jennings golf program.
He has a handful of returning
lettermen that he hopes will make
solid gains in the Putnam County
League race and in the Division III

post-season.
Back for another go-round are
senior Sam Vetter, senior Austin
Luebrecht, senior Logan Hardeman,
senior Griffin Morman and classmate Connor Stechschulte.
With only the graduated Alex
Sealts to replace from last fall as a
letterman, Hoehn will turn to anoth-
er handful-plus of promising newcomers off of last years junior varsity team: Will Calvelage, Jordan
Neidert, Luke Trentman, Brandon
Wehri, Reese Von Sossan and Ryan
Hoersten.
Our increased number of participants will make competition for
varsity sports very interesting and
challenging. Returning lettermen
are experienced with the golf season

and will hopefully push the team
to get better, Hoehn said. Were
looking for players to consistently
shoot good scores and just play a
consistent game overall.
We should be competitive
throughout the season, especially
with the numbers of players we
have that will be fighting for varsity

The 2014 walleye hatch in Lake
Erie was great, so there have been
some good catches in western Lake
Erie this year! The minimum size is
set at 15 inches to ensure sustainability of Lake Erie walleye for years to
come and Wildlife Officers regularly
check fisherman for regulation compliance.
The perch bite has also been good
on western Lake Erie and Wildlife
Officers have been checking fisherman for compliance with the bag limits to protect the resource. Remember
- bag limits are set to ensure the sustainability of Ohios fish resources
and the perch bag limit is 30 fish per
person per day. Thank you to all the
great ethical anglers out there!
There is one wildlife officer
assigned to each of Ohios 88 counties and they work hard to help
protect Ohios wildlife. Some days,
a wildlife officer might be patrolling
an area to keep a lookout for poachers. Another day might entail teaching youngsters about the diversity
of mammals in Ohio. A common
responsibility with which many of
us are familiar is enforcing laws,
making sure everyone is properly
licensed and contributing their fair
share to wildlife conservation efforts.

2016 Ohio Sport Fish Health
and Consumption Advisory
The Ohio Department of Health

advises everyone limit consumption
of sport fish caught from all waterbodies in Ohio to one meal per week,
unless there is a more or less restrictive advisory.
FISH IS GOOD FOR YOU!
Eat fish low in contaminants.
Fish are generally low in fat and
high in protein. Fish contain a number of vitamins and minerals and are
the primary food source for longchain omega-3 fatty acids. Studies
suggest that omega-3 fatty acids are
important during fetal brain and eye
development and may help to prevent
heart disease in adults.
Fish consumption advisories are
subject to change based on new data.

In general, use the following
table to guide your fish consumption
choices:

The statewide mercury advisory
is primarily for women of child-bearing age and children age 15 and
under. They are advised to eat no
more than one meal per week of fish
(any species) from any Ohio water
body unless there is a more or less
restrictive advisory..
The United States Environmental
Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and
the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) jointly issued a national
mercury-related advisory for storebought fish and fish served in restaurants. This advice is for women of
child-bearing age and young children. This advice states:
Do not eat Shark, Swordfish,
King Mackerel, or Tilefish because
they contain high levels of mercury.
Eat up to 12 ounces (two average
meals) a week of a variety of fish and
shellfish that are lower in mercury.
Five of the most commonly eaten
fish that are low in mercury are
shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon,
pollock and catfish.
Another commonly eaten fish,
albacore (white) tuna has more
mercury than canned light tuna. So,
when choosing your two meals of
fish and shellfish, you may eat up
to six ounces (one average meal) of
albacore tuna per week.
Check local advisories about the
safety of fish caught by family and
friends in your local lakes, rivers and
coastal areas. If no advice is available, you may eat up to six ounces
(one average meal) per week of fish
you catch from local waters, but
dont consume any other fish during
that week.

My husband and I often watch
TV Land because there just isnt
that much on TV really. We used
to watch All in the Family.
Archie Bunker was such a mean,
bigoted, couldnt-tell-him-anything
butt head I just wanted to shake
him. He was the king of his
castle and everyone else his subjects. He treated his wife like crap,
his daughter like crap, and everyone else, well, you guessed it, like
crap. On the other hand, he was
hard-working and a good provider.
All he wanted at the end of the day
was to sit in his chair, read the paper
and smoke a cigar after dinner. Was
that so much to ask?
I loved Caroll OConnor and
the roles he played. He was a great
actor and whether you loved him or
hated him, you were still watching
him. He got you.
When my dad was battling his
cancer, one of his treatments or
something changed the color of
his eyes. Before, they were always
hazel. Not green, hazel. There is a
difference. People with hazel eyes
have the ability to change their
eye color depending on mood and
sometimes the clothes they are
wearing.
After one of his treatments I
noticed his eyes were no longer
hazel. They were a brilliant blue.

Many of us commented on the
change but none of us ever asked a
doctor what might have caused it. It
was just one of those things. There
we so many changes in those last
several months.
My dad has been gone for a long
18 years or 18 short years; depends
on how you look at it.
Sometimes it seems like yesterday and at times, I feel he has
missed so much and I miss him
desperately.
Well, back on track. When my
dads eyes changed color, they
reminded me of Carroll OConnors
eyes. When the camera would focus
on his face, you couldnt help but
zoom in on those eyes.
My dad was a huge fan of In the
Heat of the Night with OConnor
in the lead role. I can remember
my now-husband begging me not to
make him sit in the living room with
my dad because that show always
on the TV and he hated it just as
much as my dad liked it.
After my father passed away, I
would watch every episode of All
in the Family I could find because
it made me feel closer to him. I
would look into OConnors eyes
and see my fathers.
All in the Family touched on
so many hot topics for the day.

My father was just the opposite of
Archie Bunker. He judged people
by their words and actions, not how
they looked or who they voted for
and what their last name was. I was
very lucky to have such a man for
a father.
In one episode of the later years
Archie Bunkers Place, Archie
and his son-in-law, Michael or
Meathead as Archie liked to call
him were trapped in the beer
cooler for the weekend until either
Archies partner, Murray, or the
beer guy came in on Monday. While
they talked, Archie shared a memory from his childhood. His father
had locked him in a closet and left
him there as a punishment.
Michael gets a glimpse of what
has made his father-in-law what he
was and shaped the way he looked
at the world.
There are a lot of people like
that. We cock our heads and wonder
what the heck. How did that person
get so mean? Why do they treat people that way?
Perhaps if we were just a little
more patient and listened, we might
find out. Then, we might be able to
help. Sometimes it just takes a little
effort to make a big difference.

Personal computers can

be a lovely thing, if only for
those Command Z and Undo
options. There are moments
when we dream of Undo outside of the e-world.
Human lives are so interwoven with pixels, networks and
electronic friendships that when
not ifthat chain is threatened,
we panic. And there are predators who count on it. Weve all
encountered them by phone and
been warned to hang up. A red
flag also exists in The Cloud.
But thieves can be devious. If
someone wants to get into your

home, your car, your device to
make a little or a whole lot of
cash, they are going to try. If they succeed, they also get into your
head.
Sometimes its satisfying to crawl into theirs, even just a little bit.
On Saturday, a dear one clicked on a pop-up, a little box that
declared something was diabolically wrong with their laptop. One
click later, the entire box was locked and a service number appeared
on the screen. At the other end of that number, Tony offered to
take care of the problemfor $249.90. After taking the bait, my
friend became suspicious, shut everything down and called the
credit card company. Tony wasnt happy, but my friend felt much
better.
My Steven, however, was inspired. He gave Tony a call from a
data-less phone. Paul answered. At first Steve was irate, asking
Paul who and where he was and how he could reach around the
world and hurt people. Eventually, Paul broke the connection. Steve
called him back. He called Paul back so many times that I lost
count, redialing as we walked through a grocery store, sat in the car
and his moms kitchen. My favorite call went something like this:
Is Paul there? Great, this is BobBob Millerfrom corporate. Yeah, the corporate office? Jim wanted me to call and get the
numbers.
Pause.
You know, the numbers for the week. What do you mean, you
dont understand? You know Paul, you and I are on a level here, but
Jim? Hes the boss. You know, the supervisor.
Click. Redial.
Hey, Paul? I dont know what happened there, but we got disconnected or something. You got those numbers for Jim?
On Sunday, Steve explained to Paul/Tony that he was more than
happy to call on occasion, if only to tie up a line to prevent Tony/
Paul and their ilk from hurting even one more person.
Works for me. If you hear from Paul/Tony, tell him Bob says
hi.
The key is to recognize opportunity

Whatever at the moment seems an insurmountable barrier to the achievement of
our fondest dreams may prove a blessing,
according to an issue of American Salesman.
Apparent handicaps often provide the stimulus we need to make our dreams come true;
and sometimes they force us into bypaths that
lead to far greater accomplishments.
A study on job instruction showed relationships of a learners ability to retain information: 10 percent of what she reads; 20 percent of what she hears; 30 percent of what she
sees; 50 percent of what she sees and hears;
70 percent of what she talks; and 90 percent
of what she says as she does a function.
Im reminded of a story I found in April
1986 titled: A Legend. I love stories like
this one. Are you the type of person to recognize opportunities?
One night in ancient times, three horsemen
were riding across the desert. As they crossed
the dry bed of a river, out of the darkness a
voice called, Halt!
They obeyed. The voice then told them to
dismount, pick up a handful of pebbles, put
them in their pockets and remount. The voice
then said, You have done as I commanded.
Tomorrow at sun-up you will be both glad
and sorry.
Mystified, the horsemen rode on. When
the sun rose, they reached into their pockets
and found that a miracle had happened. The

pebbles had been transformed into diamonds,
rubies and other precious stones.
They remembered the warning. They were
both glad and sorry-glad they had taken
some, and sorry they had not taken more.

Anyone over the age of 40 would never
have believed savers would have such horrible prospects for their investment portfolios.
Previous to 1995, certificate of deposits and
money market accounts were important parts
of any balanced financial plan.
If you are over 40, you probably are familiar with the Rule of 72. That rule says if you
can save $100 at 10 percent, your money will
double in seven years. Or, if you get seven
percent, your money will double in 10 years.
A CD was a safe, low-risk investment in your
future.
A recent Wall Street Journal article spelled
out just how bad todays paltry interest rates
are for savers. A report by Bank of America
Merrill Lynch tells us about one-year U.S.
deposit rates for certificate of deposits.
The current rate is 0.65 percent on a 1-year
CD. At that rate, it would take 107 years
for bank customers to double their money,
assuming rates stayed at that rate for that
long.

Putnam County needs Tony Wobler for Commissioner in

November. Wobler is more than qualified for making the hard
decisions. Wobler believes being honest and working hard; shows
others the right thing to do. Wobler brings an ability to communicate, to organize, to manage, and unite others. Wobler will always
follow up on processes to assure issues are performed accurately.
As a Republican, I cannot with good faith vote for Republican
Candidate Mike Lammers for county commissioner. My reasons
include Mike Lammerss confrontational escapades during 2015
and 2016 Putnam County Fairs. Lammers was constantly confronting people who were wearing Tony Wobler shirts and especially
people he knew were voting for Tony Wobler, plus bothering people
who did not want to talk to him; and most of all, Lammers involvement being on the 6119 board and helping draw up the by-laws
An indication of how Lammers presents himself is like a grizzly
bear on the attack. Lammers attitude was evident at the regional
6119 meeting in Miller City; shouting out to a Kalida trustee; then
preceded to tell Lammers plan, which is to form a property owners
committee, purchase property, drill wells and supply better water
to people.
We must not forget Mike Lammers helped set up the 6119 agenda and their by-laws.
It sure does sound like Lammers wants to control peoples water.
Why, and at what cost?
And last but not least, I will be voting for Donald Trump. He
is what America needs. We must not ever vote for Hillary. Never
forget Benghazi.

Im sure weve all got friends who march
to a different drummer, and sometimes they
worry us. They tend to over think everyday
situations that our otherwise sane friends
dont give a second thought to.
Arnie DeLuca of Wheaton, IL says he has
lunch with a friend several times a week and
the guy always has a comment that leaves
him speechless. I dont know where these
thoughts come from, DeLuca said. But after
a few awkward moments we change the subject and move on. Here are a few examples

again today. Im pretty sure shes going to get

8. I cant understand why women are okay
that JC Penney has an older womens clothing
line named, Sag Harbor.
One day my friend theorized that the
reason Mayberry was so peaceful and quiet
was because nobody was married, DeLuca
said. Okay, lets see. There was Andy, Barney,
Floyd, Aunt Bea, Howard, Goober, Gomer,
Sam, Earnest T Bass, Helen, Thelma Lou,
Clara, and of course, Opie-all single. The
only married person in Mayberry was Otis,
and he stayed drunk.
Congress should get back to work to combat Zika

It has been more than 165 days since
President Obama requested emergency
funding to fight Zika. Yet unlike in previous public health crises, Congress has
failed to rise to the occasion.
As experts warned of more cases on
the way, Congress shamefully packed
up and left for the summer without
taking action on emergency funding to
combat the expanding Zika threat.
There is no excuse for inaction. In
the past, Congress has come together
to quickly and effectively tackle public
health threats as they arise. Take Ebola,
H1N1, and Avian flu it took Congress
a combined 137 days to approve funding for all three of those health threats.
And yet, while the Senate overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan emergency funding bill in July, our bill failed
in the House of Representatives because
some members decided to play politics
with public health and used the bill to
push special-interest priorities. None

of our states is immune from this crisis
and it isnt right that these members
couldnt set politics aside to protect
Americans health. Pregnant women and
families need us to act now to contain
the virus and ensure it does not affect
more Ohioans.
We have more than 25 cases of Zika
in Ohio, including pregnant women,
who are disproportionately impacted by
the virus. When women contract Zika
during their pregnancies, it puts their
babies at risk for serious birth defects.
Last week, we learned that for the first
time, someone contracted Zika from a
mosquito bite that occurred here in the
United States, in Florida.
With transmissions now happening
on American soil, we must do more to
give our communities the tools they
need to prevent the virus, and to help
those who are impacted.
While Ohio and other states have
received some limited funding from
the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, it isnt enough. My

Democratic colleagues have called on
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and
House Speaker Paul Ryan to hold a vote
on a bipartisan bill that will fund our
response to this emergency. I support
this call to action because the longer we
wait, the more vulnerable our constituents will be.
Lack of emergency funding is already
hurting efforts to develop a vaccine to
prevent Zika. I worked on legislation
that became law in April to add Zika to
a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
program that helps companies get to
work developing vaccines faster. But
because Congress continues to hold this
funding hostage, the National Institutes
of Health has said that critical clinical
trials for a vaccine could be delayed.
Our communities are waiting for
help. Local health agencies are waiting.
Pregnant women across the country are
waiting. Congress should end its recess,
put an emergency funding bill on the
floor, and get this done.

DID YOU KNOW-That

the name of the town Fort
Jennings dates back to the
year 1812?
Fort Jennings, meaning
the fort itself and not the
town as we now know it,
was built in the year 1812 by
Colonel Jennings, who served
under General William Henry
Harrison in the War of 1812,
our second war with England.
This fort was one of a
string built by Harrisons
forces along his line of march
and used for defense against
the British and their Indian
allies.
A monument surrounded
by a white fence on State
Route 189 marks the spot
where a group of some 600
Kentucky volunteers, prepared to serve its country in
the war with the British and
Indians on the frontiers in and
bordering northwest Ohio,
supposedly built the Fort
Jennings blockhouse during
the War of 1812.
The
2nd
Regiment
of Kentucky Volunteer
Militia was commanded by Lt. Colonel William
Jennings. The regiment was
formed for service on the
1st of September, 1812 in
Frankfort, Kentucky. By the
middle of September, 1812,
the Regiment was encamped
at St. Marys with General
William Henry Harrison, a
future president, who ordered
Col. Jennings to proceed
north with his regiment, in
a letter dated the 24th of
September.
Advancing about 30
miles, Lt. Col. Jennings saw
signs of Indians, and his spies
reported the enemy was at Ft.
Defiance. He halted on the
banks of the Auglaize and
began building the blockhouse. General Harrison had
directed that Jennings was
to build a blockhouse in the
largest size of such buildings
not less than 25 feet in the
bottom story. The completed fort, which consisted of
the blockhouse and a breastworks of logs encompassing
roughly an acre, was completed in October of 1812
During the building of the
fort, the men stationed here
camped in tents.
On October 1, Gen.
Harrison and several regiments of approximately 3,000
men spent the night at the fort
as they were advancing to
assist Gen. Winchester at Ft.
Defiance. The weather was
unusually cold and it rained
incessantly all day. The men
rested wherever they could
find a dry spot; many leaned
against trees. In mid-October, 1812, Lt. Col. Jennings
regiment, now under Gen.
Winchesters
command,
completed the fort at their
encampment. Named in honor
of Lt. Col. Jennings, the fort
was built to store supplies.
With the fort completed, life
at the stockade seemed routine and monotonous to the
Kentucky men. One wrote,
We had the same unpleasant,
uninteresting round of escorting convoys and provisions
etc in advance of us. The
2nd Regiment provided the

garrison force, and in addition, produced cartridges,

built rafts and pirogues for
transporting supplies via the
Auglaize River and patrolled
the local area for signs of
hostile natives.
Fort Jennings was located on the West bank of the
Auglaize River, where the village of Fort Jennings stands
today. The Fort Jennings
Historical Society is trying to
determine exactly where the
fort stood during the War of
1812. About a dozen soldiers
are believed to have died at
Fort Jennings. A history buff
Julie Wiley noted This history is really important to
Northwest Ohio. This was
our war. It was fought on our
ground,
In June 2013 the Ohio
State University forensic
anthropology team, using
a ground penetrating radar
device, tried to determine
exactly where Fort Jennings
stood, but nothing was found.
Was the blockhouse built
where the present monument
stands or was it built, as some
believe, on the location of the
Memorial Hall?
Memorial Hall was built
because, as the Centennial of
the War of 1812 approached,
citizens of Fort Jennings
decided to honor the veterans. The Memorial Hall
stands above the Auglaize
River, supposedly near the
site of the original fort. This
veterans memorial, finished
in 1916, has been a landmark in the Village of Fort
Jennings for 100 years,

Memorial Hall was truly
the center of the community. Nonetheless the years did
take a toll on the building and
it fell into disrepair. Then, as
the bicentennial of the War of
1812 approached, the consensus was that the Hall should
be a part of the celebration.
The newly recreated Fort
Jennings Historical Society
took on the task of repairing
the damage with contributions of time and resources
donated by community businesses and volunteers. The
work was ultimately completed on time for the War
of 1812 bicentennial in 2012.

Now in 2016 the Memorial
Hall is 100 years old and
we will commemorate it, and
our military history with an
enormous display of military
memorabilia, housed at the
Hall, and the contributions
of all our veterans at Fort
Fest the weekend of August
19 - 21.
Fort Fest takes place
along the historic banks of
the Auglaize River, where
an 1812 encampment of the
2nd Regiment of Kentucky
Volunteer Militia re-enactors, Colonel Jennings original regiment, can be found.
Black powder and cannon
fire fill the air at live War of
1812 re-enactments that takes
place at twilight on Friday
and again on Saturday afternoon. The Vietnam re-enactment group, The Wolf
Hounds, make camp near a
large military vehicle show
held on Saturday and perform live re-enactments of
Vietnam battles utilizing the
Huey helicopters. Many other
military displays and tributes
will be present including the
Ohio MIA/POW wall and
the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier. Other activities
include a motorcade/motorcycle run, wine tasting, car
show, and entertainment featuring Nashville Crush and
Midwest Dueling Pianos.

In regards to the hunt for
the Fort if any person or organization would be interested
in combing the area with a
metal detector or doing an
archaeological dig please
contact the Fort Jennings
Historical Society. I found a
1902 photo (see photo) which
might help locate the Fort.
And were also hunting for
the time capsule that was put
together in 1962 during the
150 year celebration. No one
remembers where or if it was
buried.
The Old Commercial Bank building stands

proudly at the southwest corner of Main and
Third street. Built in 1912, it was patterned
after the Flatiron Building in New York City
and served as the Commercial Bank until the
1970s. But there is more in its history.
Using the Third Street entrance of the
building, part of the Canal Commission museum complex, there is a glass display case as
you go up the steps which contains a little history of Delphos. The old Commercial Bank
building is one of only a few 3-story buildings
in Delphos and was built to house more than
one business.
The little bit of history is a hand-painted
directory of the businesses located on the
second and third floors and is most likely
from sometime in the 1940s. It shows that the
Catholic Knights of Ohio and the Catholic
Ladies of Columbia occupied the room that
is now where church and school items are
displayed by the museum, while the Knights
of Columbus used the entire third floor, now
a dance studio.
Six of the eight rooms off the wide second
floor hallway were used by a chiropractor,
Dr. W. E. Meyer, who had three connecting
rooms; a dentist, Dr. H. M. Viel, who had two

connecting rooms; and the Delphos Dental
Laboratory, which had one room. The seventh
room was shared by the law firm of John
March Jr. and by W. H. Jauman Insurance. An
eighth room was apparently vacant.
Although the directory is caught in the
1940s, the occupants did not remain the same.
A look at a 1957 city directory showed that
Paula Minzing and J.H. Clark joined the law
firm with John March and now shared two
rooms with Jauman Insurance. Dr. Viel was
gone and replaced by Dr. Ralph Best and J.
H. Jones Realty was in the former chiropractor rooms. The City Solicitor and Delphos
Chamber of Commerce were located here for
a short time in the 1960s, but by 1969, the
only occupant left on the second floor was
Jones Realty.
Today, all those rooms are used for storage,
but if the museum continues to prosper and
grow they could become display areas in the
future and once again be open for business.

10 Years Ago 2006
While engaged in a race for the U.S.
House of Representatives, one state
politician stopped in Delphos to tour a
local manufacturing facility. Lakeview
Farms played host to Ohio Senator Jim
Jordan (R-Urbana) Friday. The candidate
to replace Congressman Michael Oxley
appreciates touring businesses in the state.
Cross-country rider Gary Jakacky,
52, of Oregon paused in Delphos briefly
Friday on his way to visit relatives in
Rhode Island. Jakacky, a stock market
trader, first started riding cross country
at the age of 26 and chooses different
parts of the United States to tour each

summer. Jakacky, who had been riding on
Lincoln Highway, was delighted by the
many garage sales on his route.
The 2006 AYBT boys sixth-grade
champions from Delphos include Michael
Joseph, Kyle Hamilton, Shayn Klinger,
Max Giller, Cody Kundert, Jordan
Bergfeld, Alex Clark, Nick Dunlap, Tanner
Calvelage, Zach Harmon and coaches Bob
Poling and Craig Poling.

The 119th annual meeting of the Putnam
County Historical Society will be held at
1:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in Kalida High School
music room. Beda Shafer of Lima will

speak on Lest We ForgetOur Patriotic
and Religious Heritage. First Family certificates will be presented to eligible applicants. Century Farm certificates will also
be awarded to recognize Putnam County
farms operated by the same family for over
100 years.

of six fish weighing 5 pounds 14 ounces.
Next tournament will be at Dallas Lake,
Indiana.

On Sunday, officers were sent to a business in the 200 block of North Main Street to
investigate a theft incident. Officers arrived
and met with the business owner who told
them that an item was stolen from outside
of the business. The incident remains under
investigation.
On Sunday, officers responded to the 900
block of Superior Street to speak with a male
threatening to harm himself. Officers arrived
and located the male, who did have superficial
wounds. Delphos EMS was contacted and he
was transported to the hospital for evaluation

W. D. Swithart, Democrat,
became a candidate to succeed himself as mayor of the
City of Delphos in a most
decisive manner Tuesday
in the primary election held
here. Swihart polled a total
of 582 votes in the 11 city
precincts to win over three
other candidates: William B.
Taylor, John Lehmkuhle and
Wilbur Ditto.
The end of the National
Youth Administration in
Delphos and in other places throughout the country
is seen probable, according
to a report made by Service
Director A. E. Weger at a
regular meeting of the city
council Tuesday night. The
HYA has been maintaining
a force of young men for
part time work in Delphos on
streets, sidewalks and other
project work.

On Monday. officers met with a male at the
police department that requested a report for
damage done to his vehicle. The male stated
that he was driving over the railroad tracks
on South Canal Street when he bottomed out,
causing extensive damage.
On Monday, officers responded to the 500
block of Fort Jennings Road to do a well-being check on a resident. Officers arrived and
found a female that was unresponsive due to
prescription medication overdose. Officers
contacted Delphos EMS and the female was
transported to the hospital for treatment.
Nothings are made from special

dough that is rolled thin and then deepfat fried. This is very hard work, and it
took the sisters a few hours to get all
the dough rolled. Once the Nothings
are puffy, they are taken out of the oil,
drained and topped with sugar. The
stacks of Nothings were covered and
will be passed at the meal as a special
treat.
At noon, the helpers enjoyed a delicious meal of casseroles, salads and
desserts, all provided by the cooks. All
together, there are 52 cooks helping with
the wedding. They will make homemade
bread, chop broccoli and cauliflower
for salad, clean strawberries and finish
up whatever else needs to be done. All
the cooks will assemble the morning of
the wedding to peel and cook potatoes,
assemble hot foods to cook and prepare
salads. They will ready dishes to begin
the first serving at about noon, after the
marriage ceremony, which will start
about 9 a.m.
This is a big undertaking! What
strikes me as I observe the work being
done is that there is no arguing or complaining from anyone. Everyone is excited and willing to work. There is laughter
and horseplay. The Amish focus a lot
on family togetherness and dont have
many of the distractions that we English
people have. Lovinas family is closeknit and loving. They have hard times
and disappointments like everyone else,
but their faith in God and close family
sustains them through those times.

This week, as the Eicher family gets
ready for Mose and Susans big day, will
be filled with hard work, amazing food,
good conversation and lots of laughter.
Here is a recipe for a small quantity
of Amish Wedding Nothings.
Amish Wedding Nothings
1 egg, well beaten
3/4 cup cream (3 large cook spoons
of heavy cream)
salt
2 cups flour
cup powdered sugar (for topping
only)
2-3 cups shortening (for frying, may
need to adjust for size of pan or kettle)
Beat egg and stir in cream, salt, and
enough flour to make elastic dough.
Make 6 or 7 balls out of the dough. Roll
out each ball of dough very flat and thin,
about 1/16-inch think. Cut about six
3-inch slits in the middle of the circles.
Heat shortening in a large kettle over
high heat (or use an electric frying pan
with a temperature control). When the
shortening is 365 degrees, test a piece of
dough to see if it sizzles; put a rolled-out
Nothing into the kettle or fry pan. Fry
one at a time, unless you have a huge
kettle. Turn each piece over with forks
or large spatula once it turns golden on
the bottom. Remove from oil and place
on plate covered with paper towels to
drain. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top
while warm. Stack the Nothings on top
of each other to serve. Makes 6-7.

to Theft, F5. The Court ordered
a pre-sentence investigation and
set sentencing for 9 a.m. Sept.

Nathan Egly, 30, Ft.

guilty to Possession of Heroin,
F4 (reduced from F3). He then
requested and was granted
Treatment in Lieu of Conviction
and his case was stayed pending completion of the treatment

probation by failing to report to
probation. He was resentenced

to five years community control, three years intensive probation, under the same conditions
as before with the following

jail with credit for 24 days

Wert, admitted to violating her
probation by testing positive for
drugs. Her case was set for further hearing on Sept. 7.

cocaine. He was resentenced to

admitted to violating his probation by failing to report to
probation. He was sentenced
to serve his previously deferred
prison sentence of 12 months,
concurrent with his current prison sentence from another county. Credit for seven days served.
Casey McMillen, 32, Van
Wert, admitted to violating his
probation by testing positive for
opiates. He was re-sentenced to
three years community control
under same conditions plus: 60
days jail, drug court assessment.
An 11-month prison term was
deferred.

VAN WERT If someone would have told Tony Unverferth as recently as a couple of years
ago that he would someday hold an administrative position inside of Vantage Career Center, he
would have chuckled and shrugged it off.
However, that has all changed now. As this school year gets underway at the Center, it begins
with Unverferth occupying the office entitled, High School Office, a position he admits is
still a bit stunning to him.
I never thought about administrative work; always teaching, said Unverferth. It took me
time to realize that even in administration, I can continue to have an influence assisting kids in
exploring their future and what they would like to do.
Actually, there was another layer to uncover in understanding Unverferths dream when he
graduated as a star athlete at Kalida High School in 2002.
I wanted to be a journalist; I wanted to work for ESPN, said Unverferth. I knew I couldnt
play professional sports or big-time college sports. This was the next best thing. I wanted to
cover professional sports, so I started attending the University of Dayton with a major in journalism.
Following graduation from the University of Dayton (UD) with a bachelor of arts in communication, he was hired in as sales assistant for WLIO in Lima.
I could write commercials and use the creativity I had, noted Unverferth. I was involved
in communication, an industry I had passion for.
In the meantime, Unverferth started coaching eighth-grade basketball at Kalida. On the way
home on the bus, he would help the kids with their homework. In fact, he fell in love with the
interaction with the students so much that he decided to go back to UD and work on a teaching
license.
This time, he was given the opportunity to teach government and military history at Vantage.
All along, he was completing a masters degree in social studies and education.
For six years, Unverferth taught with so much enjoyment in the classroom that he never
visualized he would ever want to or be willing to do anything else.
Thats when Ben Winans, a former director at Vantage, casually offered Unverferth the
opportunity to attend an administrators conference in Columbus.
When I was there I realized that I could still affect the kids every day, that even in an
administrators position, I could still have an impact on kids every day, observed Unverferth.
It was back to college where Unverferth started work on his administrators license. In the
meantime, Winans accepted a position at Wayne Trace Schools and Unverferth was offered the
chance to step into Winans office.
I love this school; I thought I would give it a shot, said Unverferth. Everybody here is so
helpful and awesome. It doesnt matter who I ask.
Unverferths wife, Erica, a former basketball star at Ottoville, serves as a dentist in Van Wert.
They have two children, Trey and Kinley, and live in Kalida.
I have always loved taking on challenges, said Unverferth. This is another one. We have
to establish common goals. Right now were thinking of different goals that we can implement.
We need to make sure that we have our goals established before we can move forward.

Defining Lauf as someone

in a position of authority over
the child who then repeatedly used that authority to
forcibly sexually abuse her,
Schroeder described Laufs
actions as the single worst
offense that could be perpetrated against a child. He then
addressed Laufs demeanor.
Throughout the course
of this prosecution and jury
trial, the defendant has shown
no accountability whatsoever
for any of the acts in this
case, Schroeder said. He
has shown no remorse whatsoever and an individual who
shows no accountability and
no remorse for violent sex
offenses against a child poses
a risk to this society and a
danger.
Schroeder then requested
the court to impose the maximum sentence.
Both the victim, Caroline
Johns, and her mother, Laufs
ex-wife Leslie Lauf, read
statements to the court. As
the victim prepared to read
her statement, Lauf leaned
over in his chair, made eye
contact with his ex-wife and
mouthed the words, Youre
dead.
What you did was a really disgusting thing to do,
especially to a 10- to 12-yearold child, the girl said. You
have taken my childhood
away from me. All I wanted
was a daddy who loved me.
What Trent did to
Caroline over the course of
two years is inexcusable,
Leslie Lauf said. The two
children that he and I shared
together now have to grow
up knowing that their father

is a pedophile. I ask the court
to impose the stiffest sentence possible to keep this
sexual predator unavailable
to destroy any other children
or families.
She then directed her comments to her ex-husband.
What you did to my
daughter is one of the most
horrific acts I have ever
known, Leslie Lauf said,
then proceeded to express her
forgiveness, not for his sake,
she said, but for her own.
Laufs defense attorney, William Kluge, then
addressed the court.
He comes from a nice
family, I knew his dad well
and I know his mom, Kluge
said. Everyone is just sitting
back and saying, how can this
be? How can Trent have done
this without our knowledge?
He is going to deny this, he is
going to say that these are all
invented accusations. I know
thats not what the court usually likes to hear, but in this
case, I believe thats probably
what its going to hear. Ill let
Trent proceed.
Lauf failed to disappoint,
describing the case against
him as a web of lies and
characterizing his ex-wife as
a liar, drug addict and thief;
the sheriffs and prosecutors offices as deliberately
negligent; and his defense
as incompetent. During the
course of his statement, he
described himself as a religious man and fumbled his
way through a poorly memorized Bible verse, ultimately
throwing it aside and telling
his ex-wife and stepdaughter
directly that they were going
to Hell for bearing false witness.

I am not guilty and I will
plead this til the day I die,
Lauf said. I do not deserve
life for a crime I did not
commit.
However, it wasnt until
Judge Basinger imposed the
maximum sentence allowable that Lauf truly came
unhinged.
You can judge my bones
and my flesh, your Honor,
but know, at the end of the
days, my judgment will be
with those sheep as you and
the prostitute and Leslie and
Caroline will be judged at
the end and with the goats
and be sent to Hell for injustice, Lauf bellowed as Judge
Basinger read the particulars
of his sentence. Thank you
for committing another atrocity in Putnam County like
you did for murder before,
your Honor. It will come back
to haunt you.
His rant continued for
several minutes as he proclaimed his innocence and
heaped curses on the court
and his accusers, going so far
as to accuse his stepdaughter,
the victim in his case, of
the very crime for which he
was convicted. His diatribe
continued even as he was
escorted from the courtroom
and the building.
In addition to his prison sentence, Lauf was also
determined a Tier 3 sexual
offender. Under that classification, should he at some
point find release from prison, he is required to register
as such with any local jurisdiction within which he lives
for the remainder of his life.
Cooper
I like that he has real road experience as
well as small-town experience, Police Chief
Mark Slate said. He also scored highest on
the test and interviewed the best.
Cooper is a graduate of Hardin Northern
High School and Rhodes State College graduate, earning an associates degree criminal
justice.
Slate said Cooper is already fitting in.
Hes friendly and hes met almost all his

fellow officers, Slate added.
He also said he liked Coopers enthusiasm.
Alec is eager to work and keep advancing
and learning, he said.
Slate said a full-time officer was needed
as a current officer was taking an extended
medical leave.
We arent increasing our ranks, he said.
Were just holding at the same number.
