late. Just put it all under our bed and lets hope they dont
check there. Youre acting crazy!
I know exactly what Im doing, Sophie. Just stay right
there and tell me when they get close.
When I heard about this scene years later, I was always
told that Papa spoke with a voice so soothing, it hardly
matched the frantic movements Mamishu could see reflected in the window.
Through the glass she was watching packs of German
soldiers, neat yet chilling in their button-front uniforms,
tall black boots, and matching red armbands with a spiderlike symbol inside a white circle. Every soldier carried a
sidearm or a rifle slung over his shoulder. The troops marched
into our neighbors houses, coming out minutes later with
piles of fur, leather coats, and jewelry-filled pillowcases draped
over their arms.
Four-year-old Samuel buried his face into the folds of
Mamishus layered peach-colored skirt each time a gunshot
rang out from inside a neighbors home.
The soldiers were only three houses away now, and
Mamishu looked ner vously from the front door to the back
as my father raced about the house. Bobeshi Grandma

She had meant to calmly say Come in, but of course pleasantries werent necessary. The door was pushed open before
Mamishu even found her voice.
Please appear, please appear, please come back, my mother
surely begged my father in her mind as two soldiers barged
in, one tall, one squat.
As if hed been summoned telekinetically, her husband
materialized in the living room doorframehis shirt retucked and his expression giving no hint at the panic hed
been on the verge of just moments before. His hands, which
hed soiled from digging in the dirt, were now as clean and
unsuspicious as his expression. Papa had gotten the job
done.
We need one thousand zlotys and your jewels! Now!
the tall soldier demanded.
Of course, Papa said, handing over a pile of cash, along
with a charm necklace worth little and a mans pinky ring
he had once found on a train without ever being able to
identify the owner. He had left these two meaningless
items in a side-table drawer before the soldiers arrived, anticipating they would want some jewels.
Surely you cant expect us to believe this is all you have,
the soldier said as he gave his comrade a nod.

the gun out of the soldiers hand. She wanted to point it at his
face instead. She wanted to give the Beritzmanns their clothes
and their dignity back. But unarmed and helpless, she
couldnt leave her hiding spot by the birch trees wide trunk.
After a while, the soldier ordered Mr.Beritzmann to join
his wife and daughter. He waved his gun sideways, directing them to stand right in front of the freshly dug hole. The
soldier was deliberate about their placement. Step to the
right. Not so much. Step back! he said in bad Polish.
The three did what they were told. Finally the soldier
commanded Mr.Beritzmann to hug his family. Mamishu
watched with one eye, peering around the side of the
birch. Mr. Beritzmann wrapped his bare arms around
his wife and that baby girl she was holding so tight.
Mrs. Beritzmann was sobbing and Sasha was screaming
and Mr.Beritzmann was praying aloud, their naked flesh
making them all the more vulnerable.
Hush! the soldier shouted at them. Then, softly, he repeated, Hushhhhh. Hushhhh.
Mamishu couldnt see their faces because they were all
looking down inside their close huddle, their heads pressed
together tightly. They fell silent, though. Even Sasha. She
had followed her mothers and her papas lead and stopped

Then BAM! BAM! BAM! The three shots were each perfectly placed. Naked and entwined together in an eternal
embrace, the whole family fell backward into the big grave
Mr.Beritzmann had just dug.
The soldier stood there with the strangest expression of
satisfaction on his face. Mamishu could sense his deranged
pleasure. She would never forget that mans expression as
much as she wanted to rip the memory from her brain. It
was as if the soldier yielded pleasure from death; like it was
an art form to him.
When the soldier finally kicked some dirt into the hole
and left the scene, my mother ran as fast as she could, on
shaking legs, back to Sosnawa Street. She burst through the
front door and fell onto the couch crying. Bobeshi and
Samuel were both napping in their bedrooms, so for a long
while she was alone with the evil of what shed seen.
That evening at about six oclock around the time Mamishu was panicking that Papa wasnt yet home from his labor
assignment with the German soldiersthere was a loud
knocking at the front door. Before Mamishu could decide

Two days passed, and then the wives on our street finally
decided they would search for their husbands. At sunrise,
Mamishu and a handful of the other wives set off toward
the synagogue, holding hands. Grandma Dora stayed back
with Samuel, having promised Mamishu she would make
sure Samuel remained safe.

On this same day, Papas friend Jacob Fischer had been ordered to the center of town for his work assignment. The
bombings at the start of the month had left behind piles of
rubble six feet deep. Jacob and others in his group were
tasked with what had become a common job: clearing the
mass of debris and sorting out reusable building material.
Two German soldiers were assigned to each Jewish man.
The soldiers only job was to stand directly by their laborers
side endlessly shouting, Work faster, you lazy pig! The
soldiers would prick the points of their bayonets into the
Jewish workmans sides as he heaved trash into wheelbar-1

Finally, unable to take one more step, Abe faced his tormentors and screamed, Kill me! Kill me now! Just kill me!
The soldiers found this hilarious. The crowds cheering
grew louder.
But, to his tormentors, a bullet would have been all too
humane for Abe at this moment. Instead, four soldiers used
clubs to pummel him over the head, back, and legs until he
collapsed. Then they raised their clubs at the rest of the
Jewish laborers, and one soldier shouted, Whos next?
Jacob and his peers closed their gaping mouths and returned to work.

Jonisch, whose house was not far away, were sprinting down
the center of the road. Mamishu let out her breath, not realizing she had been holding it in. She opened the front
door, and a minute later Papa was inside the living room,
panting so heavily he sounded like a wild beast. His fiveminute race to survival had left him speechless. Or maybe
he just didnt want to speak.
Mamishu made him a nice, warm dinner of chicken
soup with lokshen (noodles) and watched him stare at his
bowl wordlessly for an hour, barely touching the meal.
He had always shared every thing with his beloved wife,
but on this night he sat silent.
So Mamishu shared something with him instead. Israel, she said, touching her belly. Darling, there is one good
thing that is sure to come in the next year. There is one
reason to just look ahead, my love.
Papa was so distracted by the terror of the day that he
did not understand at first what she meant.
Were going to have a baby, Israel. In spring, Samuel
will have a little brother or perhaps a little sister, she said
proudly. She watched her husbands tired and drawn face
turn pink with color.
If German guards had been blowing their whistles out-
