Stanfords series with Washington is its second oldest, and the Huskies are the Cardinals most common out-of-state opponent.
Stanford has won seven of its past eight meetings with Washington, and with a win on Friday, Stanford will hold the upper hand in
the series (tied at 41-41-4). Stanford only once defeated Washington from 1983-2003.
Stanfords seven-game winning streak is the longest since rattling off eight straight in 2015.
The Cardinal has won 15 of its past 16 outings, and matched a school-record seven straight Pac-12 regular-season road games (201011). No Stanford team ever has won eight straight conference regular-season road games. Stanford also won six straight conference
regular-season road games from 1926-28, 1933-35 and 1974-75.
Fridays game will be the first played outside of California for the Cardinal since Nov. 7, 2015 (at Colorado), a span of 328 days.
Stanford is off to a 3-0 start for the fifth time since 2010.
Stanford ranks eighth nationally in scoring defense (12.0), 17th in rushing defense (95.3) and 33rd in total defense (337.7). Conrad
Ukropina is tied for first in field goal percentage (1.000), converting all six attempts. Christian McCaffrey ranks second in rushing yards
per game (145.3) and all-purpose yards (211.67). Hes 15th in total rushing yards (436).
Under head coach David Shaw, Stanford is 29-8 on the road, 38-9 vs. Pac-12 opponents, 17-3 in September, 44-13 coming off a win,
20-9 vs AP ranked opponents, 29-7 when ranked higher and 18-4 on ESPN.
For the first time in the 56-year history of the conference preseason poll, Stanford was chosen as the favorite to win the Pac-12
Conference title. The media poll has correctly selected the conference champion in 29 of 55 previous polls, but only twice in the last
nine polls. The Cardinal was not picked to win as much as the Pac-12 North Division in any of its three recent championship seasons
(2012, 2013, 2015).
The Cardinal returns 48 letterwinners (20 offense, 24 defense, four specialists) and 14 starters (five offense, six defense, three
specialists) from last seasons Pac-12 championship team that finished 12-2 and won the Rose Bowl Game against Iowa. Only 24.5
percent of this years Stanford roster is composed of fourth- and fifth-year seniors. Underclassmen make up 75.5 percent of the 2016
roster.

13 from 1923-35.

The program partnered with APTUS Sports to maximize athletic and academic development.
Prior to the season, each player completed 10 game-like exercises in 30 minutes on a special tablet
that assessed how quickly and accurately they learn, react and adjust. APTUS analyzed individual,
group and team data, and reported the findings to the coaching staff.
In 2012, Stanford became the first college program to use iPad playbooks, saving countless trees,
dollars and man-hours.
Fifth-year senior SS Dallas Lloyd, fifth-year senior WR Michael Rector, fifth-year senior OG Johnny
Caspers, junior DE Solomon Thomas and junior RB Christian McCaffrey serve as captains, as voted
by their teammates. In the modern era of Stanfords captains voting, only fourth- and fifth-year
seniors had ever appeared on the ballot, making the nods for McCaffrey and Thomas a programfirst.
Stanford is the nations only team to play 11 Power 5 programs (and Notre Dame), six road
games and no FCS programs. Along with Stanford, the nations only three teams to face 11 Power
5 programs (and Notre Dame) are USC, Texas and Oregon. Stanford and Oregon are the only two
teams to play six road games.

Stanfords 69 wins this decade are the most of any private school, ahead of TCU (61), Baylor (61),
Notre Dame (56) and USC (53).
No Pac-12 Conference team has had more draftees over the past five years than Stanford (24).
Following the 2015 season, Stanford became the only school ever ranked in the top-4 by U.S.
News and World Report (4th) and the Associated Press (3rd). Forbes named Stanford the nations
top university in 2016. For the class of 2020, Stanford received 43,977 applications and accepted
2,037 -- a rate of 4.7%, the lowest in the country. Harvard, in comparison, accepted 2,063 students
out of a pool of 39,044, a 5.2% acceptance rate.
Coaching continuity remains a hallmark of the program. Nine of 10 full-time coaches returned
for 2016, the only change coming at defensive line, where Diron Reynolds replaced the retired
and nationally-respected Randy Hart. Reynolds isnt a stranger to The Farm, having served as a
defensive assistant for Hart in 2014 before spending last year at Oklahoma. Bradford M. Freeman
Director of Football David Shaw and Willie Shaw Director of Defense Lance Anderson are back
for their 10th seasons, while Andrew Luck Director of Offense Mike Bloomgren and special teams
coach Pete Alamar are in their sixth and fifth years, respectively.

Stanford has scored at least 10 points in 111 of its past 112 games (only game without at least 10
points came at Northwestern to start 2015 season).
Stanford has scored at least 20 points in each of its past 16 games, and 30 or more points in 14 of
its past 16 games.
Stanford has rushed for at least 100 yards in 51 of its past 54 games. The only three games without
at least 100 yards rushing during that stretch were 2014 losses at No. 9 Notre Dame (47) and No. 17
Arizona State (76), and a 2015 loss at Northwestern (85).
Stanford has recorded at least one rushing touchdown 49 times in its past 52 games (only
games without a rushing touchdown during that stretch were 2014 loss vs. Utah, 2015 loss at
Northwestern and 2016 win at UCLA).
Notes
Against USC, Stanford rushed for 302 yards without allowing a single quarterback sack. One week
later at UCLA, the Cardinal accounted for 207 yards rushing.
Stanford has scored seven offensive touchdowns in 2016, with five covering at least 35 yards or
more.
The Cardinal has won the time-of-possession battle in 19 of its past 23 games (only games
without doing so were the 2015 opener at Northwestern, 2015 home win vs. Cal, 2016 Rose Bowl
vs. Iowa, 2016 opener vs. Kansas State). In 12 of its past 19 games, Stanford has held the ball for
nine or more minutes than opponents.
Stanford led the nation in time of possession in 2015 (34:48), the seventh-best clip in the past 20
years. The Cardinal is the only team with two top-10 single-season time of possession rankings
over the past 20 years. The Cardinal is second nationally since 2010 in time of possession (33:05).
The Cardinal has held the ball over 40 minutes in a game five times this decade.
Since 2010, Stanford ranks second nationally in third-down percentage at a 48.3 clip, trailing only
Navy (48.7). Over the same stretch, the Cardinal is third in fourth-down percentage (65.9).
Stanfords 13 turnovers in 2015 were the fewest in program history. The Cardinal has four
turnovers through three games this season.
The #WildCaff is back. Christian McCaffrey, the 2015 AP Player of the Year, looks to build on a
record-breaking sophomore season. The do-it-all communication major is Stanfords top returning
rusher, receiver, kick returner, punt returner and touchdown passer. Heres a snapshot of his
historic 2015 campaign:

Along with Louisiana-Lafayettes Elijah McGuire, McCaffrey is one of only two active FBS players
with 2,000 career yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving. McCaffrey is only one of six Pac-12
players since 1996 to reach that milestone, and the third such player in Stanford history (Darrin
Nelson and Brad Muster).
McCaffrey had at least 200 all-purpose yards in a nation-best eight consecutive games before
being limited to 165 all-purpose yards at UCLA.
McCaffrey has rushed for at least 100 yards in five straight games and 14 of his past 15 outings
(only game without 100 yards rushing during that stretch was a 94-yard performance against Notre
Dame in 2015 regular-season finale).

McCaffrey carried 98 times (in five games) as a sophomore before scoring his first rushing
touchdown. He ran for his first score as a junior on his 12th carry of the season. Christian McCaffrey
ran for two touchdowns of 35+ yards versus Kansas State. He rushed for one touchdown of 35+
yards in all of his historic 2015 season.
Senior Ryan Burns was Stanfords starting quarterback in the season-opening contest against
Kansas State and is 3-0 as a starter. Burns followed Kevin Hogan, the winningest starting
quarterback in school history. In fact, Burns (Leesburg, Virginia) grew up less than 30 miles from
Hogans hometown of McLean, Virginia. Hogan, 36-10 as a starter, was one of college footballs
most experienced quarterbacks.
Burns was efficient in his starting debut, finishing with 156 yards passing and one touchdown
while controlling the offense. Burns became the first quarterback since Florida States Jameis
Winston (2013) to begin their first career start with 10 straight pass completions, and the first Pac12 quarterback to do so since Cals Aaron Rodgers in 2004.
In a comeback win at UCLA, Burns led the Cardinals late fourth-quarter scoring drive, which
spanned 1:41 and covered 70 yards in 10 plays. Burns was 5 of 8 passing for 66 yards, including the
game-winning 8-yard touchdown completion to JJ Arcega-Whiteside.

Stanford has allowed a team to rush for 200 or more yards only five times in its past 42 outings
(2013 at Army, 2014 at Oregon, 2015 at Northwestern, 2015 vs. Oregon, 2015 vs. Notre Dame).
Stanford has held opponents to fewer than 400 yards of total offense in 31 of its past 38 games.
The Cardinal has at least one tackle for loss in each of its past 76 contests and at least one sack in
61 of its past 64 outings (only games without a sack came in 2013 at Army, which attempted just 10
passes, 2015 at Northwestern and 2015 vs. Notre Dame).
Stanford leads the nation with 231 sacks since David Shaw became head coach in 2011.
1971 - Stanfords Benny Barnes picked off three Sonny Sixkiller passes in a 17-6 win in Seattle.
1977 - Guy Benjamin completed 28 of 47 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns but Stanford
saw its 10-game winning streak against the Huskies come to an end in Seattle, 45-21.
1981 - Darrin Nelson became the first running back in school history to rush for four touchdowns in
a game despite a 42-31 loss at Washington.
1982 - John Elway completed 20-of-30 passes for 265 yards and Mike Dotterer rushed for 106 yards
on 20 carries as Stanford upset second-ranked Washington at Stanford Stadium. The performance
landed Elway on the front cover of the following weeks edition of Sports Illustrated.
1988 - Jon Volpe rushed for 220 yards on 29 carries to set a single-game rushing record that stood
for over 20 years.
1994 - Backup quarterback Scott Frost, who had started five games at free safety, came on in relief
after Steve Stenstrom broke his finger in the second quarter. The sophomore engineered three
second-half scoring drives, tacking on 88 rushing yards and a 10-yard touchdown run to upset No.
12 Washington at a rain-soaked Stanford Stadium, 46-28.

2008 - Anthony Kimble came off the bench to rush for a career high 157 yards and two touchdowns
on 15 carries while quarterback Tavita Pritchard completed 16-of-24 passes for a season-high 222
yards and three touchdowns.
2009 - For the second straight week, Chris Owusu returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a
touchdown while Toby Gerhart reached the 200- yard mark in rushing for the first time in his career.
2010 - Stanford limited Washington to 107 yards of total offense and seven first downs while
blanking the Huskies in Seattle, 41-0. Stanford scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and
its defense shut out the Huskies at home for the first time since 1976.
2011 - Stanford took the ground route and buried the Huskies, 65-21, at Stanford Stadium.
Stanford rushed for 446 yards to set a school single-game record. Stepfan Taylor rushed for 138
yards on 10 carries and Tyler Gaffney, running out of the Wildcat formation, gained 117 yards on
nine attempts. It marked the first time Stanford had two 100-yard rushers since 2007.
2012 - Washington receiver Kasen Williams took a quick screen pass 35 yards for the go-ahead
score with 4:53 left as Washington rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Stanford at CenturyLink
Field, 17-13. The Cardinal was held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since 2007,
using Trent Murphys 40-yard interception return for a score to keep the visitors alive.
2013 - Ty Montgomery had two big kickoff returns and a long touchdown reception, gaining 290
all-purpose yards, to put the Cardinal out in front early. But Stanford was in danger in the final
minutes when the Huskies drew within three and had the ball. The Stanford defense held; however,
it took a replay reversal after a Washington catch was ruled complete for a first down, to ensure the
victory.
2014- Kevin Hogan ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 4:29 remaining, and No. 16 Stanford used its
stingy defense and a poorly timed fake punt by Washington to post a 20-13 win. Ty Montgomery
had a 62-yard kickoff return to start the game and also added a 17-yard touchdown reception,
bulling through three Washington defenders to find paydirt.
2015 - Christian McCaffrey caught a touchdown pass, ran for another score and gained 300
all-purpose yards in a sterling all-around performance to lead No. 10 Stanford to its sixth straight
victory, 31-14, over Washington. Kevin Hogan threw for 290 yards and two scores for the Cardinal.
McCaffrey had a 50-yard touchdown catch and 7-yard scoring run in the third quarter. In all, he ran
23 times for 109 yards, caught five passes for 112 yards and added 79 yards on kick returns in his
third 300-yard all-purpose game of the season.

STANFORD, Calif. - As Stanfords offense sputtered in the second half, Christian McCaffrey kept
urging his teammates on that the offense could be better. Then he finally took matters into his
own hands and iced away another win.
McCaffrey scored his second touchdown on a late 41-yard run that helped lead No. 8 Stanford to a
26-13 victory over Kansas State in the season opener for both teams.
Stanford had just 30 yards in the second half before McCaffreys long touchdown run following a
failed onside kick by Kansas State put the game away.
After a fast start led by quarterback Ryan Burns in his first career start, the Cardinal was far from
a machine in the second half. With a new quarterback and three new offensive linemen, Stanford
struggled to get anything going with a fumble and four punts to start the second half.
But a defense that had eight sacks, one safety and two turnovers made sure it wasnt an issue.
Burns started fast by completing his first 10 passes, including a 40-yard touchdown strike to
Michael Rector on the opening play of the second quarter.
McCaffrey then got into the act with an electrifying 35-yard touchdown run. He froze safety
Kendall Adams with a juke and raced to the end zone for the score.
He finished 126 yards on 22 carries and 210 all-purpose yards in the opener this year.
The biggest highlight might have been a play that didnt even count. McCaffrey fielded a punt at
his own, and made his way through almost the entire Kansas State coverage unit for a 97-yard
score. The only problem was an illegal block by Curtis Robinson that wiped it all out and forced
Stanford to start a drive on its own 2.

PASADENA, Calif. - UCLA contained Christian McCaffrey, kept Stanfords offense out of the end
zone and generated just enough points to lead the Pac-12 champions until the Cardinals final
drive.
And then everything reverted to usual form in this one-sided California rivalry.
J.J. Arcega-Whiteside caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Burns with 24 seconds to play,
and No. 7 Stanford rallied for its ninth consecutive victory over the Bruins, 22-13.
McCaffrey rushed for 138 yards for the Cardinal, but they struggled on offense for three and a half
quarters. Stanford got the ball back with 2:05 left and coolly put together a 70-yard drive capped
by Burns fade to Arcega-Whiteside, who got one foot inbounds on an acrobatic play.
Solomon Thomas then returned Josh Rosens fumble 42 yards for a touchdown on the games
final play, punctuating the heartbreak for a lively Rose Bowl crowd. Even with that touchdown,
Stanford had its lowest-scoring performance since the 2015 season opener.
Another stirring Stanford victory was another soul-crushing loss for the Bruins, who havent
beaten their upstate rivals since 2008. They had never even led the Cardinal for more than six
minutes in any of those eight straight losses, but UCLA nursed an advantage in this one for nearly
three quarters -- until Stanford snatched it away again.

The 1926 team was declared national champions by the Dickinson System, Helms Athletic
Foundation, National Championship Foundation and Sagarin Ratings. Although Minnesota was
declared national champions in the final 1940 Associated Press Poll, which was the best-known and
most widely circulated poll of sportswriters and broadcasters in determining the national champion,
Stanford was recognized as national champions by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation
and Poling System.
