SHERIDAN: THE WHOLE SECOND AMENDMENT, AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED, IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

John Byrne is encouraging Republican voters in the 116th Assembly District to listen to his opponents
shocking comments on our constitutional right to bear arms and the overreaching SAFE Act.
Bill Sheridan said in a Friday interview on WATN 1240 AMs Hotline radio show: It was tried to be
construed by John Byrne that I was not a complete supporter of the SAFE Act. If that wasnt disturbing
enough, Sheridan later said: My contention is: No, the whole Second Amendment, as far as Im
concerned, is unconstitutional. (Hear here: https://soundcloud.com/newzjunky/sheridan-i-want-totalreform-of-the-safe-act)
These startling comments come on the heels of Sheridans comments during the Shooters Committee
on Political Education (SCOPE) endorsement meeting Sept. 1. When asked by a sportsman if he would
support a repeal of the SAFE Act for residents outside of New York City, Sheridan replied:
I believe we enforce the laws we have on the books right now, whether youre in New York City
or youre up in Harrisville or youre in Canton. Those laws are already on the books to take care
of those people, whether it be in New York City or upstate New York. Im a strong believer in
equal rights. I dont want New York City getting one set of rules and we having to deal with
another set of rules.
Byrne noted that Sheridan has now expressed complete support of the SAFE Act as well as support of
its repeal sometimes in a single conversation! His opponent has also said the Second Amendment is
unconstitutional and that he recognizes the importance of Second Amendment rights.
Being charitable to my opponent, Id say: Bill Sheridan has a hard time explaining clearly to voters
where he stands on some very important issues, said Byrne. Frankly, if he believes the Second
Amendment is unconstitutional, thats troubling and also shows a complete lack of understanding about
the founding principles of our country.
Byrne rejected Sheridans equal rights argument, noting that New York City and upstate New York
have all sorts of different laws. Byrne pointed to the minimum wage hike as the most recent example
where upstate interests rejected downstate lawmakers desire to overpay low-skilled workers to the
detriment of small business growth.
Bill Sheridan is against repealing the SAFE Act upstate, which means hed rather this obvious
government impingement on our gun rights to stand unaltered in the name of fairness, said Byrne. I
could not disagree more. Assemblyman Marc Butler has introduced common sense legislation that
would free law abiding upstate sportsmen from the egregious burdens of Governor Cuomos signature
anti-gun legislation. My opponent would rather see business as usual. I support Assemblyman Butlers
efforts and would be a consistent voice for north country interests in Albany not those of downstate.
Byrne, an Army veteran and a small business owner, is the endorsed candidate of the New York State
Conservative, Independence and Reform parties. He lives in Cape Vincent with his wife and daughter.
