Point & Plover

P

all has arrived with all the beautiful colors

we can look at for hours and days on end.
Soon to follow will be that Wisconsin chill in
the air and the flutter of white flakes from the
clouds and sky. The children are preparing for
the upcoming Halloween holiday by deciding
on what custom they will wear. We now spend
our Friday nights and weekends watching the
pig skin be thrown around, but be sure to
spend some extra time outdoors, especially with
the family, rather than watching the negative election campaign ads and news
coverage on the TV. Most of us probably cant wait for the election signs to be
taken down and for the election to be over with. We can however wait, for the
winter that is soon to follow. Enjoy the fall season, it has always been my favorite
time of year with all the colors of the woods, the deer running through the fields,
and the farmers completing their harvests.
This October issue of the Point & PloverPublication willinclude stories you can
read while perhaps sitting under a colorful tree outside. These stories include a
way to enjoy the upcoming Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra season. Read
about a local business that takes time to listen to their customers and designs
a home for them like they have always imagined. Discover how to keep your
investments safe and secure during the upcoming elections season. Read about a
a new construction plan that will allow those dealing with cancer to receive better
care. Also, be sure to catch all the upcoming October events in the Point &
Plover Events Calendar. These stories are waiting for you inside the October 2016
monthly issue of the Point & Plover Publication.
If you know of a local resident or business that we should all learn about or, if you
have an event or activity you want to share with everyone in the Stevens Point
and Plover communities, please let us know. The Point & PloverPublicationis the
localcommunity's publication, and we all wish to know more aboutresidents and
neighbors and how special a place ourcommunities are.
Last but not least, this magazine is possiblebecause of the support of its many
sponsors. Be sure to remember them, and show how much you appreciate their
support of your local publication by supporting them and their valued community
businesses.

Closing the Street for Bouncing Basketballs

Some streets in the downtown area were closed to make room for basketball courts and hoops when the Gus Macker
Basketball Tournament made an appearance in Stevens Point this past September. Boys and girls, starting at ages 8 and all
the way up to those in their 40s, took part in 3-on-3 basketball games on the asphalt of the streets and parking lots. The Gus

UW-STEVENS POINT IN TOP TEN OF MIDWESTERN PUBLIC
UNIVERSITIES
The University of WisconsinStevens Point is again ranked
among the top ten public
universities in the Midwest
according to the U.S. News
and World Report.
The magazines 2017
rankings place UW-Stevens
Point as tied for ninth in the top tier of Midwestern comprehensive
public universities. The university was recognized for having high
student retention rates, improved four-year graduation rate and a solid
reputation among peer institutions.
We are pleased UW-Stevens Point is recognized as one of the
best universities in the Midwest, said Chancellor Bernie Patterson.
We are especially pleased that our graduation rate improved by 4
percentage points in one year.
These rankings are a good tool for students who are beginning to
look at colleges and universities, but may not be that familiar with the
UW-Stevens Point campus, Patterson said. If students are looking at
the top-ranking universities in the Midwest, they should be looking at
UW-Stevens Point.
U.S. News and World Report assessed 56 public universities in the
12-state Midwest area. UW-Stevens Point provides a high quality
academic experience with a low student-faculty ratio of 21:1. It is also
a great value, Patterson noted, as Wisconsin residents pay $4,080 in
tuition and fees per semester.
Each day we strive to give our students the best possible education at
an affordable cost, he said. We continually look for ways to increase
student success. We are launching a new academic advising model
this fall and offering additional sections of high-demand courses to
help even more students complete their degrees in four years.

INAUGURAL EVENING OF HOPE

The American Cancer Society hosted the Inaugural Evening of Hope

CENTRAL WISCONSIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS

ENTRE NOUS
Pull up a chair. Take a taste. Come join
us. Life is so endlessly delicious. Ruth
Reichl. The CWSO opens its 68th season,
A Sumptuous Feast of Sound, on October
8 and 9. The concerts, titled Entre
Nous, will feature the exquisite artistry of
David Taylor, Associate Concertmaster
of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
who will perform Beethovens Violin
Concerto, Op. 61 in D Major. A Splendid
Soloist (Chicago Sun Times). Under
the direction of Dr. Patrick Miles, the
concerts will open with Hector Berliozs
Roman Carnival Overture, widely regarded as one of the composers
most popular works. The concerts will also include Paul Hindemiths
Mathis der Maler. In 1933, the composer was faced with a dilemma as
a German with a Jewish wife. The question of what the responsibility
of the artist was in a time of evil and violence was the inspiration for
his opera Mathis der Maler (Mathis the Painter). However, before
Hindemith completed the opera, he was commissioned to write
an orchestral piece for the 1934 Berlin Philharmonic Concert Tour
and used the operas preludes and interludes as a complete suite.
The concerts are generously sponsored by the Sentry Insurance
Foundation and the Worth Company.
Lori Skelton, host of Wisconsin Public Radios Afternoon Classics,
will provide commentary prior to each selection on the program at
the weekends concerts. Ms. Skelton, classical music host since 1993,
can also be heard on Wisconsin Classical, Sundays, and is a regular
contributor to Central Times Food Friday, on WPRs Idea Network.
David Taylor, known to Chicago audiences as a versatile soloist,
chamber player, and orchestral musician, is a native of Canton,
Ohio. A graduate of the Juilliard School, Mr. Taylor joined the
Cleveland Orchestra in 1974 prior to his appointment with the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1979 and has also served as
Acting-Concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and

Concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Praised for his

well-focused tone, poised line, and aristocratic phrasing, (Chicago
Sun-Times), Mr. Taylor is also a respected teacher, with studios at
the Moody Bible Institute and at the Chicago College of Performing
Arts at Roosevelt University. Mr. Taylor will coach a master class on
Wednesday, October 5 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in Michelsen Hall, Noel
Fine Arts Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The
public is invited to attend free of charge.
The concerts will take place in the Theater@1800 in the Sentry
complex, 1800 North Point Avenue, Stevens Point. Saturdays
performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and Sundays is at 4:00 p.m.
Concert tickets are $12 (students with I.D.), $22 (seniors 65+) and $27
(adults) and are available on-line at cwso.org/tickets, the CWSO office,
located in the Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum, 800 Main Street, or at
the door. Tickets may also be purchased by calling the CWSO office:
715-345-7726.
The CWSO, whose mission is to enrich, engage, and educate through
the power and performance of live music, is affiliated with the College
of Fine Art and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point and the City of Stevens Point. The CWSO season is sponsored
in part by the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of
Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Wisconsin Public
Radio is proud to be this seasons media sponsor. For more information

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF PORTAGE & WOOD COUNTIES

DISTRICT ANNOUNCES JOHN NOEL- 2016 LAUREATEWISCONSIN BUSINESS HALL OF FAME
John Noel was recently recognized
as a distinguished Laureate at
The Wisconsin Business Hall of
Fame Induction Ceremony held in
Milwaukee. This honor is reserved for
the best of the best business savvy,
entrepreneurial visionaries and those
who show exemplary community
spirit.
The first Wisconsin Business Hall of Fame was held in 1990 and
has grown to be a well-known honor bestowed only upon the most
excellent leaders in the business world. The stories of these men and
women come to life in a highly interactive showcase exhibit at the
Junior Achievement Kohls Education Center in Milwaukee. Many of
the Laureates are inventors, entrepreneurs, CEOs of Fortune 500
companies, and small business owners who share a commitment to
excellence, a drive and a passion to achieve.
These distinguished Laureates created better, more productive lives for
their employees who quite often became family to them over the years.
They fashioned new and innovative ways of doing business; they set
astonishing goalsand then exceed them. They created cultures and
values that were incomparable.
The Portage & Wood Counties District of Junior Achievement was
pleased to find the Statewide Laureate Committee (which includes
Marty Loy, UWSP Dean- College of Professional Studies at UWSP)
identified John Noel as a worthy candidate to be nominated for this
honor. This came as no surprise to our local JA staff and JA Board of
Directors; however, to know John Noel would be honored at a statewide
level in such a prestigious way was extraordinary. John has made such a
difference in our community, our state and even around the world- this

was one worthy way to congratulate him and his achievements. His
acceptance of this nomination was
It all began when John opened a small travel insurance company in
the basement of his home in 1985. Travel Guard International quickly
expanded through acquisitions and soon grew to become the most
respected name in travel insurance and emergency-assistance in the
world. Throughout many successful and wise business decisions John
often thought of the employees he had come to call family- he kept
them in his thoughts as he knew their families and their lives mattered
as just as much as his own families thoughts and lives. He and his
businesses have created and maintained thousands of positions in the
central Wisconsin area. John recently retired at Berkshire Hathaway
Travel Protection and continues as Chairman of Compass Properties;
however, his many years of business there and elsewhere will not be
forgotten. Without John and Patty Noels entrepreneurial spirits and
desire to serve their community well the Stevens Point and all of central
Wisconsin business atmosphere, educational scene and art influences
could be shaped quite differently.
In addition to Johns large entrepreneurial portfolio he and his wife are
deeply philanthropic. They are involved with groups and events such
as, our local Operation Bootstrap, the Portage County Cultural Festival,
the Noel Compass Scholar Program at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, the Boys and Girls Club of Portage County, and in 1993
they established the Make a Mark Foundation which is an organization
that focuses on AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa.
Again, Junior Achievement of Portage & Wood Counties District is
proud to congratulate John Noel as the newest Laureate to the 2016
Wisconsin Business Hall of Fame.
If you would like more information on Junior Achievement of Portage
& Wood Counties please contact Serena Sblendorio, District Director
at ssblendorio@jawis.org. Our educational programs provide almost
3,000 local students with business professionals who volunteer their
time to lead hands-on programming centered around entrepreneurship,
fiscal literacy and work-readiness skills. Our programs are 100% funded
by generous local businesses, foundations and personal donations.
We are currently accepting teacher requests for JA to be taught in
local classrooms. Simply visit www.wisconsin.ja.org to register your

TECH COLLEGE BOARD RECOGNIZES MARTEN MACHINING

AS "FUTUREMAKERS PARTNER"
The Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Board awarded its
"Futuremakers Partner" award to Marten Machining in mid-September,
in partnership with Mid-State Technical College. The award recognizes
the dynamic and enduring partnerships between Wisconsin's technical
colleges and their community and employer partners. What started as
a one-person machining operation in 1984 in company president Alan
Martens garage has grown into a widely-recognized precision tool
manufacturer in Stevens Point. In an era of shifting workforce needs,
Marten developed a comprehensive plan to actively support education
and skill development at the K-12 and postsecondary levels. "When
visitors come to
our facility, we
always get the
same question,"
said Marten.
"How did we
develop a young
and highly skilled
October 2016 | Point & Plover Publication 11

workforce?" Marten said the answer is Mid-State Technical College

and the Stevens Point community. Its humbling to receive this award
from a valuable organization that plays a critical role for education in
our community. Marten Machining is a regular contributor to MidState scholarship programs. In addition, Marten and his son, David,
both serve on Mid-States Machine Tool Technician program advisory
committee. The pair also devote significant time and energy to enhance
the image and awareness of technical education, attending college
open house events, speaking publicly about the impact of Wisconsins
Youth Apprenticeship program on their business, and collaborating
with local workforce development partners to host tours of their facility.
Alan mentioned tonight that 55% of his team came to the company
from Mid-State, said Mid-State President Sue Budjac. We take a lot
of pride in the skills and value our students and graduates bring to the
Martens' operation. "This is a company that doesnt just support MidState, said WTCS Board Vice President Mark Tyler. But in partnership
with the college and many others, theyre part of the fabric of this
community.

FUN FOR

Article by Hope Hahn - Photography by members of the Redeemer Lutheran Church

his year, the Redeemer Lutheran Church will be

holding its 3rd annual Crafticopia event on Saturday
October 15 from 9 am to 4 pm. Admission is free,
and there is plenty of free parking at the church. The
Redeemer Luther Church is located at 900 Brilowski
Rd. Many church members know it simply as the church behind Fleet
Farm.
Crafticopia first began its journey in 2014, by a group of RLC
members as a way to thank its community partners, and celebrate
RLCs unique culture. Organizing this event each year is the Redeemer
Lutheran Churchs way of spotlighting its partners in the community
and showing their appreciation for everything they do. Come for the
craft vendors and explore different types of seasonal crafts, try fresh
baked goods, Sweet Basil Pesto, or other food items, but dont forget
to bring the kids. They will have lots of fun with the kids activities
while you check out the crafts. Last year, the kids made stained glass
shapes with clear sticky paper and tissue squares. The event provides
something for everyone to enjoy and it is fun for all ages.

visitors will have the opportunity to indulge in warm breakfast sweets

on a first come first serve basis.
I changed my vacation, so I wont miss it, a member of the RLC
church stated.
One of the traditions RLC holds is making pesto. This tradition
started with long time member Bill Zimdars. First as pesto making
parties in Bills back yard, but then the tradition grew over time to
include more congregational members, and then eventually it grew
even more to include the growing of basil. Literally! - The members
put together a garden at RLC almost exclusively dedicated to basil.
This year, members of congregation made more than 200 jars of the
luscious Italian condiment to sell at Crafticopia. The cheese for the

dancers. The Charys Hess Transcribing Dance Company will lead a
family moves session for young toddlers through elementary- aged
kids and their parents.
Crafticopia isnt just a craft show in Wisconsin - its a craft show and
more! It is unique with nearly 50 of Wisconsins best craft venders
inside and out plus, live entertainment, games for kids, fresh baked
goods, other food items, and seasonal handcrafted items. Visitors
will have the opportunity to meet the community partners, and
buy some of that famous Sweet Basil Pesto which is made from an
heirloom recipe using locally sourced ingredients and basil from RLCs
very own on-site garden.
There is a great mix of vendors some who are returning and others
who are new. The Wisconsin Nicaragua partners brings handmade
items including: dolls dresses, woven baskets, Wooden barn quilts,
soaps, lotions, jewelry, beaded serving utensils, greeting cards and
wooden toys. This year one of the unique vendors will be selling hand
crafted musky lures.
Food will be available for all to enjoy including a bake sale. Early

pesto comes from Wisconsin Dairy State Cheese, and the Olive Oil
is locally sourced from Diversi-Tea. The limited supply of Crafticopia
Sweet Basil Pesto is made from Chilean Arbequina Extra Virgin Olive
Oil. Last year, they sold 240 jars of pesto, and this year 360 jars are
currently available.
Another member stated, I have tasted the pesto this group makes
for their sale. It is the BEST Ive ever tasted. I use it in my lasagna and
many other dishes. Its great right out of the jar on chips or crackers!

Buy extra and put it in your freezer for later.

The money raised from Crafticopia helps RLC to further its mission
which is to gather, grow, go into the community and contribute.
The RLC is an active community- focused church, so many of the
projects the church completes help the community partners in their
businesses. RLCs community partners include: The Mobile Pantry,
Shama, Lutheran Social Services, and the Wisconsin Nicaragua
Partners.

If you are a creative person who shares a love for crafting and food
we hope to see you at the third annual Crafticopia event. Come for
the great craft ideas for your next project, but stay for the pesto, fresh
baked goods and other food items throughout the event. Everyone in
the community is invited! We look forward to seeing you there!

Cindy Kinsella, Breast Cancer Survivor and
Hope Is Building Campaign Co-Chair

Article by Candise Miller & Leah Knights

indy Kinsella, a Plover resident and mother of two,

returned home from a family vacation eight years ago
to a diagnosis left on her voicemail. You have cancer.
Click. Following this devastating diagnosis was almost
two months of worry and unknowns. Cindy and
her husband, Joe, ultimately received quality care
from excellent providers; but their journey to that point was one of
confusion and fear.
Three years later, Kim
Hodgson, a native
of Stevens Point and
mother of three, was
also diagnosed with
breast cancer. By this
point, the providers
and staff at Ministry
Saint Michaels
Hospital had made
vast improvements
to the biopsy timeline
and overall treatment
process for breast
cancer patients. Kim journeyed through breast cancer treatment
with the help of the Breast Patient Nurse Navigator Program, a
program in place to help guide patients through their breast cancer
treatment journey.
16 Point & Plover Publication | October 2016

Angie Heuck, Director of Saint Michaels Foundation describes the

nurse navigators as the patients BFF during their journey with
breast cancer stating that If patients or their support person,
spouse or family member have questions, they are there. Night or
day. They help answer questions, schedule appointments and help
comfort and calm you throughout the entire process.
Today, Cindy and Kim are both cancer-free thanks to the treatment
they received at
Ministry Saint
Michaels Hospital
and the unwavering
support of their loved
ones. But, the journey
is not over.
Stories like Cindy
and Kims are the
motivation behind
the Hope is Building
campaign, a project
lead by the Saint
Michaels Foundation
to raise funds for a Breast Care Center at Ministry Saint Michaels
Hospital in Stevens Point. Providers and associates at Ministry Saint
Michaels Hospital are committed to infuse Ministrys philosophy of
person-centered care into every aspect of a womans treatment.

The hospital is currently structured in a way that makes breast

care patients move from floor to floor and from department to
department at a time when they feel most vulnerable. The new
Breast Care Center will eliminate barriers by bringing care to one
central location. The Hope is Building campaigns goal is to raise
funds for a new Breast Care Center to deliver the kind of care our
community needs and, more importantly, deserves.

The Breast Care Center is not exclusively for patients going through
cancer treatment; the center will provide timely, compassionate and
individualized care for all breast care patients in the community.
The Hope is Building campaign is an opportunity to build a culture of
prevention and early detection for lifesaving outcomes. If you and
your family have been touched by breast cancer and would like to get
more involved, please visit hopeisbuilding.com.

In addition to funding a new

Breast Care Center, a portion
of Hope is Building campaign
funds will support the ongoing
efforts of the Angel Fund.
The Angel Fund ensures that
every woman in the Stevens
Point community has the opportunity to get an annual breast cancer
screening, regardless of their ability to pay. The Angel Fund supports
the increasing demand for breast care among the women in our
community who could not otherwise afford it.
The Hope is Building campaign is moving into its public phase with
great momentum. Over the last year, the campaign has had the
support of hundreds committed community leaders, volunteers and
Ministry providers and associates who have been working diligently
to lay the foundation to reach the campaign goal of raising 4 million
dollars. These individuals are donating their time and resources to
do so much more than build a new breast care center. The Hope is
Building campaign is an opportunity for the community to rally behind
local women like Cindy and Kim to shape the future of the health of
the Stevens Point community.

PUTTING A

SPIN ON THEIR

STYLE
Article by Hope Hahn | Photography by Leah Knights

n five short years, Brad Anderson has transformed Designers 2,

also known as d2, into a unique destination where individuals can
collaborate with he and his staff to create environments that not
only reflecttheir personal style, but also feature the unexpected.
Like the stylish spaces they create, nothing about Designers 2 is
cookie cutter. The businesss unique history began more than 30
years ago when Gayle Gieger and Marsha Sowle started a wedding
flower and dcor business named The Weed Patch. That basement
business grew into a local interior design firm that helped families in
Portage County transform their houses into homes that reflected their
personalities.
In 2011, Anderson purchased Designers 2 and added his own unique
vision to what he saw as an opportunity to offer the local community
custom, upscale and full-service design expertise, furnishings and
home dcor.
The Designers 2 team consists of Brad Anderson, Gail Banke and
Marsha Sowle. Together they combine more than 50 years design
expertise. "We operate as a team, and learn from each other" says
Banke.
18 Point & Plover Publication | October 2016

With a 2,000 square foot showroom, Designers 2 is poised to

transform yet again. The impressive new design studio includes
added benefits to help Anderson and his team exceed the
expectations of those they work with, such as a new project center to
allow designers a more personal, 1:1 experience with clients.
Additionally, the new studio will triple the amount of showcase space,
allowing for a broader selection and wider range of options from
which clients are able to choose. While their commitment to furniture
and home dcor will remain the same, they are expanding product
offerings to feature womens accessories, including purses, scarves,
and jewelry, as well as designer jeans for men and women, with
brands that are often found only in larger cities. The showroom will
also feature a wide variety of specialty candles with brands that are
new to our area. The showroom will also showcase a broader array of
home decor.
While the increased showroom space will open up new possibilities
for additional merchandise, their expertise, passion and strong
commitment to their clients has undoubtedly made them a successful
local business.

We Put a Spin on Their Style is a daily way of doing business at

Designers 2.
Designers 2 works with a broad spectrum of individuals. Whether
new to the area, building a new home, remodeling or freshening up a
room. The design team can assist throughout the entire process.
Jayne Petruska, a Designers 2 client stated, Its all about the process
and the end result.

Today, Designers 2 serves both residential and commercial clientele.

Their showroom consists of the latest trends in home design,
including lighting, furniture, accessories, and gift items.

Jayne worked with Designers 2 on her first and only home build.
Anderson and Jayne began working together while Janyes house was
still in the design phase. Together, they created a theme that would
be carried throughout the home, the property, and ultimately, carried
throughout the interior dcor. Anderson had a ton of patience, and
he is a spectacular listener, Jayne stated.

Since some of the interior design work at Designers 2 entails new

home construction and home remodels, they work with dozens of
local contractors. They help their clients arrange every detail of their
home - from the paint colors to flooring and plumbing fixtures, to
home accessories and furniture.

Anderson was able to see Jaynes vision, her needs, and her hopes for
her home. Anderson applied his interior design expertise and brought
unique and creative ideas to the project. The upfront work and agreed
upon vision allowed for a synergistic working relationship, an efficient
process, and a sensational end product that Jayne now loves and
enjoys every day.

When working on a project, Designers 2 can help select the correct

furniture, paint colors, textiles and accessories, ensuring alignment
with their clients' taste and unique style. Designers 2 will turn your
dream home into reality.

The store expansion demonstrates that Designers 2 is committed to

the Stevens Point and surrounding area. "We are committed to the
people of our fine community and what we do," Anderson stated.

At Designers 2, Anderson and his team work hard to maintain a

strong commitment to customer satisfaction. Working with one of
the knowledgeable designers at the firm provides customers with
hands-on and worry-free assistance throughout the creative process.

The Designers 2 grand opening and holiday preview for the new
studio will take place November 7th from 5-9 p.m. There will be a
silent auction featuring products and services from many of the lines
they offer at Designers 2. The proceeds from the silent auction will be
donated to the United Way of Portage County.

VOTE FOR SMART INVESTMENT MOVES

he presidential election is little more
than a month away. Like all elections,
this one has generated considerable
interest, and, as a citizen, you may well
be following it closely. But as an investor,
how much should you be concerned about the
outcome?

Probably not as much as you might think.

Historically, the financial markets have
done well and done poorly under both
Democratic and Republican administrations.
Also, many factors affecting investment
performance have little or nothing to do
with the occupant of the White House.
Consequently, no one can claim, with any
certainty, that one candidate is going to be

But in evaluating a presidents potential
effect on your investments, you also need
to consider something else: Our political
system does not readily accommodate radical
restructuring of any kind. So its difficult for
any president to implement huge policy shifts
and thats actually good for the financial
markets, which, by their nature, dislike
uncertainty, chaos and big changes.
The bottom line? From your viewpoint as an

Home Matters - Sponsored by Coldwell Banker - The Real Estate Group

15 WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR

WINTER
Article by Tiffany Broecker & Todd Reilly of Coldwell Banker The Real Estate Group

ow that fall is officially here, it's time to prepare your home

for cold weather. These steps, most of which you can do
yourself, and will help lower your utility bills and protect your
investment.

TUNE UP YOUR HEATING SYSTEM.

For about $80 to $100, a technician will inspect your furnace or heat
pump to be sure the system is clean and in good repair, and that it
can achieve its manufacturer-rated efficiency. The inspection also
measures carbon-monoxide leakage.
REVERSE YOUR CEILING FANS.
If your ceiling fan has a reverse switch, use it to run the fan's blades
in a clockwise direction after you turn on your heat. Energy Star says
the fan will produce an updraft and push down into the room, heated
air from the ceiling--remember hot air rises. This is especially helpful
in rooms with high ceilings. It might even allow you to turn down your
thermostat by a degree or two for greater energy savings.
PREVENT ICE DAMS.
If your home had lots of icicles last winter--or worse, ice dams,
which can cause meltwater to back up and flow into your house,
take steps to prevent potential damage this year. A home-energy
auditor or weatherization contractor can identify and fix air leaks and
inadequate insulation in your home's attic that can lead to ice dams.
INSPECT THE ROOF.
Or at least scan it closely with binoculars. Look for damaged, lose
or missing shingles that may leak during winters storms or from
melting snow. If need be, hire a handyman to repair a few shingles.
Check and repair breaks in the flashing seals around vent stacks
and chimneys, too. If your roof is flat and surfaced with asphalt and
pebbles, rake or blow off fall leaves and pine needles, which hold
moisture.
CAULK AROUND WINDOWS AND DOORS.
Gaps between siding, windows or door frames that are bigger
than the width of a nickel, need exterior caulk. Check the joints in
24 Point & Plover Publication | October 2016

windows and door frames, too. Silicone caulk is best for exterior use
because it wont shrink and its impervious to the elements. Check
window-glazing putty, too--It seals glass into the window frame. Add
weather-stripping as needed around doors, making sure you cannot
see any daylight from inside your home.
CLEAN THE GUTTERS.
If your gutters are full, water can back up against the house and
damage roofing, siding and wood trim OR cause leaks and ice dams.
You'll typically pay $70 to $225 to clean gutters on a single-story
house, depending on its size. Also look for missing or damaged
gutters and fascia boards and repair them.
DIVERT WATER.
Add extensions to downspouts, so that water runs at least 3 to 4 feet
away from the foundation.
TURN OFF EXTERIOR FAUCETS.
Undrained water in pipes can freeze, which will cause pipes to burst
as the ice expands. Start by disconnecting all garden hoses and
draining the water that remains in faucets. If you dont have frostproof faucets (homes more than ten to 15 years old typically do not),
turn off the shut-off valve inside your home.
DRAIN YOUR LAWN IRRIGATION SYSTEM.
Draining sprinkler-system pipes, as with spigots, will help avoid
freezing and leaks. Hire a professional to do the job. Your sprinkler
service will charge $50 to $150, depending on the size of the system.
MULCH LEAVES WHEN YOU MOW.
Mow your leaves instead of raking them, studies at the University of
Michigan and Purdue say. The trick is to cut the leaves, while dry,
into dime-sized pieces that will fall among the grass blades, where
they will decompose and nourish your lawn over the winter. Use your
lawn mower without its bag, and optionally swap the cutting blade for
a mulching blade (about $15 to $25). The process may take several
passes.

PREPARE TO STOW YOUR MOWER.

If the mower sits through the winter, fuel remaining in its engine will
decompose, "varnishing" the carburetor and causing difficulty when
you try to start the engine in the spring. John Deere offers these
preventive steps: If you've added stabilizer to your fuel to keep it fresh
longer, then fill the gas tank to the top with more stabilized fuel and
run the engine briefly to allow it to circulate. If not, wait until the tank
is nearly empty from use and run the engine (outdoors) to use up the
remaining fuel. Check your mower's manual for other cold-weather
storage steps.
PRUNE TREES OR SHRUBS IN LATE WINTER!
You may be tempted to get out the pruning shears after the leaves
fall, when you can first see the underlying structure of the plant. But
horticulturalists advise waiting to prune until late winter for most
plants, when they've been long dormant and just before spring
growth begins. To get advice specific to your plants and region,
consult master gardeners at local nurseries or horticulturalists. One
exception: You may need to hire an arborist to remove deadfall or trim
limbs close to your home or power lines that could cause problems in
a winter storm.

complete instructions for

testing and maintenance,
check your owners manual.
Most sump pumps last about
ten years, according to Chubb
Personal Insurance.
CALL A CHIMNEY

SWEEP.
Before you burn the Yule log, make sure your fireplace (or any heating
appliance burning gas, oil, wood or coal), chimney and vents are
clean and in good repair. That will prevent chimney fires and prevent
carbon monoxide from creeping into your home. You can expect to
pay $50 to $90 for an inspection to see if you need a cleaning, and
$100 to $300 for the cleaning.
RESTOCK WINTER ESSENTIALS.
Dont wait for the first winter storm to restock cold-weather
essentials, such as sand, salt, or ice melt. Before the first snowfall,
break out the shovels and tune up the snow blower.

TEST YOUR SUMP PUMP.

Slowly pour several gallons of water into the sump pit to see whether
the pump turns on. You should do this every few months, but
especially after a long dry season or before a rainy one. For more

A Sumptuous
Feast of Sound

Article by Hope Hahn Photography by Robert Rosen

Writer Ruth Reichl once said, Pull up a chair. Take a taste. Come
join us. Life is so endlessly delicious. Music and the arts can offer a
special dessert to the meal of life.

The mission of the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra is to

enrich, engage, and educate
through the power and performance
of live music. For over 65 years,
the CWSO has been providing rich
shared cultural experiences. The
history that CWSO holds continues
to be a relevant and valued part
of the lives of Central Wisconsin
residents today and for future
generations. In January of 2015 the
orchestra moved its offices into the
Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum.
A gift of Dr. David L. Smith to
the City of Stevens Points Parks
and Recreation Department, the
museum is managed by the CWSO and serves as an important venue
for rotating art exhibits, community meetings, jazz concerts, and
many other functions.
The CWSOs scope expands far beyond the concert hall:
Supporting the faculty and students of UWSP by offering a
professional large ensemble experience, showcasing the artistry
of faculty in concerto performances, and offering advanced
performance opportunities to the youth.
Providing a professional performance experience for regional
musicians.
Commissioning new orchestral works of established and
emerging composers.
Partnering with local arts and education organizations.
Presenting adventurous programing with deep community
engagement.
Showcasing world-renowned and emerging artists.
There are currently 80 musicians comprising the CWSO. Each is a
paid professional and many are current or past teachers or professors
in their music specialty.
The CWSO is the only regional professional orchestra east of the
Chippewa Valley, west of the Fox Valley and north of Madison.
Providing all of Central Wisconsin with a musical experience they

some of the CWSO members travel from as far away as Gleason and

A recent development at the CWSO is the organization of the Central
Wisconsin Jazz Ensemble. Performing two concerts each year, the
Central Wisconsin Jazz Ensemble offers central Wisconsin residents

The CWSO also works with local schools and universities to offer
opportunities in music that would not be available otherwise. These
opportunities include:
The biennial Betty Jo Frost Jenkins Young Artists Concerto

performance opportunity with CWSO.
Provides four $1000 competitive scholarships to university string

and ears of a child.
Offers outreach experiences to schools by CWSO musicians.

Reach out to schools, art galleries, and health care facilities
through CWSO guest artists.
Offer special family pricing for students who are studying music
privately.
Provides internships in partnership with the College of Fine Arts
& Communication.
Offers presentations for community organizations such as
UWSPS LIFE program and other regional groups.
The theme for the season is A Sumptuous Feast of Sound, and each
concerts theme is inspired by food. While talking to Ann Huntoon,
Executive Director of the CWSO she stated to me, Music is food for
the soul.
The concerts season, under the direction of Dr. Patrick Miles,
professor emeritus of UW-Stevens Points Department of Music,
opens on October 8 & 9 with Hector Berliozs Roman Carnival
Overture. The featured guest artist of Entre Nous is David Taylor,
Associate Concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
performing Beethovens Violin Concerto in D major. The second half

of the program is a performance of Paul Hindemiths Symphony:

Mathis der Maler. Special guest Lori Skelton, host of Wisconsin Public
Radios Afternoon Classics will be providing in-depth introductions to
all of the concert works.
Get ready to lift your spirits just in time for Christmas with Heavenly
Banquet on December 3 and 4. The program includes Handels
beloved Messiah featuring soloists Susan Bender, soprano; Holly Janz,
mezzo-soprano; Dennis Willhoit, tenor; Sam Handley, baritone, and
the combined voices of the UWSP Concert Choir and Choral Union
prepared by Lucinda Thayer.
Get your imagination ready for some Hollywood and block busters
just in time for the Academy Awards, with Magic, Mystery, and
More! on February 25 and 26. Featuring Dr. Lawrence Leviton, CWSO
co-principal cellist and music in film expert. Leviton will also perform
a world premiere composed just for him by Charlie Barnett of Chaise
Lounge fame.
A Notable Feast on April 22 and 23 brings the empowering effects
of artist Dr. Stijn DeCock, who will be performing Tchaikovskys Piano
concerto No.1. The 68th season of the orchestra concludes with
Beethovens Third Symphony Eroica.
Concert tickets are $12 for students with I.D., $22 (for Seniors 65+)
and $27 (adults). Tickets are available online, at the CWSO office
which is located in the Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum at 800 Main
Street, at the door, or by calling: 715-345-7726.

22. Ann stated, This is

a great way for kids to
connect with classical
music and perhaps add a
string instrument to their
future music studies. The
biennial Dorothy Vetter
Memorial Education
Concerts are an important
component of the symphonys education and outreach program.
The CWSO is just finishing its first major funding campaign in over four
decades. The Grand Campaign was established following the purchase
of the CWSOs concert grand piano, installed in October of 2014. The
campaign has a funding goal of $650,000, which includes a $500,000
endowment, ensuring that the music will continue for years to come.
The Grand Campaign has made it possible for the CWSO to purchase
patron management software, enabling the sale of tickets in-house.
The CWSO is happy to announce its third annual So You Think You
Can Conduct contest. Four to five local celebrity contestants compete
to raise funds for the CWSO in order to have the opportunity to
conduct a music piece at the February 2017 concerts. The campaign
is off and running with two high-profile candidates, Alderman David
Shorr and Mayor Mike Wiza. Two additional contestants are currently
being sought.

The concerts take place in Sentrys Theater @1800, located at: 1800
North Point Ave. Saturday performances are at 7:30 P.M, and Sunday
performances are at 4:00 P.M.

Come and enjoy the great concert music from the series A Sumptuous
Feast of Sound. Remember, music, like food, must be savored in the
moment for its beauty lies in the memory of it." So, sit back, relax, and
listen to the music from the artists who have a heart for the arts, but
most of all enjoy the 68th Season!

An abbreviated version of the Magic, Mystery, and More! concert

will be presented to over 1300 fourth grader students on February

Chance Meeting Leads to Friendship,

Shared Adventure & Book Collaboration
Article by Kris Rude-Clark - Photography by Kris Rude-Clark & Sylvia Oberle

ore than 10 years ago, Sylvia Oberle and Kris Rued-Clark met
through a poetry group and discovered they shared many
mutual interests. At that point, Sylvia had walked about 300
miles of Wisconsins Ice Age Trail, and Kris began walking with her.
As section hikers, they chose to complete the trail a segment at a
time.
Wisconsins Ice Age Trail is a 1,200-mile footpath that traverses the
state from St. Croix Falls in the west to Sturgeon Bay in the east. One
of 11 National Scenic Trails, it traces the edges of the final glaciation in
Wisconsin more than 12,000 years ago.
Initially, Sylvias husband, Gene, acted as their driver and coach. After
the women had been walking together for a few years, Gene suffered
a heart attack. Due to diabetes complications, he endured dialysis
three times each week, yet he continued to drive them. Following a
year of dialysis, Genes health failed, and he passed away. Less than a
month later, Sylvia lost their daughter Marie to breast cancer.
Shortly before her passing, Marie told Sylvia, You have to live for
me now, Mother. Finish the trail for Daddy and me. At that point,
Sylvia had finished 780 miles of the trail. Walking the trail gave Sylvia
a reason to keep going, and she completed her final two segments,
Holy Hill and Pike Lake, on October 21, 2011.
Once Sylvia had finished the trail, she wanted to write a book,
including some of the many photographs shed taken on the trail and
encouraged Kris to partner
with her. A longtime
educator, Sylvia intended
that the book inform more
people about this resource
and to encourage others,
especially families, to walk
the trail. Cody Popp, a
Waupaca graphic designer,
designed the book and
Worzalla Publishing of
Stevens Point printed the
book.
The result, Adventures
on Wisconsins Ice Age
Trail, Day Hikes, Weekend
Jaunts, and Family
Vacations, combines
elements of a guide book
with personal essays
detailing the authors
adventures on the
trail, and is illustrated
throughout with full-color
photographs.

Invited to participate as a guest of the Hidden Studios TourArt

along the Ice Age Trail, Kris signed copies of the book at the studiohome of jewelry artist Brenda Gingles. The art tour was held on
September 30-October 2. Eight studios were featured on the tour,
and each studio hosted one to two guest artists. Visitors will be
welcomed into artists studios, with the opportunity to see them
demonstrating or explaining their processes.
The tour included paintings, drawings, prints, photography, jewelry,
glass, ceramics, hand forged home furnishings, sculptural lighting,
wood furniture and accessories, raku pottery, and leather purses. For
a list of the participating artists, area lodging and restaurants, go to
www.HiddenStudiosArtTour.com
Concurrent events include the annual Hike-A-Thon, hosted by the
Portage and Waupaca County chapters of the Ice Age Trail Alliance,
held October 1. This years Hike-A-Thon starts at Hartman Creek
State Park, Waupaca. The photography exhibit, The Barns of Portage
County, is at the Rising Star Mill in Nelsonville.
