A Message From The Director

The State of the Center

This October marks the end of my eighteenth year in service to the seniors of Washington
Heights and Inwood and six years as your Director. I cannot believe how the time has flown.
I feel so close to each and every one of you. You are truly my extended family. As in previous
years lets review our year together and smile.
Our meals continue to be the highlight of the Center, with nutritious, varied and fresh lunches
prepared with love by our own Yehuda Levy. Do you know that we 20% overserved our
contracted meal units this past year?
Our Crafts Program produces high quality results that our clients are proud to wear, use and gift. From beading to
origami napkin folding to crocheted scarves and decorated photo frames - our projects continue to be in high demand.
Our Wellness Program just keeps growing and growing! We continue to be grateful for the generous additional funding
from the Allen Hospital which funds our Zumba, Nutrition/Cooking classes, and a portion of our Massage therapy
sessions. We hired a new Tai Chi instructor this year to rave reviews. Of course, Walking Club, Pilates, Fit n Fun, and
Yoga continue to be offered on a regular basis. In order to explore alternate paths to wellness, weve held more
Feldenkrais classes, Aromatherapy workshops and explored Acupuncture after 60. We also added two well-received
evidence based wellness activities - A Matter of Balance and Walk with Ease. Keeping our seniors healthy and active is
a top priority at Moriah!
With the help of generous funding by Gemiluth Chessed of Greater New York, weve been able to run a fairly robust Trip
Program again this year. We have visited the famous Woolworth Building Lobby, the Space Shuttle Pavilion at the
Intrepid, and a special The Sky Tonight Live at the Planetarium of the Hudson River Museum. Just last month we
explored Alexander Hamiltons historic home. More trips are already in the works!
The Centers Parties and Concerts are not to be missed. Our musical entertainment debuts an eclectic range of styles,
and this years concerts included a flute/harp duo, a woodwinds quintet and a string trio. We have another string quartet
due this month! The Choir of KAJ entertained at our Thanksgiving Luncheon, and our Chanukah Party featured a five
foot balloon menorah. Our Pre-Purim Masquerade and Juggling Show was the highlight of the year with an Egyptian
theme that transported us to sand and sphinxes. Our always patriotic July 4th party was also a star-spangled affair. All
this is in addition to our wonderful in-house Music Man, Cantor Eric S. Freeman, who in addition to providing musical
entertainment at many of our functions, runs our monthly Music Mondays. This summer he extended his repertoire and
introduced a very well-received Opera in the a.m. series.
Two new programs joined our flourishing schedule this year - Ruthys Laugh Caf where seniors come to share a cup of
tea and a bit of humor, and our English as a Second Language Class. Of course, Aromatherapy continues.
Our Book Club Discussion Group is currently reading its 57th selection. As always, free loaner copies of all books
discussed are available in the Moriah office.
160 eligible seniors received a $20 Farmers Market Coupon Booklet at the Center to help defray the high cost of fresh
produce.
As in past years, Moriah coordinated a Free Flu Clinic at the Center last month. Nearly 100 seniors had the opportunity
to receive the vaccine in a safe, convenient and familiar environment.
I must tell you that it is only because Moriahs amazing staff makes everything LOOK easy, that Moriah has risen to this
high level of service. What would Moriah be without Chani? On a daily basis, she steps out of the confines of her job
description to pitch in at every opportunity, lending her unparalleled organizational skills and astute viewpoint to all facets
of the Center.
Clients are taken in by Ruthys warmth and discretion in addressing a myriad of issues. They are drawn to the care she
takes and the personal touch she brings to resolving their problems. Ruthy is proficient in finding all eligible benefits due
to our clients. Feel free to approach Ruthy and let her assist YOU!
And lets not forget all of YOU! Your thoughtful input, gentle encouragement, generous donations and warm expressions
of appreciation touch our hearts and spur us on. Heres to another wonderful year ahead!
Looking forward to greeting you personally at the Center and partnering with you in its continued growth,

Shuli Gutmann

Group
Come join the group on Monday, October 31st at 2 pm,

The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper

"Phaedra Patrick understands the soul. Eccentric, charming, and

wiseThe Curious Charms is not just for those who are mourning
over love or the past. This book will illuminate your heart." Nina
George, New York Times bestselling author of The Little Paris
Bookshop
In this poignant and curiously charming debut, a lovable widower
embarks on a life-changing adventure .

Sixty-nine-year-old Arthur Pepper lives a simple life. He gets

out of bed at precisely 7:30 a.m., just as he did when his
wife, Miriam, was alive. He dresses in the same gray slacks
and mustard sweater vest, waters his fern, Frederica, and
heads out to his garden.
But on the one-year anniversary of Miriam's death, something changes. Sorting
through Miriam's possessions, Arthur finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he's
never seen before. What follows is a surprising and unforgettable odyssey that
takes Arthur from London to Paris and as far as India in an epic quest to find out
the truth about his wife's secret life before they meta journey that leads him to
find hope, healing and self-discovery in the most unexpected places.
Featuring an unforgettable cast of characters with big hearts and irresistible
flaws, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper is a joyous celebration of life's
infinite possibilities.

advance reading.
