In 1965, UNESCO declared September 8th to be International Literacy Day.
Since this proclamation, schools, communities and organizations have united
around the world on this day to raise awareness in the hope that it will
enable increased accessibility to education in developing nations.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day and
UNESCO is celebrating it under the banner Reading the Past, Writing the
Future. International Literacy Day 2016 celebrates and honours the past five
decades of national and international engagement, efforts and progress
made to increase literacy rates around the world. It also addresses current
challenges and looks to innovative solutions to further boost literacy in the
future.

Delhi Public School heralds and disseminates awareness about literacy and
its wider significance in our competitive world by reaching
the unreached. In order to attain this prime objective,
students were ignited to read various forms of genres during
the Read Program periods being conducted on all Mondays.
Concurrently, in order to mark the International Literacy Day,
students were exposed to the world of fiction under the title
The Elephant Bird for all the three class I, II and III.

Activities conducted by the Grades

Class I

Students of grade 1 were encouraged to read and

listen to story being read to them and engage in
other literacy activities such as the children
described the same story as an enactment and
they also made a pen holder with the help of
chart paper with an elephant face fixed on it and
moreover they came out with imaginative ideas
too.
It was wonderful to see
such enthusiasm from everyone. Children understood
the true meaning to Literacy Day and importance of
learning in their life.

CLASS II
At the outset, the teacher read out the story loudly so as to elicit and infer
the underlying theme of the story. On the basis of their comprehension, the
students drew their favorite character of this story on an A-4 size chart.
Thereafter, each child came up to the dais and shared their views about the
story.

Class III
On the occasion of World Literacy Day, we started our
day with a wonderful activity, Bookmark making we
also wrote quotes on reading book. The bookmark was
decorated by feathers. Children were briefed about the
importance of reading a book; the only tool for
development of language.

Followed by it we blind folded the children

and they had to correctly match the feather
on the bird figure drawn on the chart.

Lastly we
depicted the play on the story of the
Elephant Bird. It is an ancient, huge bird
creature and only one surviving in the forests
of Adhania. As it was a beautiful story which
the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Thus, the World Literacy Day was mark for our children with significance of
literacy and getting rid of ignorance.
