Painful death
for Pype Hayes
Pool creatures
A three-foot long eel gasps for oxygen at the waters
edge of Pype Hayes pool.

The creatures sickeningly white eyes bear witness to the excruciating torment it has suffered. Eels live and feed on the bottom of pools. Starved of
oxygen, this creature desperately seeks fresh water near the surface edge.
It is minutes away from death. Despite the efforts of experts to pump oxygenated water into the pool, most fish and creatures in the lake are feared
dead.
The culprit is blue/green algae that soaks up all the oxygen. Specks of algae
can be seen all around this dying eel. Some say the algae growth has been
helped by yeast from white bread thrown to feed ducks and their chicks. The
bread-givers meant well, but may inadvertently have caused harm. Dozens
of fish, including bream of up to six pounds in weight, have been found
dead, floating on the surface.
Crayfish, tench and perch have also perished.

FOR LOVE
OF JACK

Jack Clark has inspired

his parents, family and
friends to raise thousands
of pounds for a medical
charity.

Faced with a crippling incurable illness the bright-eyed bonny boy has
seen family and friends move heaven
and earth - and mud - to fund research into the deadly disease.
Marc and 60 of his friends took on
a tough-mudder challenge to raise
10,000 earlier this year.
He has also organised family days,
and a bake-off to help with the fundraising.
Theyve massed over 30,000 for
Duchenne UK charity, thanks to kindhearted folk from various local clubs
and organisations.
Jaguar workers, the Skylark fishing
club, Castle Vale Residents Club, the
patrons at St Gerards, and many local
individuals have made huge contributions.
Jack suffers from Duchenne Muscular
Dystrophy, an incurable ailment that
means he needs physiotherapy twice
a day.
Mom Anna, and Dad, Marc, a former
pupil at St Gerards School and Castle
Vale Comp, reckons that young Jack
will need a wheelchair in a few years
time.

Severn Trent calls on customers to be hydrant heroes as they tackle the

standpipe bandits

In a bid to reduce discolouration in water for its customers, Severn Trent has
today launched a clampdown on illegal
use of its 300,000 fire hydrants across
the Midlands.
Since the start of 2016, the company
has successfully investigated 50 instances of the illegal use of Severn
Trent hydrants with many of these investigations leading to formal cautions
or even criminal prosecutions. Severn
Trent is now calling on its customers to
be its eyes and ears by keeping a lookout for unauthorised use that can lead
to discoloured water for thousands of
homes and businesses.
And, to make it easier to spot illegal
use, Severn Trent has joined forces
with Aquam Water Services to make
sure that all authorised standpipes are
painted bright green and feature the
Severn Trent and Aquam logos.
Dan Littlewood, water fittings senior technician at Severn Trent, said:
Companies and individuals that use
our hydrants illegally can cause significant problems, including discolouration
in our customers water because they
simply dont care about what their actions might result in.
When we work with official users of
our hydrants, which range from fire
and rescue services to housebuilders,
we make sure theyre aware that they
can have a very real impact on our customers lives and we can educate them
on how to use them properly.
For us, water quality is an absolute
priority so we really need everyone to
become a hydrant hero and keep an
eye out for anyone using an illegal
standpipe because it could be your water theyre affecting.
If anyone sees someone they believe is
using an illegal standpipe from a Severn Trent hydrant:
Dont approach them;
Note down where they are and when
it is;
Make a note of the details of the vehicle;
Take a picture showing the vehicle
and the standpipe attached if you can
do it safely; and then
Send the detail to severntrentwater@

St Edmund Campion School celebrated its 40th anniversary with a reunion

this month.

Guest of Honour was the schools first headteacher, Louis Loughran, now in his eighties.
He was absolutely amazing, said Gary Smart,
Campions Business Manager and School Gover-

nor.
He was so vibrant and full of memories and stories about the school.
Mr Loughran was joined at the celebrations by former colleague Peter Bird, who was deputy headteacher at the school for over 30 years from the
1970s onwards.
Around 250 guess, mostly former pupils and staff,

enjoyed tours of the school, a Mass with the Archbishop of Birmingham, and a barbeque in the
evening.
Pictures above, from left are: the schools first
headteacher, Louis Loughran; current headteacher Philomena Steele; former deputy headteacher
Peter Bird; and a former pupil of the school.

In addition to the new standpipes,

Severn Trent has also been busy fitting
tens of thousands of new locking caps
to the hydrants which can only be unlocked with special equipment.
To date, more than 30,000 locking caps
have been fitted across the network.

LETTERS poo bags to
Learning the hard irresponsible
way, the difficulties dog owners

of being disabled

It has been an interesting

experience since I had to
give up driving.
For better or worse (friends and
neighbours would say worse!) I acquired a motorised chair and it is manoeuvred by a joystick.
Some of my experiences and comments are as follows.
1. The Vale is supposed to be flat but
all I can say that there are many uneven slabs about and many tree roots
near the surface and one has to be
careful negotiating them.
2. I have appreciated the kindness of
drivers either slowing down or allowing me to cross safely - many thanks.
I think especially of Innsworth Drive

which has a lot of traffic on it.

3. I have learnt to leave the chair out
side the doctors
The other week I didnt get out quick
enough and my hand was caught in
the doorway and badly shredded.
The doctors acted promptly and got
me to Good Hope in an ambulance.
The doctors and nurses there stitched
the skin together and at present the
healing is excellent - no skin graft required!
4 I have fallen over in my chair and
on one occasion bruised my shoulder and lay helpless in the road for a
few moments before a lovely couple
stopped their car, picked me up and
sent me on my way - many, many
thanks to them if they read this.

Boys in blue: two smart, cool and

relaxed young men: Cole Bennett and
Liam Hykin, Greenwood Academy pupils

5. I have appreciated being able to

get out and about on the estate.
I have appreciiated the green, green
grass, the mural at St. Gerards of Jesus with little children in His arms,
seeing all the foundations of the new
school on Farnborough road,
6. Last but by no means least my
lovely wife Joan for recharging the
battery and her care and consideration for my safety and well-being.
Life is far from dull and with all the
different scooters and mobility units
we shall soon have to form a club or
something!
David Townsend

My wife and I have acquired a beautiful young

dog and accepted all the
responsibilities that goes
with owning a dog, including the requirements of
the City Council in regards
to picking up the animals
waste.
Since I have the luxury of walking my
dog three or four times a day I see
many owners with their dogs waiting
until the animal has finished doing its
toilet then walking off as if their dog
has not done anything.
I did once offer a man a black poo
bag after standing literally a few yards
away while his dog done what it had
to do, and I must state, his dog was
on the big side, only to be given the
two fingers.
I find that the responsibilities of own-

ing a dog are in the hands of its owners, what would they say or do if
another owners dog done it on their
patch, we all know the health risks
only too well if a dogs waste is left on
the pavement or in the green areas
where kiddies play.
People who own dogs know what the
law states, some tend to ignore it,
others abide with it, and the old saying is Its always the few who spoil it
for the majority.
I will continue to offer poo bags to
those owners who think its beyond
them to do anything so disgusting,
but they own a dog and all its requirements, so I reckon they should be
held for it.
Where are the wardens who are supposed to lay down the law regarding
dogs?

Nightwear for day wear
has always been a trend
that hasnt gotten very
far. Its always made a brief appearances over the years but I have
never seen it have an influence like it
has the past few weeks. For example, girls were spotted a lot last year
rocking the trend, even at prestigious
events such as Anya Ziourova at Milan fashion week SS15 and now it has
made a come back!
Bloggers are particularly favouring

long sleeved, black, collared pyjama

shirts with white lining and a fairly
low neckline. These shirts are then
tucked into blue, high-waisted, ankle
grazer jeans and paired with black
killer silhouettes while then keeping accessories minimal with a small
clutch bag.
It also looks like there has been an
adaptation of night dresses into cami
tops. You can now buy lightweight
camis with v-necks decorated with
a lace panel and shoe string straps.
Again, these would look great with

from the
Missdirected
collection
skinny jeans and chic heels.
Bloggers and Instagram stars have
been going crazy for this latest trend.
Its a great twist on your usual smartcasual style and its a bit more fun
and unique. It must also be super
comfy to be walking around in your

pyjamas all day and looking chic while

doing it is just an added bonus!
You can find these tops for under 30
at New Look in a mix palette of colours, ranging from deep, dark shades
to Summer pastels... or you could just
look in your pyjama draw.

325 duty of care statutory demand

59 fixed penalty notices (300 fines)
were issued to firms that failed to do so
140 fixed penalty notices (80 fines)
were issued for littering offences
caused by business or household waste
107 notices were issued under the
Prevention of Damage by Pests Act,
which require the removal of rubbish
that is likely to harbour rats
8 notices requiring the removal of flytipped or noxious matter
2,866 statutory notices were issued
to householders for waste presentation
offences, most of which related to contaminated recycling (eg non-recyclable

way to keep fit.

Keep off the Playstations and X boxes,

and get out the skipping rope. Thats
what children at Gunter Primary
School did to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
The energetic pupils enjoyed a variety
of skipping activities throughout the

day in their fund-raising funday.

Everyone enjoyed trying new skipping skills, as well as learning about
heart disease, one of Britains biggest
killers, and that keeping fit helps to
promote healthier lives, said headteacher Lucy Riley.
We raised a staggering 538.21, of
which 80% goes to the British Heart
Foundation and the other 20% to

school.
School Council are looking to purchase outdoor equipment for physical
activities to use during playtime with
the schools 107.
Gunter Primary School has been promoting healthier living throughout the
year, by having healthy school meals
and plenty of fun, active afterschool
clubs.

Sorry....no apologies

Brookly
Taylor
Tyburn Mails

Beyonce is here, people,

with Lemonade.

She has shot straight into

this summer with her sweet
and sour album.
As usual Beys music screams independent woman!
But this album is full of sass, just
what us ladies need this summer to
make us all feel like Queen Bs.
Sorry is the first song shes released
onto YouTube with a music video.
This album is feisty, and full of the
sass all women need in their lives, or
even men!
Theres many rumours. Rumours that

its based on Jay Z cheating on Beyonce, but we all know that couldnt
possibly be true.
Would Jay Z cheat on this Queen?
Definitely not, and if so, then this
song is enough to put him into his
place.
As Bey flaunts her gorgeous figure,
and dances around happily.
Regardless of whether or not the rumours are true, this first song is brilliant.
I believe it represents black culture so
well, which is good, especially with
the race issues in America.
She looks flawless in all of the outfits,
and trendy hair styles, and I am infatuated with this!
This is definitely a hit for the summer,
something for all of us to be sassy to.
If youre feeling Beyonce this summer, then say it with me.
Tell em boy, bye.
Enjoy Lemonade, both kinds that is.
Indulge this summer!

Gardner in
the garden
West Brom star makes dream day
extra special for footie-mad Oliver

It must be every young football fans dream to have their

back garden turned into a mini-football pitch.
How about making that pitch a
perfect, level, soft, all-weather
pitch with netted goals at both
ends?
And how about your Dad and older
brother coming out for a game with
you?

And everyone wears their brand

new West Bromwich Albion shirt for
2016/7 season.
That sounds like a dream come true
for 9 years old Baggies fan Oliver
Rock.
BUT WAIT... THERES MORE TO COME.
A knock at the garden gate, and in
walks a Premier League football star
to join in the game.
It couldnt be...... it is... YESSSS, IT IS
Its Albion midfield star Craig Gardner.

The man who can smash the ball goalwards from 35 yards out.
He used to play for Villa, but the Baggies called, and he moved up the road
to The Hawthorns.
And now hes here in Olivers back garden, giving him a few coaching tips.
The dream really did happen for Oliver
Rock in his home in Castle Vale. The Topcliffe School pupil was granted his wish by
the Rays of Sunshine Charity.
They got the great guys from Phoenix
Lawns to lay the astroturf, and the Phoenix
team took the wish a stage further by inviting Craig Gardner along for the opening
footie session.
Mum Amanda and big brother Dylan
watched from the sidelines, while Dad David, 11 year-old brother Oscar who plays
for Castle Vale Town, and Premier ace Craig
Gardner tested out the new pitch with a
good old kick-around.
It got the thumbs-up from everyone, especially from Oliver, who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Amanda said they want to raise awareness
for research into the crippling Duchenne
disease.
We also want to say a massive thank you
to the charity and also to Phoenix Lawns for
doing this.

KAYS HISTORY

Hunter who lectures on his subject in Birmingham and West

The Montefaucon
Gallows machine
First built in 1233, the
montefaucon gallows
was a gruesome structure, used as a gibbet
on a massive scale.
This stone construction was located at the top of a small hill
near the modern Place-du-Colonel Fabien in Paris. Having three
sides with forty five compartments, which were accessed by
a ladder, whereby felons could
be gibbeted after execution.
After being hanged the bodies
were left as a grim warning to
the towns people. There were
sometimes eighty corpses, decomposing which would eventually disintegrate and fall into the
walled enclosure at its base.
The Montefaucon Gallows was
last used in 1629, and finally demolished in 1760.

Erdingtons new leisure

centre is a sign of the times.
The plans look superb.
A magnificent swimming
pool and fitness studio,
and a host of other facilities are on their way.
It will cost 8 million to
build, and will need to run
at a profit.
The council can no longer afford to run
sport and leisure centres as they used
to. So the new centre will be privately
run by an organisation called Birmingham Community Leisure Trust.
Cutbacks over a period of years mean
that the old baths and pool in Masons
Road will close.
Its part of a harsh lesson in austerity.
Councils have had to shrink and provide less than they used to.
Some say that councils should provide
subsidised services, so that all people,
rich and poor, get a chance to enjoy
decent facilities.
Others feel that its about time that
councils were told to face up to the
sort of financial accountability that
private business and industry always
lives by.
If an industry goes into the red, it
faces closure, and its employees face
redundancy.
Erdington District ran itself into the
red... to the tune of over 1 million
over a few years, and nothing seemed
to be done about it.
A couple of councillors made the right
noises at district meetings, but mostly
the deficit was seen as an embarrassment but not a disaster.
Then came the countrys financial
crash in 2008, and central government
imposed harsh cutbacks on local councils.
Castle Pool has found its own solution
to this problem.
That pool would be closed by now, except for the dedication of unpaid volunteers.
That is what ex Prime Minister David
Cameron meant by The Big Society.
Its an almost forgotten scheme of his.
He foresaw that councils would face
cutbacks under his Chancellor George
Osborne.
So communities either run their own
facilities, or lose them.
Or private business steps in and runs
them at a profit.
Work on the Erdington Leisure Centre
started this month, on the very day
that David Cameron stepped down as
Britains Prime Minister.

Castle Vale is a great place to live.
The Community Pledge is a new long term
commitment to Castle Vale.

STAY
PUT

Our Community Manager; Jon

has been working with the
West Midlands Fire Service
as a way to test peoples understanding of our Stay Put
Policy, and recently carried
out a joint fire drill one evening
at Chivenor House.
We had either a member of
CVCH or WMFS on every
floor, so when the fire alarm
was sounded, we were able
to identify anyone who tried to
leave their property. For those
who tried to leave their flat, we
explained it was a fire drill and
reminded them of the stay put
policy.
Following on from this we
have now arranged a meeting
with all residents of Chivenor

the stay put policy and to raise
their awareness of fire safety.

We will survey around 20% of homes, to
give us a good sample of each type of
property owned by CVCH.
Specific addresses will be chosen for the
surveyors to visit and these tenants will
be notified in due course

Should your home be selected as part

of the 20% sample, we would kindly ask
that you allow the surveyor access to the
various parts of your home; including
gardens and outbuildings that he/she
will need to inspect. For those homes
with a loft, these will also be checked for
the correct level of insulation.

If you should have any questions or concerns about this exercise, please contact Richard Chapman, on 0121 748 8127
who will be more than happy to discuss these with you.

Our CCTV Service has received an excellent audit from SSAIB. There has
been a great deal of challenge to the team over the
past year and this is a credit
to them and the fact that
the service is recognised in
such a way one of the few
in the country.
It also means that this accreditation can be used to
grow the business and service as we can use it to underpin the excellent provision of CCTV on Castle Vale
which goes towards living
in a safer community with a
landlord that cares.

WIFI is here

We have been working in partnership with Community UK to provide free WIFI to all of our tenants,
this project has taken a lot of planning, network
design and partnership working to ensure tenants
are connected and have access to a fantastic free
service.
We are pleased to announce residents in Topcliffe
& Chivenor House now have access to our free

WIFI service, these 2 blocks form the main infrastructure to the network; work will now continue to
install equipment in homes and low rise blocks to
ensure this service is available across the estate.
Dont forget you can access free WIFI in our hotspots across Centre 8 including Centre Park!

POLES
APART

Forget sexy pole-dancingthis is serious aerial-fitness

How does she do that?
Karen Gaunt, superhuman

Karen and Laura hang upside

down from a chrome pole in
their Castle Vale gym studio.
Their toned muscles tighten as they stretch
their limbs, feet and arms to a perfect bodyshape. For several seconds they stay stunningly still in a seemingly impossible position.
These two are champions in pole fitness.
They won gold in the pole doubles at the
IPAAT (International Pole and Aerial Tournament) in Nottingham last month.

Karen Gaunt, with her business partner

Gail Robinson, run courses for the public at
their AddictiveFitness studios at the Enterprise Park off Park Lane in Castle Vale. The
classes are becoming really popular. They
have helped women to lose weight, and to
increase their body confidence, says Karen.
When they first come, some people are
afraid to put their gym kit on. But after a few
sessions, theyre ready to try a new move.
Karen says that pole fitness is a great way
of losing weight because the challenges are
addictive. People on our courses try one
move and then they want to go one better. So when they go home, they watch
their diet so that they have a better
chance of getting even better on the
poles and hoops. One woman in her 20s
lost four stone in just eight months.
You become competitive with yourself
and that encourages you to take on a
healthier lifestyle and better diet, says
Karen.
They often get booked for hen parties
- the ladies have a go at the pole tasks
before going out for a fun night out.
They run classes for youngsters from 5
upwards, using hoops in place of poles.
And there are a few brave males, too.
Circuit training and aerial yoga and silks
are all part of the menu at the studios.

New boss steps up

comment from pupil to Ofsted

recent inspection

Its all change at the top

of Erdington Hall Primary School after their
best ever Ofsted report.
Headteacher Carol Phillips has been promoted
up the ladder and now
takes on a more senior
role in the Ninestiles
Trust.
That paves the way for
deputy principal Richard Simcox to move into
the hotseat. He took

over as principal at the

start of July.
The school was labelled as

good by the Ofsted team after

their visit last month.
Its a major step forward for
Erdington Hall, which had been
warned by Ofsted last September
that it needed to improve.
This latest report said: Since the
last inspection, the new principal
and vice-principal have worked in
close partnership with their lead
sponsor school to improve the
quality of teaching and accelerate
outcomes for pupils.
As a result, standards across the

groups, is consistently good and is contributing
effectively to good progress.
The curriculum is broad and exciting and
contributes well to pupils spiritual, moral, social
and cultural development.
The majority of parents who met with inspectors at the start of the school day, and those
who responded to the free text part of the
online questionnaire, are extremely positive
about the school.

whole school are rising.

The good progress is due to good
teaching, the report concludes.
The report praises all aspects of
the school, and describes the curriculum as exciting.
Pupils are encouraged to voice
their opinions and feel that teachers help them. They are highly
positive about their learning experiences and their teachers.
One pupil commented that teachers know everything and help us
to know how to improve, noted
the Ofsted team.

sharply on the next steps in pupils learning.

Pupils take a real pride in their books
The good curriculum promotes discussion
and debate, and pupils are learning how to
construct a rational argument and to express
an opinion.
The behaviour of pupils is good. Pupils enter
the school calmly and are ready to learn
quickly. They return from their breaktimes in an
orderly fashion and are quickly ready to work.
Pupils care for, and show respect for, each
other. For example, during dinner time the
inspectors observed a pupil offering to pour
others on his table a glass of water.
Pupils attitudes towards learning are good and
they are keen to learn.

14 million Brits suffer car

amnesia, losing their vehicle an average of four times
over the last twelve months.

New research from Direct Line Car

Insurance reveals almost one in
three motorists admit to forgetting
where they parked their car and we
spend on average 25 minutes looking for these lost vehicles.
Male drivers spend longer looking
for their cars compared to female
drivers (32 minutes to 20 minutes).
Over the course of a lifetime, this
means that motorists could spend
almost three days trying to find
their misplaced cars.

Those were the words of Erdington MP Jack Dromey to UKIP

MEP Bill Etheridge in a heated
exchange on television earlier
this month.
Dromey claims that there has been
an increase in hate crime since the
European referendum.
He says that the BREXIT campaign
stirred up racial tensions and encouraged people to express xenophobic
views.
Thats absolute nonsense, Bill
Etheridge replied to the Erdington
MP in the discussion chaired by
Patrick Burns on the Sunday Politics
Show.
The argument followed on from
claims made by Mr Dromey after the
referendum result.
Erdington has become Little Poland, said one local interviewee on
a BBC Panorama programme a few
days later. He was talking to presenter Adrian Chiles in the caf of St
Barnabas Church about his reasons
for voting to leave the European Union.
According to Jack Dromey, Polish residents of Erdington and neighbouring
constituencies have described incidents of anti-Polish abuse since the
EU referendum result.
One said that she has lived in the
UK since 1998 and definitely feels
a change has taken place, telling
of how she was called scum by a
neighbour on her road.
Another was pushed out of the way
at a supermarket in Harborne and
told to be quiet when they protested

and that they would be out of the

UK soon.
Another described receiving abuse
from youngsters as they shouted:
Go home soon at her.
The simple truth is that Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage played the race
and immigration card because the
Brexit campaign could not win the
economic and security arguments,
he claims.
A further anecdote from Mr Dromey
involves an incident at a railway station.
Mr Dromeys version is: A bystander
described an altercation between
the conductor and a passenger. He
said that the train was ready to pull
off when a middle aged white man
started addressing the conductor
who appeared to be from a minority
background. The man told the conductor to open the doors- a request
that the conductor refused as the
train was late.
The man then said We have left Europe and we will be making the rules
now and that the conductor should
watch his step in future.
Two thirds of the Tyburn voting population ignored Mr Dromeys pleas to
vote to REMAIN in the European Union. In fact, results show that Tyburn
was one of the strongest supporters
of BREXIT in Birmingham.
In Birmingham, the vote was close
- less than 1% difference split the
LEAVE and REMAIN vote.
But in Tyburn, there was no doubt.
A massive 68% of local voters said
LEAVE.
Tyburn voters defied their local MP
and ignored the pleas of the JLR
bosses.

state-of-the-art contactless technology.
It has signed a multi-million

The first ticket machines will be appearing on buses in Coventry at the

Managing Director Peter Coates said:
We know our customers want the
choice of using contactless when they

Only a month ago, we introduced it
on the Midland Metro and already
7% of passengers buying a ticket on
board are using contactless.
So, as part of our pledge to the West

people travelling by bus, we are investing in contactless because it
makes journeys quicker and easier
for passengers.
The new technology will speed up
bus journey times because passengers will spend less time buying a

ticket. A recent report for Greener

Journeys - The Effects of Congestion
on Bus Passengers by Professor David
Begg - pointed out:
If London-style cashless buses with
contactless payment and smart ticketing could be extended to the rest
of the UK, bus journey times could
be improved by up to 10% by halving
dwell time at bus stops. In urban conditions, dwell time makes up between
25% and 33% of total journey time.
The big five bus operators in the UK
have set a target to introduce contactless bus transactions by 2022.
They should do everything possible
to accelerate this, and it is realistic for
them to achieve this goal in the large
conurbations within three years.
National Express West Midlands
awarded the contract for driver consoles, on-board computers, ticket
printers, validators and the back-office system to keep it all running to
German company INIT Innovations in

help unlock the potential of walking to

Locally the mental health trust and

UKIP Sutton Coldfield

& Erdington, Chair

The momentous events of

the past week have left many
shell-shocked by the relentless pace of resignations,
betrayals, sackings and new
parliamentary appointments.
In Birmingham last week, Teresa May said
Brexit means Brexit, and you can trust
UKIP to ensure that she delivers on that
promise.
The referendum victory raises a serious
question for Brexit supporters of political
parties whose MPs ignored their electorate and supported the Remain campaign.
Our MP is one of those who failed to recognise that a majority of his constituents

While lack of exercise is currently

of this piece of public health policy is
to enable all of us to lead not only
heathier but happier lives.

are deeply concerned about the effects of

uncontrolled migration, and you have to
ask yourself, can you trust him to represent your views and opinions in the future?
He also said that the 42% rise in racehate crimes is a direct consequence of
Brexit. Racism is abhorrent, but to suggest that people have suddenly become
racists because of Brexit is nonsensical.
A 42% increase sounds massive, but a
42% increase of 2000 reported incidents
nation-wide, whilst still disgraceful, puts
this statistic into perspective. Unacceptable? Yes it is, but a sign of massive antiimmigrant hatred? Definitely not!
The deep division in the Labour Party
following Jeremy Corbyns refusal to resign after a no confidence vote, is driving labour supporters to UKIP. Only UKIP
now truly represents the voices of ordinary working people, small business and
the disenfranchised. Our membership is
booming because we listen to you, we respect you, we represent you and we value
your support.

and I had hoped by now that those
at the top would be seeking to move
forward rather than continue to dwell
on the outcome.
Unfortunately, it seems, we will continue for a while being given halftruths.

BATTLE OF THE SOMME CENTENARY

The Birmingham Pals, and the

women of that day and today
40,000 soldiers would be wounded, and 20,000 men had died by
nightfall.
I thought about the families they
had left behind particularly about
the role women played in the war
and whose role should not be underestimated.
They answered the call and looked
after the family, worked in the
munitions factories and did all the

other jobs that men did at that

time.
In my opinion women kept the
wheels of industry turning then
and still do today making a massive contribution to the economy.
I will continue to acknowledge this
and support Labour Party policies
such as 25 hours free child care
that support families and the
economy.

at 07.30am I stood in
Victoria Square with
other members of the
Council, a whistle was
blown which would have
started the battle of the
Somme and I thought
of those lads from Birmingham known as the
Birmingham Pals who
had grown up together,
went out to France to
fight together and died
together.
As I stood there my thoughts
turned to what must have been
going through the minds of the
young men who stood and waited
for the whistle to blow and the order to advance over the top.
No one could or would have believed that on that first day nearly

Mega cash-boost

Floodlit all-weather pitch for Vale stadium
Local football in Castle
Vale has been granted a
wish by the FA....iry godmother of football.
The FA (Football Association) Facilities Fund and the Premier League
have guaranteed a cash boost of
687,000 to make major improvements to the facilities, and to the
sports teams.
The money has been given to Pioneer, the stadium managers, to buy
a new artificial pitch, with floodlights.
The new facilities are expected to attract more players, with a 66% boost
to participation in the sport.
They are also expecting to add a further 19 teams to their roster of clubs
that use the facilities at Farnborough

Fields.
Its good news for local football
teams, and also for Pioneer, who
have had a rough time since taking
over the stadium from the council in
a bid to save the site.
Pioneers revenue from hire of pitches has been hit by local clubs dropping out, moving to other grounds or
closing down.
This new floodlit all-weather pitch will
make Vale Stadium a much more attractive proposition for local clubs.
The money has been given to Pioneer, who now manage the stadium.
It will be spent on a new floodlit third
generation (3G) artificial grass pitch
(AGP).
A Pioneer spokesperson said that the
money will support the development

of grassroots football within the local

community and enable the growth of
our partner club Castle Vale Town FC.
The works are projected to increase
on-site participation by 66%, with
the club also expecting to add a further 19 teams to its current roster.
Duval Palgrave, Chairman of Castle
Vale Town FC, said: It has been
the Clubs dream to have first class
training and playing facilities, and by
working in partnership with The Pioneer Group and the Football Foundation.
We can now realise that dream and
make even bigger plans for the future.
We already have a number of successful teams including junior, youth,
girls, and mini-soccer, but with the
Premier League and The FA Facilities
Fund investment for a new 3G pitch,
there will be even more opportunity
to play football.
This funding will grow and progress
the club to the next level, offering
more children the chance to take
part in a sport that brings communities together.

Ive been fortunate enough to
have played golf both home and
abroad.
From the rolling hills of Ireland, to
the shores of Scotland, to the picturesque, sun drenched fairways of
Portugal and Spain, but never before
have I experienced the tranquillity
and beauty like Antequera Golf Club.
I arrived at Malaga airport in Spain on
a Sunday morning, a bit weary, but
also excited at the prospect of playing

a game of golf in shorts, sunglasses

and smothered in sun cream(It was
raining back home, well flash floods
to be precise).
As I walked through customs my mobile phone rang, Hi Tony, this is Karl
Adams from Antequera Golf Club,
wait outside the airport I will be there
in 30 mins.
Karl Adams is the golf director and
pro at Antequera.
As I sat down on the bench, I could
feel the warmth of the sun already on
my not so hairy head.
It was 10.45am.
Karl had already text me the day before telling me the temperature could
reach 40 degrees by the time I arrive,
but still I made my journey in a pair
of jeans.
Karl is originally from Stoke on Trent,
but his life now seems a long way

Nothing could be
fairer than the
golf in Antequera
away from the Midlands.
As we made our way back inland for
about a 30 minute car journey to Antequera, Karl started telling me about
the golf course and the hotel I was
by now itching to see. As we drove
up to the entrance of the golf club,
I couldnt believe my eyes. I almost
jumped out of the car in anticipation.
The panoramic views were amazing,
hills, fairways, water, mountains, wild
flowers, the sun beating down , by
now even hotter, and the silence, yes

GOALKEEPER NEEDED

the silence was unreal. A solitary bird

chirping in the background.
Beer Tony? said Karl. Well it would
be rude not to.
As Karl ordered the drinks and food in
fluent Spanish, I sat outside and tried
my best to take it all in.
I looked down onto the first fairway,
which ran away into the distance to
as far as the eye could see.
To my right was a large green surrounded by water, and further right
was a driving range surrounded by
the sort of mountains youd see in a
Clint Eastwood western.
Tomorrow morning Id be teeing
my ball up and......Nice views , eh
Tone?, Karl was back with the beers.
Tomorrow morning came and went,
and so did the next.
I had stayed at the Antequera Hotel,
part of Antequera golf. A four star
hotel, an ideal location with all the
amenities thrown in.
Antequera golf and hotel are both
stunning facilities.
The golf course was beautiful, memories, I will treasure for years to
come.
Why dont you pop along and visit
Karl yourself, and stay at the Hotel
Antequera, and thank me on your
return.
