Discuss the operation of the Main Turbine and Control System controls, indications, and alarms. * Describe the start-up, normal operation, and shutdown of the Main Turbine and Control System, * Describe the interrelationships between the Main Turbine and Control System and other plant systems. 2.0 SYSTEM FUNCTION ‘The function of the Main Turbine and Control System is to convert the thermal energy of the high pressure steam to mechanical energy at the turbine shatt. 3.0 SYSTEM OVERVIEW ‘The Main Turbine and Control System includes the following components * Main Turbine * Main Steam Stop Valves * Governor Valves * Turbine Casing = Le January 5, 2000 National Power Corporation Mak-Ban Geothermal Power Plant Student Guide — Rev. 0 Main Turbine and Control System Page 4 3.2 Turbine Blades Turbine Rotor Turbine Bearings Turbine Turning Gear Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation Turbine Governing System Emergency and Protective Devices Major System Interconnections Turbine Lube Oil System The Turbine Lube Oil System provides clean cool lube oil to the main turbine bearings, High pressure jacking oil is supplied to each bearing during low speed operations. Main Steam System The Main Steam System supplies high pressure steam to the turbine on each unit Condensate System ‘Steam exhausted from the turbine is directed to the main condenser. Turbine Drains System The Turbine Drains System removes condensed steam from low points in the turbine casing. The drains also allow warming of the casing during a cold start- up. Turbine Gland Steam System The Turbine Gland Steam System supplies steam to the main turbine shaft seals. Main Generator, Excitation and Protection System The main turbines supply the power to turn the rotor of the associated generator. Primary Flowpath The main steam lead from the steam separator divides into left-hand and right-hand lines, each of which supplies a main steam stop valve. Primary steam enters the turbine through the main steam stop valves and governor valves. 8) January 5, 2000 National Power Corporation | Mak-Ban Geothermal Power Plant ‘Student Guide — Rev. 0 Main Turbine and Control System _ Page 5 Steam flows through each main steam stop valve and governing valve to the midpoint of the turbine casing. Governor valves regulate the steam flow to the first stage nozzle openings. Steam leaving the nozzles is directed through the remaining four turbine stages, with the steam flowing from the center of the turbine towards each end, After exiting the last stage, steam exhausts to the condenser through outlet ports. 4.0 SYSTEM COMPONENTS The Main Turbine and Control System and subsystems consist of the following components: Main Turbine Main Steam Stop Valves Governor Valves Turbine Casing Turbine Blades Turbine Rotor Turbine Bearings Turbine Turning Gear Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation Turbine Governing System Emergency and Protective Devices 4.1 Main Turbine 4.1.4 Function The function of each main turbine is to convert the thermal energy of the steam to mechanical energy to tum the turbine shaft. 4.41.2 Location The main turbine is located on the turbine generator level (3° floor) of each unit. Q January 5, 2000 National Power Corporation Mak-Ban Geothermal Power Plant ‘Student Guide — Rev. 0 Main Turbine and Control System Page 6 4.1.3 Description ‘The Mak Ban Geothermal Plant C contains two (one for Unit No. 5 and one for Unit No. 6), five stage, double-flow exhaust type turbines. Each turbine rotates at 3600 rpm and has an output of 55,000 KW. Design steam pressure is 10 kg/cm* and design temperature is 260°C at the governing valves. The rated steam pressure is 6.68 kg/cm? and the rated steam temperature is 162.3°C at the governing valves. 4.2 Main Steam Stop Valves 4.2.1 Function The function of the main steam stop valves is to quickly isolate the associated main turbine from the main steam supply header in event of a turbine trip. 4.2.2 Location The main steam stop valves are located on the second level, below the governor end of the turbine. “ge LL January 5, 2000 National Power Corporation Mak-Ban Geothermal Power Plant Student Guide - Rev. 0 Main Turbine and Control System Page 7 4.2.3. Description There is one main steam stop valve installed in each branch (left-hand and right-hand steam piping). Each main steam stop valve is a hydraulically operated swing check type valve. Each valve is equipped with an internal pilot valve designed to pass sufficient steam to bring the turbine up to normal speed during start-up. The valve body is made of cast steel to withstand the pressure shock when an emergency trip occurs. The main steam stop valves are not used to regulate steam flow and they are either fully open or fully closed. The main steam stop valves remain fully open until the turbine is shutdown or until an emergency, such as a turbine overspeed condition, trips the valves closed
