Volleyball Rules:
(Modified for the purposes of our competition)

Scoring:
Rally scoring will be used. This means there will be a point scored on every
serve of the ball (as opposed to only being able to score a point when your
team is serving)
The serving team will score on a defence miss or out of bounds hit
The defence (receiving team) will score on an offensive miss, out of bounds
hit, or serve into the net
The team that wins the point either gains or keeps possession of the serve
If the team that won the point served in the previous point, the same player
serves again
If the team that won the point did not serve the previous point, their team
rotates their positions on the court in a clockwise manner and become the
serving team
Games will be scored based on time (in other words, at the conclusion od the
game the team who has scored the most points within the allocated time will
be the winner)
Playing the game:
Once the volleyball crosses the net from the oppositions side, the team may
use a combination of up to three hits (dig, set, spike etc.) with the volleyball to
return the ball to the oppositions side (a block does not count as a hit)
A player may not hit the ball twice in succession (remembering a block is not
considered a hit)
If two or more players contact the ball at the same time, it is considered one
play and the players involved may not participate in the next play
The ball may be played off the net during a rally and on serve.
Players can contact the ball outside of the court boundaries, as long as the
volleyball does not hit the ground.
It is legal to hit the volleyball with any part of the body, the foot and leg
included.
If any part of the ball touches the line it is classified as in.
Serving:
To get started a team is selected to serve by coin toss. The second half will
be started with the service of the team that did not serve first in the first half
The server must stay behind the end line until after they have served the
volleyball

The serve must be completed by the elected server and must pass to the
oppositions side with one contact to the volleyball. If the volleyball hits the net
on the serve, as long as it passes onto the oppositions side of the court, it is a
valid serve.
The ball may be served underhand or overhand.
The ball must be clearly visible to opponents before the serve.
The serve must be returned by a bump only. There is no setting or attacking a
serve
Rotations:
Volleyball teams consist of between five and six players
A volleyball teams rotates each time it is called on to serve (in other words
rotation occurs when the other team has the serve but your team wins the
point)
Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner (see diagram below)

Team positioning:
1.#The#Server#
2.#Attacking#player#
3.#Attacking#player#
4.#Attacking#player#
5.#Backcourt#player#
6.#Backcourt#player#
#

Only those in the front three metre area (2, 3 & 4) or the attacking zone are
allowed to jump, spike or block near the net.
#

Backcourt players (1, 5 & 6) cannot attack the volleyball in the front row. If
they attack, they have to perform the jump behind the attack line (3m line
dotted line)
Basic violations (resulting in loss of the point):
Making contact with the volleyball more than three times before it passes to
the oppositions side

Hitting the ball illegally (Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc.)

If a player touches the net with any part of their body while the ball is in play
If a player reaches over the net, except under these conditions:
1. When executing a follow-through.
2. When blocking a ball which is in the opponents court but is being returned
If a team does not serve in the correct order.
If a player blocks or spikes when he is not behind the 3m line while in a back
row position
The ball lands outside the boundaries of the court.
A player touches the ball twice in succession.

Duty Team Expectations

!
!

Role Description: It is the role of the duty team to ensure that all games
(both practice and in season) run smoothly and efficiently. The duty team is
responsible for ensuring that all necessary equipment is prepared and packed
away (wherever necessary/appropriate). For each game/court the duty team
is also in charge of providing a referee, to apply the rules effectively and fairly,
and a score/time keeper, to ensure accurate scores are kept and so that
games run on time. If duty teams have an additional member they can be
used as a ball retriever.
!
What is Required:
!

Prepare and set up all equipment before and after lessons/games

(where necessary)!
!
!
!

Start and end games on time!

Collect and record the scores of games
Provide referees, scorekeepers and ball retrievers (where there is
enough duty members to do so) for all games/each court

Adapted from D. Siedentop, P. A. Hastie, and H. van der Mars, 2011, Complete Guide to
nd
Sport Education (2 ed.). Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics.

Referee Expectations
!
!

Role Description: Referees need to make certain that all players play within
the game rules in the fairest way possible. They do so by knowing,
implementing and enforcing the rules. Referees must not give one team or
performer an unfair advantage over the other.
!
What is Required:
!

Study and know the rules of volleyball!

!

Be fair to both teams and avoid playing favourites!!

!

Be firm, consistent, and fair

Explain your calls clearly to players and scorekeepers
If you are not sure on what to rule replay the point
Monitor the behavior of teams and individuals and at the conclusion of
games complete a fair play performance assessment sheet for each of
the competing teams
!

nd
Sport Education (2 ed.). Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics.

Score/time Keeper Expectations

!
!

Role Description: Score/time keepers need to maintain and record the

scores/results of games accurately as well as timing the halves and change
overs in games.
!
What is Required:
!

Use and fill out the correct score sheet !

!

!
!

Have complete focus on the game and be aware of what is going on!

Communicate effectively and confer with the referee

Record scores throughout the game and voice them after each point
At the conclusion of the game confirm the scores and have a member
from each team sign the score sheet
Submit final score sheet to the appropriate place/person (TBC)
Using a clock (preferably a stop watch) clearly indicate the end of
playing and break periods.
!

nd
Sport Education (2 ed.). Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics.

Ball Retriever Expectations

!
!

Role Description: Ball retrievers need to keep the game moving by helping
to quickly retrieve wayward balls that go beyond the bounds of play, or if
possible, providing another ball to the player who will restart the game.
!
What is Required:
!

Understand the rules pertaining to out-of-bounds plays

Have extra balls ready to hand to players in case a ball goes wayward
and needs to be retrieved. Ensure these are located in a safe position
and are not a hazard to players!
!

!
!

Actively observe and follow the games actions and anticipate potential
out-of-bounds balls!
When a ball does go wayward provide a new ball to the player before
moving to quickly retrieve the wayward ball (once retrieved return it to
where the other spare balls are located)
