COURSE DESCRIPTION
Evolution and history of domestic livestock. Diversity of livestock (Genetic resources
diversity). Livestock evolution and development trend in Africa and the world. History of
development of some breeds: Holstein-Friesian, Boar goat, Merino sheep etc. Indigenous
animal genetic resources of Ethiopia. Necessity and principles of characterizing, documenting
and assessing of livestock diversity. Techniques for analysis and characterization. Genetic
effects of decreasing population size. Genetic erosion. Conservation of animal genetic
resources: In. situ and Ex situ conservation, cryopreservation. Proper utilization of animal
genetic resources. International and national patenting laws.
Course objectives: At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
Students will have knowledge on the local and exotic brreds of live stock. Analysis
and characterization of livestock diversity
