Sec?on 1: General Informa?on

General Informa5on About Jakarta.

The Host City of Asian African Summit 2015

Capital of the Republic of Indonesia , Jakarta is a huge, sprawling metropolis, home

to 9 million people. During the day the number increases with another 2 million as
commuters make their way to work in the city, and ock out again in the evenings.

Located on the northern coast of Java, the province of Jakarta has rapidly
expanded through the years, absorbing many villages in the process. In fact Jakarta
is a conglomera?on of villages known as kampungs, now crossed by main roads
and super highways. It is small wonder, therefore, that you may drive down one
wide avenue one minute then suddenly nd yourself squeezed into a small street
together with scores of cars and motorbikes. The names of these former villages
can be detected from their main streets, such as Tanah Abang, Kebon Kacang,
Kebon Jeruk, Kampung Melayu, and many more. Together with its many suburbs
Jakarta has become a megapolitan city. Therefore, when you visit Jakarta it is best
to invest in a good map, or rely on GPS.

Jakarta itself is built on a wide at delta, intersected by no less than 13 rivers.
Fron?ng the city in the Bay of Jakarta are a large number of ?ny islands known as
the Thousand Islands or Pulau Seribu, a tourist resort for snorkeling and swimming.
To its south are the majes?c volcanoes of Gede and Pangrango, where are cool
mountain resorts like Bogor, Puncak, Sukabumi and Bandung.

Capital city of a country with 240 million popula?on, Jakarta is not only the seat of
the na?onal government and the provincial government, it is also Indonesias
poli?cal center. Moreover, Jakarta is also the center and hub of Indonesias
na?onal nance and trade. It is no wonder, that you will nd Jakarta an ever
dynamic city, a city that never sleeps.

General Informa5on about Bandung.

The Host city of Asian African Conference 1955
and its 60th Commemora5on

Bandung, capital of West Java , is a great place to visit any ?me of the year as its not only
renowned for its picturesque open vista, but the town also oers many aNrac?ons well
worth a visit.

Surrounded by green fer?le mountains, Bandung today is Indonesias center for learning
and crea?vity. Here is the well-known Ins?tute Technology Bandung (ITB) established since
1920, the university that has produced many of Indonesias top scien?sts from engineers,
geologists to leaders in business management. Today Bandung is one of Indonesias most
pres?gious university towns. Bandung is also the center of Indonesias burgeoning ICT
technology, at the same ?me it is a center of arts and ar?sts. Every weekend and long
holidays the city is lled with young people from Jakarta who ock to Bandung to enjoy its
youthful crea?ve atmosphere in music, pain?ng, fashion, and the culinary arts. Bandung
has a rich heritage of buildings in exemplary art deco architecture. They include the
beau?ful Villa Isola, - now housing the University for Educa?on-, the Concordia, the present
Asian-African Museum, which was then the Societys Clubhouse- , the main Braga shopping
center, where the Dutch colonial elite went to shop, and the Savoy-Homann and Preanger
hotels, where they would hold grand balls.

In those colonial heydays in the early 20th century, Bandung became known as Paris van
Java, or the Paris of Java, where Dutch planters and ladies paraded and aunted their
wealth and beauty along the boulevards and Bragaweg, then the Champs Elysees of the
East.

Today, Bandung is remembered in history interna?onally as the venue of the First Asian-
African Conference held in 1955 which brought together for the rst ?me, leaders of 29
Asian and African countries, who jointly declared to ght colonialism for na?onal
independence. ANending the Conference were noted na?onal leaders, among whom,
Jawaharlal Nehru and daughter Indira Gandhi of India, Chao En Lai of China, Gamal Abdel
Nasser of Egypt, Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia and Indonesias own President
Soekarno. The Asian-African Conference became the precursor of the Non-Aligned
Movement.

Now Bandung is ready to once again ensures that the spirit and determina?on of the
conference remain strong as it hosts the 60th commemora?on of the Asian African
8
Conference. Source: Indonesia Travel Des3na3on The Ministry of Tourism Indonesia

Sec?on 2: Arrival in Jakarta

Arrival in Jakarta

Most interna?onal travelers arrive via the Soekarno-HaNa Interna?onal Airport about
15miles (25km) west of the city. The majority of interna?onal ights to Indonesia come
through this airport, which makes genng to Jakarta fairly easy. Some of the larger airlines
represented are China Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Cathay Pacic, Singapore Airlines,
Malaysia Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Emirates, E?had, Korean Air,
Luohansa, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Mihin Lanka, and Qantas. Garuda Indonesia, the
na?onal ag carrier also connects Jakarta to interna?onal des?na?ons in Australia, Far
East, Asia, and the Middle East. To get to Indonesia from Western Europe or North
America, it will probably be necessary to transfer at one of the larger gateway ci?es in Asia
or the Middle East such as Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Dubai, Doha, or Abu
Dhabi. The rise of budget airlines has seen a sharp fall in the cost of services to Jakarta
from places like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok so more and more budget
travellers are arriving into the city by air rather than the tradi?onal overland routes.
