Rabbi calls car vandalism a hate crime

Former D.C. Police Chief CATHY LANIER has said the department does not tolerate
anti-LGBT discrimination.
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY STROTHER GAINES

Judge dismisses part of

gay D.C. cops bias lawsuit

A federal judge on Monday dismissed three of 11 counts in a lawsuit led last

year by a gay former D.C. police ocer accusing fellow ocers and supervisors
of subjecting him to discrimination, harassment and retaliation based on his
sexual orientation.
U.S. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan dismissed the three counts in
response to a motion led in January by D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine
asserting that former Metropolitan Police Department Ocer Christopher Lilly
failed to state a valid claim that the alleged discrimination violated his First and
Fifth Amendment constitutional rights.
As part of his Sept. 26 ruling, Sullivan ordered the city to respond by Oct. 10 to the
remaining eight counts of Lillys lawsuit that still stand. Those counts charge that the
alleged discrimination, harassment, and retaliation by the MPD against Lilly violate
the D.C. Human Rights Act and Title VII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Lilly charges in his lawsuit led in May 2015 that between 2011 and 2013 he
was subjected, among other things, to repeated anti-gay name-calling and other
forms of harassment, including the placement of AIDS stickers on his locker at
the Fourth Police District, where he was stationed.
The lawsuit says the discriminatory actions began shortly after December
2010 when without plainti Lillys knowledge or consent, his sexual orientation,
homosexual, was publicized maliciously and intentionally at the Fourth District.
Following plainti Lillys outing, any ocer to come into contact with plainti
Lilly subjected him to scrutiny, retaliation and ridicule by means of vulgar
language, slandering his name and abilities to function as a police ocer and
questioning his abilities to serve due to his sexual orientation, the lawsuit says.
Police ocials and the Oce of the Attorney General, which is defending the
city against the lawsuit, have declined to comment, saying they never discuss
pending litigation. Neither Lilly nor his attorney, Sameera Ali, responded to a
request by the Blade for comment.
The citys response to the remaining counts in the lawsuit, due by Oct. 10,
would become the citys and the MPDs rst response to Lillys specic allegations
of discrimination.
The Attorney Generals court brief calling for dismissal of the lawsuits constitutional
claims limited its arguments to procedural and legal issues and did not address
Lillys claims of being subjected to anti-gay discrimination and harassment.
The Fourth District commander at the time the alleged discrimination against
Lilly occurred, Kimberly Chrisley-Missouri, has since been promoted to the rank
of deputy chief and is said to be among those under consideration to replace
Cathy Lanier as D.C.s next permanent police chief.
The lawsuit says Lilly led an internal complaint with Chrisley-Missouri
informing her of the discrimination and harassment he said he was encountering
at the Fourth District but received no response from her.

The rabbi for a D.C.-area Jewish congregation says an unknown suspect or suspects
vandalized her car parked in a private garage next to the New Carrolton Metro and
Amtrak train stations by ripping in half magnets and stickers attached to the back and
sides of the car that included messages about the Jewish faith and LGBT rights.
Rabbi Nehama Benmosche, who works part-time for Machar: The Washington
Congregation for Secular Humanistic Judaism, said that when she returned to her car in
the garage about 11:45 p.m. Saturday night, Sept. 24, she discovered the torn magnets
and stickers strewn on the ground next to the car.
Benmosche told the Washington Blade the vandal or vandals also wiped o a written
message promoting Judaism that she had written on the rear window of her car with a
felt marker.
She said the vandal or vandals did not touch one magnet that had a non-religious and
non-LGBT message on it, leading her to believe that the Jewish magnets and a Jewish
star with rainbow ag strips running across it were specically targeted.
And the car itself hadnt been scratched or vandalized in any way, which I think is an
indication that this was specically targeting the Jewish and gay stickers that I had on
the car, she said.
She said she immediately called Prince Georges County police, who dispatched
an ocer to the scene. She said shes hopeful that police will work with the parking
garages security sta that operates multiple surveillance cameras installed throughout
the garage.
I hope the police are now going to obtain the footage and go back and look at the
tape and see what happened and seek to identify one or more suspects responsible for
what she believes is an anti-Jewish and anti-gay hate crime, she told the Blade.
She said the magnets and stickers she attached mostly to the rear of her 2015 Kia
Soul were aimed at promoting her congregation and its form of progressive Judaism as
well as LGBT rights.

Local security company hires 5 trans women

An Oxon Hill, Md., based security company has hired ve transgender women as
part of an outreach program established after a security guard at a Giant Food store in
D.C. was arrested for allegedly assaulting a transgender woman for using the womens
bathroom.
The company, Washington Fields Protective Services, had no connection to the security
guard arrested at the Giant Food store on H Street, N.E. But according to longtime D.C.
transgender activist Earline Budd, one of the companys top ocials reached out to her
after observing the extensive media coverage of the arrest of the guard at the Giant.
At the time of the arrest, Giant announced that the guard, Francine Jones, 45, had
been hired and placed at the Giant by another security company.
D.C. police charged Jones with misdemeanor simple assault after receiving a 911
emergency call from Ebony Belcher, 32, who reported being forcibly ejected from the
womans bathroom and shoved out of the stores entrance by Jones.
Belcher told the Washington Blade that before physically removing her from the
store, which police said constituted an assault, Jones burst into the bathroom and began
hurling anti-transgender slurs at her, humiliating her on grounds that trans women
were not allowed to use womens restrooms in D.C.
D.C. ocials quickly rebuked that claim, pointing out that the D.C. Human Rights Act
prohibits discrimination against transgender people and allows them to use a public
bathroom that matches their gender identity.
Budd, meanwhile, said an ocial with Washington Fields Protective Services asked
her to refer prospective transgender people as candidates for the companys training
program for security guards and other security related jobs. Budd, who works as an
outreach ocial with the local social services group HIPS D.C., arranged for HIPS to refer
ve trans women to the company.
They have since completed most of the training program and have been hired by
the company. Budd said three would become security guards and two would work in
security related administrative positions.
D.C. Superior Court records show that the U.S. Attorneys oce, which is prosecuting
Jones, elevated the assault charge against her in July to a bias-related oense, which
could result in a more stringent sentence if she is convicted. Court records show her
trial was scheduled to begin on Dec. 6.

WASHINGTON More than 100 bisexual activists attended a White House

The White House said in a press release the brieng included discussions
on the steps that community leaders and administration ocials have taken
together to support bisexual Americans. It also highlighted violence, health
disparities, poverty, the Equality Act that would add sexual orientation and
gender identity to federal civil rights law and other issues.
In the past eight years the administration has worked hard to ensure that
diverse identities are protected for all Americans, including bisexuals, said the
White House press release.
The brieng took place on the last day of Bisexual Awareness Week.

Equality Fla. Pulse fund raises $9.5 million

ORLANDO, Fla. Equality Florida announced on Sept. 26 that it raised more
than $9.5 million for the victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre.
The LGBT advocacy group said it raised the funds through a GoFundMe
campaign it launched in the wake of the June 12 shooting at the gay nightclub
that left 49 people dead and 53 others injured. Equality Florida noted in its press
release that more than 120,000 donors from 120 countries contributed.
EqualityFloridamade two promises in the aftermath of Pulse. The rst was
to do everything we could to take care of the survivors and the families left
behind by this heinous act of hate. Today weve kept that rst promise, said
Equality Florida CEO Nadine Smith in the press release. Now our attention must
focus entirely on fullling the second promise to honor our dead with action.
Thoughts, prayers and symbols are not enough. We will ensure the lasting
memorial is the real change of uprooting anti-LGBT hatred, discrimination and
violence in our culture.
The Equality Florida fund merged with the OneOrlando Fund, which the city of
Orlando established after the Pulse nightclub.
The Orlando Sentinel reported the OneOrlando Fund has raised more than
$29 million. The families of the 49 victims will each receive $350,000 from it.

Calif. bans official travel to anti-LGBT states

SACRAMENTO, Calif. California Gov. Jerry Brown on Sept. 27 signed a bill
that bans taxpayer-funded travel to states with anti-LGBT laws.
The Associated Press reported Assembly Bill 1887 prohibits California
agencies from requiring their employees to travel to states with anti-LGBT laws.
The measure also applies to California state universities.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued an executive order banning ocial travel
to North Carolina in response to the approval of House Bill 2, which bans
transgender people from using public restrooms that are consistent with their
gender identity and prohibits local municipalities from enacting LGBT-inclusive
nondiscrimination measures. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo instituted a similar
ban after North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed the measure into law.

More than 34,000 transgender Americans

in eight states could be prevented from
voting in the November 2016 election
because of strict voter identication laws
that require voters to present governmentissued photo IDs at the polls, according to a
newly released report.
The report, prepared by the Williams
Institute, an LGBT think tank aliated
with the UCLA School of Law, says
many transgender people who have
transitioned from one gender to another
do not have identication that accurately
reects their correct gender.
Lawmakers and election ocials
should not overlook the impact on
transgender voters when enacting
voting restrictions based on identity
documents, said Williams Institute
Scholar Jody L. Herman, author of the
report, The Potential Impact of Voter
Identication on Transgender Voters in
the 2016 General Election.
Voter ID laws impact many citizens
who would otherwise be eligible to vote,
Herman said. Transgender people have
unique, and sometimes insurmountable,
burdens to obtaining accurate IDs for
voting in states that require it.
The report says 34 U.S. states have
passed some form of voter identication
laws but the strictest of them come from
eight states: Alabama, Georgia, Indiana,
Kansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia
and Wisconsin.
The greatest potential problem for
transgender people, the report says,
is the requirement of the voter ID laws
in these states that people present a
government-issued photo ID.
In voter ID states that do not have the
strict photo ID requirement, voters have
options available to them to comply with
the law other than showing a photo ID,
the report says.
A 2006 study found that 11 percent of
U.S. citizens did not have governmentissued
photo
identication,
with
minorities, the elderly, and those who
have lower incomes being less likely than
others to have government-issued photo
identication, the report states.
Transgender people who have
transitioned face additional burdens
to acquiring or updating identication

that would fulll voter ID requirements

because they must comply with
requirements for updating the name and
gender on their state-issue or federally
issued IDs and records, according to the
report. Requirements for updating stateissued IDs vary widely by state and can be
dicult and costly.
The report says it bases its ndings
related to number of trans voters on
the most recent data from the National
Transgender
Discrimination
Survey
(NTDS), which is conducted by the
National LGBTQ Task Force and the
National Center for Transgender Equality.
While the NTDS cannot be considered a
representative sample of the transgender
population, it represents the best
available data to estimate the number of
voting-eligible transgender citizens who
could face barriers to voting or possible
disenfranchisement in the November
2016 election, the report says.
It says one of the ndings of the DTDS
was that 27 percent of transgender
citizens who have transitioned report
they had no identication documents or
records that list their correct gender.
If that rate holds true for the current U.S.
population, about 261,000 transgender
citizens who have transitioned have
no updated identication records, the
report says. Transgender people of color,
youth, students, people with low incomes
and people with disabilities were more
likely than the average NTDS respondent
to have no updated identication
documents or records, it says.
The National Center for Transgender
Equality argues in a voting checklist
guide for trans voters that a pre-transition
photo ID for a transgender person should
be acceptable at polling places, even if
the voter presents themselves as being of
a gender dierent from the ID.
As long as the relevant voter data (usually
the name and address) matches one of the
acceptable forms of ID, the voter has the
right to vote, NCTE says in its checklist
guide aimed at poll workers. Please do not
be distracted by gender presentation when
you are evaluating a voters identity and
eligibility to vote, it says.
Dierent clothing, makeup or hairstyle
on an ID photo is not a valid reason to
deny a regular ballot, the guide says.
Voters may look dierent today than on
their photo ID for many reasons.
In cases where a state polling place may
steadfastly demand that a governmentissued photo ID reect the correct gender
of the voter, NCTE oers a separate guide
on how to obtain a new or updated form
of identication.

Judge to Ohio school: Treat Jane Doe as the girl she is

Order latest decision
on restroom use
for trans students
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A federal judge has ruled in favor of a
transgender elementary school student
seeking to use the restroom consistent
with her gender identity, marking the
latest such decision in disputes between
schools and students on the issue.
In a 43-page decision, U.S. District
Judge Algenon Marbley, a Clinton
appointee, found denying the student,
identied as Jane Doe, from using the
restroom consistent with her gender
identity violates Title IX of the Education
Amendments of 1972, a law barring
gender discrimination in schools.
Marbley orders Highland Elementary

School to treat Jane Doe as the girl she

is, which includes referring to her by
female pronouns in addition to allowing
her to use the girls restroom.
The ruling is the result of a lawsuit the
school led in Juneseeking to overturnan
order from the Obama administration
requiring ocials to treat Jane Doe
consistent with her gender identity.
In response to the lawsuit, attorneys
representing Jane Doe led a lawsuit
seeking an order requiring the school to
comply with the Obama administration.
Writing Jane Doe would be irreparably
harmed absent an injunction, Marbley
grants the request made by her attorneys,
but denies the request for a preliminary
injunction in favor of the school.
The stigma and isolation Jane feels
when she is singled out and forced to
use a separate bathroom contribute
to and exacerbate her mental-health
challenges, Marbley writes. This is a
clear case of irreparable harm to an

eleven-year-old girl.
The decision comes on the heels
of a ruling last week from a federal
judge in Wisconsin ordering Kenosha
Unied School District to allow a male
transgender student to use the restroom
consistent with his gender identity.
The ruling also follows an order from
a federal court in Texas enjoining the
Obama administration from enforcing
guidance instructing schools to allow
transgender students to use the
restroom consistent with their gender
identity. (Marbleys decision comes on the
same day the judge ordered a hearing on
Friday to clarify the scope of the decision
in response to a request from the Justice
Department.)
Representing Jane Doe in the case is the
National Center for Lesbian Rights as well
as the Cleveland-based law rm Hickman
& Lowder and the New York-based law
rm Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. The U.S.
Justice Department andPrincipal Deputy

Assistant Attorney Generalfor Civil Rights

Vanita Gupta are named as defendants.
Asaf Orr, who represented Jane Doe
asa sta attorney for theNational Center
for Lesbian Rights transgender youth
project, said the decision is consistent
with ensuring all students are free from
discrimination at school.
Every student has a right to be free from
discrimination and harassment while at
school, and we are pleased the court has
taken this important step in protecting
Jane Does rights, Orr said. As the case
proceeds, we will continue to vigorously
work to protect our clients rights.
Representing Highland Elementary
School is West Chester, Ohio-based
Langdon Law, the Manseld, Ohio-based
Renwick, Welsh & Burton LLC and the
anti-LGBT Alliance Defending Freedom.
Attorneys representing the schools have
already led notice with the court indicating
they intend to appeal the decision to the
U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Obama nominates DeLaurentis as Cuba ambassador

Likely to face steep
congressional opposition
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
President
Obama
on
Tuesday
nominated Jerey DeLaurentis to become
the rst U.S. ambassador to Cuba in more
than 50 years.
Jes leadership has been vital throughout
the normalization of relations between
the United States and Cuba, said Obama
in a statement the White House released.
The appointment of an ambassador is
a common sense step forward toward a
more normal and productive relationship
between our two countries.
DeLaurentis, a career diplomat, began
his latest post in Havana in August
2014. Obama announced four months
later the U.S. would begin the process
of normalizing relations with Cuba that
ended in 1961.
DeLaurentis ocially became the chief of
mission at the U.S. Embassy in Havana in July
2015 with the ocial restoration of diplomatic
relations between the two countries.
Cuban Foundation for LGBTI Rights
President Nelson Gandulla is among the
independent Cuban activists who have met
with DeLaurentis. The U.S. government
granted Orqudea Martnez, the mother
of Alejandro Barrios Martnez, a Cuban
national who was among the victims of
the June massacre at the Pulse nightclub
in Orlando, Fla., a visa that allowed her to

attend her sons funeral in Florida.

He has expressed his interest in
learning about the problems facing the
Cuban LGBTI community, Gandulla told
the Washington Blade on Tuesday. He
has expressed his support for the work
that we are doing in Cuba.
Members of the Gay Mens Chorus of
Washington and the Gay Mens Chorus
of Los Angeles met with DeLaurentis in
Havana in July 2015 and in March of this
year respectively. Evan Wolfson, founder
of Freedom to Marry, and Freedom to
Work President Tico Almeida sat down

with DeLaurentis in May while they were

in the Cuban capital to attend events
around the International Day Against
Homophobia and Transphobia.
President Obama has made an
outstanding choice for U.S. Ambassador to
Cuba, Almeida told the Blade on Tuesday
in a statement. For Cuban Americans
like me who travel regularly to visit our
family members in Cuba, its important to
know that we have such a smart and well
respected diplomat representing us and
Americas interests and values during this
historic process of normalizing relations

and opening new opportunities for both

Americans and Cubans.
U.S. Sen. Je Flake (R-Ariz.) and
Minnesota Congressman Tom Emmer
have applauded DeLaurentis nomination,
even though it faces an uphill battle in
Congress from lawmakers who oppose
the normalization of relations between
Washington and Havana.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who is
of Cuban descent, has previously said he
would block any potential ambassador to
Cuba that Obama nominated. The Florida
Republican reiterated his opposition in a
statement his oce issued on Tuesday.
This nomination should go nowhere
until the Castro regime makes signicant
and irreversible progress in the areas of
human rights and political freedom for
the Cuban people, said Rubio, according
to Politico.
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), whose
father was born in Cuba, is also a vocal critic
of the normalization of relations between
the U.S. and the Communist island.
Its great to see Republicans like Sen.
Je Flake and Rep. Tom Emmer praising
Mr. DeLaurentis, and it would be shameful
for hardliners like Ted Cruz and Marco
Rubio to continue re-litigating old and tired
debates by obstructing President Obamas
excellent choice, Almeida told the Blade.
Rather than wasting time obstructing this
nomination, Cruz and Rubio should take
their rst ever trip to Cuba to meet with
Cuban entrepreneurs and citizens who
will overwhelmingly tell them its long past
time to end the failed embargo.

HILLARY CLINTON called HB2 mean-spirited.

WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY DAMIEN SALAS

Clinton: N.C. anti-LGBT

law has hurt people
Taking a victory lap after a debate performance widely regarded as a win against
Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton held a campaign rally in Raleigh, N.C., on Tuesday in
which she said the states recently enacted anti-LGBT law has hurt people.
Emphasizing to the crowd the stakes of the upcoming election, Clinton said
passage of House Bill 2 under Gov. Pat McCrory has harmed not only businesses,
but individuals in North Carolina.
Right here in North Carolina, the very mean-spirited, wrong-headed decision
by your legislature and governor to pass and sign House Bill 2 has hurt this state,
but more than that, its hurt people, Clinton said. It sent a message to so many
people that, well, you know, youre not really wanted, youre not really part of us.
To loud applause from her audience, Clinton added, I think the American
Dream is big enough for everybody.
Signed by McCrory after a single day of consideration by the state legislature,
House Bill 2 bans pro-LGBT non-discrimination ordinances in the state,
undoing one recently enacted in Charlotte, and prohibits transgender people
from using the public restroom in schools and government buildings consistent
with their gender identity.
Enactment of the law resulted in consternation in the business community; many
businesses cancelled activities and expansion plans in North Caroliina as a result of
the law. Following decisions from the National Collegiate Athletic Association and
the Atlantic Coast Conference to cancel championship games in the state, a report
in Wired magazine estimated the law has cost the state $400 million.
Clinton has denounced HB2 multiple times at rallies in North Carolina.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has said hes with the state on the issue.
On the same day Clinton made the remarks, the campaign of Democratic
gubernatorial candidate Roy Cooper, whos pledged to repeal HB2, made public
a video of McCrory blaming others except for himself over the anti-LGBT law.

Obama headlines Clinton LGBT fundraiser

On the day President Obama was set to attend a high-dollar D.C. fundraiser for LGBT
donors, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Obama would make the case for
a legacy that can be built on under a Clinton administration.
Under questioning from the Washington Blade on Tuesday, Earnest described the
fundraiser as a rather small event, which is why he said it isnt open to the press, and said
Obama will discuss with those in attendance the importance of the upcoming election.
The president will spend his time in discussion with those who are attending the
event in talking about something youve heard the president talk about a lot before,
which is the stakes in this election, how important it is for Democrats to stand up for our
values and ght in support of a candidate thats seeking to advance them, Earnest said.
Recalling Obama has already spoken a lot publicly about his support for Hillary
Clinton, Earnest said he expects the president to reiterate that pitch once again.
As the Blade reported last week, the fundraiser where the cheapestticket is$33,400
is titled LGBT Allies and Discussion and is set to take place at the D.C. home of
lesbian coupleKaren Dixon and Nan Schaer, majorsupporters of LGBT rights and the

Democratic Party.
One issue that could emerge is the possibility of appointing an openly LGBT Cabinet
member in the next administration, which is an achievement that has yet to occur even
during the Obama era despite its record number of at least 300 LGBT appointees.
Asked what Obama would say in response to that issue, or any kind of achievements
in LGBT rights sought by those in attendance, Earnest touted the general diversity of
appointees in the administration, saying Obama is quite proud of appointing senior
ocials in his administration that reect the diversity of the country.
Whether you evaluate that diversity based on race, or religion, or sexual orientation,
the presidents record surpasses that of his predecessors, and hes quite proud of that
legacy, Earnest said.
Earnest added Obama believes thats a legacy that can be built on, but deferredto
Clinton for the kinds of appointments that she would choose to make if she were
elected president.
Clinton has expressed a commitment to advancing and protecting LGBT rights
over the course of her campaign, but hasnt explicitly said whether shed be open to
appointing an openly LGBT Cabinet member.

Obama appointees celebrate at LGBT44 Reunion

As President Obamas tenure in the White House draws to a close, 150 of the record
number of openly LGBT appointees in his administration took part in events over the
weekend to celebrate its achievements.
Attendees at the rst-ever LGBT44 Reunion gathered to network, discuss career
opportunities and recognize the administrations eight years of achievements on LGBT rights.
Gautam Raghavan, a gay former White House LGBT liaison in attendance at the
reunion, said LGBT achievements under the Obama administration including Dont
Ask, Dont Tell repeal, marriage equality and increased access for transgender people
to health care camein large part thanks to LGBT appointees.
Theres a saying in the Obama administration: People are policy, Raghavan said.
Thats especially true for the progress weve seen on LGBT equality under this president.
Everywhere weve seen pro-LGBT change, weve had members of our community at the
table. Over the last eight years, LGBT public servants across government have helped
lead tremendous change like implementing marriage equality, expanding access to
health care, and advancing international LGBT human rights, as well as moving the ball
forward at agencies like USDA, Interior, and Treasury.
On Friday, attendees of the LGBT44 Reunion gathered at Republic Restoratives
distillery, co-owned by former Department of Homeland Security ocial Pia Carusone,
where Army Secretary Eric Fanning as well as Arcus Foundation CEO and former
Education Department leader Kevin Jennings gave remarks.
On Saturday, attendees met at the Human Rights Campaign headquarters for a daylong event, which included remarks by Gay & Lesbian Victory Institute Vice President
Ruben Gonzales and federal Chief Technology Ocer Megan Smith, the highest-ranking
out woman in the administration. Secretary of Housing & Urban Development Julin
Castro made a surprise appearance at the event.
Mira Patel, a lesbian and former adviser to Hillary Clinton, was among the LGBT
appointees in attendance at the event.
LGBT44 is as much about recognizing the community that served President Obama
over the past eight years as it is also focused on leading future administrations to
advance equality and opportunity for all Americans, Patel said.

Colombian govt, FARC sign peace deal

The Colombian government and a rebel group on Monday formally signed a
peace deal that seeks to end Latin Americas longest-running war.
President Juan Manuel Santos and Rodrigo Timochenko Londoo,
commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, signed the accord
during a ceremony in the Colombian city of Cartagena.
What we signed today is a declaration from the people that we have had
enough of war, said Santos.
The Associated Press reported U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, U.S.
Secretary of State John Kerry, Cuban President Ral Castro, Chilean President
Michelle Bachelet and former Spanish King Juan Carlos are among the 2,500
foreign dignitaries who attended the ceremony. Those in the crowd chanted,
Yes we did and No more war as Londoo and Santos spoke.
More than 200,000 people died in the war that began in 1962.
Members of the FARC, paramilitaries and the Colombian army frequently
targeted, displaced or even killed LGBT people during the conict. Anglica
Lozano, who is the rst openly LGBT person elected to the Colombian Congress,
is a former advisor to ngrid Betancourt, who was kidnapped by FARC rebels in
2002 during her presidential campaign.
Representatives of Colombia Diversa and Caribe Armativo two Colombian
advocacy groups participated in the peace talks between the Colombian
government and the FARC that began in Havana in 2012.
The 297-page peace deal the Colombian government and the FARC formalized
last month in the Cuban capital specically acknowledges the wars LGBT victims.
It also notes the fundamental rights of LGBT Colombians and other vulnerable
groups and calls for their inclusion in the creation of a democratic culture and
participation in the country.
The conict made our quality of life more dicult, said Caribe Armativo
Director Wilson Castaeda on Monday during a panel discussion in Cartagena.
We were not considered citizens before the conict.
A referendum on the peace deal will take place on Oct. 2. Colombia Diversa,
Caribe Armativo and more than 100 LGBT advocacy groups have launched a
campaign that urges Colombians to vote for it.
We are very emotional, Castaeda told the Washington Blade after Santos
and Londoo signed the deal. We are very happy to know that the war has
ended and that now the road to equality will be much easier.
It is the feeling of knowing that we conquered fear and pain and violence and
we are once again moving forward with great hope, he added.

Thousands march against gay marriage in Mexico

Opponents of marriage rights for same-sex couples marched in Mexico City last week.
The National Front for the Family, which organized the march, said in a press release
that 215,000 people took part. Reuters cited Mexico City authorities who said around
20,000 people participated in the march.
The protesters demonstrated their belief in the institution of natural marriage, which
is built upon the stable and complementary relationship between a man and a woman,
said the National Front for the Family. At the same time, they recognized the right of

children to have a dad and a mom and recalled that adoption is not a right for adults.
The march took place roughly four months after President Enrique Pea Nieto
announced that he would seek to amend the Mexican constitution to allow same-sex
marriage and adoption across the country.
The Mexican Congress would have to consider the proposed amendment. Two-thirds
of each chamber would have to support it and half of the countrys 31 states would have
to ratify it.
Diego von Stauenberg of the National Organization for Marriage and roughly a
dozen others gathered outside the Mexican Embassy in D.C. on Friday to show their
support for the National Front for the Family. Pilar Vazquez Calda, a D.C. resident who
is originally from Mexico City, submitted a petition to Mexican Ambassador to the U.S.
Carlos Sada Solana that expresses opposition to the proposed amendment.
We should defend the institution (of marriage,) Vazquez told the Blade.
NOM President Brian Brown was in Mexico City on Saturday. Von Stauenberg told
the Blade that he did not take part in the protest.
He happens to be in Mexico as an observer, said von Stauenberg.
Same-sex couples can legally marry in Mexico City and in several states across the country.
The Mexican Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that laws banning same-sex marriage are
discriminatory.

Iraqi militants use social media to lure, kill gays

Members of a Shiite militant group in Iraq have reportedly killed 11 gay men in
Baghdad since Sept. 1.
Ayaz Hassan, a human rights activist from the city of Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan,
told the Washington Blade this week during a telephone interview that members of
Asaib Ahl al-Haq are using Grindr and Facebook to talk to gays in Baghdad.
Hassan said the militants send messages to people they suspect are gay. He told the
Blade that the militants convince them to go out on dates after sending them pictures
of themselves.
They take them away and they kill them, said Hassan.
Asaib Ahl al-Haq, which is also known as the Khazali Network, is a branch of Al-Hashd
al-Shabi, a group that is aliated with former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. The
organization split from the Madhi Army, another Shiite militia run by prominent cleric
Muqtada al-Sadr, in 2004.
Al-Sadr in July issued a decree that bans his followers from committing violence
against LGBT people. A gay Iraqi man who lives in D.C. told the Blade this week the
Baghdad killings are a reaction to the order.
Muqtadas opinion totally worked against the LGBTQ community in Iraq, he said.
He has many haters in Iraq.
Anti-LGBT violence is commonplace throughout Iraq.
The so-called Islamic State has publicly executed dozens of men accused of committing
sodomy in portions of the country under its control. The gay Iraqi man in D.C. with
whom the Blade spoke said militants kidnapped his friend in 2011 after they set up a
fake date with him.
They have been doing this for a long time in Baghdad, he said.
Hassan told the Blade the killings have sparked fear among gay Iraqis in Baghdad and
around the country.
Its terrifying, he said from Sulaymaniyah. Every gay man I know is terried, even here.
I am so scared here, added Hassan, telling the Blade gay Iraqis are too afraid to use
Grindr. Its so dangerous.

Clinton strong, Trump baffles in rst debate

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

with remarks about Clintons adviser

Sidney Blumenthal. Moderator and
NBC News anchor Lester Holt sought to
redirect Trump by saying, Were talking
about racial healing in this segment.
On cybersecurity, Clinton said Russia
and independent groups are problems, but
Trump oered a bizarreresponse,sayinga
400-pound person could have hacked
the Democratic National Committee and
his 10-year-old son whom he said is
good with computers demonstrates the
dangers of cyberwarfare.
Even though Trump many times fell
apart on his own accord, Clinton landed
a few jabs with barbed comments
throughout the night.
One of Clintons strongest criticisms
of Trump concerned his promoting
birtherism, or the idea that President
Obama wasnt born in the United
States and therefore wasnt legitimate.
Trump has recently conceded Obama
was born in the United States, but has
never explained why he shifted his view
orapologized for promotingthe idea that
is widely viewed as racist.
He has really started his political
activity based on this racist lie that
our rst black president was not an
American citizen, Clinton said. There
was absolutely no evidence for it, but he
persisted, he persisted year after year,
because some of his supporters, people
that he was trying to bring into his fold,
apparently believed it or wanted to
believe it.
Clinton criticized Trump for not
making his tax returns public as she
has, speculating that may be because
hes not as rich or charitable as he says
he is, he owes money to Wall Street and
foreign banks, or because hes paid no
federal taxes. In response, Trump says
hell release his tax returns when Clinton
makes public the 33,000personal emails
she deleted, even though releasing
tax returns has been customary for
presidents for decades.
Trump sought to attack Clinton,
but with quips that only undermined
himself. When Clinton chided Trump for
saying the 2008 Wall Street collapse and
the job losses that followed would be
good for his investments, Trump replied,
Thats called business by the way. When
Clinton said Trump is dangerous for
saying hed blow Iranians out of the water
for taunting U.S. sailors, Trump replied,
That would not start a war.
Concluding an exchange about nuclear
policy, Clinton remarked a man who can
be baited with a tweet should not be in
charge of the U.S. arsenal. Trump replied,
That line is getting a little old, but Clinton
got the better of him and said,Its a good

one, though. Well describes the problem.

The two found agreement on one issue,
the passage of no y, no buy legislation
to ensure individuals on the terror watch
list are unable to purchase a rearm.
Clinton identied that as a proposal to
address gun violence and Trump, who
was endorsed by the National Rie
Association, said he agrees.
Under pressure about whether to serve
as a fact-checker duringthe debate, Holt
pointed out the record shows otherwise
when Trump maintained he opposed the
2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. Trump never
made a public statement in opposition
to the war before the invasion, and,
as Buzzfeed reported in a now widely
circulated report, armed to Howard
Stern in 2002 he backed the eort.
In response, Trump concocted new
evidence that he says demonstrates he
opposed the war: Conversationshe had at
the time with conservative commentator
Sean Hannity, who now serves as an
adviser for the Trump campaign.

presidential debates.

Clinton hailed as winner

at D.C. debate parties
Nearly everyone cheered and applauded loudly each time
Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton made a
point they deemed important and groaned nearly as loudly
when GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump sought to
dispute or criticize Clintons remarks.
That was the sentiment during at least three debate
parties Monday night, two of which were held at the D.C. gay
bars Number Nine and Nellies and one at an L Street, N.W.,
restaurant hosted by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and
two other LGBT supportive groups.
Hillary is crushing him unquestionably, said a D.C.
resident who identied himself as Teddy and who joined
about 200 or more others in watching the debate in the rstoor and upstairs rooms at Number Nine, the gay bar at
1435 P St., N.W.
Shes prepared, shes experienced. And there is no
question that Donald Trump is so unqualied for this
position, said Teddy.
The debate watch party at Number Nine was hosted by the
Human Rights Campaign.
About two miles away at Stoneys restaurant and bar
at 2102 L St., N.W., gay activist John Klenert said he was
impressed with Clintons performance just 15 minutes
after NBC News moderator Lester Holt asked the very rst
question of the evening.
So far I see Mr. Trump acting totally non-presidential,
Klenert said. Asked how Clinton was doing, he said, Very
good. She is holding her own and coming out with good facts
and good ideas.
The debate watch party at Stoneys was hosted by the Gay
and Lesbian Victory Fund, a national group that raises money
to elect LGBT candidates to public oce, along with the LGBT

supportive groups Latino Victory Fund and Environmental

Defense Fund Action.
Like the crowds at Number Nine and Nellies, at 900 U St.,
N.W., the close to 200 or more people packed into Stoneys
were overwhelmingly supportive of Clinton.
The few known Trump supporters that turned out for
Monday nights LGBT debate parties assembled in one of the
upstairs rooms at Nellies, according to Chris Allen, president
of the D.C. Chapter of the national LGBT group Log Cabin
Republicans. Allen and D.C. Log Cabin board member Andrew
Desser were among about a dozen Log Cabin members
who watched the debate at Nellies. Their attendance came
less than a week after the D.C. Log Cabin group voted not
to recommend that the national Log Cabin group endorse
Trump for president.
I think in this rst debate Hillary was very prepared and
Donald continued with his just kind of playing it by ear o the
cu, Allen said. I dont think it earned him any new voters
and I dont think it detracted any votes, he said.
Desser has said he is considering voting for Trump. At
Monday nights debate party he said he was surprised that
Trump didnt raise issues that could have resonated against
Clinton, including her backing away from some of the policies
of her husband, President Bill Clinton.
I think it was pretty clear that he was not prepared
tonight, he said of Trump. Im pretty certain I will not vote
for Hillary, added Desser. Its not because I dont think Hillary
Clinton is prepared to be president. I just disagree with her
on a fundamental host of issues.
Back at Number Nine, gay activist Jerey Hops said he had
no second thoughts about voting for Clinton as the debate
neared its completion.
I think Hillary is blowing Donald Trump out of the water,
he said. And Hillary is showing how signicantly more adept
she is than he can ever be. And I think the public response
will certainly support that.

Trump reiterates support for First Amendment Defense Act

have put these protections in jeopardy.

If I am elected president and Congress
passes the First Amendment Defense
Act, I will sign it to protect the deeply
held religious beliefs of Catholics and the
beliefs of Americans of all faiths.
Trump doesnt identify which executive
orders he thinks are issued by presidents
who have no regard for the Constitution,
but from the context of the paragraph,
he implies a reference Obamas LGBT
executive order because the initial version
of the First Amendment Defense Act
would have undermined that directive.
(The most recent version of the bill has
language that wouldnt aect federal forprot contracting.) Trump has said he
would repeal executive orders he deems
unconstitutional, which could include
Obamas LGBT directive.
In addition to expressing opposition to
abortion rights and Common Core, the
statement reiterates Trumps pledge to
appoint justices to the Supreme Court in
the mold of the late U.S. Associate Justice
Antonin Scalia, who dissented in rulings
against DOMA, state bans on same-sex
marriage and state laws criminalizing
same-sex relations.
Judicial
nominations,
particularly
appointments to the United States
Supreme Court, are one of the most
critical issues of this election, Trump

said. I will appoint Justices to the

Supreme Court like the late and beloved
great Catholic thinker and jurist, Justice
Antonin Scalia, who will strictly interpret
the Constitution and not legislate from
the bench.
Meanwhile, the top name in the list of
members of the new Catholic advisory
group is Santorum, whose long anti-LGBT
recordcan be traced to a 2003 interview
in which he infamously compared
homosexuality in 2003 to man on child,
man on dog behavior.
In his most recent bid for the Republican
presidential nomination, Santorum said

hed ignore the U.S. Supreme Court

decision against the anti-gay Defense of
Marriage Act and compared the ruling in
favor of marriage equality nationwide to
the 1857 Dred Scott decision determining
slaves are property.
Santorum was among the candidates
in the 2016 election who signed a pledge
with the anti-LGBT National Organization
for Marriage to oppose same-sex
marriage and back a U.S. constitutional
amendment against it. The candidate
also pledged to push during his rst 100
days in the White House for passage of
the First Amendment Defense Act.
Trump, perhaps wrongly, gained a
reputation for being a relatively a proLGBT Republican presidential candidate
in part for refusing to sign these pledges,
but now has brought inside his campaign
a rival who did sign them.
Another member of Trumps advisory
group is Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback,
who fought the ruling in favor of samesex marriage in his state, rescinded an
executive order prohibiting anti-LGBT
discrimination against state employees
and signed into law a religious freedom
bill against LGBT students.
Other members are four sitting members
of Congress: Reps. Andrew Harris (R-Md.),

Steve Chabot (R-Ohio), Mike Kelly (R-Pa.)

and Sean Duy (R-Wis.). Harris, Chabot
and Kelly are co-sponsors of the First
Amendment Defense Act, but Duy is not.
Trumps Catholic Advisory Group is
similar to the evangelical advisory group
he created in June that gave top billing to
former presidential candidate and Rep.
Michele Bachmann, who also has an antiLGBT reputation.
Marianne
Duddy-Burke,
executive
director of the pro-LGBT Catholic group
DignityUSA, said she doesnt recognize all
35 names on the council, but many whose
presence among Trumps chosen advisors
on Catholicism raise grave concern.
It seems to be a group hand-picked by
the U.S.Conference of Catholic Bishops
anti-LGBTQ, anti-womens rights, for
the expansion of religious exemptions,
Duddy-Burke said. Among them are
people well known for anti-LGBTQ
statements and actions, including Rick
Santorum, Marjorie Dannensfelser, and
Austin Ruse. Overall, this seems to be a
blatant attempt to court conservative
Catholics, to shore up Trumps antichoice credentials, and to show himself
as aligned with Catholic doctrine.

Soaring HIV rate among gays in China

BEIJING As HIV infections soar in China among gay men according to a new
report, health ocials there are grappling with how to best address it, the Wall
Street Journal reports.
A report from health authorities in Nanchang, a city of ve million, said the
HIV infection rate among college students there grew 43 percent annually in the
past ve years, the Journal reports. More than 80 percent of those cases came
from male same-sex encounters. It was a small sample 135 infections and
seven deaths across 37 colleges but its eect was strong in the country that
until 2001 classied homosexuality as a mental illness and where there was little
public discussion of gay issues or rights, the Journal reports.
In the early days of Chinas AIDS epidemic, drug users and sex workers were
the main patients. A decade ago, men who have sex with men accounted for less
than one percent of new HIV infections in China, according to government data.
In 2015, they made up 27 percent. In the U.S., gay and bisexual men account for
about 67 percent of new HIV infections, according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
More alarmingly, while the total number of people living with HIV in China is
still smaller than that of the U.S. about 575,000 compared with 1.2 million
it is growing faster, at a rate of around 100,000 a year compared with around
40,000 in the U.S., government data from both countries show. The rate of
new infections peaked in the U.S., which health ocials attribute to eective
prevention and testing, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Trans clinic for kids to open in Seattle

SEATTLE Seattle Childrens Hospital is set to open a gender services clinic
for transgender children as young as 8 years old, KIRO 7, a Cox Media Group
outlet, reports.
Administrators say the new clinic will open sometime in October with services
that include puberty blockers, hormone therapy and mental health support.
Seattle Childrens says it will be the rst time in Washington state that
transgender children entering puberty will have a clinic where they can go to
for coordinated care. The hospital will only be the fth in the country to oer to
have such a clinic. The clinic will not perform surgeries, KIRO 7 reports.
The clinic has attracted criticism. A study from the New Atlantis claims only
a minority of children who experience cross-gender identication will continue
to do so into adolescence or adulthood, but a study from the University
of Washington claims that trans-identied children have normal levels of
depression and anxiety if they have family support.

Truvada use has nancial benets: study

TORONTO A new study claims there are nancial benets to the preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drug Truvada in addition to its benets at preventing
HIV infection, Health Canal reports.
Researchers at St. Michaels Hospital developed a mathematical model to
evaluate the impact of PrEP on the number of new HIV infections among gay
men in Toronto, the number of HIV-related deaths averted and the cost impact
on the health-care system. Their ndings were published online last week in the
Journal of the International AIDS Society.
Previous studies have found that a daily dose of Truvada, a Health-Canada
approved preventative oral medication, could reduce HIV acquisition in men who
have sex with men by 44 percent, or as much as 99 percent with high adherence.
The model developed at St. Michaels suggests that over 20 years, PrEP use
in 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent of the highest risk gay men would prevent 1,166,
2,154, 2,816 and 3,012 new HIV infections, and 70, 117, 137, and 140 HIVassociated deaths respectively. The estimated cost of implementing PrEP would
increase as more high-risk men used it, from $80 million with 25 percent PrEP
coverage to $270 million with 100 percent PrEP coverage, Health Canal reports.
Despite that cost, the study claims the health care system would save $11,359
per infection prevented with 100 percent coverage, Health Canal reports.

No more excuses
Most reasons to avoid the gym dont hold up to scrutiny

DAVID MAGIDA is founder of Elevate Interval

Fitness, a member of the Reebok Spartan Race Pro
Team and author of The Essentials of Obstacle
Racing: A Beginners Guide. You can catch a class
with him at Elevate on 14th Street or at its new
location in the Mosaic District in Fairfax, Va.

In life, we have many goals and

wants. We want a well-paying job, a
beautiful place to live and nice things.
We know that to get there its going to
take sacrice and hard work.
Youll have to give up some of
your free time, pass on some of your
dreams or things your passionate
about and skip spending on frivolous
things in order to direct your money
toward more expensive assets. In
this regard, most of us are similar.
We look at our nancial situation and

acknowledge that we must make sacrices.

But what about when it comes to our health and tness? Why, all of a sudden do
so many people throw up their hands, make up excuses and not take the necessary
steps? It could be for any number of reasons but I have a hard truth for you: Your
excuses are invalid. When did anything become more important than your health?
When did our priorities become so skewed? Your health is your wealth.
In my time operating a tness studio, Ive heard all kinds of excuses for why people
cant consistently train their bodies. Some bear more weight than others, but the
reality is if you believe these excuses, youre lying to yourself.
Lets address some of the most common.
I dont have time: In life, we make time for the things that matter. You had time
to grab beers with your coworkers at happy hour. You had time to watch the football
game on Sunday or catch an episode of your favorite show. You really couldnt nd
an hour three times each week to commit to improving your physical health? Couldnt
wake up an hour earlier, skipped drinks or used your lunch break to ensure you live
longer and have more time in this world? Not to mention, blow o some stress with
a good workout? Because make no mistake, you will live longer if you regularly train.
And your work productivity will improve when you consistently exercise. Its a proven
fact. So youll probably end up having more time if you exercise regularly, particularly
if you join a studio that oers eective, ecient one-hour classes.
I cant aord it: Most boutique studios charge somewhere between $100-200
each month for a monthly membership. In some regards, its a lot of money. Its fair
to say you should watch your expenses and know the value of a buck. But think about
how much you spend on Friday nights going to dinner; at happy hour each week.
Those expenses add up.
And think about the value you could be getting from a boutique tness studio.
Not just access to a gym, but guidance. Scripted classes led by a coach who will help
motivate you, keep you honest and maybe even check your technique. A personal
trainer would cost you four times that. Youll never have to wait in line for equipment.
You have equipment designated for you. Youll have a group of people doing the
same workout as you in the same room at the same time. Looks like you just scored
yourself some training partners. And who knows, maybe youll forge bonds with those
people, and all of a sudden, your social circle has expanded in a city where its not that
easy to make new friends. Surely theres value in the social side as well.
Once you make the investment in yourself to work out consistently, youll nd that
you save quite a bit of money on the back end. Youll work out instead of going to
happy hour. Youll go to bed early instead of going out at night because you know you
have a tough workout the next morning. Youll recoup the cost of your membership
on those savings alone.
Its too hard: Strange that were willing to do dicult things for work and dicult
things with our minds, but not our bodies. Your body was designed to constantly
move, to run, to pick things up, to go miles and miles every day. Your body can handle
it if you commit to it. Sure, it might feel hard at rst. But life is about working hard to
get what you want. There are no shortcuts in life. If you have a goal of losing weight,
getting stronger, getting faster, the only way youre going to achieve that is through
hard work. If it were easy, everybody would look like a Greek god. But I promise, once
you get into it, your perspective will change. Youll nd an odd sense of satisfaction
in pushing your bodys limits, in training to be your best and youll nd beauty in the
struggle. And you will improve.
So heres the challenge. I want you to think about your excuse. Now nd a reason to
negate that excuse. Im sure, if you use your imagination, youll nd countless reasons
why you need to get your butt into the gym immediately. Now get moving.

I prepared to be president
Clinton wows in debate,
while Trump sniffles

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

Yes, Hillary is prepared. Anyone who

wants our next president to be experienced, intelligent, thoughtful and clearthinking knew there was only one person
on the debate stage Monday night tting
that description: Hillary Rodham Clinton.
For people who want the world to respect
us there was only one person on the debate stage Monday night who will accomplish that: Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The debate was clearly dierent from
any previous presidential debates I have
ever seen and I have watched many in my
lifetime. Never before was there a candidate on the stage who thought bluster
and buoonery was a winning combi-

nation. It does seem the candidate who

excelled at that, Donald Trump, met the
qualications some of his supporters
require for the next president. He didnt
throw up and managed to stay awake
for the full 90 minutes. Many of his supporters appear to like a man who thinks
its OK to insult and denigrate women;
who wants to bring back stop and frisk,
a tactic declared unconstitutional and
unfair to people of color; who thinks not
paying people he hires what he agreed
to pay them and instead stis them is
simply good business; who doesnt have
the slightest knowledge of world aairs
and is clearly proud of not preparing
for the debate.
Sometimes it seems Trump surrogates
on TV are living in an alternate universe.
In their world supporting the man some
have accurately called a moron is ne.
Supporting a man who snis his way
through a debate (which sparked Howard
Dean to speculate Trump was on cocaine)
and who doesnt answer 90 percent of
the questions he was asked is ne. Where
supporting a man who blatantly repeats
the same lies over and over as if he repeats them often enough it becomes the
truth is ne.
In my heart I believe people supporting Trump dont represent the majority.
E DIT OR IA L C A R T OON

The majority in our country will not vote

for the man who is proudly a racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, bully. They
know he isnt the right person to lead our
nation and the world.
In my reality the majority of people in
our country still believe a person with
a bright vision for our future; who has
enunciated plans to move forward that
vision; who believes the struggle for
equality is not over but must continue
to be fought; who believes we must ght
climate change because it is real; will
continue to build coalitions around the
world to ght and destroy ISIS and believes we must do everything we can to
rid the world of nuclear weapons is the
right person to lead our great nation and
the world.
Of course I am biased. I love Hillary
Clinton. But it seems according to many
of the people who are supporting the
blowhard I am considered part of the
elite. Their denition of the elite must
be those who respect people with intelligence, who care about science and facts
and who believe we are inextricably tied
to the rest of the world and can no longer
build a wall around our nation and pretend that will solve all of our problems. It
includes those of us who respect the diversity in our nation and believe it is what
makes us better.
There will of course be two more debates and the bar for Trump will keep
being lowered by the media. Now to do
well they will tell us he simply needs to do
better than he did in the rst debate. He
will have to stand up straight and manage
to get through 90 minutes without sighing and sniing and drinking water every
two minutes.
Hillary, on the other hand, will have to
continue to display what they call likeability, an incredible wealth of knowledge
and the ability to recall facts and gures
about a host of government policies and
programs. She will have to do more than
present us a set of real policies to deal
with the scourge of drug addiction in the
nation, rebuilding our infrastructure, and
changing tax policy to encourage small
businesses that create most of our jobs.
Hillary, like all women, continues to be
held to a higher standard. As was said
about Fred Astaires dance partner Ginger
Rogers, She had to do everything he did
but had to do it backwards and in heels.

Suffering from Election Stress Disorder

If a campaign lasts more
than four months,
call your doctor

KATE CLINTON is a longtime humorist and

regular Blade contributor.

A friend of mine sends me things to

read ve to 10 times a day. She is furious
that she has to resort to email because I
dont read her on her Facebook page.
I have an old-school, some would say
Clintonian notion of privacy. I, too, have
been slow to warm to transparency. Could
be an old closet injury. It is still dicult for
me to make myself read whats in parentheses. I have the nagging feeling that its
none of my business. I dont thumbs-up

Facebook because I like learning things

from people when I meet them. If I already
know every detail of their special Tuscan
vacation, whats to talk about?
The subject line of my friends e-missives
is usually: READ THIS OR ELSE. She hates my
away message: I will be out of my mind until November 9, and not reading my emails
in a careless but legal way. She disputes
my claim of accidentally deleting email.
And if my long lost cousin, eighth-removed,
stranded in Nepal and needing emergency
funds for a return ticket is reading this column, please get back in touch. My bad. I
dont have the money, but youre welcome
to put the penis extender on eBay.
I know she sends me emails because
shes anxious about the election. Calling me out on my denial and avoidance
is a better way of coping than damaging
anothers property or causing another
bodily harm. And I have to admit that her
recent all-caps read-this by a Dr. Stephen
Stosny was interesting. Stosny, Ph.D., author of Soar Above: How to Use the Most
Profound Part of Your Brain Under Any
Kind of Stress, recently identied and

named the malady: Election Stress Disorder. The guy is a genius.

Other clinicians have also seen the electile dysfunction in their patients. They report that the endless election cycle, 24/7
adrenalized media stories, and anti-social
media all cause a hyper-ventilized anxiety
with symptoms of restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, fatigue, concentration
and sleep diculties.
If an election lasts more than four
months, call your doctor. Some clinicians
have reported that two-thirds to threequarters of their patients talk about the
election in their sessions. Donald Trump,
the emperor of all maladies is himself a
trigger warning. An ABC/Washington Post
poll found that President Trump made
69 percent of voters anxious. President
Clinton caused 50 percent of voters to
break out in a cold sweat, though that
could just be peri-menopausal.
Stosny says that this presidential election appeals more to the emotional, allor-nothing, toddler brain. People cope
with their anxiety with typical toddler
tools: blame, denial, and avoidance. They

will tend to look for oversimplied solutions at work, drink more, drive more
aggressively and suer the physiological
and mental eects of general stress.
His remedy is that people try to shift to
the adult brain. That brain has the ability to
weigh evidence, see nuance, plan for the
future and replace blame, denial and avoidance with an appreciation of complexity.
Really? Shift to the adult brain? Thats
all hes got?
And what are we supposed to take as
the national adrenal systems short out in
the lead-up to the presidential debates? As
the frenzied Wrestlemania graphics blaze,
a smoky ringmaster voice barks the promise of the biggest viewing audience for a
presidential debate. Ever. Bigger than the
biggest Super Bowl. In this corner, Hillary
D for Deplorable Clinton. And in this corner Donald the Master Baiter Trump. Live.
And on stage. For the rst time. Ever.
To soar above this mass psychosis and
its delusional ideation, there is no profound
part of my brain that will help with the stress.
The thing my adult brain needs is a Klonipin
and it better be the size of a hubcap.

O U R B USI NES S MATTERS

Will D.C. repair licensing and open door to all voices?

Council weighs reform
of legal standing in bar,
restaurant license process

MARK LEE is a long-time entrepreneur

and community business advocate. Follow
on Twitter: @MarkLeeDC. Reach him at
OurBusinessMatters@gmail.com.

It all boils down to basic fairness, to repairing an out-of-balance D.C. business licensing
system residents across the city have long lamented and more often than not cursed.
Current regulatory protocols deny a common desire to allow all community voices an
equal opportunity to have input absent bestowing special standing and intervention
powers to self-anointed groups representing
only a few.
The D.C. Council is currently weighing reform of the liquor-licensing system for the
Districts largest hometown business segment
the bars, restaurants, and nightclubs that are
enthusiastically supported as popular amenities enlivening the city and lling govern-

ment tax coers. The outcome will determine

whether there is sucient commonsense to
x a byzantine and broken system.
Its actually a simple proposition: Will the
D.C. Council broaden the regulatory reforms
initiated a half-decade ago and designate
advisory neighborhood commissions (ANCs)
to serve in their intended role as micro-area
advisers conveying community input for consideration by city agency administrators and
licensing adjudication boards?
Under current law, ad-hoc gangs of ve-ormore-persons and community associations
sometimes formed exclusively to le regulatory protests opposing neighborhood development and business licensing continue to
wield a veto-like power over everyone else by
abusing the system and gaming the process.
Small businesses endure unnecessary delays
and incur both substantial legal costs and lost
revenues as a result of such shenanigans.
In my role as director of the local nightlife
hospitality trade association, I hear the neverending complaints from both business operators and community supporters.
Residents usurped of meaningful input are
left pondering why they are essentially frozen
out and their opinions cast to the sidelines,
a result of the procedural hijacking through
outside-lane licensing protests led by these
small groups.
Those who have witnessed the lengthy

licensing battles endured over the years by

well-regarded neighborhood spots such as
JR.s Bar, Hanks Oyster Bar restaurant, Compass Rose Bar & Kitchen and The Left Door
cocktail bar, and legions of other dining and
drinking venues citywide, know exactly whats
at stake.
D.C. Council member Anita Bonds, who
chairs the committee overseeing ANCs, spent
nearly a year meeting with commissioners
throughout the District and has introduced
legislation to remedy this situation.
Bonds hopes to arm the legitimate and
benecial advisory-input role ANCs can contribute. Included in the lengthy bill, which
primarily addresses ANC organizational support and assistance while also establishing
commissions as the agency-required go-to
groups for channeling community input, are
two provisions that remedy lingering licensing
problems that plague local hospitality entrepreneurs.
These components would eliminate the
special legal standing of citizens groups and
gangs-of-ve allowing them to le independent license protests. The bill would also
require that conducting ANC business, negotiating with businesses, and voting in committees on licensing agreements be reserved for
elected commissioners only and not unelected volunteers.
The extramural groups are predictably up-

set about losing their special status and are

pressuring Council members to preserve their
outsized powers to separately intervene.
These special-interest entities portray the
proposed reforms as taking something away
from them, excluding them, tossing them to
the curb. Instead, theyre only being asked to
participate in an open and transparent discernment process on equal footing with other
stakeholders.
Elected ANC representatives, accountable
to their neighbors, would determine the ANCs
advisory recommendations to city licensing
and regulatory agencies.
In this way, the doors would be ung open
with everyone allowed equitable engagement
in community discussion and collective discernment, without special powers and privileges for some.
The Council is on the right track. It should
permit the nonpartisan elected commissioners to serve in their unique capacity for providing the open and accessible forum at which
all stakeholders can voice their opinions and
express their concerns. ANCs are the appropriate arbiters to weigh those community considerations in determining an advisory recommendation to city ocials on licensing matters
for community hospitality establishments and
other enterprise.
The proposed reforms provide a long-overdue dose of fresh air and should be adopted.

Colombian peace agreement will benet LGBTI community

Armed conict began more
than ve decades ago
By WILSON CASTAEDA CASTRO
The formal signing of the peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC in the city of Cartagena on Sept. 26 put an end to the armed
conict and ushered in a new generation
of peace that will be decided by the people on Oct. 2. The said plebiscite for peace
is expected to receive massive support
from LGBTI people.
The armed Colombian conict has affected the civil population over more than
ve decades. It has caused more than 8
million victims and countless human
rights violations throughout the country.
Given this context, Caribe Armativo has
documented two very specic things that
have occurred toward LGBTI people. It
was the armed conict that initiated the
recognition of their rights on the part of
the State, especially through rulings of the
Constitutional Court, but there has also
been a situation where violence against

This historic opportunity will allow civil society to

people in the country.
people of diverse sexual orientations and
gender identities has been exacerbated.
Therefore, the peace agreement that
has been reached, after four years of conversations between the government and
the FARC-EP, one of the continents oldest
guerrilla groups, is an achievement for civil
society because it opens the possibility of
putting an end to the violence that has
encompassed every part of the country
and to begin to build a Colombia free of
violence. In this sense, LGBT people are an
important component as members of civil
society that have been a part of the peace
movements, like it was with Planeta Paz at
the end of the 90s. Besides dierent contributions from social, cultural and political spheres in the country, through which
they have contributed in these places, they
can build a strong civil society that is free
of violence. All of this is recognized in the

deal, where the gendered focus transverses all the points and agreements that
have been achieved, recognizing the grave
consequences the conict has had against
LGBTI people and the need to achieve a
society free of discrimination and with
equal rights for everyone.
This gendered approach has been
taken into account with the participation
of civil society during the negotiations to
bring about the agreement where distinct
organizations, leaders, Caribe Armativo
among them, in February 2015 shared
some of the experiences that LGBT people had within the context of the conict,
the contributions they have historically
made for peace and the reections that
they have had in a Colombian society
that has not accepted diversity for many
years. But in order to achieve a peace
that reaches the whole country and all

of its people, you need to remove those

stereotypes and prejudices that have allowed marginalization, discrimination
and violence against people because of
their sexual orientation or gender identity
for which armed groups are responsible
through their violent actions.
Thus, we at Caribe Armativo think that
the peace agreement will allow for the
construction of a more inclusive Colombia, where not only violence from the internal armed conict will cease, but state
institutional and political guidelines for the
recognition of the rights of LGBTI people,
promoting spaces of participation where a
peace can be constructed from the territories that recognize the rights of all people
who are aorded rights will be established. This historic opportunity will also
allow civil society to learn the importance
and contributions of LGBTI people in the
country, removing all of those conceptions
that have seen diversity as an obstacle and
at the same time it will begin to guarantee a Colombia where people can exercise
their full citizenship without any limitation.
WILSON CASTAEDA CASTRO is director of Caribe
Armativo, a Colombian LGBT advocacy group.

VIEWPOINT

Acuerdo de paz colombiano

incluye a la poblacin LGBTI
Conicto armado comenz

necesita desmontar aquellos imaginarios

Beekman or bust
Gay entrepreneurs reinvent themselves at rural N.Y. farm
By MARIAH COOPER
mcooper@washblade.com

When Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent

Ridge took time from their bustling New
York City life to go apple picking, they had
no idea they were embarking on a trip that
would be the start of their own business,
reality TV fame and change their lives.
In a set-up that sounds like something
out of a sitcom, Kilmer-Purcell and Ridge
ended up getting lost on their apple
picking adventure and wound up in
Sharon Springs, N.Y., a rural town teeming
with quirk and charm. They found the
American Hotel, owned by local gay
couple Doug Plummer and Garth Roberts,
and decided to spend the night. The next
day on the way home, the pair stumbled
across Beekman Farm, a local farm that
happened to be for sale.
Kilmer-Purcell and Ridge fell in love with
the property, cashed in everything they
had, took out a mortgage and became the
proud owners. They had no idea the farm
would end up being their saving grace.
The recession of 2008 brought
misfortune to many, including KilmerPurcell who lost his job in advertising
and Ridge who lost his position as vice
president of healthy living at Martha
Stewart Omnimedia. Without big city

earnings to keep them aoat, the couple

knew they had to gure out a way to prot
off their farm. The farms neighbor John
Hale, affectionally nicknamed by the town
Farmer John and also a gay man, was also
down on his luck and lost his farm. He left a
letter in Kilmer-Purcell and Ridges mailbox

asking if he could store his goats at their

farm. The couple couldnt say no.
Farmer John and his 80 goats moved
into Beekman Farm and the couple realized
they had been given an opportunity to
prot.
We actually started Googling What

can we do with goat milk? and the rst

thing that came up was goat milk soap,
Kilmer-Purcell says. It just so happened
one of our neighbors was a soap maker
and she taught us how to make the soap
with goat milk. Then she introduced us to
another neighbor who was a weaver and
another neighbor who was a blacksmith.
We realized there was all these great
craftspeople that were making amazing
products, but didnt know how to market
them. Thats when we fell back on our skills
in advertising and with Martha Stewart.
From there, the brand Beekman 1802
was born. The company expanded from
goat milk and now sells everything from
artisanal cheeses, skin care, clothing,
kitchenware, bedding, rugs, cookbooks
and much more.
Their brands tagline is Cultivate a
better life and its something that goes
beyond marketing for the two.
We chose that because there are so
many lifestyle brands out there from
Kardashian, even Martha Stewart, that
want you to think there are all these magic
ways your life will become better if you

just buy their products. We believe that

having a better life is a lot of hard work.
Its a lot of helping your neighbors and
those things dont just happen. So were
not just a brand of things you buy we have
a philosophy of helping your neighbor,
Kilmer-Purcell says.
After launching a line of pasta sauces
made from small farm ingredients, Target
reached out to the entrepreneurial couple
for a collaboration for a food line. Now
Beekman 1802 Farmhouse, the brands
home line, launched on Sept. 14 and is
available for purchase on target.com.
The collection is Americana rustic with a
modern twist and includes items such as a
dinnerware collection, bedding collection,
lightening collection, rugs, a sofa and much
more. Prices range from $14.99 to $599.99.
The signicance of having their items
sold by a big-name retailer like Target isnt
lost on the couple.
A company like Target never would
have launched a food or home brand with
a company that is so visibly fronted by a
long-term gay couple, Ridge says. I think
it just shows how far weve come.Target is
a middle-America-based retailer and the
fact that its a non-issue for them really
shows where we are truly at in America.
Kilmer-Purcell and Ridges journey
from city boys to farmers can be seen on
their now-defunct, three-season reality
television show The Fabulous Beekman
Boys, which aired on Planet Green and
the Cooking Channel.
Although the reality show experience
was new for the town, Kilmer-Purcell and
Ridge say people were very welcoming to
the show and to the couple.
We always say Doug and Garth at the
American Hotel were the pioneers. They
were the rst gay couple to move into
the area in the late 90s and they were
so beloved that Doug is now the mayor
now, Kilmer-Purcell says. People here
were really open to the idea of outsiders
because they had brought in business and
tourism. So we walked into a really friendly
atmosphere. We always say homophobia
is a luxury of the middle class because rich
people generally have more exposure to
the world and poor people have bigger
things to worry about.
The town even became part of one of
the biggest days in the couples lives.
They always think what were doing is
weird, but I think theyve learned to trust us
because we genuinely bring a lot of good
energy and outside people into the area,

Products from the Beekman 1802 Farmhouse line at Target.

Ridge says. When we got married in 2013,

we invited everybody in Sharon Springs
to the wedding. They all came including
priests and pastors from congregations
that didnt recognize gay marriage.
The couple whove been together 16
years says although it was weird having
cameras around at rst, they became used
to the environment and formed a special
relationship with the crew. Kilmer-Purcell
and Ridge even attended the directors
wedding.
Their newfound reality TV fame also
landed them on the 21st season of The
Amazing Race, in which they came in rst.
While they have earned acclaim for their
creative business, the couple thinks there
is more behind the stereotype that gay
people have a great eye for design that
runs deep.
Our philosophy is that growing up
LGBT kids have to be really creative,
Kilmer-Purcell says. I dont know if its true
anymore but when we were growing up
we had to be really creative to nd ways to
hide your true identity. You start your life
being incredibly creative. It makes a lot of
sense that LGBT people go into creative
elds. Most of the heteronormative world,
they can just go with the ow their entire
lives. Whereas LGBT people have to start
overcoming obstacles as soon as they are
aware of their differences.

The couple have utilized their creativity

to new heights by expanding their
business in ways beyond a food and home
line into giving experiences to others.
Website visitors can take a live look
at the Live Goat Cam, a live stream feed
on beekman1802.com to experience
the beauty of their goats for free from
anywhere in the world.
The couple has also curated Trips of a
Lifetime in which small groups of people
ranging from 15 to 25 can purchase
trips with the couple to international
locations. The trips are designed with a

commitment to agriculture, philanthropy

and understanding different cultures in
mind. Last year, they went to Cuba and
next year they are planning a trip to India.
With all Kilmer-Purcell and Ridge have
accomplished, there is still one aspect of
their brand that they may never live down.
When we moved in, because we
owned the Beekman Farm, everyone
started calling us the Beekman Boys. And
everybody still calls us the boys and I
have this dreaded feeling that were going
to be 80 years old and theyll still be calling
us the boys, Ridge says.

Fall ideas for home and hearth

Use all your senses to infuse space with autumnal charm

Take an unused area of your home like an attic, basement or spare room and make it a bright,
inviting space that pops with accents. It could be a great getaway spot during the inevitable winter
blahs that are coming soon.

(StatePoint) With autumn comes crisp

falling leaves, fresh brisk air and pumpkin
spice aromas. Its time to prepare your
home to spend more time indoors,
decorating it with warm, cozy accents to
set the tone for the season.
Make your home fall-ready with the
following cozy ideas.

Freshen up with
soothing aromas

A little me time is good for the soul

and sometimes you need to pamper
yourself after a long day. Whether the
scent is apple cinnamon, pumpkin pie
or maple leaf, lighting a candle with your
favorite fall fragrance creates a warm and
welcoming atmosphere, enhancing your
sense of calm.

Create a living
room sanctuary

Transform your living room into an at-

home getaway by displaying seasonal

throw pillows and blankets, and adorning
the space with elements from nature,
like a vase lled with leaf stems and crab
apple branches. Crank up the cozy factor
with homemade hot cider and a crackling
replace.

Refresh interiors with paint

Give rooms a refreshing update, add
color and create contrast in a space with
accent walls. Deep colors like navy blue
help create a relaxing retreat. Or take a
cue from the changing leaves and opt for
warm colors, like mustard yellow or burnt
orange. To ensure a top-notch paint job,
use a premium brand painters tape that
will deliver sharp paint lines, like FrogTape.
Its the only painters tape that features
patented PaintBlock Technology, which
reacts with the water in latex paint and
instantly gels to form a micro-barrier that
seals the edges of the tape to help prevent
paint bleed.

Innovate with
multi-functional appeal
Since youll be spending more time
inside, transform an empty space like a
basement or attic into a useful area for
the entire family. With a little imagination
and a few tools, you can create a vibrant
and playful craft room, as did FrogTape
Paintover Challenge winner KariAnne
Wood from the blog Thistlewood Farms.
Wood transformed an unused upstairs
space in her home into a room for her
children to craft, study and hang out with
friends. An exciting, multi-functional space
is a great way to avoid cabin fever in the
months ahead.

Give guests a warm greeting

Celebrity designer Taniya Nayak
correctly predicted home design elements
that incorporate typographic elements
would be a key design trend in 2016. This
trend is all about setting the tone for a space

with inspirational quotes, personalization

and warm greetings. Welcome guests
by playing up the autumnal theme with
phrases like, Hello Fall or Give Thanks
on decorative wooden planks or burlaptextured fabric. Consider using various
font types and sizes to achieve a different
feel for each block of text.

Deck out curb appeal

Nothing sets a good impression like an
attractive entry way and front door. Greet
guests with a festive hello by decking out
the porch with pumpkins and planting
seasonal oral arrangements along the
pathway, or creating a fall-inspired wreath
to hang on the door. You can even collect a
handful of colorful leaves outside to string
together and post along your porch fence
for extra curb appeal.
For more seasonal inspiration, visit
frogtape.com. Get started on your projects
now, so you can kick-back, relax and fully
enjoy all the season has to offer.

GAY SEATTLE-BASED STRING PLAYER GRABBING ATTENTION WITH PERRY, BEIBER VIDEOS
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com

Shirtless Violinist MATTHEW OLSON in a still taken from his popular YouTube videos.

Matthew Olson has drifted away from

playing the violin a few times in his life
and returned but when it happened most
recently over the past year, he found
something was dierent.
Olson, who has lived in the Seattle area
since 2001 and grew up in various parts
of the Midwest (mostly in Kansas City,
Mo.), has dubbed himself the Shirtless
Violinist launching his new guise with a
trio of violin covers of current pop songs
such as Katy Perrys Rise (16,600 views
since Aug. 29) Justin Biebers Cold Water
(20,000 views since Sept. 8) and Lady
Gagas Perfect Illusion (7,900 YouTube
views since Sept. 15). Using the hashtag
#ShirtOMyBack, Olson encourages
viewers to donate to charities in their
areas, especially those that help with
mental illness and addiction issues.

They resonate most with him because

his mother battles both. Olson was her
caregiver for several years and recalls
some very dark periods of my life and
very sad periods where he considered
giving up the violin. Music, he says, has
been a salvation. He hopes it will be for
others now with his videos.
Ive taken some time o from the
violin at dierent times, tried pursuing
some things in other directions, he says.
Music really kept me sane as a child
growing up and it got me through a lot of
trauma.
Olson began music lessons at age
3 and has two siblings who are also
professionally trained violinists. They
formerly performed around the world as
the trio Two Hits and a Miss. Olson has
performed as a soloist, chamber musician

and in orchestras both in the U.S. and

abroad. He was formerly concertmaster
for the Kansas City Ballet Orchestra. He
had oers with full scholarships to various
conservatories but passed because of
his mothers needs. He still managed to
study with a series of teachers he says
were excellent and highly respected in
the world of violin pedagogy.
The idea for the Shirtless Violinist
project developed with his boyfriend of
ve months, Paul Castle. Though only
together a short time, Olson says they
have mutual passions for physical tness
and creative endeavors. Castle, a painter,
has a genetic, degenerative retinal
condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa
he has about a 15 percent eld of
central vision, which says is just enough
to pursue my passion in the visual arts

eld. He shoots the Shirtless Violinist

videos while Olson plays and together
they hope to use shirtlessness as a way
to draw attention to and raise awareness
for homelessness, addiction and mental
illness.
Olson gleans most of his income
teaching but also does studio work in
Seattle on lm soundtracks, video game
soundtracks and occasionally providing
string work for touring acts that come to
town such as Josh Groban or Rod Stewart.
Id seen the Piano Guys on YouTube
and really loved how they combined
beautiful music with stunning visuals,
Olson, who declines to give his age, says.
Id always done all classical, but I was
ready to branch o and do something

KYLE ROHEN
By JOEY DiGULIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
The third annual Northern Virginia Pride Festival (NOVA Pride) is this
weekend Saturday, Oct. 1 from noon-8 p.m. at the Bull Run Special Events
Center in Centreville, Va. (about 25 miles west of Washington on I-66).
Kyle Rohen, who has been involved with the entity for about four-and-ahalf years was formerly its chief operations ocer and vice president but now
works as family, events, life and outreach director.
Im incredibly excited about it, the 31-year-old Breaux Bridge, La., native
says, citing job and housing discrimination, LGBT senior issues, HIV and
medication issues, transgender rights and more as pressing concerns. Pride is
still vital because marriage was not the nal frontier. Pride is often dismissed
as just a bunch of naked people running around wearing rainbows. Sure,
thats a big part of it, but its also about showing our strength as a community
while furthering the goals of tolerance, acceptance and equality for all.
Between 5,000-10,000 are expected Saturday for games, food, a photo booth,
karaoke, prizes, games for all ages, and more in a pet-friendly environment.
Free transportation is available to and from the Vienna Metro station and
theres plenty of free parking at the event site. Full details at novapride.org.
Rohen works by day in health and safety. He and husband Seth Koberg live
in Herndon, Va. He enjoys reading, movies and video games in his free time.

Whos your LGBT hero?

Marsha P. Johnson because she was erce
and tremendously underappreciated
by the LGBT community for her role in
Stonewall. Contemporary LGBT hero
would be Peter Staley for his tireless eorts
in HIV/AIDS activism through the worst of
the epidemic.

Whats Washingtons best nightspot,

past or present?
I dont go out very often, though I do enjoy
Green Lantern. Cute bartenders, good
conversation, music is at a great volume so
to not require yelling at the person next to
you, great drink prices.

Describe your dream wedding.

I got the wedding I wanted, actually
simple, courthouse, with a small reception
for close friends and family. We were very
pleased with how it turned out.

What non-LGBT issue are you most

passionate about?
Judicial reform, specically focusing on
the disparity in sentencing based on race
of victim or perpetrator and push for the
repeal of the death penalty.

What historical outcome would you

change?
I wouldnt change a single historical event.
The chain reaction resulting from changing
an event could end up being signicantly
worse than the original event.

Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
The announcement of Freddie Mercurys
HIV diagnosis followed by his passing the
next day.

On what do you insist?

Honesty and dierentiating between
opinions and facts! I get so irked when I
hear someone say something like, Well
its just my opinion that X politician has
personally stolen billions or whatever
thats a declarative, not an opinion.
An opinion is, I like her policies better,
not something that can be substantively
shown as false.

What was your last Facebook post or

I shared the commercial for the NOVA
Pride Festival!

If your life were a book, what would the

title be?
Youll Never Believe This Nonsense, But
Buy It Anyway

If science discovered a way to change

sexual orientation, what would you do?
Rail against it. Thats a terrible idea.

What do you believe in beyond the

physical world?
Im not sure, honestly. My beliefs fall
somewhere in the agnostic eld.

Whats your advice for LGBT movement

leaders?
Take a breath and keep your head up.
Things will always get worse before they
get better and the groundwork youre
laying right now is building upon the
wonderful work weve inherited from the
Daughters of Bilitis and the Mattachine
Society. Do it for them. Do it for future
generations. Recognize theres a great
chance some of what were ghting for
wont be realized in our lifetimes but that
were constantly striving to make the world
better for the future.

What would you walk across hot coals

for?
Absolutely nothing. I like my feet intact!

What LGBT stereotype annoys you

most?
That were all supposed to be thin and
neat. Sometimes I dont want to wash
the dishes or immediately wash clothes
so theyll sit for a day. Im way too busy
sometimes and like my down time.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

Its kind of a clich, but The Normal
Heart. I thought it was a vitally important
portrayal of the AIDS epidemic for
those who for whatever reason avoid
documentaries like We Were Here or
How To Survive a Plague.

Whats the most overrated social

custom?
Monogamy. I take the Dan Savage view
of it that the odds of a marriage having
indelities is innitely high, so its better to
be prepared and/or make allowances for
such things well in advance to avoid those
relationship-ending scenarios.

What trophy or prize do you most

covet?
I have a guidebook written in English
about Japan that was published in 1945
for the 1946 touristy season, which came
out before the Hiroshima and Nagasaki
bombings. Its surreal to read about the
festivals that would have occurred and the
excitement with which theyre written about.

What do you wish youd known at 18?

Nothing other than what I knew already.
Ive been pleased with the trajectory of my
life thus far, even the terrible things. Its all
led to a unique experience that has shaped
my worldview, and I wouldnt change that.

Why Washington?
Husband!

Come From Away,

Urinetown are
memorable, well staged

Some things we all have in

common.
Theres nobody like me to protect the
things we all value. Like a good neighbor,
State Farm is there. CALL ME TODAY.

By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Small towns have long served as
reliable settings for American musicals.
Keeping in that tradition, Irene Sanko
and David Heins Come From Away
takes place in Gander, a remote burg in
northeastern Newfoundland.
Based on a true story, the Broadwaybound show currently enjoying an
uplifting run at Fords Theatre, tells how
little Gander with its nearby big airport
cared for nearly 7,000 passengers for
ve days following 9-11 when scores of
planes were rerouted to the Canadian
province. Totally unprepared for hosting
thousands, the towns small but plucky
population willingly opened its homes,
schools and businesses to feed, clothe
and shelter the stranded travelers.
Of course, a situation in which wary
globetrotters
mix
intimately
with
trusting folks is ripe for humorous
misunderstandings, heartfelt moments,
the forging of unlikely friendships and even
romance. Come From Away delivers on
all that as well as giving layered, believable
characters. Propelled by a driving rock
musical score, events unfold swiftly and
unpredictably; there are solemn moments
but the musicals lighthearted moments
prove its most poignant.
The solid cast is led by charismatic out
actor Jenn Colella who plays Beverley
Bass, American Airlines trailblazing rst
woman pilot who melodically relays her
story with Me and the Sky. Colella also
hilariously plays a Gander librarian who
continuously misconstrues meetings with
various men as near erotic encounters.
The Kevins (Chad Kimball and
Caesar Samayoa) are a gay couple who
share the same name. They adapt to
Gander culture with varying degrees of
enthusiasm. Samayoa also plays Ali, an
Egyptian Muslin passenger who quickly
becomes the object of suspicion once
the background of the perpetrators
of the 9-11 attacks is revealed. Sharon
Wheatley and Lee MacDougall are the
unlikely couple whose future is sealed at
a raucous Gander V.F.W. hoedown. Astrid
Van Wieren and Joel Hatch revel in their
roles as salt-of-the earth townies, and
D.C. triple threat Alyssa Wilmoth Keegan
memorably plays the towns animal rights
activist who singlehandedly saves various
pets and a pair of zoo-bound chimps
stuck in cargo.

The strong cast of Come From Away, a new Broadway-bound musical.

mismatched planks conveys both

the solidity and remoteness of the rural

Christopher Ashleys staging is pretty
much seamless. Its a smooth production.

New York when he was directing out

Before Fords, Come From Away
played in San Diego and Seattle, and now

time and place where a decades-long
drought has caused private bathrooms to
be outlawed. The towns populace must
pay to pee in public amenities, or else
be banished to Urinetown. The lucrative
toilet monopoly is owned by evil Cladwell
B.Cladwell (played by Nicklas Ali with
a voice eerily reminiscent of MGM actor
Frank Morgan, best known as the Wizard
in The Wizard of Oz).
When folks can no longer meet
increasingly
exorbitant
bathroom
fees, heroic Bobby Strong (Vaugh Ryan
Midder), an employee at the nastiest loo
in town, courageously stages a rebellion.
Hes joined by the big boss dutiful
daughter turned hardcore revolutionary
Hope Cladwell (Katie Keyser). Mr. Cladwell
ghts to maintain power but the will of
the people and their urgent need to pee
is unstoppable.
Narrators Ocer Lockstock and
precocious waif Little Sally (cast standouts

Matt Dewberry and Jenna Berk) explain

the action and what makes a successful
musical. Ably staged by Constellations
artistic
director
Allison
Arkell
Stockman with energetic and inventive
choreography by Ilona Kessell, this darkly
funny meta musical successfully pokes
fun of its own genre, parodying shows
like Les Mis, West Side Story, Chicago
and others.
A.J. Gubans set is an appropriately
depressing mix of corrugated metal and
piping, and Robert Croghans costumes
are mostly modern Oakie though the
bigwigs wear brightly colored suits and
Hope is unmissable in her bright red skirt
and bunny-eared bow.
As water becomes an increasingly
valuable commodity in the world and
class divisions widen, the 2001 musical
gives cause for pause. At one point (in
the Constellation production), a white
actor states, Police protect the peace,
and an African-American actor asks, Do
they? But mostly, Urinetown remains a
wickedly funny romp.

The Village Market at the Inn at Little Washington is a good way to sample the famed cuisine there
without spending a fortune.

more pleasant than spending a day in the
country?
When you get to the Village Market,
head rst to the Inns own table, because
the biscuits piled with cured pork made
by Tom Calhoun of nearby Culpeper,
whom OConnell has referred to as a
ham artist, will go quickly, along with
freshly baked croissants and pastries,
sometimes selling out before noon.
Once youve had a nosh and grabbed a
hot- or cold-brewed coee from Before

the oerings and begin to load up on

Pro tip: stash a cooler in the trunk so you

Sometimes you just want to get away

and as the fall colors begin to adorn the
trees, nothing could be more welcome
than a day trip to Washington, Va., home
of the famed Inn at Little Washington.
Just 67 miles from its larger namesake
in
Rappahannock
County,
Little
Washington is little more than a country
crossroads that has managed to become
a mecca for ne dining since chef Patrick
OConnell settled there in 1978. Since
then, OConnells inn and restaurant
have racked up awards from the James
Beard Foundation, Zagat, Wine Spectator,
Mobile Travel Guide and AAA, with rooms
starting around $800 a night and dinner
ringing in at about $200 per person (a
price that used to seem other-worldly
but is now becoming de rigueur in D.C.
among even the youngest chefs).
But if these ights of fancy are a bit
out of reach, consider instead simply
spending a sunny Sunday at the Inns
Village Market, where you can taste
treats from OConnells kitchen while
shopping for local goods. Meandering
among the tents and tables set up in the
shady Parsonage Garden, just across
the street from the Inn, youll nd tiny
fresh quail eggs, goat milk ice cream
and both sweet and savory gluten-free
baked goods. It runs Sundays from 10
a.m.-2 p.m. through Oct. 30. Details at
theinnatlittlewashington.com/market.
For OConnell, the market provides
an opportunity to showcase the local
farmers and vendors who supply the Inn
with much of the food that ends up in
its dining room, but, perhaps even more
importantly, to introduce city folks to his

his signature creations include Whyskey

Bacon, pork belly cured with Himalayan
salt and local Catoctin Creek rye whiskey;
Smoked Yucatan Gaucho Brats, made
with beef, pork, spices, herbs, jalapeos,
queso and tequila; and authentic Hessen
Style Potato Sausages.
Amp up your cocktails with botanical
syrups from Wild Roots Apothecary.
Actually brewed in D.C.s Union Kitchen,
these bottled syrups feature creative
blends of owers, herbs and fruit that
work in both cocktails and mocktails. The
Nettle Orange syrup has bright notes of
fennel and citrus, pairing well with gin
or rye, while the Rosehip Hibiscus syrup,
with hints of star anise and coriander,
mixes perfectly into a margarita. Pair
the Elderberry Lavender a personal
favorite with chilled green tea, vodka
and a fresh lemon garnish.
Great Greens oers a wide array of
unexpected avors with its microgreens
and lettuces, from purslane and red sorrel
to mini kale and salt wort. Some folks
are hesitant to purchase fresh greens,
microgreens especially, because of
concern that they will deteriorate quickly,
but they will generally stay fresh for up
to seven days if stored properly in the
crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Sample
the dierent varieties, which change
frequently the micro nasturtium was
a recent favorite: its snappy horseradish
bite is perfect for topping deli sandwiches.
While youre wandering the market,
keep an eye out for the tall, rangy gure
of Chef OConnell (whos openly gay), who
loves to extoll the virtues of his adopted
home and point out his favorite treats.
And be prepared to unplug while youre
there cell phone service is sketchy at
best, so take a break from social media to
live, and eat, in the moment.

The truth was bent a little bit.

OK, so it was actually mangled. Warped
beyond anything that might remotely be
real. Wrapped up in a colossal liar-liarpants-on-re conagration. The truth
was nowhere near the lie you told to save
face, to save feelings, or as in the new
novel The Wonder by Emma Donoghue,
to save a life.
Lib Wright was so angry she could
hardly breathe.
Yes, she was told that she would be
handsomely paid and put up which
was true but she was also told that
her skills as a nurse were essential, which
was a lie. All those years of working in a
eld hospital in the Crimean War, all the
time spent learning from the great Miss
Nightingale, all the hours spent on patient
care, and these Irish villagers were telling
her that her assignment was to be little
more than jailer.
Anna ODonnell, they said, was 11
years old and hadnt had a bite of food
for four months. She consumed water by
the spoonful, which was to say sparingly,
and skeptics had come round. To prove
that the childs feat was a miracle of God,
a committee had hired Lib and an elderly
nun to watch the girls every movement
for two weeks.
Anna didnt need nursing care. She
absolutely didnt need Lib.

But nevermind. Miss N had taught Lib

to nish a task and, as Lib saw it, her task
was not merely to report her observations
in respect to Anna, but to reveal the little
shammer for what she was. Surely, no
child can live without sustenance, and Lib
aimed to get to the bottom of it all.
But it wouldnt be easy. Anna was a
sweet, gentle child with a devotion to
God and an eagerness to please those in
her household, Lib, and the nun, Sister
Michael. Many times during her eighthour shift, Lib heard the childs prayers
and saw her playing with her holy cards,
but she never saw her eat a bite.
A miracle? No, it was obvious that Anna
was in distress: her body was slowly
shutting down for lack of food, as Libs job
suddenly expanded.
Coming to a theater near you? Dont be
surprised.
The Wonder practically begs to
become a movie, and for good reason:
as shes done in many of her past novels,
author Emma Donoghue takes a snip
of something true (yes, there were real
Fasting Girls throughout history) and
spins a tale around it in this case, a
possible murder, set in Victorian Ireland.
While readers of Sherlockian whodunits
will relish that, the alternate (and perhaps
larger) appeal is in Donoghues main
character, a no-nonsense, self-assured
woman who becomes someone else
before us, as the story unspools.
Add in a hint of magic that seems, even
to some of its characters, to be terribly
out of place and youve got a novel that
grabs you good, and an ending thats
purely perfect. Youre going to love The
Wonder. Its a straight-up edge-of-yourchair read.

Addiction, mental illness part

of #ShirtOMyBack campaign

creative so I started covering these pop

songs, something Id never done before.
I feel like this is the right thing to do.
Together with a shoestring budget,
Castle and Olson lmed Rise the third
week of August and had it posted by the
end of the month. And for those who
havent seen the videos, no, this isnt
just two guys lming with their iPhones
in the backyard. Castle and Olson travel
extensively for beautiful vistas and have
lmed in Napa Valley, San Francisco and
Mount Shasta in California; Crater Lake
in Oregon; and Chuckanut Mountains
and Whatcom Falls in Washington state,
among others. Olson always sans
shirt falls in lakes, plays with water
pouring over him (obviously with prop
instruments) strikes poses with planes
and trains swooping overhead and all
sorts of creative setups.
So far, theyve taken anywhere
from three days to two weeks to lm
and several days of post-production
and editing. Olson comes up with the
arrangements himself and adds rhythm
under his violin lines. Castle and Olson
are brimming with ideas for songs theyd
like to do next. Olson says songs like Sias
Bird Set Free, a gypsy-style classical
piece called Csardas by Vittorio Monti
and maybe even some pop hits from
yesteryear as likely future projects.
Castle says the projects have given him
renewed passion.
Meeting Matthew, falling in love and
discovering our mutual creative passions
reignited in me a love for making videos,
he says. When the Shirtless Violinist idea
was born, I truly felt it was the universe
calling out to me and giving me a chance
to do the thing Id always wanted to do, but
stopped believing was possible. I believe
Matthew and I were meant to nd each
other and help galvanize our shared
dreams. We truly make a great team.
And though its a new endeavor, Olson
says it works for the same reasons music
has always drawn him.
I feel like music has the ability to go
beyond words and connect directly with
the emotions, Olson says. Thats why
well sometimes listen to a song on repeat
it connects directly to our emotions
and bypasses our brain and language. Ive
always had the most sublime, beautiful
experiences through music.

FUN FACTS:
On arranging pop songs for violin: If
it has a lot of spoken lyrics, like a rap song,
it wont work. Or too many repeated notes
in a row thats hard, too. Trying to nd

ones that have enough of a melody that it

still sounds beautiful without the words,
thats the challenge.
Songs that didnt work: We tried
Closer by the Chainsmokers, which is
a great song, but just didnt really work.
Sometimes it becomes a fun challenge.
I kind of love it when Im just messing
around and cant just play it instantly.
But other times I can see that something
might work but would really take a lot of
time so it kind of goes in the B pile.
Views so far: About 200,000 counting
Facebook and YouTube.
Height: 63
Weight: I dont really weigh myself. Id
guess about 180. Caliper measurements
are much better for giving you body mass
index.
Fitness regimen: Five-six days per
week at the gym alternating upper and
lower body but always some form of
cardio, too.
Diet: We try to reduce sugar
completely, no fruit because of all the
sugars in fruit, no processed foods, high
protein and stu with good fats. We start
the day with a green smoothie and then
lunch and dinner are usually a little bit
of Quinoa with sauted veggies lots
and lots of veggies like mushrooms,
cucumbers, maybe a bell pepper, broccoli,
spinach, Swiss chard, and top that with
some protein like sh, ground turkey or
chicken breast. We get one cheat meal
a week which is usually a double-scoop
wae cone, occasionally a burger and
fries before the wae cone.
Naturally smooth? No, I shave. Paul
likes it.
Ink? None. Im just not into it at all. Id
be sick of any tattoo after a year.
Creepy fans? No, I thought we would
have trolls, but all the feedback has been
really positive so far.
Mostly gay audience? It seems more
gay men but some straight women too.
I might guess 60-40 from the comments
so far.
An LGBT cause? Sure, I would love to.
Modeling? No
An 80s song youd like to cover: We
talked about maybe doing Michael Jacksons
Thriller for Halloween but not sure.
Where you donate: I do stu with our
local food banks and we have clothing
donation bins all over the city that makes it
easy to give. I also like to do volunteer work.
Whats next: Were in talks with
producers to maybe do something on
Americas Got Talent for its 2017 season.
Theres also a company in Los Angeles
that has approached us about maybe
doing some live streaming. I also want to
start sprinkling in some classical stu in
the videos as well.

Style vs. substance in your new home

Look beneath the
surface for hidden
problems when buying
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
You walk into the lounge, anxious to
spend the evening with the man you met
on the latest dating app. Looking around
nervously, you spy him leaning against
the bar, sipping from a martini glass.
Hes tall and fit. Hes wearing the latest fashion from head to toe. Hes meticulously well-groomed, with whitened,
evenly spaced teeth, hair stylishly tousled, and the stubble of a beard at just
the right length.
As you approach, he flashes a brilliant
smile, extends a perfectly manicured hand
and says, Good evening. Im Francisco.
He guides you to a table by the window
where he has ordered the chefs tasting
menu with wine pairing. During dinner,
he encourages you to talk about yourself
and hangs on every word. He makes you
laugh and feel at ease.
In the morning you awaken Chez Francisco to find a slightly paunchy bedmate
with grimy hair and bad breath. His elevator shoes are tossed in the corner, the
shirt he wore is frayed around the cuffs
and his pearly white teeth are in a glass
of water on the bedside table. You rise
and begin your walk of shame, wondering
how Cinderfella from last night became a
pumpkin by morning.
Now imagine Francisco is a house.
He is young, fresh and vibrant. His ceilings are vaulted, his roof is new and hes
built like an exposed brick wall. His kitchen has a steely, come-hither look and his
lawn is beautifully manscaped.
But like the morning-after in our first
scenario, you need to prepare yourself
for whats behind the faade before you
invest in your future home and end up
with only the lipstick and the pig.
Many homebuyers learned a valuable
lesson in the early 2000s when self-appointed rehab investors flipped properties like pancakes, taking construction
and design shortcuts along the way, so
begin your due diligence by assembling a
househunting bag o tricks to take with
you when you visit potential suitors with
your agent.
Your bag should include, at minimum, a

A beautifully staged home could be masking hidden problems like water damage and mold.

20 tape measure, a pocket level, a marble

and paper towels. These items will be helpful in looking for things that make you go
hmmm in each home and the camera on
your cell phone will help you remember
specific information about each one after
speed dating through several.
Upon entering the house, take a sniff.
Do you smell fresh paint, new carpet, mildew, pet urine or air freshener? Could a
good smell be masking a bad one? Are
your sinuses or allergies affected?
Look up and look down in each room.
Initially your eye will be drawn to a lovely
kitchen, a sunny window, or elegant staging
and you may miss the water stain on the
ceiling or the gap in the hardwood floors.
Count the number of electrical outlets
in each room to avoid surprises later.
Open and close windows and doors to
see if a) they actually open and close,
b) they lock securely and c) theyre not
cracked or obstructed.
Measure doors, hallways and stairwells
to be sure your furniture will fit. Place
your marble on each hard surface floor; it
should not roll significantly downhill. Use
your pocket level to check other surfaces
such as countertops and window sills.
Flush toilets to see how long their tanks
take to refill. Run water in sinks to check
for good pressure, slow-running drains,
or plumbing leaks in the cabinets below;
keep your paper towels handy.
Open the doors to the dishwasher, stove

and refrigerator. Does one appliance obstruct the other? If the refrigerator is placed
against a side wall, is there enough clearance to remove shelves and bins?
Dont risk the safety of your future party guests. Walk on any porches and decks
and move about normally to see if they
feel sturdy and their handrails are secure.
Look at concrete walls and floors in the
basement. They may have been recently
painted to freshen up the home or the
paint may be covering a more serious
problem such as water intrusion or mold.
All good so far? Then have your agent
assist you in making an offer and call a

professional home inspector to conduct a

thorough check-up.
But if youre ready to run because your
Francisco home is not who you thought
he was, then perhaps Old Joe down the
street is your perfect match. Hes a warm,
solid, interesting man of character who,
with just a little TLC, will stand by you for
years as you form a long-term relationship. And hes open next Sunday.
