Anewstudyshowsthatonenightofsleepdeprivationincreasesmorningbloodconcentrationsof
NSEandS100Binhealthyyoungmen.Thesemoleculesaretypicallyfoundinthebrain.Thus,
theirriseinbloodaftersleeplossmayindicatethatalackofsnoozingmightbeconducivetoa
lossofbraintissue.
FULLSTORY
AnewstudyfromUppsalaUniversity,Sweden,showsthatonenightofsleepdeprivation
increasesmorningbloodconcentrationsofNSEandS100Binhealthyyoungmen.
Thesemoleculesaretypicallyfoundinthebrain.Thus,theirriseinbloodaftersleeploss
mayindicatethatalackofsnoozingmightbeconducivetoalossofbraintissue.The
findingsarepublishedinthejournalSleep.
Fifteennormalweightmenparticipatedinthestudy.Inoneconditiontheyweresleepdeprivedforonenight,
whileintheotherconditiontheysleptforapproximately8hours.
"WeobservedthatanightoftotalsleeplosswasfollowedbyincreasedbloodconcentrationsofNSEandS
100B.Thesebrainmoleculestypicallyriseinbloodunderconditionsofbraindamage.Thus,ourresultsindicate
thatalackofsleepmaypromoteneurodegenerativeprocesses,"sayssleepresearcherChristianBenedictat
theDepartmentofNeuroscience,UppsalaUniversity,wholeadthestudy.
