Earn a Certificate in Sports Communications

The Southern Utah University Certificate in Sports

Communication responds to the need for qualified

communication professionals in the sports industry.
Created in conjunction with the SUU Athletics
Department, this certificate familiarizes students with
diverse aspects of sports communication, including: sports
journalism, promotion and publicity, production and
performance, and sports media relations.

Students are prepared for management positions in

professional, collegiate and amateur sports; jobs in sports

media including radio and television stations and networks,
print publications, and Internet sports; and as sports
information and communication specialists.

A major economic and global cultural phenomenon, the

sports industry today is much more than the competition

of athletes. No other program in the region embraces
the power of journalism, broadcasting, public relations,
advertising, entertainment, and the strengths of the
interactive online community.

This program examines sports as a social, cultural and

communicative force. Through classroom study, research,

and experential learning opportunities, students learn what
it means to be a professional in the sports industry.

Certificate curriculum includes courses such as:

- COMM 2507
Writing & Reporting for Sports Media
- COMM 4507
Sports Administration & Management
- HIST 3200
Sports in American History
- SOC 3270
Sociology of Sports
Courses will routinely feature guest lecturers
including: athletic directors, sports reporters,
and prominent industry professionals.
Opportunities will be provided for students
to complete requirements for EDGE projects
that will be mutually beneficial for them, the
univeristy, and the Cedar City community.
