ExamsandQuizzes:
MidtermexaminationswillbegivenduringlecturetimeonMonday12andThursday22July.
ThefinalexaminationisscheduledforSaturday31July(15:0018:00).
Makeupexamsarenotpossible,andexamlocationswillonlybechangedforOSDclientsor
activedutymilitaryassignedoutofstateduringexams.Fiveormorequizzeswillbegiven,but
youroverallquizscorewillbeatleastashighasyourfourhighestscores,soifyoumissaquiz
duetoalegitimateorotherreasonyouwillnotbeallowedtomakeitup.Thequizzeswilldeal
withmaterialbeingcoveredinclassduringthecorrespondingweek(aswellasnecessaryrelated
materialandassignedreadingorhomework).Thetimeforthequizzeswillnotbeannounced.
Quizzeswillbeheldeitherduringthelecturetimeorduringthediscussionsection.Allexams
andquizzesmustbewritteninink.
PlagiarismandCheating
Plagiarism(presentingthelanguage,ideas,orthoughtsofanotherasonesoriginalwork)will
notbetoleratedinthisclassandwillbedealtwithaccordingtothepoliciesdictatedbythe
University(UniversitypoliciescanbefoundintheUCSDCatalog).Ifapaperisfoundtocontain
materialcopiedfromanothersourcewithoutproperreference,thestudentwillreceiveagradeof
Ffortheentirecourse.AnyonecheatingonanexamwillreceiveagradeofFfortheentire
course.

(1)AlllegitimatereasonsformissingmandatorypartsofthecourserequirealetterfromaDean,aDivine,or
amedicalDoctor.PleasebringorsubmitthesewhenyoutalkoremailtotheTAorinstructor.
(2)Missingalecture,section,orquizmeansthatyouwillneedtoaskastudentintheclassforthematerialcovered.
Printoutsfromslidesaredistributedinclassonly,butthesedonotconstitutelecturenotes.Takinglecturenotes
enhanceslearningandsoistheresponsibilityofeachstudent;slidesareprovidedonlyasanaidtofacilitatethis.

LecturenotesfrommissedclassesshouldbeobtainedfromotherstudentsintheclassnottheTAorinstructor(even
ifyouhavealegitimatereasonformissingtheclass).
(3)Ifyoumissamidterm,youwillgetazerosothefinalwillcountmore(evenifyouhavealegitimatereasonfor
missingthemidtermsuchassevereillness,adeathinthefamily,etc).Ifyoumissthefirstmidtermandthen
suddenlycannottakeasubsequentmidtermduetosevereillness,adeathinthefamily,etc.,youwillgetazeroon
bothmidtermsandthusbeforcedtodropthecourse.Missingamidtermisariskygamble.
(4)Ifyoumissthefinal,youwillgetazerounlessyouareseriouslyillandcanpresentproofintheformofa
hospitalbillorpolicereportfromanautoaccident.Inthesespecialcases,yourfinalgradewillbedeterminedsolely
fromyourmidtermscoreswithoutdroppinganyofthetwoscores.Offsiteormakeupfinalswillonlybegivento
activemembersofthearmedservicesworkingabroadduringfinalsweek.
(5)Midtermsandthefinalwillneverbegivenexceptatthescheduledtimesandplaces(oratOSD).Iwillhappily
andgratefullymakeexceptionsforsoldierscalledupforoutofstateactivemilitaryduty.
(6)Examswillbereturnedforyourreviewattheendofclass.Nowritingmaterialwillbeallowedduringyour
reviewofthegradedexams,andanymarksthatyouaddtoyourexampriortoaskingforaregradewillconstitute
academicdishonesty.Ifyouhaveaquestionaboutthecorrectanswerorthepartialcredityoureceived,youmust
askitinwritingbeforeyouleavetheclass.Ifyouareunabletofollowthisregradepolicy,youmayrequestan
exceptiontothispolicyinwritingfromtheinstructorforlegitimateandhonestreasons.
(7)Thefollowingwillnotexcuseamidtermorfinal:(a)Athleticengagements,(b)SpecialOlympicsorsimilar
events,(c)Social/familycommitments,(d)Employmentobligations,(e)PoliticalCampaigning,(f)Oversleeping,
(g)Carproblems;(h)Childcare.Ifyouhaveaknownorpotentialconflict,pleasetaketheclassnextyear.
(8)Thefinalwillnotberescheduledforstudentswhohave3finalsinoneday.Ourfinalisnowscheduledfor
Saturday31July.Justtorepeatonemoretime:Studentsmusttaketheirmidtermsandfinalattherequiredtime.
Offsiteormakeupfinalswillonlybegiventoactivemembersofthearmedservicesworkingabroadduring
finalsweek.
(9)YouareencouragedtoobtainhelpfromtheTAandinstructorbyaskingquestionsinclass,section,office
hours,andemail.Allotherformsofimprovingyourworkotherthanyourownhonesteffortareconsidered
unauthorizedcollaborationorcheating,unlessitisexplicitlystatedotherwiseinwriting.Examplesofunauthorized
collaborationorcheatingonexamsandquizzesaredefinedtoincludeanyuseofwordsorequationscopiedfroma
source(suchasyourfriend,theweb,studyguides,notes,yourphone/PDA,yourcalculatormemory);theiruseon
gradedassignmentsispermittedonlyifspecificallyauthorizedandonlyifexplicitlycited.

AcademicDishonesty:TheUniversityexpectsTAsandinstructorstotakestudentmisconduct
veryseriouslyfor"academicdishonestyisunacceptableconductwhichseriouslyunderminesthe
integrityofscholarshipanderodesthevalueofhonesteffort".(fromtheUCSDInstructor's
GuideForPreventingAndProcessingIncidentsOfAcademicDishonesty)Thedefinitionof
academicdishonestybytheuniversityis"anyconductengagedinbyanystudentthatviolatesthe
UCSDPolicyonIntegrityofScholarship".Inshort,allacademicworkmustbedonebythe
studenttowhomtheworkhasbeenassignedFORTHATQUARTER.Furthermore,thatwork
mustbedonewithoutunauthorizedaidofanykind.Thereisabroadrangeofbehaviorsthat
fallundertheumbrellaofacademicmisconduct.Ifyouareunclearonwhetheranyeffort
towardyourgradeinthiscoursecould/wouldbeunauthorized,thenyoushouldbeveryspecific
andaskyourTAortheinstructor.Itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytomakesurethathe/sheis
notdishonestintheacademicsense.Beingacademicallydishonestisaneasywaytofailthis
course(orworseexpulsionfromtheUniversityispossible!).Ifyouhavecommittedacademic
dishonestyandarecaught,theconsequenceswillbesevere(an'F'gradebeingtheleastsevere).
Alluseofunauthorizedmaterialinquizzesorexamsconstitutesacademicdishonesty,asdoes
anyfalse,incomplete,orunclearportrayalofyourworkinrequestingaregrade.Toenrollin
thiscourse,youarerequiredtosignbelowthatyouunderstandallaspectsofthe
requirementsofthiscourse,includingthepolicyonacademicdishonesty.Untilyouhave
signedandreturnedthisform,yourgradesonallcourseworkwillbezero.
