LOS ANGELESThe family of Mauricio Barron, the 27 year-old who was shot and
killed by CHP Officers on the 5-Freeway on Monday, October 10, 2016, has hired the
firm of Geragos & Geragos, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer
involved shooting death of Mauricio.
On the morning of October 10, 2016, Mauricio was being driven by his friend to
Loma Linda Hospital as a precautionary measure after he exhibited mental health
issues over the weekend. Mauricio had no known prior history of mental issues or
criminal record. On the way to the hospital, an argument ensued, and Mauricios
friend exited the vehicle and Mauricio drove away. Upon learning this from his
friend, Mauricios family immediately notified the Irvine Police Department and the
Riverside Police Department, and informed them of Mauricios mental health
condition.
Mauricios family did not hear back from the police and did not receive updates after
calling in the morning. Mauricios family first learned that Mauricio was shot and
killed by a CHP Officer from news accounts. The police still continue to update the
media before Mauricios family which has caused significant pain to the family.
From our initial investigation, it appears that Mauricio was unarmed with his hands in
the air when he was shot and killed and at a significant distance away from the CHP
Officers. We believe there is a video, and perhaps multiple videos, of the incident and
ask that anyone who has such video of the shooting or who witnessed the shooting to
call our firm at 213.625.3900 or email Geragos@Geragos.Com.
Mauricio is remembered by his family and loved ones as a fun, high-spirited and
motivated young man. He loved music and was an accomplished tap dancer. Mauricio
worked as a union industrial painter and journeyman prior to his death.
Geragos & Geragos Civil Rights Attorney Ben Meiselas has said: We are
conducting a thorough investigation into the officer involved shooting death of
Mauricio Barron and will leave no stone unturned. Sadly, we continue to see a local
and national crisis of police confronting mental illness with lethal force instead of deescalation protocols. We ask that anyone who witnessed this tragic shooting death to
contact our law firm immediately.
