Technology offer

Smart Coatings for Corrosion Protection

The technology offers a simple, cost-effective and
novel process of production of smart self-healing
coating of conducting polymers useful for protection of
iron and steel metal surface from corrosion.
When the chemical structure of a metal surface is
damaged, this conjugated or conducting polymer
composite forms chemical bonds for site passivation
and self-heal the damaged surface, even in extreme
marine environments. This technology extends the life
of the coating twofold than other conventional coatings.
This environmentally friendly technology is devoid of
heavy metal ions and hazardous chromates, is
biodegradable and has excellent film forming property.
The most common way to prevent a metal from corroding or delay its corrosion is to provide
an impervious coating over it. Organic coatings have long been used to protect metals
against corrosion. However, most conventional coatings, such as paints, are not permanently
impenetrable, and all coating systems eventually fail, either through existing pinholes in the
coating or by diffusion of oxygen and water through it. Designing marine structure using
corrosion resistant materials such as iron with chromium (stainless steel) and alloys of
titanium, zirconium is not cost effective on large-scale.
This low-cost smart self-healing coating of conducting polymers for corrosion protection
specifically in marine environments has been able to provide an alternative solution to
convention corrosion protection. It has smart action and self-healing ability for pinhole scratch
site passivation. This cost-effective smart coatings technology will also facilitate the paint and
corrosion industry to solve the environmental issues.
The adhesion of the coating was successfully tested by Tape Test as per ASTM D3359-02.
The formulated paints were tested for the physical properties as per the ASTM Standards,
For Painted Panels, Dry film thickness, Impact resistance,
Adhesion, Flexibility and Abrasion Resistance were
tested as per the ASTM Standards.
Manufacturing Process
First of all various conducting polymers (pigments) were
synthesized, followed with Pigment characterization,
Paint formulation with conducting polymer pigments using

various binders and testing of formulated paints for physical attributes.

Plant and Machinery
The main machinery required are, Reaction kettle, Refrigeration unit, Centrifuge, Ball mill,
Vessels, Sieves with Shakers, Ovens.
Market Potential
There is a growing demand and opportunity for coating technologies which can reduce
coating costs and prevent corrosion. Demand for industrial coating products and paints are
expected to increase globally and with an expected CAGR of 6.2% between 2017 and 2025.
The coating technology has broad range of
applications and can be used effectively on
metal and concrete structures in various
places, metals in marine environment, etc.
This coating technology can be applied across
multiple industries. This Self-healing epoxy
primer paint can be used for protection of all
types of iron & steel in Industrial and Marine
Environments.
Application
The smart self-healing coating technology is applicable to a broad range of end users
including:

Bridges
Under surface of Railway coaches, wagons, car, bike scooter Railway coaches
Concrete structure
Ship hulls
Undersea oil pipeline
Transmission towers and electricity poles
TV and microwave transmission towers
