BE STRONG AND
COURAGEOUS ...

MUSIC TO MY EARS!

Sometimes it is hard to stand

up for what we believe is
right. In our class, our goal is
to equip our kids to be
strong and courageous
when they are faced with
choices of doing what is right
or what is wrong. Each week
we study the lives of those
who have made difficult decisions and the consequences
of those decisions. Through
these stories we teach kids
how to recognize Gods way
in the decisions they make.
This theme runs through all
five lessons in this second
unit of our study and, therefore, is appropriate for our
Bible Memory verse!

Be strong and
courageous. Be careful
to obey all the law my
servant Moses gave
you ... that you may be
successful wherever
you go.
Joshua 1:7
P. 4

From a sweet lullaby to hard

rock groups, music is a vital
part of our culture today. But
what exactly is music and
why is it important in the
development of children?
The American Heritage
Dictionary defines MUSIC
as the art of organizing
tones to produce a coherent
sequence of sounds intended to elicit an aesthetic
response in a listener.
Some music is designed to
calm the listener, such as a
child as he is preparing to
fall asleep, and some is
designed to excite the listener, such as a
marching band.
In church we
use music as a
form of worship
... to praise
God or to thank Him. In
Childrens Ministry we also
use music to help kids learn
something such as Bible
verses or books of the Bible.
Studies have shown that

PROVERB POINTS!
Last month in OT Notes there
was an article Hiding Gods
Word in Their Hearts. We
stressed the importance of
memorizing scripture so
Gods Word becomes an
important part our kids lives.
In addition to the Unit Bible
verse(s), we would like to
encourage kids to commit
some of Solomons proverbs
and other key passages to
memory. PROVERB POINTS
is a program that will do just
that. Kids will earn 100 points
for each PP verse they commit to memory. These points
will be used for prizes and
awards determined by the
Childrens Ministry team. The
verses will be printed in OT
Notes to keep you informed.

UNIT 4
WHATS
HAPPENING?
If you were to observe your
childs Bible class for a day,
you would see a lot of different things going on. You
would see the children
singing, playing, writing,
reading, praying, listening,
acting and talking about the
lesson and how it applies to
their lives. The reason for all
these different activities is
because each child, and
adult for that matter, has a
different learning style.
Learning Styles refers to
the ways in which people
take in, store and recall
information. Just as each
person has a distinct temperament and personality,
each has a particular way of
learning. There are three
primary learning styles:
Auditory - learns by hearing
Visual - learns by seeing
Kinesthetic - learns by doing

styles. We vary the length of
each activity according to

reason!

SPARE THE ROD ...?

One of the most difficult parts
of parenting is knowing how to
discipline our children. Some
of us grew up in the spare the
rod, spoil the child household.
Some of us grew up in the I
wanna be your friend household. How do we determine
what is the right way?
First, lets look at the definition
of the word DISCIPLINE.
Discipline (V) - To train by
instruction; to teach what
is right.
Discipline (N) - Training that is
expected to produce a specific
behavior usually associated with
moral improvement.

as well as their attitude. In

other words, the true end
product of discipline is self
discipline! The question is,
how do we teach our kids
the principles that produce
self discipline?

DID YOU KNOW ...

One place to look for guidance concerning discipline is

the Bible. The importance of
discipline is in key references such as: Hebrews
12:6 (the Lord disciplines
those he loves), Proverbs
29:17 (Discipline your son,
and he will give you peace),
and Proverbs 15:5 (A fool
spurns discipline but whoever heeds correction shows
prudence).

the first four of the Ten

Commandments focus on
our relationship with God
and the last six focus on our
relationship with each other?

By far the leading authority

on discipline is Dr. James
Dobson of Focus on the
Family. Check out any book
by Dr. Dobson and you have
a winner! A suggested title is
Dare to Discipline. For
other great references, call
1-800-A-FAMILY.

By looking at these definitions,

we see that DISCIPLINE is the
process as well as the end
product. The process is showing our children what is
expected. The end product is
improvement in their behavior

Today there is much talk
about values, but what does

Christ.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION ..
WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY?

Are you ready for a quiz?

Here is your first question.
Who is responsible for the
Christian Education of our
children? A. The Church
B. Christian Schools C. Parents

If you picked The Church you

are correct. The church is
responsible for the Christian
Education of our children.
That is why we take our job of
teaching kids Gods Word
very seriously! We want to
make the most of our time
together in Bible class. We
want our children to leave

UNIT 7
If you picked Christian
Schools you are correct.
One of the unique characteristics of this growing
education movement is the
freedom to teach Gods
children with principles
based on Biblical truths.
And if you picked Parents
you are, again, correct. In
spite of what some news
stories try to tell you, parents do have the legal
responsibility to educate
their children. Parents can,
and should, pass down the
religious traditions of their
faith. They are to take time
to teach Gods commandments in the home and out
in public. Parents must be
persistent in instruction.

off! By guiding children in

the way they should go.
God promises the child will
not turn from the principles
you have taught them when
they are older. This is especially encouraging to the
parent who has gone
through the turbulent years
of a rebellious teen. Gods
promises to us today are
just as important as His
promises to Abraham and
Moses.

If you have any questions

concerning parenting your
children, feel free to contact

with appropriate resources.

Now are you ready for your

second question? Here it is:
Which is the BEST
answer to Question 1?
A. The Church
B. Christian Schools C. Parents

Based on the ultimate

authority on truth, the Bible,
the correct answer is
Parents. It is parents who
have the responsibility to
raise their children in the
way of the Lord. The church
and Christian schools act in
a supportive role by not
only offering Bible Study
classes for children, but
parenting skill classes.

CHILDRENS MINISTRIES

UNIT 8

YOU WANT ME TO
WHAT?

One of the greatest rewards

in Childrens Ministries is
when a teacher excitedly tells
me that a child has accepted
Christ as his Lord and Savior.
After weeks and months of
teaching a class, a child
opens his heart to the King of
Kings! WOW!
Jesus said, Let the little
children come to me, and
do not hinder them for
the kingdom of heaven
belongs to such as these.
Matthew 19:14

Whenever I read this verse, I

envision Jesus sitting in the
midst of children with their
eyes cast on His gentle face
and their ears intend on His
every word. o many times I
see the same intense look on
our childrens faces as they
listen to their teachers impart
Christs love for them. What
an awesome responsibility,
and joy, we have to see that
our children are taught Gods
truth!

Guy Doud, 1987 Teacher of

the year stated teachers
are Molder of Dreams. I
think this is especially true
of Christian educators for
they are adding those precious building blocks upon
the foundation that you as
parents have laid which are
so essential to the spiritual
development of our children.

Our ministry team is always

looking for those who share
the same concerns we do
about the education of our
children. The backbone of
ministry is parent involvement. From classroom
teachers to resource room
attendants, everyone is
important to the success of

our ministry. Wont you be in

prayer about how you can be
a part of this important team
of volunteers? Wont you be
a Molder of Dreams? Wont
you learn more about being a
better spiritual leader of your
family by modeling for your
child the importance of giving
in ministry to others? Let us
know of your interest! Please
call the church office to find
out how you can help. With
your promise of a willing
heart, we promise to provide
you with the resources and
teach you the skills needed
to be a servant for Christ in
ministry with His children.
