Story Telling Workshop

On the 1st of September,Pratham Gujarat did a Story Telling Workshop. Around 25 participants
from the variousadministrations were present. These members represented from ICDS Anganwadis
the ECE (Early Childhood Education) Coordinators, Supervisors from Ahmedabad district,
Ahmedabad city and Baroda city, private NGOs and members from Prathms different programs. We
had Ms.ShefaliNayan, an artist by profession, also an active member and participant of Pratham
Books One Day One Story campaign.

The aim of the workshop was to create an interest among the participants for Stories so
that the team and children whom they associated with get the benefit of the same.

The different topics around the stories were discussed, presented and connected with the
experiences of the participants. The topics were,

The discussions have included the demonstration of stories, how each story form has its own
importance for the listeners, the difference between stories to pre-schoolers and older children, the
various activities related to story by considering the age group and on the kind of stories humour,
art, culture, fairy tells, folk tells.

The ambience at the workshop venue was set up giving us


feeling of being part of the story treasure. The range of
Pratham books were displayed with beautiful handmade story
characters, props and puppets designed by Pratham ECE
teachers.Participants were given exposure to different Pratham
books by showing and explaining the importance of text and
illustrations, and associated activities.

Story related activities were discussed in detail-how it helps in retention of the story and how it
helps in building memory power. Hands on experience foractivities were available for all
participants, where they experienced,

Questioning after story questions based on story - fact driven and critical questions based
on story

This part of the workshop has given them the good fun. The participants got so much engrossed
which helped us to review their half way responses for the workshop.

Key moments of the workshop occurredwhen participants related their


experiences with the on-going discussions of the stories. Some
experiences were,
- Story has become the way of connection with the children
when I entered new in the field of Anganwadi, shared by one of the
Anganwadi ECE coordinator.
- A personal experience with the Storys
importance for independent writing has come
out from one of the Prathams coordinator.

One of the supervisors of the Anganwadi has communicated that, how through stories;
children of different communities got awareness regarding diverse religious festivals,
values.

At the end of the workshop Pratham books campaign One day


one story was shared with participants and were invited to join
the campaign
Written feedback was collected in which most participants have
shown their keen interest to attend these kind workshops in the
future as well.
