In1909,MichioSuzuki(18871982)foundedtheSuzukiLoom
WorksinthesmallseacoastvillageofHamamatsu,Japan.
BusinessboomedasSuzukibuiltweavingloomsforJapan's
giantsilkindustry.[8]In1929,MichioSuzukiinventedanew
typeofweavingmachine,whichwasexportedoverseas.The
company'sfirst30yearsfocusedonthedevelopmentand
productionofthesemachines.

Despitethesuccessofhislooms,Suzukibelievedthathis
companywouldbenefitfromdiversificationandhebeganto
lookatotherproducts.Basedonconsumerdemand,hedecided
HeadquartersinHamamatsu
thatbuildingasmallcarwouldbethemostpracticalnew
venture.Theprojectbeganin1937,andwithintwoyears
Suzukihadcompletedseveralcompactprototypecars.These
firstSuzukimotorvehicleswerepoweredbyatheninnovative,liquidcooled,fourstroke,fourcylinderengine.It
hadacastaluminumcrankcaseandgearboxandgenerated13horsepower(9.7kW)fromadisplacementofless
than800cc.
WiththeonsetofWorldWarII,productionplansforSuzuki'snewvehicleswerehaltedwhenthegovernment
declaredcivilianpassengercarsa"nonessentialcommodity."Attheconclusionofthewar,Suzukiwentbackto
producinglooms.LoomproductionwasgivenaboostwhentheU.S.governmentapprovedtheshippingofcotton
toJapan.Suzuki'sfortunesbrightenedasordersbegantoincreasefromdomestictextilemanufacturers.Butthejoy
wasshortlivedasthecottonmarketcollapsedin1951.
Facedwiththiscolossalchallenge,Suzukireturnedtotheproductionofmotorvehicles.Afterthewar,theJapanese
hadagreatneedforaffordable,reliablepersonaltransportation.Anumberoffirmsbeganoffering"clipon"gas
poweredenginesthatcouldbeattachedtothetypicalbicycle.Suzuki'sfirsttwowheeledvehiclewasabicycle
fittedwithamotorcalled,the"PowerFree."Designedtobeinexpensiveandsimpletobuildandmaintain,the
1952PowerFreehada36cc,onehorsepower,twostrokeengine.[9]Thenewdoublesprocketgearsystemenabled
theridertoeitherpedalwiththeengineassisting,pedalwithoutengineassist,orsimplydisconnectthepedalsand
runonenginepoweralone.ThepatentofficeofthenewdemocraticgovernmentgrantedSuzukiafinancialsubsidy
tocontinueresearchinmotorcycleengineering.
By1954,Suzukiwasproducing6,000motorcyclespermonthandhad
officiallychangeditsnametoSuzukiMotorCo.,Ltd.Followingthe
successofitsfirstmotorcycles,Suzukicreatedanevenmoresuccessful
automobile:the1955SuzukiSuzulight.TheSuzulightsoldwithfront
wheeldrive,fourwheelindependentsuspensionandrackandpinion
steering,whichwerenotcommononcarsuntilthreedecadeslater.
Volkswagenhelda19.9%noncontrollingshareholdinginSuzukibetween
2009and2015.AninternationalarbitrationcourtorderedVolkswagento
