T hese well-f ocused and persuasive essays address the prompt directly and in a
convincing manner. An essay scored a 9 demonstrates exceptional insight and
language f acility. It combines adherence to the topic with excellent organization,
content, insight, f acile use of language, mastery of mechanics, and an understanding
of the essential components of an ef f ective essay. Although not without f laws,
these essays are richly detailed and stylistically resourcef ul, sophisticated, complex,
specif ic, consistent, and well-supported.

T hese f ocused and convincing essays address the prompt directly and in a
convincing manner. An 8 combines adherence to the topic with purposef ul
organization, content, insight, language, mechanics, and the essential components of
an ef f ective essay. Although not without f laws, these essays are detailed and
stylistically developed.

(43)

T hese highly competent essays comprehend the task set f orth by the prompt and
respond to it directly, although some of the analysis may be implicit rather than
explicit. T he 7 essay is in many ways a thinner version of the 9-8 paper in terms of
discussion and supporting details, but it is still impressive, cogent, and generally
convincing. It may also be less well-handled in terms of organization, insight, or
vocabulary. Demonstrates a clear understanding but is less precise and less wellsupported than a 9-8 paper. T hese essays demonstrate an adherence to the task,
but deviate f rom course on occasion. T he mechanics are sound, but may contain a
f ew errors which may distract but do not obscure meaning.. However, your inf erences
are not as insightf ul and well-developed as an 8 9 essay.

6
(41)

Essays earning a score of 6 adequately develop a position that answers the prompt.
T he evidence and explanations used are appropriate and suf f icient, and the argument
is coherent and adequately developed. T he writing may contain lapses in diction or
syntax, but generally the process demonstrates control of ideas and writing.

5
(38)

Of ten characterized by superf iciality. Responds to the question without important

errors, but misses the complexity of the task. T hese essays may be overly simplistic
in analysis, or rely almost exclusively on Level 1 thinking. Arguments are implicit rather
than explicit. Although adequate to convey the students thoughts, the writing is not
as well conceived, organized or developed as that of papers scoring in the upper half .

4
(35)

T hese lower-half essays compound the problems f ound in the 5 essay. T hey
maintain the general idea of the writing assignment, show some sense of
organization, but are weak in content, maturity of thought, language f acility, and/or
mechanics. T hey of ten provide little or no analysis. If you work at this level, you have
achieved comprehension of the material and the task but you have not applied that
knowledge in writing.

3
(33)

T hese lower-half essays compound the problems f ound in the 4 essay. T hey may
distort the topic or f ail to deal adequately with one or more important aspects of the
topic. T hey of ten demonstrate signif icant sustained misreadings, and provide little or
no analysis. Essays that are particularly poorly written may be scored a 3. If you work

at this level, may not have f ull comprehension of the material but you have not
applied that knowledge in writing.
2
(31)

T hese essays make an attempt to deal with the topic but demonstrate serious
weakness in content and coherence and/or syntax and mechanics. Of ten, they are
unacceptably short. T hey are poorly written on several counts, including numerous
distracting errors in mechanics, and/or little clarity, coherence, or supporting evidence.

1
(25)

Essays earning a score of 1 meet criteria f or a 2 but are especially simplistic in their
discussion or weak in their control of language.
