Course Code: OP402

Course Title: Supply Chain Management

Course Overview:

SCM concepts are increasingly being used in business practice for initiating and sustaining
organizational redesign within and across industrial sectors. Todays business world is characterized
by proliferation of product variety, uncertain product volume requirements, product design changes,
increasing customer expectations and shortening of product and technology life cycles. Of late,
Supply Chain Management has assumed a strategic perspective as it effects the bottom line, thus the
return on (ROI) of companies and in turn, the business performance by meeting the needs of the
customer through appropriate design of supply chain. The proposed course on supply chain
management would enable students to understand the concepts and methods developed and applied
by organization in complex business environment. The objective of this course is to provide
students with an insight on how Supply Chain impacts all areas of the firm and show the linkages
between Supply Chain and all the areas.
The course is divided in six modules; Introduction to Supply Chain Management, Collaborative
Forecasting and Replenishment, Purchasing Issues in Supply Chain Management, Distribution
Issues in Supply Chain Management, Sustaining Competitive Advantage, and Best Practices in
SCM
The first module is an overview and introduction on the topic, supply chain management. This
module introduces the basic understanding and concepts of supply chain management. The module
explores through the contemporary issues and challenges in SC area and the students would be
provided a deep insight of supply chain performance in India from operations and strategic
viewpoint.
One of the main issues inhibiting increased supply chain performance today is the lack of visibility
into down-stream demand. This lack of demand and inventory visibility leads to lost sales and high
inventory levels for both retailers and manufacturers. By providing business partner visibility into
inventory and by collaborating on a single shared forecast of customer demand, supply chain
partners can positively impact a set of key business drivers to create value across supply chain
partners. Module two will make an attempt to expose students the understanding of these concepts
and their real life applications.
The third module will address the concepts and issues of strategic alliances in SCM. In order to
maintain the competitive edge in the market, alliances outside one's organizations are order of the
day. This module would enable the students to understand the underlying logic for strategic
alliances and understand the key concepts like, enablers, facilitators and components for successful
alliances. The module would also focus on the supply chain relationship in general with emphasis
on types of relationships and highlight the importance of collaboration to achieve supply chain
objectives..
Network-design based methods add value to the firm in that they lay down the manufacturing and
distribution strategies far into the future. It is imperative that firms at one time or another make such
integrated decisions, encompassing production, location, inventory, and transportation, and such
models are therefore indispensable. The fourth module presents the logistics issues and network
design problems in supply chains. This module would focus more into the core concepts of
transportation management and its related decision areas. Through this module students will
understand how transportation management plays a key role in supply chain management and also
highlights topics like mode of transportation and warehouse management.
1

The fifth and sixth would discuss on the integration issues in supply chain, followed by
performance measurement systems and best practices in SCM. Emerging technologies and adoption
of technologies at every stage in supply chain management enables to fit into the strategic vision of
the organization and acts as an enabler in sustaining the competitive advantage. This module
highlights and covers the above mentioned aspects and would enable students to gather knowledge
and experience from class room discussion of live cases and followed by carefully designed class
exercises.
