DELPHOS If your
family has lived in
Delphos for generations,
theres a group who wants
to talk to you. Local historians have gathered to
put the story of Delphos
down on paper.
Helen
Kaverman,
Dave Desenberg, Theresa
Bradstock
and
Betty
Schmelzer, along with
numerous others interested in preserving their
hometowns history in a
book, are seeking memories of events that happened in Delphos and the
surrounding countryside,
including Landeck. The
name of the publication
Lilly Hempfling, daughter of Chuck and Sue Hempfling will be Delphos Town
and a member of the Delphos Pathfinders 4H Club, took and Country Including
the Reserve Champion Tom Turkey to the Van Wert Landeck.

Pearl Harbor attack

DELPHOS Dec. 7, 1941: it was a day that

changed the world. It changed the lives of millions
of Americans including many from Delphos and the
surrounding area.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Pearl
Harbor attack and Americas entry into World War II,
the Delphos Canal Museum and Museum of Postal
History are teaming up to debut new exhibits.
The Canal Museum will display the artifacts of war;
uniforms, medals, photos, posters, ration books, etc.
items that were personal and part of daily life from
1941-45, both on the front lines and on the home front.

Group helps people deal with any kind of loss

DELPHOS Life After Loss is a

support group in Delphos for everyone suffering from loss. They meet
at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of
every month at St. Johns Ministry
Center.
The center is located at 201 North
Pierce St.
However, the group is non-denominational.
Anyone struggling with loss of
any kind is welcome, Dr. Jane
Bonifas said.
Dr. Bonifas is one of the facilita-
tors of the group. She is a licensed

psychologist. She says most of her
practice is in counseling. The other
facilitators are Pastor Dave Howell
and Deacon John Sheeran. Howell
also has experience in counseling.
They are open to those suffering
loss of any kind.
Most people assume the loss is
because of death, but it can be any
kind of loss, Bonifas said. Loss of
a house or anything else.
Those who attend the meetings
are asked to keep others stories
confidential. Those attending must
also be prepared to listen to what
others say.

helped them overcome their grief,
theyre asked to share that, too.
According to Bonifas, the meetings are typically one-and-a-half
hours.
Those unsure if they feel comfortable attending the meetings may
call Bonifas, Howell or Sheeran to
discuss things over the phone.
If theyre wary, they can call
one of us and let us know whats
happening so we can help in anyway, Bonifas said.
DELPHOS In its continued effort to raise funds for the

Splash Pad Project, the Kiwanis Club of Delphos will host
Ducktoberfest on Oct. 1 at the Delphos Knights of Columbus hall.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and food for purchase.
The event includes seven duck races and wagering from 6-8
p.m., a 50-50 drawing, raffles and more. There will also be a
surprise celebrity race announcer.
Deuces Wild will perform from 9 p.m. until midnight.
The K of C is providing the location and Deuces Wild is
providing the entertainment at no charge.
Admission is free. Everyone must be 21 years or older.
The splash pad is a stand-alone facility and its construction
will not cost the city any money and once up and running, the
only cost will be the initial water used to fill the contained system at the start of the season.

DELPHOS On Aug. 26, officers were dispatched to the
700 block of East Suthoff Street in reference to an assault.
Officers arrived and spoke with a male at the residence who
stated that he was assaulted by his brother-in-law. The suspect
had left prior to officers arrival. A report was taken and the
complainant was advised of the victim filing procedures.
On Aug. 26, officers took a report from a female who has
been receiving unwanted text messages from a male known to
her. Officers were attempting to locate the male to advise him
to cease contacting her.
On Aug. 26, officers were dispatched to the 300 block
of West Second Street to investigate a theft incident. Upon
arrival, officers found that two bicycles were taken while
parked outside. Officers were given the name of a suspect, a
14-year-old male, and made contact with him. After a short
investigation, officers were able to locate one of the bicycles
immediately and the second one a short time later. Both bicycles were returned to the victims and charges have been filed
for two counts of theft in Van Wert Juvenile Court.
On Aug. 26, officers were sent to the 500 block of Jackson
Street to meet with a complainant in regards to a theft that
had occurred in the 200 block of North Jefferson Street. Upon
arrival, officers found that the item stolen was a bicycle.
Officers began checking for the bicycle and found it to be
in possession of a second 14-year-old male. The bicycle was
returned to the owner and charges were filed on the second
juvenile.
On Aug. 27, officers met with a female in the 100 block of
South Canal Street in reference to damage done to her vehicle while going over the railroad tracks. The vehicle, which
sustained substantial damage, was towed from the scene and
a report was taken.
On Aug. 27, officers responded to the 600 block of North
Bredeick Street in reference to a dispute. Officers arrived and
met with a male and female. The female complainant told
officers that she was receiving unwanted advances from the
male. The male left the residence voluntarily.
On Aug. 27, officers spoke with a female in the 600 block
of Wayne Street in regards to her daughter running away.
Officers took a report and entered the juvenile into the Law
Enforcement Database as a missing/runaway juvenile. The
female was located in Lima a short time later. Charges will be
filed in juvenile court for ungovernable juvenile.
On Sunday, officers were dispatched to a residence in
the 400 block of East Second Street to investigate a missing
female. Officers met with the females husband and found that
she had left the residence while he was asleep. Officers made
contact with the female a short time later and met with her.
After speaking with the female, she stated that she wished to
go to the hospital for a mental evaluation. She was transported
to the hospital a short time later.
On Sunday, officers, along with Delphos EMS, responded
to a residence on South Bredeick Street in response to a call
of an unresponsive male in a vehicle. Upon arrival, the male
was located and EMS personnel began administering first
aid. After a short time the male did regain consciousness. The
male, 34-year-old Jason Lamb of Delphos, will be charged
with possession of drug abuse instruments as well a being in
physical control of a vehicle while under the influence of a
drug or alcohol.
On Sunday, officers received a complaint of a stolen bicycle in the 200 block of North Cass Street. Officers received a
description of the bicycle and took a report. The bicycle was
not recovered as of report time.
On Monday, officers met with a female in the 200 block
of Westbrook Avenue. The female told officers that she found
that an unknown person or persons had opened multiple credit
card accounts in her name. No charges had been made on the
cards as of report time and the incident remains under investigation.

Angela M. Miller
June 19, 1930-Sept. 1, 2016
OTTOVILLE Angela M.
Miller, 86, of Ottoville died at
9:05 a.m. Thursday at St. Ritas
Hospice in Lima.
She was born June 19, 1930,
in Kalida to the late Clem and
Mary (Doepker) Kahle. On Aug.
22, 1953, she married Norbert
Miller, who survives in Ottoville.
Other survivors include five
children: Ronald (June) Miller
of Ottoville, Debra (Steve) Klaus
of Lima, Eugene (Sheila) Miller
of Ottoville, Dennis Bender
(Bonnie) Miller of Ottoville
and Randall (Darlene) Miller
of Elida; 14 grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and three
step great-grandchildren.
Angela retired from the cafeteria of Ottoville Schools and
she was also a homemaker. She
was a member of Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church,
Ottoville, its Altar Rosary
Society and Catholic Ladies
of Columbia as well as the
Ottoville VFW #3740 Auxiliary.
Angela loved to crochet afghans
and playing pinochle.
A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 a.m.

DELPHOS Monty W. Rupert, 67, of Delphos, passed
away on Tuesday at St. Ritas Medical Center in Lima.
He was born Dec. 1, 1948, in Lima to Clarence and Flora
(Statham) Rupert, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by two brothers, Don Rupert of Delphos and
Roy Rupert of Arlington, Virginia; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at
Harter and Schier Funeral Home, with calling one hour prior
to the service. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery
with military grave rites by the Delphos Veterans council.
Friends may also call from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral
home.

Sept. 20, 1954-Aug. 30, 2016
CLOVERDALE Dana Reed, 61, of Cloverdale passed
away on Tuesday at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
He was born Sept. 20, 1954, in Warsaw, Indiana, to John
Jay Reed and Donna May (Smith) Reed Woodling, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include 13 children: David Eccard of Van Wert,
Terri (Bob Norbeck) Sheeter, Stephanie (Brian) Plaugher and
Loni Reed, all of Lima; Todd (Dawn) Eccard, Deanna (Jim)
Williams and Tami Reed, all of Delphos; Cheryl (Hank)
Wegesin and Jennifer (Larry) Looser of Middle Point; Bethany
Reed of Evansville, Indiana; Barbara Reed of Edmonton,
Kentucky; Benjamin Reed of Summershade, Kentucky; and
Teri Dembinski of Tennessee; three sisters, Gayle (Dave)
Woodling of Warsaw, Indiana, Nancy Reed of Ft. Wayne, Amy
(William) Smith of Baytown, Texas; and one brother, Mark
(Cynthia) Reed of Warsaw, Indiana. Dana is also survived by
his companion of 30 years, Jackie Eccard, who survives in
Cloverdale.
He is preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Jo Reed; and
two children, Denise Eccard and Dana Eccard.
Funeral services will begin at noon on Friday at Harter
and Schier Funeral Home, the Rev. David Howell officiating.
Burial will be at a later date in Warsaw.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday and one hour
prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

Police use tear gas in Crawford

Street home, arrest man
VAN WERT The execution of a search
warrant at 515 E. Crawford St. in Van Wert
led to police having to use tear gas to get a
male subject out of the residence on Friday
morning.
Daniel Morgan, 28, who is believed to be
from the Columbus area, was arrested after
the incident.
The Van Wert Police Department received
a tip of illegal narcotics being sold out of
the residence. There was also information
about firearms and cocaine being inside the
residence.

When babies are learning to talk they all go about
it in a different way. It is an amazing skill to master
and it is really fun to watch your children as they
acquire their verbal abilities. It is also the skill that
worries parents the most. It is easy to find someone
elses child who is speaking more words, longer sentences or with better pronunciation. Of course, it goes
without saying that other people will be more than
willing to point this out to you, which will, of course,
add to your worries.
While it is true that speech delays do exist, I am
happy to tell you that most of the time your child is
progressing just fine and will continue to go on his
merry way, learning to talk in his own time and in
his own way. He will eventually gain all the language
skills he needs so that he can argue with you and talk
back to you and generally make you long for the days
when he couldnt speak.
But that is something you will realize years from
now. Right now, you have an adorable toddler and you
want to be reassured that he is developing normally.
As a general rule you will see that there are two
main ways that babies will learn to speak. The first

way I call parrots. These babies can speak single
words very well, can often repeat many words that
you say to them and will chatter and babble using
their known words interspersed with nonsense syllables. They can often combine 2-3 words together
but dont typically use full sentences until after they
turn two.
The second way of learning I call sponges. They
dont usually speak very many words, they do, however, seem to understand what is said to them. If you
ask them to get a toy or throw something away or give
something to daddy, they know what you are saying
and will do what you ask (this differs from teenagers
who apparently cant understand anything you say
and if they do understand will do exactly the opposite
of what you tell them to). These babies too will babble
and chatter.
Both children will verbalize as if they are speaking a foreign language. It is obvious that they know
exactly what they are saying and cannot understand
why you dont understand what they are saying. Both
babies will typically start using full sentences around

their second birthdays.
Dont despair if your baby doesnt seem to be
following this schedule. Like I said, babies follow the
beat of their own drummer and are likely developing
perfectly normally for them, they just didnt read the
book on child development.
It is a good idea to talk to your doctor if you are
concerned. They will either reassure you or they will
get them started with speech therapy or do further
assessments. Regardless of what they decide, rest
assured that for your baby it is much more important
to him that you are there to listen to his words than
whether he is speaking two words, 20 words or 200
words.

Hospital of Michigan. She is certified with The
American Board of Pediatrics since 1992. In 2003,
she moved her practice, Wishing Well Pediatrics, to

10 Years Ago 2006
For Delphos FFA member Krista
Youngpeter, showing hogs at the Van Wert
County Fair is her thing. In her sixth year of
showing swine, she has never varied from her
routine. Youngpeter, 15, is the daughter of
Kevin and Mary Youngpeter. The Jefferson
High School sophomore became interested
in showing swing, following in her older
brother Kyles footsteps. The Youngpeters
swine, owned by Kristas father and uncle,
are housed on her grandfathers farm.
He sings with the Autumn Years choraliers
and commands burial details for local veterans upon their homegoing. Larry Luersman,
75, of Delphos, provides vocal entertainment
to those in Delphos, Spencerville, Lima, and
Cloverdale nursing homes and assisted living
facilities. Luersman is a Korean War veteran
and has remained involved with veterans
activities through three different local organizations.
Both coaches would agree on one thing
for Saturday nights Jefferson/Paulding
Northwest Conference opener at Stadium
Park; the running game will be key to who
wins the encounters. We want to run the
ball. Thats what we did especially well in the
second half last week and we want to do that
this week, Jefferson coach Damon Ulm said.
25 Years Ago 1991
St. Johns boys cross country team finished second among 13 teams in the Gray
Division Saturday at the Columbus Grove
Invitational. The Blue Jay girls were sixth
of 19 teams. Botkins won the boys race with
67 points. St. Johns had 78. Matt Siefker
of Columbus Grove won the boys race in
16:33. Greg Knippen of St. Johns was third

in 17:24.
Bill Lloyd, of Lloyd Wenger Insurance
Agency of Delphos, received the Presidents
Award and congratulations from Cary Blair,
president of Westfield Insurance Company,
Westfield Center. The award was presented
during a company function and is in recognition of the agencys dedication to achieving
extraordinary profitability, growth and persistence.
Donations of two computers to St. Johns
High School new computer lab were made
by Delpha Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Olds,
Geo and Society Bank. Bob Grothouse of
Delphos, presented a check to Rev. James
Peiffer, superintendent of St. Johns School.
John Miller, Society branch sales manager
and loan manager, also presented a check to
Rev. Peiffer.
35 Years Ago 1981
Former Delphos service and safety director and businessman Irvin H. Hanf, 74, died
Wednesday at St. Ritas Medical Center. Hanf
was city service and safety director from Jan.
1, 1951 until Dec. 31, 1953 and service director from Jan. 1, 1960 until Dec. 31, 1967. He
founded Hanfs Grocery in 1948 located on
East Second Street. In 1954 he moved the
store to East Cleveland Street where he operated it until 1960.
General Putnams Drum and Bugle Corps
of Ottawa recently returned from international competition in Montreal, Quebec. The
corps, under the direction of Brice Musser,
took 11th place among 53 Class A corps participating. It was the corps first international
competition. Mark Kundert, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Donald Kundert of Delphos, is a drummer with the corps.

50 Years Ago 1966
Sharon Manore is spending a few days
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Manore of Delphos, after a recent visit to
London, England and the Continent. While in
Europe she toured the Netherlands, Germany,
Switzerland, Austria, Italy and France.
Manore will resume her teaching duties with
the Fort Wayne Community Schools this fall.
Putnam County youngsters will be competing for placings and honors at the Ohio
State Fair this week. 4-Hers entered in state
competition included Lois Von Lehmden,
Junior Fair Queen contest; Linda Butler, 4-H
Club Assistant; Marilyn Elwer, Sally Fuller,
and Sandra Bibler, 4-H Club Demonstrations,
and Karen Weis, nutrition demonstration.
Bonnie Fry and Carol Mueller, both of
Delphos, have been named to the Presidents
list of all A students for the summer term
at Miami-Jacobs College, Dayton. Both are
full-time students. Fry is a 1965 graduate of
Jefferson High School and Mueller is a 1966
graduate.
60 Years Ago 1956
Delphos and Fort Jennings were winners
Sunday in the West Central baseball league
playoffs being played at Kalida. Delphos,
WCL champions this season, defeated Gomer
by an 8-2 score while Fort Jennings upset the
Columbus Grove nine, 4 to 2. Keith Ayers
was on the mound for Delphos. Don McGue
gave up four hits to Grove while he had seven
strikeouts and issued two bases on balls.
Delphos and Fort Jennings will play in the
finals of the playoff next Sunday.

A fifty-year pin is to be presented to
Charles Griffith of Delphos, at a meeting
of Hope Lodge No. 214, F. and A. M.,
Wednesday evening, according to Hullinger,
master of the Masonic Lodge. Griffith, who
has been a member of the local fraternal
group for the past 50 years, is to receive his
fifty-year pin from Dr. Ezra Burnett, a member of the local Masonic 50-year Club.
75 Years Ago 1941
At a meeting of the Delphos Library Board
held Tuesday night, preparations were made
to store the collections of articles comprising
the Delphos Museum in the Franklin School.
The room in the basement of the library in
which the museum materials have been stored
for years, is not suitable and considerable
deterioration of the valuable collection has
been caused by dampness in the room.
On Sunday morning the local Presbyterian
Church will begin its fall and winter work,
according to Rev. Mark I. Andrews, pastor of
the church. A Work Planning Conference will
be held Sept. 14. Sept. 28 will be observed as
Rally Day, both in the Sabbath School and in
the Worship Hour. World Wide Communion
will be observed on Oct. 5.
Only .002 points separate the St. Louis
Cardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers in their
battle for the 1941 National League flag and,
if all goes according to script, Brooklyn may
bounce back into the lead. The Dodgers play
the Phillies whom they have beaten 12 times
in 13 games this season in a doubleheader
while the Cards engage the Chicago Cubs in
a single contest.

COLUMBUS The
Ohio State Highway Patrol is
reminding drivers to not get
behind the wheel impaired
this Labor Day weekend.
Troopers will be out in full
force removing impaired
drivers from Ohios roadways, and if you are driving
impaired, you will be arrested. Do your part in keeping
the roadway safe. Remember
to designate a sober driver if
you plan to consume alcohol.
During last years fourday holiday reporting period,
Sept. 4-7, 14 people lost their
lives on Ohios roadways.

That includes seven involving an impaired driver.
According to the National
Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA), in
2014 there were 9,967 people killed in drunk-driving
crashes nationwide, making
up nearly one-third of all
traffic fatalities that year.
The Ohio State Highway
Patrol will be out in full force
this holiday weekend, said

law enforcement will know

Horse-and-buggy trek to Indiana caps end of summer

We had a nice rain tonight.
Our rain gauge shows that we
had more than a half inch. Our
garden still has tomatoes, cabbage, green peppers and hot
peppers left in it. Yesterday we
canned almost eighty pints of
pizza sauce. We gave twenty
pints to Mose and Susan. We
also canned hot peppers. Susan
wants to make pizza casserole
tomorrow night to try out the
sauce.
Mose and Susan are getting
more settled as the weeks pass by.
They have been helping Moses
parents, as they are hosting the
wedding for Moses brother Joe
and his fiance, Mary, next week.
I was asked to be cook at the
wedding and to go help bake
pies, etc., the day before. Mose
and Susan will be table waiters at
the wedding. Susan still needs to
cut out and sew her dress for the
wedding. With her working every
day, I will probably have to help
her get it sewn.
Saturday Joe and I and the
six children here at home attended the picnic for the RV factory
where Joe works. It was interesting to tour all the RVs and
motorhomes that they make. We
were served a good meal, and
lots of door prizes and awards
were given to the many, many
employees. The grand prize was
a Howard Miller grandfather
clock. It rained and rained after
lunch, but they had plenty of
tents set up for everyone to stay
dry.
A very happy birthday goes
to sister Verena. She turned fifty
on August 22. Mose, Susan and
most of the children went over to
sing Happy Birthday to Verena
that evening.
Tomorrow morning I leave
with daughter Susan for a town
around 45 minutes away. Susan
needs to get her married name put
on her Social Security card, and
she wants me to go along.

Tonight Mose grilled banana
pepper poppers and I made
chicken noodle soup. We still
dont have all the water lines
hooked up to Mose and Susans
living quarters, so its easier for
her to use my kitchen. Most
often they just eat the evening
meal with us.
The boys and Mose are often
spending their free time having
bow practice. Mose has a big target set up, so its an easy place to
test out their skills. Hunting season will be here before we know
it. The boys passed their hunters
safety class earlier this year.
Saturday evening Timothy
and Elizabeth came for supper.
After supper Timothy, Mose,
Lorettas special friend, Dustin,
and son Joseph practiced shooting their bows. The girls and I
just relaxed and visited. Joe has
been working longer hours, so
hes always glad to rest and get
to bed earlier.
Daughter Verena and son
Benjamin, with some other
young folks, drove to northern
Indiana with horses and buggies.
They spent the night at niece
Susan and Joes house. The next
morning they drove to brother
Alberts. Church services were
held at Alberts home. Their
daughter Emma was baptized at
the service.
Sunday afternoon Verena and
Benjamin started the journey
home. They had around twenty
miles to go to get to niece Susans
house, and around seventeen
Breadsticks
1 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons butter, divided
3 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tablespoon yeast
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1 egg, beaten
pizza seasoning
Heat the milk, sugar, salt and
4 tablespoons butter; remove
from heat as soon as butter is
melted. Add the flour, yeast, garlic powder, oregano and beaten
egg. Let rise until double. Roll
out and cut the size you want.
Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons
butter in a pan, and sprinkle pizza
seasoning over it; roll breadsticks
in this mixture. Place breadsticks
on cookie sheets and let rise
again until double. Bake at 350
miles to get home from Alberts

house. Our horse Mighty handles
these long trips really well. They
do take their time, and let Mighty
walk a lot of the time.
School doors will be opening in less than two weeks. Our
school starts September 6. All
three children will be in middle
school. Joseph will be in eighth
grade, with this being his final
year of schooling. Where does
time go? Lovina will be in sixth
grade and Kevin in fifth. Kevin
will be eleven next week. It
seems like he was just born, and
now hes already turning eleven!
This is a recipe for breadsticks niece Elizabeth shared in
our family cookbook. Our children like to dip them in pizza
sauce.

Give this versatile menu a try when youre short

San Geronimo Quiche
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup flour
4 large eggs
3/4 pound (3 cups) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1-1/2 cups small-curd cottage cheese
1/2 cup crushed corn chips
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
Prepared salsa
In a large bowl, smoothly stir milk into flour, then
add eggs, cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, corn chips,
sugar and baking powder; beat mixture until well
blended.
Pour into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Bake, uncovered, in a 350-degree oven until quiche is slightly
puffed and appears set when the pan is gently shaken,
about 40 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes, then cut
into 12 equal rectangles. Transfer to plates using a
wide spatula; add salsa to taste. Makes 12 servings.
Peach Dream
Sugar
4 large (about 2 lb. total) ripe peaches
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 small can (6 oz., 3/4 cup) frozen pink lemonade
concentrate
2 cups small ice cubes or crushed ice
Rub rim of 5 or 6 glasses (about1 cup size) with
water, then dip in sugar to coat; set aside.
Peel and pit peaches; cut fruit in chunks into a
blender.
To peaches, add the lemon juice and lemonade
concentrate; whirl smooth. Add half the ice at a time,
whirling after each addition, until mixture has a fine,
slushy texture. Pour into sugar-rimmed glasses. Makes
about 4-1/2 cups, 5 or 6 servings.

Jefferson took the opening
kickoff in Friday evenings
contest against the visiting Coldwater Cavaliers at

The Wildcats used their

carries before facing a fourthand-1 at the Coldwater
15-yard line. Ultimately,
the Cavalier defense held
on a conversion attempt and
forced a turnover on downs.
The drive may have been
a foreshadowing of things to
come as Coldwater bent but
didnt break in route to a
hard-fought 20-6 victory.
We talked about how we
wanted to get the momentum
a little bit, said Jefferson
coach Chris Sommers. We
wanted to come out and compete right away and I think
we did that. We had a few
chances to score early and
didnt quite make it happen.
The Wildcat defense

Panthers welcomed the Spencerville
Bearcats on Friday night.
Parkway would find the Bearcats
triple-option rushing attack difficult to
defend for the entirety of the night as
Spencerville finished the game with 376
yards on the ground, which carried the
Bearcats to a 37-0 victory.

backfield and they were getting yards
after contact. They were breaking
tackles, Parkway head coach Shane

daily bag limit is 5 fish per angler with a 14-inch minimum size limit.
Western Basin
Walleye: Many of the fish being caught have been below the
15-inch legal size limit, primarily from the 2014 and 2015 year classes. There have been very few recent reports. The best areas have been
L can of the Camp Perry firing range and south of Kelleys Island.
Most fish have been caught by trolling with spoons or worm harnesses
and by casting with weight-forward spinners or mayfly rigs.
Yellow Perch: Fishing has been good south of the Toledo water
intake, around A and B buoys of the Camp Perry firing range,
Rattlesnake Island, both west and south of Green Island, south of
Ballast Island, between South Bass and Kelleys islands, south of
Kelleys Island and near the Marblehead Lighthouse. Perch spreaders
with shiners fished near the bottom produce the most fish.
Largemouth Bass: Largemouth bass have been caught in harbors
and along the main lake shoreline around Catawba and Marblehead
using drop-shot rigs, tube jigs and crankbaits.
Central Basin
Walleye: Good fishing was reported around the Huron dumping
grounds, 2-4 miles east of Avon Point, in 15-30 feet of water northwest of Edgewater Park, in 44-49 feet of water north-northeast of
Wildwood Park, in 35-50 feet north-northwest of Fairport and in
65-70 feet north-northeast of Ashtabula. Anglers are trolling with
dipsey divers or planer boards with weights or jet divers, ahead of
stick baits or worm harnesses. The best colors have been purple, pink,
green and white.
Yellow Perch: Fishing has been good 1-2 miles offshore from
Cranberry Creek to the castle and at Ruggles Reef. Fish have also
been caught in 42-43 feet north of Gordon Park and in 38-48 feet
northwest of Wildwood Park. Good fishing was reported farther east
in 45-50 feet northwest of Fairport Harbor and in 55-60 feet north
of Conneaut. Perch spreaders with shiners fished near the bottom
produce the most fish.
Smallmouth Bass: Fishing has been good in 10-30 feet around the
harbor areas in Cleveland, Fairport Harbor, Geneva, Ashtabula and
Conneaut using drop-shot rigs, tube jigs, spinners, crankbaits, leeches
and crayfish.
Steelhead: Fish are being picked up by anglers trolling for walleye
off Ashtabula and Conneaut (See section on central basin walleye.)
Steelhead are still being caught by boat anglers trolling offshore with
spoons and stick baits. Fish are well offshore, sitting in the thermocline over depths of 68-78 feet. As temperatures start to cool and we
progress towards fall, some fish will start to move inshore but that
may be several weeks to over a month away depending on prevailing
weather patterns.
The Lake Erie water temperature is 77 off Toledo and 77 off
Cleveland, according to the nearshore marine forecast. Anglers are
encouraged to always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal
flotation device while boating

attack and it led to another rushing
touchdown by Lotz, as they took a 14-0
late in the first quarter.
Being down 14-0, it was imperative
for Parkway to come out with some
points or at least move the ball down
field to show they had some fight within
them and that the game was not yet over.
On the first play of the drive, Baker connected with junior wideout Caden May
for a 41-yard completion and moved the
ball into Bearcat territory. From there,
the Panthers soon found themselves facing a 4th-and-six. Following a Parkway
timeout, Wellman opted to go for it.
They called a play-action pass, which
Spencerville sniffed out. The Bearcats
penetrated quickly into the backfield
and brought Baker down for the sack to
conclude the first quarter of action and
end Parkways drive.

LSU: Bayeaux Bengals have
Leonard Fournette on offense
and a terrible QB. Their defense
maybe as talented as Alabamas
will be the difference as Badgers
break in new QB.
NORTH CAROLINA: Georgia
replacing head coach and other parts.
Tar Heels trying to become more
than just a basketball school. This
is a good first step.
ALABAMA: USC is loaded with
talent; however, they struggle with
discipline and the like that you need
to be at the top of the sports world.
Bama breaking in new QB but so are
Trojans against that Tide D. I
think this will be closer game than
many pundits think but gotta go with
Saban and Company.
CLEMSON: Auburn has fallen
by the wayside, while Tigers are
being considered capable to back
up their 1981 title. QB Watson leads
the way.

I am so happy to be back this
a 52-yard touchdown run and extended

the lead to 20-0.
Spencerville ended the first half with
a field goal, making the score 23-0, and
they would open the third quarter by
marching the ball down field with their
unstoppable rushing attack. Ultimately,
that drive was capped off with a 54-yard
touchdown run by Chris Picker, bringing
the score to 30-0.
Wilson capped the scoring with his
second touchdown run late in the third.
Spencerville (1-1) returns home to
face Holgate next week. The Panthers
(0-2) begin Midwest Athletic Conference
play with a visit to defending Division
VII state champion Fort Recovery.

youd do if you did?) NFL I tend to
know a little more.
OKLAHOMA: Oklahoma has a
tough schedule to start out the season
and I think the team will be ready to
give a strong performance.
TEXAS: Notre Dame plans to
play two quarterbacks; sounds like
they dont have a good one then.
OLE MISS: My indecisiveness is
already starting. I had already typed
out Florida State and went back and
changed it.all that is to say Florida
State will end up winning now.
TEXAS A&M: Home-field
advantage will give the Aggies an
extra incentive to win, I think.
LSU: I might as well start off the
beginning of the season making sure
everyone knows my dislike for the
Big 10 (EN: Really?).
GEORGIA: I also dont like
teams in North Carolina; the only
team I like in North Carolina is when
Kentucky is visiting there to play
basketball.
ALABAMA: The uncertainty
of how new quarterbacks will play
leads the conversation from what
Ive read. The Tide defense, though,
is expected to continue to be topnotch and defense wins games.
CLEMSON: Clemson kind of
dominated last year and Auburn
didnt. I dont like to base this year
off of last years performance, but
I am.

Oklahoma Is Tom Herman a
miracle-worker? Houston is being
courted by the Big XII and a win
over Oklahoma would prove the
Cougars belong. Baker Mayfield and
the Sooners likely have a different message theyd like to send.
Oklahoma wins.
Notre Dame The Irish have
had a rough last couple of weeks off
the field, but sometimes these things

can galvanize a team. Texas should
be improved over last season, but the
Irish are the more experienced team.
Florida State Two reasons: 1- I
picked a road team in the first two
games, and 2- FSU has a chance
to be the best team in the country
this year.
Texas A&M I actually think
the Bruins are the better team, but
the Aggies at home are always tough
to beat.
LSU Wisconsin playing is
what should be counted as a home
game is tempting, but the Badgers
are a very young team and playing the game in Lambeau should
be intimidating to both teams. LSU
has more big-game experience and,
probably, a lot more talent.
North Carolina The worst
coaching move of the off-season was
Georgia getting rid of Mark Richt.
The Dawgs start missing him this
weekend.
Alabama Is it me or is USC a
preseason top-5 or top-10 every season, only to go 7-6? Talent can win
you only so many games; Bama has
talent plus Nick Saban.
Clemson I do think Auburn
will make some noise this season - at
the very least jump up and pick off
a contender or two to shake up the
SEC - but Clemson and DeShaun
Watson wants another title shot. You
wont see a hiccup in Week One.

Oklahoma - Have a feeling this
will be high scoring. The key will be
the start. If Oklahoma gets up early,
and they did quite often last year,
they will put up enough points to
open with the win.
Notre Dame - Tough pick.
Reportedly Texas is starting a freshman at quarterback and the Irish
may be playing two different quarterbacks, including last years starter
who is returning from injury. That
experienced tilted the decision in
favor of the Irish.

Central Catholics girls soccer team dominated the shots
on-goal versus St. Johns on
a breezy and cooler Thursday
afternoon at the St. Johns
Annex.
It still took a goal with
5:16 left to snap a 1-1 tie and
hand the Lady Thunderbirds
a 2-1 victory in Western Ohio
Soccer League action.
The T-Birds (2-0-2) outshot the Lady Blue Jays (0-30) 17-5 but senior Blue Jay
goalkeeper Kristina Koester
stopped 14.
Were starting to see the
Kristina of last year; she is
rounding into shape in goal.

Field awaits these two opponents. The Tigers are
the more experienced team, 18 starters back, that
includes Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette in
their backfield. And while Wisconsin would like
to reverse a narrow loss two years ago to LSU in
Baton Rouge, its been 13 years since the Tigers
have lost a non-conference game. And that streak
doesnt end here.
North Carolina Georgia has a new coach
and system to start the season, while the Tar Heels
return members of an offense that can put up
some big numbers. May not see that this weekend
as Tropical Storm Hermine moves through the
Carolinas. They should be able to do enough to
win the game.
Alabama - Crimson Tide are the defending
National champs and start the season ranked number one. The game is close to home and that should

Lake
Sturgeon
The word sturgeon means the
stirrer, which is what the fish does
when it is looking for food; it stirs
up the mud and silt on river and lake
bottoms.
The lake sturgeon requires large
bodies of water with connections to
much smaller streams for spawning.
They were historically very abundant
in both the Ohio River and Lake Erie
and would make spawning runs far
up tributaries of both of these.
Old records indicate they came
as far up the Maumee River system
as the Ottawa River near Lima and
the Scioto River as far upstream as
Columbus.
Today, there are still small numbers of them present in Lake Erie but
none have been found in the Ohio
River since 1971. Much of their
decline is likely due to the numerous
dams that prevent them from reaching their spawning grounds.

tough one. ND has lost most of their team from last
year adding the suspended players from this year is
gonna be tough. ND cant decide on a starting QB
and are leaning towards a 2-QB system. Texas at
home is always a tough game for anyone, so sorry
Katie I know you are a fan but the Irish get beat.
Ole Miss at Florida State: Winner Florida
State, The matchup between Ole Miss QB and
FSU RB I think it will be a good game at the Citrus
Bowl which is always a tough place to play, so I
give the edge to FSU.
UCLA at Texas A&M: Winner UCLA, I started
out last year big on UCLA so I have to do it again

drought is over and the rivers start
to run, the run will begin again! You
can prepare by attending our meetings and our 23rd annual Steelhead

Ohio Central Basin Steelheaders
first meeting is at the Firehouse in
Willoughby Hills 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22.
Our scheduled speaker is Kevin
Kayle, the Hatchery Manager of
Ohio Fish Hatcheries, including the
Castalia Hatchery. Kevin always
keeps us up to date on the Steelhead
Program and the forecast for the
coming season. He is always informative regarding our fishery.
Through the efforts of the
ODNR, we will have fingerlings
stocked in our rivers this spring.
Kevin will bring us up to date about
our fishery. We certainly appreciate
the efforts Of the ODNR to provide
fish for next years stocking!
We help kick off our new
Steelhead season with our 23rd
O.C.B.S. Steelhead Expo. This year
we are again fortunate to be able

As well, Koenig had a
1-on-1 with Koester on the
right post and with the keeper
out, her 18-yarder hit the left
post and Koester got back to

The Jays had their best
efforts at 26:56, when
Hayleigh Bacome was
denied on an 18-yarder from
the right wing as T-Bird
netminder Madison Stolly
(3 saves) dove to deflect it
out of bounds; and at 13:34,
when Carleigh Ankerman
was denied from the top of

Baumgardner lofted a corner
kick from the left side and the
ball slipped out of Koesters

The Jays now had to rally
and very nearly tied it at
35 ticks; Bacome launched a
25-yarder from the right side
but hit the crossbar and the
Jays could not quite come up
with control to get another
look.
The Blue Jay defense did
a better job of limiting LCCs
offensive chances in the first
40 minutes, giving up only
this year. UCLA is picked to win the conference

South division and are led by a really good QB
with really talented WRs; look for them to get
started early.
LSU vs. Wisconsin at Lambeau Field: Winner
LSU, Lets face it they are one of the top teams
this year and have one of the top if not the best RB.
LSU has a new defensive coordinator to help that
already tough defense. LSU goes to Lambo and
beats the home team.
Georgia vs. North Carolina: Winner Georgia,
Georgia has their top RB back and healthy after
hurting his knee last year and NC has a new QB
starting. The Bulldogs win this one on the back
of their RB.
USC vs. Alabama: Winner Alabama, As much
as I want to not pick them and get Smoke all
worked up in the process, there is no way I can
(EN: I know what you mean!). Bama is too tough,
too deep and too talented. Bama wins easy.I

Reservoir to fill the marshes for the

early waterfowl season which opens
today.
The pumped marshes provide an
ideal habitat for migrating waterfowl
and shorebirds. Without the ability
to enhance the marsh with additional
water, waterfowlers and bird watchers that utilize this area may see
fewer birds and species.
We are hopeful the lake level will
rise in the coming weeks to allow us
to pump prior to the regular waterfowl season that opens in the south
zone on Oct. 22. Thank you for your

DELPHOS According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary ,the definition of unforced error is a missed shot or
point that is entirely a result of a players own mistake and not
because of the opponents skill or effort.
Unforced errosr could be better defined as something that
drives volleyball coaches crazy.
The Delphos St. Johns opponent on Thursday night was the
Indians of Fort Recovery in the Midwest Athletic Conference
opener for both squads.
The Indians swept the Lady Jays 25-18, 25-20, 25-15 and
snapped a modest 3-match winning streak for St. Johns.
The first set was closer than the final 25-18 score would
indicate as St. Johns trailed only 20-15 before the Indians
pulled away for the win.
The first points of set two for the Jays came on a kill by
Jessica Geise (16 digs, 6 kills, 5 aces), sparking St. Johns to
an early lead. After the Indians came back to take the lead,
Maddie Ellis (9 killsnotched a trio of cross-court slams to keep
the home team within a point. Ally Gerberick (4 kills) added
another kill by the Jays and a pair of errors by the Indians put
St. Johns back out front 9-8. The Indians then went on a 7-1
scoring outburst that included dropping in four serving aces
that fell between the Jays defenders. St. Johns went on a mini
3-0 run with kills from Hannah Bockey and Gerberick, along
with an Ellis tip. The set was tied at 18 as Ellis pulled the Jays
even with a pair of slams. Fort Recovery stepped up its performance with outstanding play at the net with a pair of kills and
two defensive blocks to win 25-20.
The Indians opened a 4-0 lead to begin the third set as the
Jays were unable to get a return over the net. Ellis made a
great defensive play against the Indians attack that led to a
kill by Bockey and Jana Hamilton added a serving ace as the
Jays cut the lead in half. The Blue Jays never led in this game
but did pull within 9-8 as Geise nailed a defensive block. The
Indians then outscored the Jays 6-0 before Geise ended the
Fort Recovery run with a slam. Both squads combined for
seven straight unforced errors until Ellie Csukker (11 digs, 9
assists) caught the Indians off guard with a soft tip that fell to
the floor. Then six more errors by both teams put the Indians
up 23-15 and Fort Recovery scored the final two points of the
night for the sweep.
Blue Jay coach Carolyn Dammeyer summed up the performance by her team as too many unforced errors. You cant
give up points to any team, especially a Midwest Athletic
Conference team, and expect to win. We will try to improve
and get better at practice with our serve/receive, serve/receive
drills.
Maya Gerker added 12 assists for the Lady Jays.
The Jays homestand continues today as St. Johns (3-2)
hosts Kenton of the Western Buckeye League at 10 a.m.

Jefferson moved the ball
as close as the Coldwater
12-yard line in the waning
moments of the first half
but two penalties and a sack
erased a scoring chance and
the game went to the half
with the visitors leading 14-6.
It was a good football
game. It was very physical.
We just came up a few plays
short. We had a few penalties here and there and we
couldnt quite get a defensive
stop - and they capitalized
on it. (Coldwater) is a great
team, and thats what great
teams do, said Sommers.
The shortest, and final,
scoring drive came less than
two minutes into the second
half. Thobe hit senior receiver Zach Klosterman for a
53-yard touchdown pass. A
missed extra point made the
score 20-6.
It was the high point of an
up-and-down night for Thobe
through the air. He connected on 8-of-19 attempts for
123 yards and a touchdown.
Thobes legs were the real
threat for Jefferson in the sec-
ond half, however. He piled

up 105 rushing yard on 20
carries, with 60 yards coming
in the second half.
The ground attack, which
was aided by Giere and junior
running back Seth Obringer,
piled up 106 second-half
yards and paired with the
stout Coldwater defense to
bring Jeffersons production
to a near-halt.
The Wildcats managed
only 57 second-half yards,
24 of which coming on one
Stockwell pass, which helped
the Cavaliers hold on for the
non-conference win.
The tale of the tape was
relatively close. Coldwater
totaled 320 yards, with 197
yards coming on the ground
in addition to Thobes passing total. Jefferson tallied 261
total yards.

Crystal Protsman, 22, Van Wert, admitted to violating her bond and Treatment in
Lieu program by failing to complete counseling at Westwood. She was sentenced to

Its amazing how the littlest thing can make a big

difference.
At my house, spoons and forks seem to grow
legs and walk off. We started out with this many and
soon, there were a few less and then after a while,
there were even less and then next thing you know,
I am washing silverware in between dishwasher
cycles to have enough in the drawer just for the two
of us.
One day, my husband and I were walking around
a store we frequent in Lima and he finds me and he
has something in his hands. Oh boy, I thought, he
found something. Is this going to be good or bad?
He shows me a set of forks and a set of spoons
that match not what we have at home, but each
other.
We need these, he says.
You are so right, I replied. We do need these.
We went home and popped them in the dishwasher and the next thing you know, my spoon and fork
slots in the silverware drawer were overflowing!
No more stressing out if we had enough if someone
came to dinner and no more telling everyone to keep
their forks at Thanksgiving otherwise they are eating
their pie with their fingers. (I know plastic forks and
spoons are perfectly OK, but I like to be a little more

formal.)
Now, I just reach in the drawer and there are
always spoons and forks available and I feel really
good about it. Apparently this was stressing me out
far more than I realized.
It was just like when we got our WiFi upgraded.
I do some work from home and in the past, getting
to the backside of The Herald web site from home
was challenging. I would turn the laptop on and
walk away. Come back and get Chrome up and the
URL in for the web site and walk away. Navigate
to the editorial section and walk away. This went
on for way too long for what I had to do. I walked
away A LOT! If I was just making a few clicks here
and there, it wasnt so bad.
The first time I did this after the new WiFi, I was
so happy I was almost giggling! Click, bam, there it
was! Click, bam, there it was!
Why hadnt we done this before?!?
Im sure there are more things that cause me
stress that could be taken care of easily enough if I
just think about it a little. Im not sure if I can top the
spoons and forks, though.
Its an eagle; I know its an eagle! I

shouted to myself as I crawled through a stand
of thorny shrubs that lined a high bluff over
Riley Creek. I pecked in the pesky passcode to
open the camera on my phone, tapped all the
not now options thrown at me and poised
to take a stunning photo that would surely go
viral across the social media universe before
sunset.
The silver cottonwood leaves parted and
out flew a majesticblue jay.
Years ago, I learned not to twist an ankle as
a red-tail hawk cries that Screen Gems-worthy
call along my running route. More times than
not, its a sassy indigo crested corvid mimickAnne Coburn-Griffis
ing the raptor. Blue jays around these parts
used to shriek, caw and bomb hawks who got
too close to their home trees. Now they just pretend to be another hawk.
I discovered last spring that hawks are no longer of key interest to blue jays.
They have bigger fish to fry, or mimic, in the majestic bald eagle. Although our
nations poster bird isnt all that uncommon, they are rarely seen enough that
a glimpse is cause to gasp. The opportunity to view one long enough to take a
photo to prove that, yes, you did so see a bald eagle earns one major bragging
rights.
It was concern for what I thought was a sickly bald eagle that I slid down the
muddy bank of the Riley one early morning this June. The poor bird was trying
its best to rasp out a rapid fire call, but could only manage a few click-shrieks
before its rhythm petered out like a bad drum solo. I landed, one foot in the
water with a backside smeared in mud, and came face-to-face with a blue jay.
It only took a summer of practice for those blue jays to perfect the call. One
fooled me again on Saturday morning. I did pause at the roadside, but saw the
jay before the sweat began to dry. Later that day, I heard the call again and fell
for it. This time, a huge white-capped, black cloaked raptor was the vocalist.
A little sheepishness is good for the soul, now and then. I have no recorded
proof as the eagle was there and gone downstream, but I know what I saw, and
heardthis time.
Kids viewpoint: Give me a chance

Just about all schools are now
open around the state and a mother
of several elementary school scholars stopped in this week to hand
us the following thoughts that she
would like all parents and teachers
to keep in mind when dealing with
little children. Its titled: A Childs
Requirements.
1. My hands are small; please
dont expect perfection whenever
I make my bed, draw a picture, or
throw a ball. My legs are short;
please slow down so that I can keep
up with you.
2. My eyes have not seen the
world as yours have; please let me
explore safely. Dont restrict me
unnecessarily.
3. Housework will always be
there. Im little for only a short
timeplease take time to explain
things to me about this wonderful
world, and do so willingly.
4. My feelings are tender; please
be sensitive to my needs; dont nag
me all day long. (You wouldnt
want to be nagged for your inquisitiveness). Treat me as you would
like to be treated.
5. I need your encouragement to
grow. Please go easy on criticism;
remember, you can criticize the
things I do without criticizing me.
6. Please give me the freedom to
make decisions concerning myself.

Permit me to fail, so that I can learn
from my mistakes. Then someday
Ill be prepared to make the kind of
decisions life requires of me.
7. Please dont do things over for
me. Somehow it makes me feel that
my efforts dont quite measure up to
your expectations. I know its hard,
but please dont try to compare me
with my brother or sister.
8. Please dont be afraid if you
and dad want to leave for a weekend together. Kids need vacations
from parents, just as parents need
vacations from kids. Besides, its a
great way to show us kids that your
marriage is very special!

With the increasingly alarming rate, our
communities are being affected by a nationwide heroin epidemic.
I recently spoke with a recovering addict
to get her firsthand point of view. Mary
Johnson (name has been changed) grew up in
a small town in what she calls an extremely
supportive and what some would consider
pretty cushy household. High school, said
Johnson, was amazing for her; she always
had a lot of friends and has always enjoyed
socializing.
I probably started drinking when I was
16 or so and it wasnt long after that, I would
smoke pot. Smoking weed led to me trying
mushrooms, ecstasy and acid. By the time I
was 18, I had done pretty much every drug
out there aside from opiates, Johnson said.
She said it might sound like denial, but she
was always able to do drugs recreationally.
I could do some blow at a party and not
want for it for another 6+ months, that sort of
thing, she said.
When she was 19, she decided to try
college, so she went to the University of
Michigan. Johnson said that lasted a year
because she was too interested in the social
scene and sleeping in than going to school.
She moved home and worked odds-and-ends
jobs. When she was 20, she met a guy from
Detroit. She moved in with him a month later.

the pastor with a cooler of water at
the end of the service.

During this political season,
candidates have been offering
ideas on how they would stimulate
Americas stagnate economy. Both
parties agree that something needs
to be done to get people working,
to get wage increases for the middle-class and to raise the standard of
living for 70 percent of Americans.
Democrat Hillary Clinton is calling for a massive infrastrucature
spending program, $275 billion
over five years, financed by a new
round of tax increases. There is no
doubt our roads and bridges are
crumbling. Most are in dire need

repair.
The trouble is, when politicians
get billions of dollars to spend on
what President Barack Obama once
called shovel-ready jobs, they want
to build brand new roads and bridges and forget about the crumbling
existing roads and bridges.
State officials are required to
prioritize their road projects. They
say there is a reason why they
lavish attention on their interstates.
Although they make up only 2.5
percent of the countrys lane miles,
interstates carry about a quarter of
its traffic, including much of the
heavy freight traffic.
Speeds are higher on interstates,
so the pavement needs to be in
better condition than city or state
roads to ensure a safe ride. States
devote about a third of their federal highway funds to interstates,
according to the Department of
Transportation. The DOT admits
that some 35 percent of non-interstate urban roads are in poor
condition.
At the same time, the public
doesnt want to pay higher gasoline
taxes. Those taxes are usually earmarked for maintenance of existing
infrastructure. So, while the available money goes to building even
more super highways, interchanges

and bridges, the existing infrastructure continues to deteriorate. As a
result, we have even more infrastructure to maintain with fewer tax
dollars.
Critics contend that government
stimulus programs rarely prime the
pump as promised and only add to
the state and national debts. The
programs are well-intentioned but
rarely move the needle in regards to
helping the struggling middle-class.
As might be expected, the top five
percent get wealthier as a result of
the spending.
I actually agree that we need
to commit to rebuilding Americas
infrastructure. Over time, it will
take several trillion dollars of
investments. The key will be keeping the projects focused on the
intended purpose and eliminating
the money wasted on bureaucracy,
red tape and misappropriation.
It probably wont be done but
wouldnt it be novel if these stimulus projects could be administered
without the gratuitous greasing the
outstretched palms of the political
go-betweens. Unfortunately, in government-run projects a few trillion
dollars doesnt buy what it used to.
And the middle-class will still be
looking for its fair share.
The story of an addict

Johnsons parents and friends were confused and devastated. After a few weeks
of living with this pretty much complete
stranger, Johnson discovered that the guy
was a hardcore heroin addict. Alone and
embarrassed, she didnt know what to do. She
felt trapped.
My decision to move so abruptly left
me feeling like I couldnt tell anyone what
was really going on, so I lied and faked as if
everything was going okay and that we were
making a life for ourselves in Detroit.
After almost a year of overdoses, physical
and mental abuse and insanity, Johnson gave
up and decided to show her boyfriend what
it was like to live with a drug addict. So she
tried heroin for the first time.
It was surreal how low I had put myself.
I didnt even recognize who I was anymore,
she said.
This was not the life her parents, friends,
family or she had envisioned. By the time she
was 21, Johnson was a full-blown, need-touse-every-day addict with no morals left.
Things took a turn.
Divine intervention occurred and this
guy got arrested, giving my parents a chance
to swoop in and rescue me, Johnson said.
For two years, they tried everything from
methadone clinics, therapy, lockdowns at
their house, tough love.
Turner said she would go a couple months

clean and then relapse.
I could never make it past two months
without going back out breaking everyones
hearts for the millionth time, she said.
When she was 24, Johnson reconnected
with a boy whom she had always had a crush
on. To everyone, it seemed that things were
finally starting to turn around. She would
still use occasionally on the weekends, but
thought she had it under control and that she
was getting away with it. After about a year,
she moved to Ann Arbor with her boyfriend.
Within two months, she was using more than
shed ever used in her life.
Johnson said she was spending every
penny she made on dope. Conniving, stealing,
doing whatever she could to feed her addiction. She said her lifestyle was killing her and
every relationship she had.
Josh (name has been changed) and I
were fighting every day, my parents were so
depressed they couldnt even come see me,
sleep or enjoy their lives,Johnson said.
She had just turned 25 in September and a
few days after her birthday, she overdosed for
the third time. Her boyfriend Josh found her
in the apartment. Luckily, she survived.
This being the final straw for everyone,
we broke up. I moved home and went through
the most excruciating detox ever. I slowly
began to piece my life back together. I went to

meetings, began to make amends to my parents, reconnected with my old real friends and
began the long journey of building shattered
trust, Johnson said.
Days turned into sober weeks and sober
weeks turned into months. After getting many
sober months under her belt, Johnson made
the decision to fulfill her dream of becoming
a nurse. She enrolled in school in September
and is pursuing her passion.
I pass tests with As, have the trust and
love of my parents, have self-gratification,
respect from my friends and family. And for
the first time maybe ever, I can say every
aspect of my life is good. I actually have a
future, Johnson said. And I got my boyfriend back! It has been a long, hard road, to
say the least, but today life is good!
Johnson will soon be celebrating four
years sober from all opiates.
I dont want to jinx myself, Johnson
said. Addiction is a wicked, terrifying thing.
Im not saying Im fixed or safe. I sometimes will have dreams about using or catch
myself fantasizing about it. But whats keeping me going strong is knowing that I dont
have to use. And regardless, Ive come a hell
of a long way from where I was.

The Museum of Postal History will

focus on correspondence during the war.
Letters from Home and Letters From the
Front will cast a light on the lives and emotions of those directly involved in the war.
Of special interest will be the militarys
use of Victory Mail or V-mail to economically and efficiently transport letters to and
from all parts of the world. The museum
will also debut its new Holocaust exhibit
at this time.
Both the museums are seeking local
artifacts and items for the exhibits. Of
interest are letters to and from soldiers

and other items sent through the US Postal
Service during or after the war.
The Canal Museum is seeking photos,
uniforms, medals, posters, ration books,
buttons and signs anything dealing with
life during World War II, both on the front
lines and on the home front.

exhibit or for more information, contact

The exhibits at both museums will jointly debut on Sunday, Dec. 4.

nearly 4,000-square-foot
splash pad with 29 unique
water features is $350,000
with a targeted completion
date for summer 2017.
This is the single largest
and most aggressive project

the club has undertaken.
The club has the support
of the city administration
and the Parks & Recreation
Department. The club has
provided $25,000 seed
money for the project from
proceeds from fundraisers in 2015. The Arnold
C. Dienstberger Foundation
has awarded a grant of
$50,000 towards the project as well as $40,000 from
the Canal Days Committee.
Individuals, businesses and
other organizations have
also contributed.
The total raised far is
$186,000.

For those attempting to take care of
themselves during these times, the brochures for the group outline ways to care
for oneself. The brochure recommends
distracting oneself with activities such
as reading, watching movies or going on

walks. It encourages people to exercise,
eat healthy, and maintain proper sleeping
habits. Additionally, those suffering from
a loss are advised to talk with friends or a
counselor.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m.
on Sept. 15, there is no fee for attendance.

What we need is the personal stories about events in

Delphos, Kaverman said.
Desenberg, who has
taught history for 39 years
and is currently at St. Johns
High School, noticed something in his classrooms.
We teach about all the
historical events everyone knows and my students dont have any idea
about their local history,
he said. They dont know
the stories and the events
that made their people who
they are. It needs to be
exposed.
Kaverman said the book
will include as comprehensive a report as possible
and will likely take several
years to write.
We need to hear from
people about the railroad,
agriculture,
business,
organizations,
churches, schools, the parks,
local sports; anything
that pertains to Delphos,
Kaverman said.
All involved have a history with Delphos and its
outlying areas and their
names are familiar in the
ranks at the local museums,

Several attempts to contact him were made for him to

come out peacefully with no avail, the police department
reported.

At some point the male jumped from the second story window and was detained.
Morgan was transported to the Van Wert County Hospital
by EMS after he complained his leg was hurt.
After he was released from the Emergency Room, he
was served an affidavit and arrested for violation of a
protection order. Since Morgan had a previous conviction
of the same, this charged upgraded to a felony of the fifth
degree.
Morgan was taken to the Van Wert Correctional Facility
until his initial arraignment in Municipal Court.
The Van Wert Police Department did confiscate a handgun, a substance suspected to be cocaine, marijuana and
money.
The narcotics will be sent to the Ohio BC&I lab for
testing. Once the investigation is complete the case will be
handed over to the Prosecutors office for additional charges
to be presented to grand jury.
The Van Wert County Sheriff and the Ohio State
Highway Patrol assisted the Police department with containing the outer perimeter during the execution of the
search warrant.
