7. Color gives life to any composition. They signify meanings.
A. Properties of Color:
a. Hue is the identity of a color. It is the color itself.
b. Value/s indicates the lightness or dullness of a color. A color has the
capacity to produce light, medium or dark shades.
c. Intensity indicates the brightness or darkness of a color.
Full intensity refers to the effect of the color that produces a maximum
brilliancy. All colors that have brilliant effect fall under this category.
Full neutrality refers to the effect of colors that have a maximum grayness.
B. Color Harmony
Color Harmony is the consistent selection and arrangement of colors in the
Color Wheel Chart.
2 Standard Classification of Harmonies
1.) Harmonies of Related Colors a harmony of two or more colors that have
similar effect.
Categories:
a. Monochromatic Harmony a harmony which uses only one color. The color
is tinted to produce either become light, medium or dark.

b. Analogous Harmony a harmony of 2 colors that lie near each other in the
Color Wheel Chart.

2.) Harmonies of Contrasting Colors - a harmony of two or more colors that
are opposite each other in the Color Wheel Chart.
Kinds:
a. Complementary Harmony
This is a harmony of two colors opposite each other in the Color Wheel
Chart.
Ex. __________________
b. Double Complementary Harmony
This is a harmony achieved by combining 4 colors. Two adjacent colors and
its complement form the double complementary harmony.

c. Split Complementary Harmony


This harmony is achieved by combining 3 colors. It begins with a 1 - primary
or tertiary color and the 2 colors on both sides of its complement form the
split complementary harmony.

d. Double Split Complementary Harmony
This harmony is achieved by combining 6 colors of the color wheel chart. The
ruling in citing the colors is same with the split complementary.

e. Triads
Triads are said to be the richest of all color harmonies. Three colors are
involved. They come from the 4 sets:
1.) Primary Triad = Red, Yellow, and Blue
2.) Secondary Triad = Green, Orange and Violet
3.) 1st set of Tertiary = Red orange, Yellow-green, and Blue-violet
4.) 2nd set of Tertiary = Yellow-orange, Blue green and Red violet
Common Interpretations of Colors:
Black death, despair, gloom
White peace, innocence, purity, virginity, cleanliness, dainty, light
Green hope, freshness, abundance, growth, cheerfulness
Blue coolness, calmness, tranquility, brevity, relax, confident, strength
Yellow cheerfulness, life, hospitable, light, hope
Violet power, authority, penance, sorrow
Brown the safest color for all, humility
Red passionate love, festivity, war, heat, danger, stop
Yellow green - Makes brown people appear darker, jealousy, hatred
Pink the only color for love
Orange sweetness, deliciousness, flame, knowledge
