The music of the xxth century has permi tted a considerable .ideningof tlJe notion of musicality,
which can be
seen not only in the greater utilization of percussion
or
the appearance of electronics, but also in the remarkable
development of instrumental techniques.
Conspious of the necessity to know instruments
in
more depth in order to serve a new mode of expression,
we
have been researching since 1969 on transverse flutes.
Following a first unpublished version, finished in
1971, we present with this edition a new version of our
study, completely revised in the light of our recent work.
This edition limits itself to exposing the present state
of our current research, and en account of this, we have
deliberately
left aside, for the moment, certain aspects
which h'e would like to study in more deptll and concerning
whid) we shall eventually publish a second volume.
In the last eight years, an extraerdinary
repertoire
tor the instruments of the flute family has come into being,
and rare instruments, such as the bass flute, are becoming
more and more common. This shows, if indeed
is necessary,
the profound interest of present day creators for these instruments and how well the latter can adapt to fit the needs
of contemporary musical expression.
it
The flute is perhaps one of the most widespread instruments today, and the appearance of its new repertoire
necessi tates new teaching techniques which can provide a .
rrore thorough approach to instrumental
technique, w1 thout
however repudiating the attainments of the pasto
It was therefore particularly
important to publish
this text now,
in arder to put a rational toal at the
disposition of players and composers.

in this way.
Indeed apart from the fact that this
notation is currently in use by flautists,
it is the only notation which enables to
judge relative pitch range, and this is a
fundamental parameter influencing tone qualit Y and the limits of playing possibility.

This sound can be obtained by blowing on
the mouthpiece,
turning the mouthpiece
well
away frem the lips (very "open" cf. ch.IB,

acoustical phenomenon
of bevel-noise

whistle, which reinforces
one of
the par tial sounds to the detriment of the
rest of the sound spectrum.
