Marshall Kent Wins Mens Masters at PABCON

By Matt Cannizzaro - USBC
CALI, Colombia - Team USA's Marshall Kent started with a singles score that could've been enough for
a gold medal most years at the Pan American
Bowling Confederation Adult Championships, but
he ended up just shy of the medal stand at the 2016
edition.
Instead of returning to the lanes at Bolera
Departamental disappointed, Kent knew he bowled
well and carried the momentum of a great start to
two gold medals and two silver medals, including a
Masters win to wrap up the tournament for the men.
Kent, a 23-year-old right-hander, rolled through
the 16-player Masters bracket without a loss in four
best-of-three single-elimination matches and delivered three strikes in his final frame to defeat hometown favorite, Santiago Mejia of Colombia, 2-0 in
the final.
The first game of the championships match was a
grind, with Kent winning 195-158. In the second
game, Mejia managed to strike 10 times, but splits in
the third and ninth frames proved to be his undoing as
Kent stepped up and shut him out in a 246-241 victory.
"Obviously, the main goal was to win team, but it
was a phenomenal week overall, and I don't think it
could have gone much better," said Kent, who helped
Team USA to a gold medal in team and added silver
medals this week in doubles and trios. "We came
together as a team and had a great time. It was excit-

On the way to the final, Kent defeated Venezuela's
Massimiliano Fridegotto, 2-0 (238-190, 197-163),
while Mejia topped Puerto Rico's Israel Hernandez,
2-0 (218-190, 217-188). Fridegotto and Hernandez
both earned bronze medals.
The United States claimed eight of the 19 men's
medals available at the 2016 PABCON Adult
Championships, including four gold (singles, doubles, team, Masters) and four silver (singles, doubles,
trios, all-events).

Damilyn LaCarruba, Lindenhurst, NY, 233 to 228 in
the final shootout of Long Island Generations
Bowling Tours Match Play Championships held at
Farmingdale Lanes.
Justin, in this his first LIGBT Championship win,

earned $800. Rounding out the final 4 were Ed Eng,
Flushing, NY with a 224 worth $600 and Yon Gyo
Phark, Flushing, NY 209 worth $500.
The final shootout was extremely exciting and
watched by a huge crowd. Justin started the match
with 4 out of 5 strikes while the other 3 bowlers had
a least one open frame the first half of the game. But
when Justin threw a split in the 6th frame he gave up

the lead to both Ed and Damilyn. Ed had a chance to

lock out Justin but opened in the 10th frame. Damilyn
also had a chance to win but lost 8 pins in count the
final 3 frames. Justin needed a mark in the final frame
to win and he converted a spare to claim the title.
The Farmingdale Lanes tournament drew a great
summer crowd of 178 entries plus 39 desperado
entries, advanced 34 bowlers to the finals, and paid
out an $8,000 prize fund. The tournament pattern was
Athens (40 feet) resulting in moderate cut scores:
705 at noon, 717 at 2pm, and 703 at 4pm. High series
of the tournament was shot by Darryl Freeman with a
755 in the 4pm squad. High handicap scores in the
noon squad won Brunswick balls; William Luna
(260), Frank Williams (260), and Hector Diaz Jr.
(263).

J o a n Ta y l o r s . . . . .
Te n P i n R a p . . . . .
INSIDE DICK WEBER
He was Dick Weber. THE Dick
Weber. In 1969 I saw him from a distance on a Friday night at Paramus
Bowl in a PBA tournament.
In between frames he smoked a
cigarette! I was shocked! A few
months later, our Metropolitan
Bowling Writers Association
(MBWA) held its monthly meeting in Garden City NY where the
pros were. We all sat down and I
turned to my left and there he was:
the man, the myth, the legend.
As you would expect, I started
nervously chatting and finally
caught my breath. Im sorry, Mr.
Weber, but when Im nervous I do
this. His first response, as you
would also expect was Mr. Weber
is my father (whom I met later). I
am Dick.
In a later tournament, at his
request, I sneaked some brandy to
him in a coffee cup. Who would
ever turn down a legend?
In 1995 I left a message with a
PBA Regional office that I wanted
him to be our best man at our
Reno wedding in the stadium, as I

knew he would be bowling that

week. On a Thursday when I was
typing out a column the phone
rang. Guy (husband) was always
on phone duty on Thursdays,
screening calls. He said, Phone
call. I yelled back, If its not
family or the house is burning
down I am busy. He said, Its
Dick Weber. The man called in
person to apologize that he had
several commitments for AMF
that week in addition to bowling
and regretfully couldnt participate in the wedding. This is why
people always use the word
class in the same sentence as
Dick Weber.
A final memory is when he
joined the national bowling writers group and attended our meetings during convention week in
Baton Rouge LA. We always had

a fun bowling tournament and

he participated. Before we started
he invited all of us to bowl against
him (us, with handicap) for a
friendly wager. After each game
he came around to each pair (of
lanes) with a list of our names and
wrote down our scores, irritated at
any of us who were doing well.
When we were done, those of us
who had beaten his scratch score
with our handicap scores lined up
to retrieve our dollar from him. I
was first in line and asked him to
sign my dollar. Everyone else followed suit.
Later, I asked Pete to sign that
dollar. It is one of my prized possessions, to say the least. I am sure
Dick Weber is in Heaven challenging other bowlers and griping if he
loses.
Thats what I call a thunderstorm.

came in the PBA50 South Shore

Open presented by DV8.
Weber also had second-place finishes in the PBA50 Northern California
Classic presented by MOTIV and the
PBA50 Treasure Island Resort &
Casino World Championship presented by Storm, and a fourth-place in the
season-opening Pasco County Florida
Open, which was his lowest finish of
the season.
Dont get me wrong, I threw the
ball well this year but I have to
admit I got a lot of breaks this year
and it seemed like my opponents got
the bad breaks, said Weber. It was
just one of those years. I hated to
miss those last three tournaments
because there was probably another
title there somewhere.
Webers season ended prematurely
because of a nagging hip injury that
he hopes wont be a factor as he gets
ready for the upcoming PBA Fall
Swing that starts over the Labor Day
weekend in suburban Detroit.
Its in good shape now after going
to the doctor and not bowling for a
while, Weber said. Ill probably
take another week off and have my
brother Rich do a little analysis of
how Im throwing the ball and just go
from there.
With his six wins, Weber ran his
career PBA50 Tour win total to 10
which puts him in a tie with Walter
Ray Williams Jr. for fourth place on
the all-time PBA50 Tour titles list.
John Handegard is the leader with 14
titles.
Winning POY with 457,200 points,
nearly twice Amleto Monacellis
241,680 second-place total, Weber
also led two other statistical categories by whopping margins. He
averaged a record 237.03 for 265
games and took home $73,200 in
earnings.
I had some pretty good years on
the PBA Tour where I won multiple
titles and made a lot of shows but
winning (PBA50) Player of the Year
two years in a row ranks right up
there with what I was able to accomplish on the kids tour, said Weber,
who never won player of the year on
the regular tour. The atmosphere is a

little different on the PBA50 Tour

than it is on the regular tour but I can
tell you, nobodys intimidated.
Webers closest competitor in earnings was Monacelli with $38,775.
Monacelli was the only other multiple
winner in 2016, capturing two titles,
the PBA50 Fountain Valley Open
presented by Track and the PBA50
National Championship to Benefit
Riley Hospital for Children for his
seventh PBA50 title and fourth major.
Norm Duke, the winner of the
PBA50 Treasure Island Resort &
Casino World Championship for his
third PBA50 Tour title and second
major, finished second in average,
nine pins behind Weber with 228.31.
Other players winning titles in 2016
were hall of famers Williams (Pasco
County Florida Open), Brian Voss
(Dave Smalls Championship Lanes
Classic presented by Roto Grip) and
newcomers Noel Vazquez (Northern
California Classic presented by
MOTIV) and Eddie Graham Jr.
(DeHayes
Insurance
Group
Championship presented by Pro
Bowl West and Ebonite). Voss,
Vazquez and Graham were all firsttime PBA50 Tour winners.
With their wins on the PBA50 Tour,
Weber and Williams also edged closer to the 100 overall PBA titles mark
with both players currently sitting at
99, including PBA Tour, PBA
Regional, PBA50 Tour and PBA50
Regional titles.
As the top rookie in points,
Graham, a five-time PBA Regional
titlist including the 2007 Regional
Players Invitational, earned Rookie of
the Year honors.
With his big finish, Graham also
moved into eighth place on the season-long competition points list to
qualify for the PBA50 Challenge
which will be contested on Nov. 27
and aired live on Xtra Frame as part
of the GEICO PBA World Series of
Bowling VIII in Reno. Graham will
join Weber, Monacelli, Duke,
Williams, Voss, Parker Bohn III and
Mohr in the eight-game round robin
match play event. All eight also
earned paid entries to compete in
WSOB VIII.
