Stage 2 English Communications

Folio Tasks: Part One
Response to an Example of Communication

The political speech Our Country Needs a Truly Great Leader, written and presented by Donald
Trump in June 2015, announces Trumps plans to run for President and aims to persuade and
inform the American people why America needs him. Donald Trump is an American
entrepreneur who owns Trump Towers and was one of the nations wealthiest men at the time.
Since June 2015, Trump has been a candidate of the Republican nomination for President of
the United States in the 2016 election. Before this election Trump ran for President of the United
States in 2000, winning only two Reform Party primaries. In this speech Trump discusses the
occurring issues in the country and world such as Bringing back our jobs from China, from
Mexico, from Japan, and Obamacare, which refers to the current American President
Barack Obama, as well as other political candidates.
Trump directs his intended audience to be New Yorkers, who are republicans, or people who are
interested in politics or want to hear what Trump has to say, or are people who are working in
Trump Towers. This this group is also Trumps live audience, however, there is a viral audience
as well for people who arent in the state of New York at the time, or the country, but also want to
hear what Trump says. This is shown by the beginning of the speech when Trump says Its
great to be at Trump Tower. Its great to be in a wonderful city, New York Trumps also includes a
broader viral audience through his emotive use of inclusive language and references such as
Our country has tremendous potential. and is affecting the whole nation.

The purpose of this announcement is to persuade people of the United States that Donald
Trump should be the next president. Trump does this in various ways, one is in the start of the
speech hes saying how great it is to be in New York and its an honour to have everyone here
he goes on to explain that Theres been no crowd like this by doing this me makes the
audience feel welcomed and wanted and appeals to their sense of pride by saying that New
York is great. Later on in the speech Trump captures the audiences hearts, this happens when
Trump says Our country is in trouble. We don't have victories anymore. The audience can hear
that he is saying our country instead of this country and because he is using personal pronouns
it makes it sound more genuine, also by saying the country is in trouble it is making people
recognise that he is realistic and honest, whereas stereotypical politicians would neglect to
mention the issue. Trump also address world issues and presents himself as a saviour by saying
When was the last time anybody saw us beating, let say, China in a trade deal? They kill us.
I beat China all the time. All the time. This boasting and reassurance of his abilities lets the
audience know that he is able to beat formidable foes as a result will be able to make their
country great again.

Donald Trump uses various language techniques to appeal to his audience while attacking the
other candidates. Trump appeals to his audience by using the history of America and comparing
its latests lack of advancement to that of other countries, such as China with its, roads, bridges,
schools and how they have never seen anything like it. The Chinese have bridges that make
the George Washington Bridge look like small potatoes This use of casual language and
colloquial like smilies suggests to his American audiences that their nation used to be the
country where everything was amazing, big and powerful, however now it has become a
dumping ground for everybody elses problems. Trump also appeals to his listeners sense of
patriotism by expressing his love for the US military to the audience and how he wants to build a
strong, successful one. Trump also uses a series of rhetorical questions to employ the the reality
of what is happening to the country. These questions, such When do we beat Mexico at the
border? Theyre laughing at us, at our stupidity. And now theyre beating us economically.and
When did we beat Japan at anything? They send their cars over by the millions, and what do
we do? When was the last time you saw a Chevrolet in Tokyo? These rhetorical questions have
an effect on the listeners because it is making them notice that America is not great anymore in
multiple ways with trade and economical issues.
that are also used for Japan, are making the audience come to the realisation that America is no
longer the high power country it once was. A common technique that Trump includes throughout
his speech are attacks not only on the other candidates but also the current president of the
United States, President Obama. Trump undermines Obamas masculinity, his leadership skills,
and his knowledge of negotiation in order to run America. Comments such as He was vibrant,
he was young. I really thought that he would be a great cheerleader., Our president doesnt
have a clue. Hes a bad negotiator and the last one being We have a disaster called the big lie:
Obamacare. Makes Obama and the opposition team seem less credible and encourages the
audience to agree with Trumps side of the argument. The last strategy that Trump uses is
statistical evidence in order to capture the lies that are being put out by the occurring
Government. He does this when discussing the unemployment rate in America stating that our
real unemployment is anywhere from 18 to 20 percent. Don't believe the 5.6 percent that is
reported by current Governments. These statistical evidence helps Trump by visually showing
the audience that they are currently being lied to.
Although Trump utilises many persuasive techniques throughout his speech. It is not like most
political speeches as they are normally delicately laid out and structured. Trump rambles on
from topic to topic and says what he likes almost to the fact that there isn't a structure or stylistic
feature. Although the purpose of this effect is to make people see that he is not like other
politicians that he is one of us. Despite Trump acknowledging the occurring problems in
America, he does not give a reasonable or economically helpful solution on how they are going
to be fixed. Trumps idea of being a great country again is to kick out the Mexico and China

because China and Mexico has our jobs and to build a strong military. Although there is a large
amount of supporters for Trump, there are a lot of people who are worried and scared of Trump
becoming president due to his lack of reasonableness that occurs throughout his speech like
discussing how Ford is building a manufacture in Mexico and because it is an American
company it should be built in America because Mexico going to take away thousands of jobs.
This is unreasonable, just because another country has jobs available or are gaining jobs for
their people does not mean that they are stealing jobs. A huge majority in America is
unemployed but not because theres a lack of jobs it is because no one wants to work because
of welfare.
