COURSE DESCRIPTION
Evolution and history of domestic livestock. Diversity of livestock (Genetic resources
diversity). Livestock evolution and development trend in Africa and the world. History of
development of some breeds: Holstein-Friesian, Boar goat, Merino sheep etc. Indigenous
animal genetic resources of Ethiopia. Necessity and principles of characterizing, documenting
and assessing of livestock diversity. Techniques for analysis and characterization. Genetic
effects of decreasing population size. Genetic erosion. Conservation of animal genetic
resources: In. situ and Ex situ conservation, cryopreservation. Proper utilization of animal
genetic resources. International and national patenting laws.

Course objectives: At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
Students will have knowledge on the local and exotic brreds of live stock. Analysis
and characterization of livestock diversity
Expected/learning outcomes: students should able to know the importance of conservation

The mode of the delivery of the course combines lectures, discussion, questioning and
answering, readings, assignments, individual and /or group works and presentation.

COURSE POLICY
All students are expected to abide by the code of conduct of students
(article 166 and 166.1.1, of The Senate Legislation of Bahir Dar University
May 20, 2005) throughout this course. Academic dishonesty, including
cheating, fabrication, and plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be
reported to concerned bodies for action. Students will be active
participants in the course. You need to ask questions and raise issues. You
are expected to do all the assignments submit and present you are
supposed to accomplish. You are expected to attend class regularly. If you
miss more than 85% of the class attendance you will not sit for final
exams. Please try to be on time for class. Cell phones MUST be turned of
before entering the class as they are disruptive and annoying to all of us
in the class. You are responsible for all class announcements and changes.
