Be there for support but let her direct the conversation

Even if you have been
through it, Bancke said
you should still be careful saying this because
every situation, every
treatment is different.
Dont say, My mom, or
sister, had breast cancer
last year and then died.
You think youre helping,
but thats not good and
no one wants to hear the
horror stories or the bad.
They want to hear the uplifting stories, she said.
Finally, dont blow off
a breast cancer diagnosis
by saying, It will be OK.
No one dies of breast cancer anymore.
It is true that less women die of breast cancer
now than in the 80s and
90s; however, according
to the American Cancer
Society, breast cancer is
the second leading cause

of cancer death in women. Only lung cancer kills

more women each year.
Henifin said when a
friend or family member
starts losing hair, dont
blow that off either. You
may think saying, Its
just hair. It will grow
back, is comforting,
but for the woman going
through it hair loss is a
big deal.
Yes, in most cases it
does grow back, but right
now its very symbolic of
a woman going through
cancer, Henifin said. It
is like this beacon for everyone saying, Im going
through cancer.
There are plenty of
things you can do for a
friend or family member with breast cancer,
though most important
may just be letting the

woman know she is not

alone, said Henifin.
Knowing that your
friends and the people
that love you, youre still
on their minds ... keeps
you thinking youre part
of the living, she said.
Even something like
bringing over a cup of
coffee and talking can
be very appreciated by
someone who may not
be working anymore and
spends a lot of time at
home alone. And when
you are talking, dont be
afraid to talk about you,
Henifin said.
Id rather hear whats
going on in your life than
whats going on in my life
because it gets really old
talking about my life

and stuff.
Henifin also said to be

As a woman, were
terrible about asking for
help for ourselves, Henifin said.
Dont wait for her to
ask for help; take the
initiative and offer help.
Heres a few things
Bancke said are small,
but can mean a lot to a
woman battling breast
cancer:
Pick her kids up from
school,
Clean her house,
Go grocery shopping
for her,
Stop by with milkshake or other treat and
visit for a while,
Tell her youll bring
over dinner for her family the next night.
Henifin added that a

husband or partner leaving love notes around the

house or taking her to
get a manicure can help
a woman continue to feel
beautiful and loved while
going through cancer
treatments.
Your femininity, your
sensuality is effected,
Henifin said. Anything
that the partner or husband can do to to make
you feel better is appreciated.
Lastly, it can be tempting to pry into the situation and ask a lot of questions about the diagnosis
and treatment.
Bancke said its OK
to ask, Do you want to
talk about it? However,
let her decide how much
to confide in you. Some
women are more private
about their situations

Cutting edge cancer

treatment right in
your own backyard
By Rick Charmoli
Cadillac News

REED CITY When it

comes to breast cancer
there have been many advances in technology and
you might be surprised the
Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer Center in Reed City is
on the cutting edge.
Spectrum Health Reed
City Hospital opened the
center in 2013 and it is a
treatment facility bringing together the full range
of services for patients
and families all in one
location. Patients have access to multiple services
and therapy under one
roof including a medical
oncologist, a dietician,
social worker as well as
treatment and diagnosis
options such as surgery,
ultra sound, radiation and
chemo therapy.
Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer Center Director Irene
Balowski said having such
a center in a rural community in Osceola County
is huge for the patients on
many levels.
I like to say breast cancer, and all cancers for that
matter, are treated based
on National Comprehensive Cancer Network
guidelines, which are
national guidelines, she
said. Patients will think
they need to go to U of M
or other sites, which really
isnt true because they will
get the same treatment
where ever you go.

Balowski said having

cancer treatment is a very
fatiguing journey so when
a patient has to travel long
distances it just adds to
that taxation on their bodies and psyche. To Balowski, the value of being able
to stay close to home, know
the people who are helping
with treatment and knowing you are getting the
same treatment with the
same equipment locally is
something that helps give
better outcomes for a patients cancer journey.
When it comes to the
technology, the center has
some of the most advanced
treatments and ways to diagnose cancer available.
This includes a CT Simulator and a Linear Accelerator.
The CT Simulator produces detailed images
which are used for designing treatment plans
unique to each individual
patients anatomy. The machine produces 4D images
so the cancer team at the
center can have the data to
plan radiation therapy. It
gives pictures of the tumor
and critical body structures and makes sure they
are aligned.
The radiation treatment
is then simulated to ensure
the placement of the radiation beams are accurate.
The Linear Accelerator
rotates around the patient
to deliver treatment beams
from any angle and the
center boasts the most

advanced technology in
the region. The Linear Accelerator can deliver all
forms of advanced external beam radiotherapy and
the precision of the beam
is measured in increments
of less than a millimeter.
It allows for shorter
treatment times and quiet
operation, which helps
make patients more comfortable. Patients even
have the ability to listen to
music or talk to the technologist during the treatments. Having the Linear
Accelerator also allows for
the center to participate
in clinical trials that were
previously not an option.
We are always thinking
about the patient. We will
work with physicians to
make sure the patients get
what they need, Balowski
said.
The center also offers
MedNow, to do things such
as genetic counseling.
Spectrum Health MedNow
is a telehealth program
that gives patients the ability to meet with doctors or
specialists not in the area
to receive care via video
visits over the internet.
Instead of having to
drive to Grand Rapids or
further, we have the capability to do it here. That
has been well received by
the patients, Balowski
said. The possibility of
telemedicine is always in
the future. We may be able
to have other kinds of services with MedNow.

Low tech mixed with high tech

means better results
The center also is looking at adding a new piece
of techology that will help
with the diagnosis and
treatment of breast cancer
within the next year. That
piece of technology is a 3D
mammogram machine.
Digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D
mammography, is a new
screening and diagnostic
breast imaging tool to improve the early detection
of breast cancer. During
the 3D part of the exam,
an x-ray arm sweeps over
the breast, taking multiple
images in seconds. Images
are then displayed as a series of thin slices that can
be viewed by radiologists
as individual images or in
a dynamic interactive animation.

Although the center does

have some of the most
advanced technology at its
disposal, Balowski said it
is the low-tech part of the
treatment that she believes
also is important.
The center boasts a wellness center that includes
integrative therapies for
those patients that prefer a
holistic approach to health
and wellness. It includes
massage, lymphedema
therapy, Reiki therapy, auricular or ear acupuncture
acupressure and reflexology, which is all free to
patients.
The wellness center also
offers the American Cancer Societys Look Good,
Feel Better Program that
has volunteer, licensed cosmetologists help patients
with makeup, skin care

and appearance. Again, patients receive makeup and

skin care products free of
charge. The cosmetologist
also assist with wigs including professional fitting
and styling.
We do a community

patients to find out what
they want. From that
we build in to the center
things we have heard from
our patients, Balowski
said. One example is the
reflexology.

A miracle treatment and positive attitude

Jennifer sought medical
help last fall. In October, she
was diagnosed with stage
IV cancer that had metastasized to her lymph nodes,
lungs and to her right side.
The first goal was to
shrink the tumors before
surgery, using a combination chemo pill and hormonal pill, specifically for
menopausal women with
advanced cancer.

Foods like cheese and crackers, tuna
fish, cereal bars and trail mix are good for
this purpose, Mihalick said.
She said those battling cancer might
want to consider preparing meals that
would be easy to make and easy to eat as
opposed to large, complex meals.
Mihalick said to make sure and check
with your doctor before starting a workout routine in ensure this wouldnt cause
more harm than good.
Foods to eat to reduce chances of
getting breast cancer:
Fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads,
pasta, cereal, spaghetti noodles, fish, and
beans. Basically anything high in fiber.
Foods to avoid:
Red meats like beef, pork and lamb.
Processed meats like sausage, hot dogs,
salami, bacon, ham and jerky. Anything
high in saturated and trans fats.
