Course Description:
CHEM 215 covers fundamental analytical processes, including solution equilibria,
titrations, electrochemical theory and applications, chromatography and
spectrophotometric techniques.
STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES
As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be able to:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

6.

Demonstrate a mastery of expressing chemical concentrations in units of molarity,

molality, percent composition, parts per million, and parts per billion.
Understand how to prepare dilute samples of various concentrations from a stock
solution.
Determine which technique to use based on an understanding of experimental
parameters.
Recognize and use the different types of titrimetric analysis methods (acid-base,
complexation, redox, and precipitation).
Understanding of the principles and theory behind chemical equilibria,
quantitative analyses, and the laboratory equipment used to do real-world
analytical chemistry.
Interpret the results of quantitative experiments and interpret the data in
meaningful ways.

Course Expectation:
- Students are expected to study daily, to come prepared and to solve problems.
- Students are expected to bring their calculators to the lecturers and recitations.
Missing Exams:
- Absence from exams and/or the final exam is not allowed unless under hindering
circumstances.
- In case of absence for reasons beyond control, a valid excuse should be submitted
to the instructor as soon as possible.
- No makeup exams will be given. If the excuse is accepted, a new grading scheme
will be decided upon for the course final grade calculations.
- If the student misses any exam without valid reason, he/she will get zero in that
exam.
- In case of absence from the final examination with a valid reason, a student is
entitled to a make-up final upon consent of the Instructor and the Arts and
Sciences Deans office.
Academic Integrity and Students Responsibility:
Dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated in this course. Cheating is a violation of
the Universitys academic regulations and is subject to disciplinary action.
Cheating on exams and/or copying of assignments will result in a grade of zero for
that exam/assignment.
Students should familiarize themselves with the details of the Universitys Student
Code-of-Conduct as published in the annual Student Handbook.
Students are held responsible for all announcements in class and on Moodle, whether
they are present or absent for that day.
