The Myth of Pandoras Box

In ancient Greece there were two brothers named Epimetheus and Prometheus. They upset the
gods and annoyed the most powerful of all Gods, Zeus, in particular. This was not the first time
humans had upset Zeus, and once before, as punishment, he had taken from humans the ability to
make fire. This meant they could no longer cook their meat and could not keep themselves
warm.
However, Prometheus was clever and he knew that, on the Isle of Lemnos, lived Hephaestos, the
blacksmith. He had a fire burning to keep his forge hot. Prometheus travelled to Lemnos and
stole fire from the blacksmith. Zeus was furious and decided that humans had to be punished
once and for all for their lack of respect.
Zeus came up with a very cunning plan to punish the two brothers. With the help of Hephaestos,
he created a woman from clay. The goddess Athene then breathed life into the clay, Aphrodite
made her very beautiful and Hermes taught her how to be both charming and deceitful. Zeus
called her Pandora and sent her as a gift to Epimetheus.
His brother Prometheus had warned him not to accept any gifts from the gods but Epimetheus
was completely charmed by the woman and thought Pandora was so beautiful that she could
never cause any harm, so he agreed to marry her.
Zeus, pleased that his trap was working, gave Pandora a wedding gift of a beautiful box. There
was one very, very important condition however, that she must never opened the box. Pandora
was very curious about the contents of the box but she had promised that she would never open
it.
All she could think about was; what could be in the box? She could not understand why someone
would send her a box if she could not see what was in it. It seemed to make no sense at all to her
and she could think of nothing else but of opening the box and unlocking its secrets. This was
just what Zeus had planned.
Finally, Pandora could stand it no longer. When she knew Epimetheus was out of sight, she crept
up to the box, took the huge key off the high shelf, fitted it carefully into the lock and turned it.
But, at the last moment, she felt a pang of guilt, imagined how angry her husband would be and
quickly locked the box again without opening the lid and put the key back where she had found
it. Three more times she did this until, at last, she knew she had to look inside or she would go
completely mad!
She took the key, slid it into the lock and turned it. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes and
slowly lifted the lid of the box. She opened her eyes and looked into the box, expecting to see
fine silks, gowns or gold bracelets and necklaces or even piles of gold coins.
But there was no gleam of gold or treasure. There were no shining bracelets and not one
beautiful dress! The look of excitement on her face quickly turned to one of disappointment and

then horror. For Zeus had packed the box full of all the terrible evils he could think of. Out of the
box poured disease and poverty. Out came misery, out came death, out came sadness - all shaped
like tiny buzzing moths.
The creatures stung Pandora over and over again and she slammed the lid shut. Epimetheus ran
into the room to see why she was crying in pain. Pandora could still hear a voice calling to her
from the box, pleading with her to be let out. Epimetheus agreed that nothing inside the box
could be worse than the horrors that had already been released, so they opened the lid once more.
All that remained in the box was Hope. It fluttered from the box like a beautiful dragonfly,
touching the wounds created by the evil creatures, and healing them. Even though Pandora had
released pain and suffering upon the world, she had also allowed Hope to follow them.

Narrative: Fairytale
The Three Little Pigs
Once upon a time there were three little pigs. One pig built a house of straw while the second pig built
his house with sticks. They built their houses very quickly and then sang and danced all day because
they were lazy. The third little pig worked hard all day and built his house with bricks.
A big bad wolf saw the two little pigs while they danced and played and thought, What juicy tender
meals they will make! He chased the two pigs and they ran and hid in their houses. The big bad wolf
went to the first house and huffed and puffed and blew the house down in minutes. The frightened
little pig ran to the second pigs house that was made of sticks. The big bad wolf now came to this
house and huffed and puffed and blew the house down in hardly any time. Now, the two little pigs
were terrified and ran to the third pigs house that was made of bricks.
The big bad wolf tried to huff and puff and blow the house down, but he could not. He kept trying for
hours but the house was very strong and the little pigs were safe inside. He tried to enter through the
chimney but the third little pig boiled a big pot of water and kept it below the chimney. The wolf fell
into it and died.
The two little pigs now felt sorry for having been so lazy. They too built their houses with bricks and
lived happily ever after.

Poetry: Ode
To Licinius
by: Horace

You'll do better, Licinius, not to spend your life

Venturing too far out on the dangerous waters,
Or else, for fear of storms, staying too close in
To the dangerous rocky shoreline. That man does best
Who chooses the middle way, so he doesn't end up
Living under a roof that's going to ruin
Or in some gorgeous mansion everyone envies.
The tallest pine shakes most in a wind storm;
The loftiest tower falls down with the loudest crash;
The lightning bolt heads straight for the mountain top.
Always expect reversals; be hopeful in trouble,
Be worried when things go well. That's how it is
For the man whose heart is ready for anything.
It's true that Jupiter brings on the hard winters;
It's also true that Jupiter takes them away.
If things are bad right now, they won't always be.
Apollo isn't always drawing his bow;
There are times when he takes up his lyre and plays,
And awakens the music sleeping upon the strings.
Be resolute when things are going against you,
But shorten sail when the fair wind blows too strong.

Reflection

The ode To Licinius talks about how we should be humble and stay in the middle. We shouldt be
too high for others might envy us. We shouldnt be too high because those who are too high
have the greatest downfall. Just like in the story of Daedalus and his son Icarus, Icarus flew too
high with his mindset that he could reach the sun even though his father warned him not to fly
high, he still did. This caused Icarus his downfall. We also shouldnt be too low for us to suffer.
We should lift ourselves up from suffering. We should position ourselves in the middle and be
humble. People should be thankful for what they have and be content with it.

O Captain! My Captain!
By: Walt Whitman

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,

The ship has weatherd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise upfor you the flag is flungfor you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbond wreathsfor you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
Youve fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchord safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

Reflection
O Captain! My Captain! Depicts a story of a battleship coming home from war. Sadly, the
captain has died in battle and lies cold and dead on the deck of the ship. In a deeper
understanding to the poem, what it is trying to tell us is that even though we would be victorious,
we would always lose some of our best people on the way. Like in the story, the ship may won
the war but the captain didnt make it. In our life, we may have struggles and we can overcome
those struggles but sadly, we lose something in the end. To gain something, you have to lose
something.

Hamlet
by: William Shakespeare

HAMLET: To be, or not to be--that is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep-No more--and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to. 'Tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep-To sleep--perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause. There's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
Th' oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th' unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country, from whose bourn

No traveller returns, puzzles the will,

And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprise of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action. -- Soft you now,
The fair Ophelia! -- Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remembered.

Summary
On a dark winter night, a ghost walks the ramparts of Elsinore Castle in Denmark. Discovered
first by a pair of watchmen, then by the scholar Horatio, the ghost resembles the recently
deceased King Hamlet, whose brother Claudius has inherited the throne and married the kings
widow, Queen Gertrude. When Horatio and the watchmen bring Prince Hamlet, the son of
Gertrude and the dead king, to see the ghost, it speaks to him, declaring ominously that it is
indeed his fathers spirit, and that he was murdered by none other than Claudius. Ordering
Hamlet to seek revenge on the man who usurped his throne and married his wife, the ghost
disappears with the dawn.Prince Hamlet devotes himself to avenging his fathers death, but,
because he is contemplative and thoughtful by nature, he delays, entering into a deep melancholy
and even apparent madness. Claudius and Gertrude worry about the princes erratic behavior and
attempt to discover its cause. They employ a pair of Hamlets friends, Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern, to watch him. When Polonius, the pompous Lord Chamberlain, suggests that
Hamlet may be mad with love for his daughter, Ophelia, Claudius agrees to spy on Hamlet in
conversation with the girl. But though Hamlet certainly seems mad, he does not seem to love
Ophelia: he orders her to enter a nunnery and declares that he wishes to ban marriages.A group
of traveling actors comes to Elsinore, and Hamlet seizes upon an idea to test his uncles guilt. He
will have the players perform a scene closely resembling the sequence by which Hamlet
imagines his uncle to have murdered his father, so that if Claudius is guilty, he will surely react.
When the moment of the murder arrives in the theater, Claudius leaps up and leaves the room.
Hamlet and Horatio agree that this proves his guilt. Hamlet goes to kill Claudius but finds him
praying. Since he believes that killing Claudius while in prayer would send Claudiuss soul to
heaven, Hamlet considers that it would be an inadequate revenge and decides to wait. Claudius,
now frightened of Hamlets madness and fearing for his own safety, orders that Hamlet be sent to
England at once.Hamlet goes to confront his mother, in whose bedchamber Polonius has hidden
behind a tapestry. Hearing a noise from behind the tapestry, Hamlet believes the king is hiding

there. He draws his sword and stabs through the fabric, killing Polonius. For this crime, he is
immediately dispatched to England with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. However, Claudiuss
plan for Hamlet includes more than banishment, as he has given Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
sealed orders for the King of England demanding that Hamlet be put to death. In the aftermath of
her fathers death, Ophelia goes mad with grief and drowns in the river. Poloniuss son, Laertes,
who has been staying in France, returns to Denmark in a rage. Claudius convinces him that
Hamlet is to blame for his fathers and sisters deaths. When Horatio and the king receive letters
from Hamlet indicating that the prince has returned to Denmark after pirates attacked his ship en
route to England, Claudius concocts a plan to use Laertes desire for revenge to secure Hamlets
death. Laertes will fence with Hamlet in innocent sport, but Claudius will poison Laertes blade
so that if he draws blood, Hamlet will die. As a backup plan, the king decides to poison a goblet,
which he will give Hamlet to drink should Hamlet score the first or second hits of the match.
Hamlet returns to the vicinity of Elsinore just as Ophelias funeral is taking place. Stricken with
grief, he attacks Laertes and declares that he had in fact always loved Ophelia. Back at the castle,
he tells Horatio that he believes one must be prepared to die, since death can come at any
moment. A foolish courtier named Osric arrives on Claudiuss orders to arrange the fencing
match between Hamlet and Laertes. The sword-fighting begins. Hamlet scores the first hit, but
declines to drink from the kings proffered goblet. Instead, Gertrude takes a drink from it and is
swiftly killed by the poison. Laertes succeeds in wounding Hamlet, though Hamlet does not die
of the poison immediately. First, Laertes is cut by his own swords blade, and, after revealing to
Hamlet that Claudius is responsible for the queens death, he dies from the blades poison.
Hamlet then stabs Claudius through with the poisoned sword and forces him to drink down the
rest of the poisoned wine. Claudius dies, and Hamlet dies immediately after achieving his
revenge. At this moment, a Norwegian prince named Fortinbras, who has led an army to
Denmark and attacked Poland earlier in the play, enters with ambassadors from England, who
report that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. Fortinbras is stunned by the gruesome sight
of the entire royal family lying sprawled on the floor dead. He moves to take power of the
kingdom. Horatio, fulfilling Hamlets last request, tells him Hamlets tragic story. Fortinbras
orders that Hamlet be carried away in a manner befitting a fallen soldier.

Midsummer Nights Dream
By: William Shakespeare

Titania: These are the forgeries of jealousy:

And never, since the middle summer's spring,
Met we on hill, in dale, forest or mead,
By paved fountain or by rushy brook,
Or in the beached margent of the sea,
To dance our ringlets to the whistling wind,
But with thy brawls thou hast disturb'd our sport.
Therefore the winds, piping to us in vain,
As in revenge, have suck'd up from the sea
Contagious fogs; which falling in the land
Have every pelting river made so proud
That they have overborne their continents:
The ox hath therefore stretch'd his yoke in vain,
The ploughman lost his sweat, and the green corn
Hath rotted ere his youth attain'd a beard;
The fold stands empty in the drowned field,
And crows are fatted with the murrion flock;

The nine men's morris is fill'd up with mud,

And the quaint mazes in the wanton green
For lack of tread are undistinguishable:
The human mortals want their winter here;
No night is now with hymn or carol blest:
Therefore the moon, the governess of floods,
Pale in her anger, washes all the air,
The seasons alter: hoary-headed frosts
Far in the fresh lap of the crimson rose,
And on old Hiems' thin and icy crown
An odorous chaplet of sweet summer buds
Is, as in mockery, set: the spring, the summer,
The childing autumn, angry winter, change
Their wonted liveries, and the mazed world,
By their increase, now knows not which is which:
And this same progeny of evils comes
From our debate, from our dissension;
We are their parents and original.

Summary
A Midsummer Night's Dream takes place in Athens. Theseus, the Duke of Athens, is planning
his marriage with Hippolyta, and as a result he is a planning a large festival. Egeus enters,
followed by his daughter Hermia, her beloved Lysander, and her suitor Demetrius. Egeus tells
Theseus that Hermia refuses to marry Demetrius, wanting instead to marry Lysander. He asks for
the right to punish Hermia with death if she refuses to obey. Theseus agrees that Hermia's duty is
to obey her father, and threatens her with either entering a nunnery or marrying the man her
father chooses. Lysander protests, but is overruled by the law. He and Hermia than decide to flee
by night into the woods surrounding Athens, where they can escape the law and get married.
They tell their plan to Helena, a girl who is madly in love with Demetrius. Hoping to gain favor
with Demetrius, Helena decides to tell him about the plan. Some local artisans and workmen
have decided to perform a play for Theseus as a way to celebrate his wedding. They choose
Pyramus and Thisbe for their play, and meet to assign the roles. Nick Bottomgets the role of
Pyramus, and Flute takes the part of Thisbe. They agree to meet the next night in the woods to
rehearse the play.Robin Goodfellow, a puck, meets a fairy who serves Queen Titania. He tells the
fairy that his King Oberon is in the woods, and that Titania should avoid Oberon because they
will quarrel again. However, Titania and Oberon soon arrive and begin arguing about a young
boy Titania has stolen and is caring for. Oberon demands that she give him the boy, but she
refuses. Oberon decides to play a trick on Titania and put some pansy juice on her eyes. The
magical juice will make her fall in love with first person she sees upon waking up. Soon after

Puck is sent away to fetch the juice, Oberon overhears Demetrius and Helena in the woods.
Demetrius deserts Helena in the forest, leaving her alone. Oberon decides that he will change this
situation, and commands Robin to put the juice onto Demetrius's eyes when he is sleeping. He
then finds Titania and drops the juice onto her eyelids. Robin goes to find Demetrius, but instead
comes across Lysander and accidentally uses the juice on him. By accident Helena comes across
Lysander and wakes him up. He immediately falls in love with her and starts to chase her
through the woods. Together they arrive where Oberon is watching, and he realizes the mistake.
Oberon then puts the pansy juice onto Demetrius's eyelids, who upon waking up also falls in love
with Helena. She thinks that the two men are trying to torment her for being in love with
Demetrius, and becomes furious at their protestations of love. The workmen arrive in the woods
and start to practice their play. They constantly ruin the lines of the play and mispronounce the
words. Out of fear of censorship, they decide to make the play less realistic. Therefore the lion is
supposed to announce that he is not a lion, but only a common man. Bottom also feels obliged to
tell the audience that he is not really going to die, but will only pretend to do so. Puck, watching
this silly scene, catches Bottom alone and puts an asses head on him. When Bottom returns to his
troupe, they run away out of fear. Bottom then comes across Titania, and succeeds in waking her
up. She falls in love with him due to the juice on her eyes, and takes him with her.Lysander and
Demetrius prepare to fight one another for Helena. Puck intervenes and leads them through the
woods in circles until they collapse onto the ground in exhaustion. He then brings the two
women to same area and puts them to sleep as well. Oberon finds Titania and releases her from
the spell. He then tells the audience that Bottom will think is all a dream when he wakes up. He
further releases Lysander from the spell. Theseus arrives with a hunting party and finds the
lovers stretched out on the ground. He orders the hunting horns blown in order to wake them
up.The lovers explain why they are in the woods, at which point Egeus demands that he be
allowed to exercise the law on Hermia. However, Demetrius intervenes and tells them that he no
longer loves Hermia, but rather only loves Helena. Theseus decides to overbear Egeus and let the
lovers get married that day with him. Together they return to Athens. Bottom wakes up and
thinks that he has dreamed the entire episode. He swiftly returns to Athens where he meets his
friends. Together they head over to Theseus's palace. Theseus looks over the list of possible
entertainment for that evening and settles on the play of Pyramus and Thisbe. Bottom and the
rest of his company perform the play, after which everyone retires to bed. Puck arrives and starts
to sweep the house clean. Oberon and Titania briefly bless the couples and their future children.
After they leave Puck asks the audience to forgive the actors is they were offended. He then tells
the audience that if anyone disliked the play, they should imagine that it was only a dream.

Why we are shallow
By: F Sionil Jose

I was visited by an old Asian friend who lived here 10 years ago. I was floored by his observation that
though we have lots of talented people, as a whole, we continue to be shallow.Recently, I was seated
beside former Senator Letty Shahani, PhD in Comparative Literature from the Sorbonne, watching a
medley of Asian dances. The stately and classical Japanese number with stylized movements which
perhaps took years to master elicited what seemed to me grudging applause. Then, the
Filipino tinikling which any one can learn in 10 minutes; after all that energetic jumping, an almost
standing ovation. Letty turned to me and asked, Why are we so shallow? Yes, indeed, and for how
long? This is a question which I have asked myself, which I hope all of us should ask ourselves every so
often. Once we have answered it, then we will move on to a more elevated sensibility. And with this
sensibility, we will then be able to deny the highest positions in government to those nincompoops who
have nothing going for them except popularity, what an irresponsible and equally shallow media had
created. As my foreign friend said, there is nothing to read in our major papers. Again, why are we
shallow? There are so many reasons. One lies in our educational system which has diminished not just
scholarship but excellence. There is less emphasis now on the humanities, in the study of the classics
which enables us to have a broader grasp of our past and the philosophies of this past. I envy those
Hindus and Buddhists who have in their religion philosophy and ancestor worship which build in the

believer a continuity with the past, and that most important ingredient in the building of a nation
memory. Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: Sure, our Christian faith, too,
has a philosophical tradition, particularly if we connect it to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Remember,
the first Bible was in Greek. But Greek, Latin and the classics in these languages are no longer taught in
our schools the way these are still studied in many universities in Europe. We are shallow because we
are mayabang, ego driven, and do not have the humility to understand that we are only human, much too
human to mistake knowledge for wisdom. We can see this yabang in some of our public commentators,
particularly on TV the know-it-alls who think that because they have so much knowledge available
now on the Web at the click of a button they can answer every question posed to them. What they do
not realize is that knowledge is not wisdom. Until they recognize that important if sometimes awful
difference, they will continue to bluster their way to the top at our expense because we, the people, will
then have to suffer their arrogance and ignorance. We are shallow because with this arrogance, we accept
positions far beyond our competence. Because there is no critical tradition in this country a tradition
which will easily separate the chaff from the grain, we cannot recognize fakery from the real goods. That
outstanding scholar, Wilfredo Villacorta, is a rare bird indeed; when offered a high position in
government, he refused it because he knew he was not qualified for the job. Any
other mayabang academic would have grabbed it although he knows he cant handle it. And so it happens
always the nitwits who hold such high positions stubbornly hold on to their posts, bamboozling
their subordinates who may be brighter than them for that is the only way those who are inferior feel they
can have respect. On the other hand, the intelligent person will be aware of his shortcomings. He does not
hesitate to ask the opinion of those who know more than him on particular subjects. If he is a government
hierarch, he will surround himself with advisers who he knows can supply him with guidance and
background possessing as they do more knowledge, experience and wisdom than him. Such an official is
bound to commit fewer mistakes because he knows himself. We are shallow because we lack this most
important knowledge who we are and the limits to what we can do. We also lack the perception, and
the courage, for instance, to deny these religious quacks and the thousands who listen and believe in
them. Sure, religion is the opium of the masses as Marx said. So then, how can we prevent the masa from
taking this poison without recognizing their right to make fools of themselves? Again, shallowness
because the good people are silent. Ubi boni tacent, malum prosperat. Where good men are silent, evil
prospers. This shallowness is the impediment to prosperity, to justice, and men of goodwill should
emphasize this, take risks even in doing so. As the late Salvador P. Lopez said, It is better to be silenced
than to be silent. We are shallow because our media are so horribly shallow. Every morning, I peruse the
papers and there is so little to read in them. It is the same with radio all that noise, that artifice. I turn
on the TV on prime time and what do I get? Five juvenile commentators gushing over the amors of movie
stars, who is shacking up with whom. One of the blabbering panelists I distinctly remember was caught
cheating some years back at some movie award. How could she still be on TV after that moral destruct?
And the telenovelas, how utterly asinine, bizarre, foolish, insipid moronic and mephitic they are! And
there are so many talented writers in our vernaculars and in English as the Palanca Awards show every
year why arent they harnessed for TV? Those TV moguls have a stock answer the ratings of these

shows are very high. Popularity not quality is their final arbiter. They give our people garbage and they
are now giving it back to all of us in kind! So I must not be blamed if, most of the time, I turn on BBC.
Aljazeera, rather than the local TV channels. It is such a pleasure to read The New York Times, theSan
Jose Mercury News, the Washington Post, to listen to Fresh Air on US public radio and public TV
where my ever-continuing thirst for knowledge (and good entertainment) is quenched. We are shallow
because we dont read. I go to the hospital on occasion the long corridor is filled with people staring
into the cosmos. It is only I who have brought a book or a magazine. In Japanese cities, in Korea in the
buses and trains, young and old are reading, or if they are not holding books and magazines, they are
glued to their iPhones where so much information is now available. In these countries and in Western
cities, the bookshops are still full, but not so much anymore because the new communications
technologies are now available to their masa. How I wish my tiny bookshop or any Filipino bookshop for
that matter would be filled with people. Ill make an exception here: BookSale branches are always full
because their books are very cheap. But I would still ask: what kind of books do Filipinos buy? We are
shallow because we have become enslaved by gross materialism, the glitter of gold and its equivalents,
for which reason we think that only the material goods of this earth can satisfy us and we must therefore
grab as much as can while we are able. Enjoy all these baubles that we have accumulated; sure, it is
pleasurable to possess such artifacts that make living trouble free. And that old anodyne: Man does not
live by bread alone, who are the thinking and stubborn few who believe in it? I hope that those who read
this piece still do.

Climate Change
by Ralitza Tabakova

Nowadays climate change is the biggest problem of the human being. It is already happening and
represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet.
The warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in
global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean
sea level. The Earths average surface temperature has risen by 0.76 C since 1850. Most of the warming
that has occurred over the last 50 years is very likely to have been caused by human activities. In its
Fourth Assessment Report projects that, without further action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the
global average surface temperature is likely to rise by a further 1.8-4.0C this century, and by up to 6.4C
in the worst case scenario. Even the lower end of this range would take the temperature increase since
pre-industrial times above 2C the threshold beyond which irreversible and possibly catastrophic
changes
become
far
more
likely.
The climate can affect every person and our health directly through increases in temperature. Such
increases may lead to more There can be extreme floods and droughts, urricanes.Nowadays there are so
many factories that exhale really destructive substances and pollute the air. We all know very well that air
is something we cant live without. When we breathe the polluted air, we can get seriously ill. Groundlevel ozone can damage lung tissue, and is especially harmful for those with asthma and other chronic
lung diseases. Sunlight and high temperatures, combined with other pollutants such as nitrogen oxides
and volatile organic compounds, can cause the ground-level ozone to increase. We cannot escape from the
polluted air-its everywhere, even in our homes and we are breathing it non-stop. This can cause cancer

and other serious diseases.Another huge problem is that the sea levels are rising worldwide. Also the
expansion of ocean water is caused by warmer ocean temperatures.. Mountain glaciers and small ice caps
are melting as well as Greenlands Ice Sheet and the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The temperature is rising which
means that ice is melting faster and faster. However, these are not the only problems. Another issue are the
greenhouse gasses. They are gasses which trap heat in the atmosphere. Some greenhouse gases such as
carbon dioxide occur naturally by natural processes and other are created and emitted solely through
human activities. For example carbon dioxide is entering the atmosphere because of human activities like
burning of fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal). All vehicles exhale too much damaging substances.
People have been trying to reduce them but the problem is still topical and I think we have to do
something like ride a bike not a car to work or school, we should take the shortest route possible, and plan
our drive so that we will not backtrack or travel out of our way.We also may choose a clean-burning fuel,
which reduces ozone-forming pollutants and buy a car that produces fewer emissions or runs using an
alternative fuel. The taxes of cars should be higher and most of the people will prefer to use the public
transport and we will no longer have traffic jams and we will reduce the damaging emissions. As a
conclusion, I think that when it can not do both, The UN should prioritize combating climate change over
reducing poverty. Of course, poverty is a big issue, which needs a solution but have you ever asked
yourself why the poor countries like Bangladesh, Gambia, Zambia are poor and why so many people die?
Its because the climate doesnt allow them to grow food and they cant afford to buy it from other
countries. The climate is a very important thing and if we dont stop the changes soon, more and more
plants and trees are going to die, we wont have enough food and then not only will the third world
countries suffer from hunger but so will the whole world. I think it is better to first stop the changes in
climate and then gradually reduce the hunger in the poor countries. Because if we stop the changes, we
are going to be healthier and everything around us will be cleaner and it will be how it actually should be.
I believe harmony between nature and human beings will return

No Choice Rather Than Pro-Choice
By: Don Williamson

ABORTION is such an ugly, hateful word. It is a subject I try to avoid and my least favorite topic. One
reason for my reluctance to discuss abortion is the fact that men cannot get pregnant or ever truly
understand the pain and trauma of ending a pregnancy. It seems so arrogant and callous for men - who
dominate state and federal governments and judgeships - to make decisions about what women may or
may not do with their bodies and the life that grows inside them.Fathers should care and - in an ideal
world - should have a voice in what happens to the life they have helped create. But the debate that rages
across this nation - most currently and dramatically in Louisiana - is less about fathers and mothers than it
is about politics and the desire to win elections and influence voters. It is also about a tremendous effort by
some well-meaning and some not-so-well-meaning people to control the lives of others.Just the mention
of the word ``abortion'' creates levels of controversy unmatched by most issues. People are willing to
march, picket, intimidate pregnant women, go to jail, and - in some cases - bomb abortion clinics and risk
adult lives to make a statement about unborn fetuses. For many, the question is when life begins, and
whether unborn fetuses are human beings, and whether terminating a pregnancy is murder. Some folks are
surprised at my opposition to abortion, my belief that life begins when it begins - at conception - and that

the taking of any life at any point in that life is murder. In that perfect world mentioned a moment ago,
abortions would be permitted only in the case of rape, incest, or the threat that carrying a pregnancy to
term would jeopardize the life of the mother. But in that perfect world, there also would be no poverty or
hunger or homelessness. There would be no poor women who have to go without prenatal care and no
doctors who refuse to accept these women as patients - as happens right here in Washington state - even
though there is funding to pay for treatment. In that perfect world, there would be no people unwilling to
go to jail to make sure every child is born; no people unwilling to support programs that ensure every
child has adequate food, shelter, clothing, medical attention, and educational opportunities. There would
be no inequities - in that perfect world - based on race or social class, and unfair burdens would not be
placed on the people least able to handle the extra weight. It's hard to imagine anyone in favor of abortion,
and I'm not even sure it's really a matter of choice. It's hard to accept anyone making the choice to use
abortion as a form of birth control in an era when the means exist for anyone to avoid getting pregnant
unless they want to.But that's another area where there seems to be hypocrisy among many in the antiabortion movement. It's often those who holler the loudest in opposition to abortion who also raise their
voices against sex education in the schools and clinics that dispense contraceptives to young people. There
is an almost spiteful sense of morality that says only married couples should make love and everyone else
should just say no or bear the consequences. That sort of thinking is part of the reason for this nation's
astronomical teen-age pregnancy rate and part of the reason children have a better chance of surviving the
first year of their lives in Costa Rica than they do in the United States.Correct information does not
promote promiscuity. It prevents acts of ignorance. Part of the reason the current crisis exists is that many
parents are uncomfortable with discussing sexuality with their children or are themselves ignorant of
pertinent, up-to-date information. Just saying no is the answer to a host of human ills. It works for drugs,
insider trading on Wall Street, crooked savings-and-loans associations, discrimination of all forms,
cheating spouses, greed, insensitivity, and overeating. But humans haven't achieved that level of perfection
in any life area. And it's patently foolish to expect total abstinence from our young - while we bombard
them with the sexually explicit and provide morally bankrupt examples, from presidential advisers to
television evangelists.Yet this is about abortion, and the lunacy of the debate rages while the lifeblood of
the nation is being sucked dry by the selfish and the verindulgent.Abortion would cease to be an issue if
schools taught children what they needed to know and if there were a system of medical care based on
how sick you are and not on how much money you have. If everyone had equal access to housing and
jobs and a decent quality of life, there would be no need to block the entrance to abortion clinics. It's not
as simplistic or silly as being for or against abortion. No one is for the killing of babies. The issue is more
about no-choice than pro-choice.Many people believe they have no choice, no options, no support
systems, no way out in a country that ought to be rich enough, smart enough, and caring enough to
provide real alternatives. We'll talk more later.

Political Madness
By: Peter Wallace
We are about to enter the ludicrous circus that is Philippine politicsnot that Americas seems much
better at the moment. But for our delectation and amusement here come the circus, clowns and all. What I
would like to see is (1) that we have four candidates to choose from. In regard to Grace Poe, I would like
the Supreme Court justices to read the well-conceived columns of that highly respected former Chief

Justice Art Panganiban that demonstrate the compassion and humanity that Pope Francis calls for. I ask
them to reflect very, very carefully on the decisions they reach. Decisions that could decide the future of
this country. And consider the spirit of the Constitution, over technical interpretation. The same, too, for
Rodrigo Duterte. It is abundantly clear to anyone, except for some benighted individuals (what do they
see as their mission in life, I wonder) that Martin Dio intended to run for president. The form says so, it
says as its heading CERTIFICATE OF CANDIDACY FOR PRESIDENT. Nothing could be clearer than
that. The first sentence says I hereby announce my candidacy for the position of MAYOR,
city/municipality of Pasay City, in the May 09, 2016 National and Local Elections
But why is this sentence needed at all when the heading tells you what the form is for? Anyway its a
minor technicality that should be just brushed aside with the intent being clear. I hope the SC justices give
us the choice. Then Id like to see (2) debates. Many debates. Not just one or two, but debates in all major
cities of the country, with mandatory attendance of all four. Five, if you include Miriam Santiago. But the
lady seems too frail to me for the rigors of the campaign trail. Debates where strict rules apply and the
compere is tough and strictno interruption, sticking to time limits, and answering questions directly.
And the questions should be a closely guarded secret so there can be no preparation. With 30 percent of
the time for questions from the audience, which must be brief. For both the candidates and the audience
the compere should have a microphone cut-off switchand use it. No Filipino politeness here. Id be
happy to do it, Id stand for no nonsense. The debates should be required to be shown on all TV channels
at prime time. Cut off the soap operas for once. Lets accept that people are intelligent. Lets give them
every opportunity to know the capabilities of the candidates so they are knowledgeably informed and so
that they can decide with wisdom. Id also like to see (3) a similar thing done for those running for the
Senate, but we might be swamped and the logistics would be challenging. The real solution herean
absolutely impossible dreamis that those running solely on their popularity and public awareness just
quietly withdraw for the sake of the nation. We need well-experienced, knowledgeable people cognizant
of the issues that affect a society. Not simpletons who warm a seat. And, some wont like this, I put
Manny Pacquiao at the top of that list. Manny is a superb boxer, one of the worlds all-time best, but he is
not a legislator. He has no experience relevant to the task. He attended only seven of 70 congress sessions
in 2014, didnt even warm the seat. He should stick to the other very worthwhile things he is doing.
Manny, set the example, withdraw. Next Id like to see (4) strict adherence to Comelec rulesby
everyone. Liberal Party members are not exempt. Already there are oversized posters in non-approved
locations. On the flimsy excuse that its not yet the campaign period. Well, starting Feb. 9 it will be.
Those posters must come down. And spending must be carefully monitored. Namfrel has done a great job
in the past, I urge more to join it. Its time the public, not the politicians, took charge. And heres another
(impossible?) one: (5) lets stop uncovering dirt. I think weve heard enough, had enough of all the
mischief of the candidates. Lets concentrate on evaluating the potential for performance of each of them.
This is where the media can play a positive rolejust refuse to publish dirt. Unless its a fully proven
fact, just ignore it, particularly if it comes from a political source. Restriction of the right to free speech? I
dont think so, just wise discernment of what matters. Then theres (6) I have a list of the issues that will
determine the future of the country that I would like the presidentiables to state their position on.
Unfortunately this column doesnt have the space to list them. But let me mention just one because it
could result in the greatest change to how the Philippines moves ahead. And thats the Constitution. It is
in need of change, it was a reactionary Constitution that was not considered with the thoughtfulness a
constitution requires. Removing the restrictions on foreign participation in the economy is a no-brainer

for everyone except President Aquinoit needs liberalization. On the political side, discussion is needed
on what is the best form of government to suit the Philippines, not just be a US copycat. Unitary or
federal? Presidential or parliamentary? And what form of those. A constitutional commission should be
formed immediately to go into depth and bring to a vote of the people in the 2019 midterm elections. In
the meantime, time for a glass of champagne to celebrate the start of what promises to be a really exciting
year.

Report on Light Water Nuclear Reactors
By: Jeffrey D. Lacruz

Light water reactors are a category of nuclear power reactor in which water is used as both a
coolant and a moderator. There are two types of light water reactors: the pressurized water
reactor and the boiling water reactor. In a pressurized water reactor, steam is produced in a
secondary system. The main components of a pressurized water reactor are the core, control
rods, reactor vessel, steam generators, and pressurizer. The core contains fuel assemblies that
contain fuel rods filled with fuel pellets. The coolant flows through the core where it is heated
at high pressure. Then coolant then flows to a series of steam generators where the collant
flows through the heat exchangers and the steam drum. The pressure is lowered and ateam is
allowed to form which then flows
to a turbogenerator where electricity is produced. The
control rods control the amount of nuclear fission reactions in the core while the pressurizer
maintains the operating pressure in the reactor coolant system. The reactor vessel contains
the fuel elements, the control elements, and the core monitoring instruments.
In a boiling

water reactor, steam is allowed to form directly in the core. The main components of a boiling
water reactor are the core control rods, the core shroud and reactor vessel, the recirculation
system, the steam separators, and the steam dryers. The core of a boiling water reactor is
slightly larger than that of a pressurized water reactor but contains the same elements. The
coolant is circulated through the system by the recirculation system that consists of two loops
containing pumps external to the reactor vessel and jet pumps inside the vessel. After steam in
formed in the reactor vessel, it flows to a series of steam separators where it is separated from
the coolant. The steam then flows through steam dryers where additional drying is done, and
then it proceeds to turn a turbogenerator. The control rods and reactor vessel function in the
same way as in the pressurized water
reactor.
Safety system are designed to prevent
meltdown in both types of light water reactors. The safety systems in a pressurized water
reactor include the residual heat removal system, the emergency core cooling systems, and the
containment building. The residual heat removal system removes decay heat from the primary
coolant system during plant shutdown. The emergency core cooling systems are designed to
deal with loss-of- coolant accidents. The passive system consists of accumulators which
inject coolant into the vessel when an accident occurs. The low pressure injection systems
and the high pressure injection systems also provide make-up water. The safety systems of a
boiling water reactor include the drywell and emergency core cooling systems. The reactor
core isolation cooling system pumps water into the reactor during a loss-of-coolant accident
while the low and high pressure core spray
systems provide make-up water. The drywell
encloses the reactor vessel, and the containment vessel encloses all the components of the
reactor. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspects all nuclear power plants to ensure
than these safety systems are adequate.
The economics of a nuclear power plant are
determined by the busbar cost and the operating capacity costs. The busbar cost is determined
by the construction cost, the cost of operating and maintaining the plant, and the cost of the
fuel. The operating capacity costs are determined by the availability of fuel and the capacity
of the plant.

Atlanta Police Department
Incident Number: 113651076-00

On Saturday 12/31/11 at approximately 1300 hours, I dispatched via radio to respond to 3071
lenox road regarding a missing person. Upon my arrival I was met by Mrs. Cynthia Jamison and
Mr. Kevin Jamison
The couple stated that they last spoke to Ms. Jamisons daughter (mr.jamisons step daughter)
ms. Stacey Nicole English on 12/25/11 at approx 2000 hours. The couple stated that they usually
talk to Ms. English several times a week and have been calling her numerous of times daily
without a returned phone call. After not hearing from Ms. English all week the couple responded
to her residence with their son Mr. Brian Jamison, and gained entry to her apartment with a spare
key. Upon entering the apartment, there was no sign of Ms. English however; her cell phone and

iPod were inside the apartment. They also located Ms. Englishs key fob, which allows her entry
into her apartment complex on the kitchen counter of the location. The reporting parties stated
that such behavior is very unusual for Ms. English because she never goes away anywhere
without her cell phone or iPod, and she would need her key fob to gain entry to her complex.
They also checked her parking spot at the location and discovered her white 2006 Volvo s60,
bearing GA. TAG#BPR4324, not parked at the location Mrs. Jamison provide information that
Ms. English suffered from HIV and was currently taking medication. Mrs. Jamison also advised
that her daughter had previously been hospitalized for attempting suicide (overdose) on 11/21/08.
While at the location Mrs. Jamison was able to contact a friend of Ms. English indentified as
Michelle Hamilton. Ms. Hamilton stated that she last saw Ms. English on Monday 12/25/11 and
stated that she felt as in someone was attempting to hurt her. She also stated that Ms. English was
acting out of character and began discussing the end of the world. Ms Hamilton was able to calm
her down and suggested that Ms. English should go out of town

Diary of Anne Frank
SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 1942 I'll begin from the moment I got you, the moment I saw you lying on
the table among my other birthday presents. (I went along when you were bought, but that
doesn't count.) On Friday, June 12, I was awake at six o'clock, which isn't surprising, since it was
my birthday. But I'm not allowed to get up at that hour, so I had to control my curiosity until
quarter to seven. When I couldn't wait any longer, I went to the dining room, where Moortje (the
cat) welcomed me by rubbing against my legs. A little after seven I went to Daddy and Mama
and then to the living room to open my presents, and you were the first thing I saw, maybe one of
my nicest presents. Then a bouquet of roses, some peonies and a potted plant. From Daddy and
Mama I got a blue blouse, a game, a bottle of grape juice, which to my mind tastes a bit like wine
(after all, wine is made from grapes), a puzzle, a jar of cold cream, 2.50 guilders and a gift
certificate for two books. I got another book as well, Camera Obscura (but Margot already has it,
so I exchanged mine for something else), a platter of homemade cookies (which I made myself,
of course, since I've become quite an expert at baking cookies), lots of candy and a strawberry

tart from Mother. And a letter from Grammy, right on time, but of course that was just a
coincidence. Then Hanneli came to pick me up, and we went to school. During recess I passed
out cookies to my teachers and my class, and then it was time to get back to work. I didn't arrive
home until five, since I went to gym with the rest of the class. (I'm not allowed to take part
because my shoulders and hips tend to get dislocated.) As it was my birthday, I got to decide
which game my classmates would play, and I chose volleyball. Afterward they all danced around
me in a circle and sang "Happy Birthday." When I got home, Sanne Ledermann was already
there. Ilse Wagner, Hanneli Goslar and Jacqueline van Maarsen came home with me after gym,
since we're in the same class. Hanneli and Sanne used to be my two best friends. People who saw
us together used to say, "There goes Anne, Hanne and Sanne." I only met Jacqueline van
Maarsen when I started at the Jewish Lyceum, and now she's my best friend. Ilse is Hanneli's
best friend, and Sanne goes to another school and has friends there. They gave me a beautiful
book, Dutch Sasas and Lesends, but they gave me Volume II by mistake, so I exchanged two
other books for Volume I. Aunt Helene brought me a puzzle, Aunt Stephanie a darling brooch
and Aunt Leny a terrific book: Daisy Goes to the Mountains. This morning I lay in the bathtub
thinking how wonderful it would be if I had a dog like Rin Tin Tin. I'd call him Rin Tin Tin too,
and I'd take him to school with me, where he could stay in the janitor's room or by the bicycle
racks when the weather was good.

What a busy day today! I never had a moments rest. The day started with my alarm
clock blaring at 7am. I had to be at the Smiths house by 8am to baby-sit. I really didnt want to
wake up so early on a Saturday, but Im saving money to buy a new iPod and couldnt say no to
an all-day babysitting job. When I arrived at the Smiths house, both kids were already
awake. Madison was watching cartoons in living room and Jacob was playing with his Legos in
his bedroom. The kids were hungry so I made them some oatmeal in the microwave and we all
ate breakfast together. We had to leave right after breakfast for Jacobs soccer practice. Luckily,
the Smiths only live a couple blocks from the soccer field so we just walked there. It was a lot of
fun watching Jacob play soccer. Hes very talented. I was worried that Madisonmight be bored,
but she stayed busy by playing her Gameboy while Jacob practiced. When practice was over, we

went back to the house to make lunch. Its always a breeze to make lunch for the Smith kids
because they love chicken nuggets and French fries. All I had to do was pull the food out of the
freezer and bake it in the oven. After lunch, I planned a special surprise for the kids...I took
them to see the new Disney movie. The movie theater is a few miles away from their house so I
had to call my mom to pick us up in her car and drive us there. The kids loved the movie; they
couldnt stop laughing. I have to admit that I thought it was pretty funny too. The only bad part
was that the theater had the air conditioning cranked up and it was freezing cold! My mom
picked us up again after the movie and took us back to the Smiths house. We had only been
back for a few minutes when Mrs. Smith came back home. I didnt expect her home so soon, but
she was back early because the power went out at her office. It worked out very well though
because as soon as I left the Smiths, Danielle called to see if I wanted to go to the mall. I
checked in at home to make sure it was ok and then met Danielle at her house. While we were at
the mall, we definitely shopped til we dropped. I bought a t-shirt, a sweater, a pair of jeans,
and some flip flops. I know that I wont need the flip flops for much longer since its already
October, but they were on clearance and I couldnt pass them up. Finally after all that shopping,
we headed home because I was exhausted. Today was a fun day, but I cant wait to sleep in
tomorrow!
