PENSIONS VERSUS ACTUAL PAY

A table titled “Pensions that dwarf actual pay” that appeared in The Sunday Republican on May 16 as part of a report on state employee
pensions inaccurately listed 25 state retirees as making more in pensions than their contracted base wage before retirement. Some do;
most do not. Two different types of errors occurred in the analysis. First, the pensions of seven retirees were erroneously matched to the
base wages of other employees who had the same name. Second, the reported base wages of 18 employees who were rehired as tempo-
rary retiree workers were calculated at their hourly rate after retirement rather than their base wage before retirement, based on informa-
tion provided by the state. This is a corrected version of that comparison, with an explanation of the errors that occurred on each one.
