1. Introduction:
This document is the requirements specification for Emergency Lighting. This project
2

is to provide engineering design and validation of the lights when there is a power cut and
helps in providing enough light to solve the power problem or evacuate the building.
Emergency lighting is often referred as egress lighting.

2. Abbreviations:

EL stands for Emergency Lighting

LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes
NFPA stands for National Fire Protection Association
IBC stands for International Building Code
ICEL stands for Industry Committee Emergency Lighting
LIF stands for Lighting Industry Federal

3. Product Functional Requirements:

Emergency Lights work on the principle of automatic switching on when a building
experiences a power failure. As lamp technology has evolved from incandescent to
fluorescent, and more recently to lighting based on light emitting diode (LED) etc, the
potential energy savings have motivated many facilities to accelerate the replacement of
older luminaires.
Some emergency lights are battery backup as they are built in and they use different
batteries or generator systems. Batteries are most commonly made of Lead-Calcium
which last for a maximum span of 5-10 years or more due to continuous charging of
battery.

4. Product Performance Requirements:

The corresponding products of Emergency Lighting of luminous intensity of

1 foot candle or 1 lumen/ sq. m of light.
It responses as faster as 0.5sec providing a full emergency illuminance.
The emergency lighting shall be tested for 30 seconds monthly and 90
minutes annually.

5. Product Environmental Requirements:

These products are capable to operate in the temperature ranges of 20C-850C by
having a relative humidity of 85% which is non condensing having above sea level of
1000meters.

These LED lighting are of different kinds from which one of them is Conventional
LED lighting which has high and low ambient temperatures. For high ambient
temperatures from -5C up to +50C (type H50) and for low ambient temperatures and a
wide temperature range from -40C up to +50C (type T40).

6. Reliability Requirements:
This product shall have a reliability that should not exceed 5 failures over a period of
10 years.
Assuming the service time period per day to be 5minutes then
5mins/day*365Days/year+90mins = 319hrs of service time for
10years
Life test is done by considering the service time of the juice extractor to be 609hrs and
number of failures to be 3 over a period of 5years then the time taken for the
occurrence of 1 failure is calculated below 319hrs/5Failures=63hrs

7. Quality Requirements:
The acceptance quality shall be less than 0.5% defect upon delivery. These products
are made of different qualities due to which their might be a change in the luminous
intensity.
U.S fine safety codes which require a minimum of 90minutes on battery which
drives a power outage along path of egress.

8. Standard Requirements:
The product shall meet NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), IBC
(International Building Code) and National Electricity Code standards.

9. EHS (Environment, Health , Safety) Requirements:

The user safety is the most important factor to be considered during the designing
process of the emergency lighting.

Recycled materials such as plastic, glass are used for building of the reflector which
are placed behind the light source.
Fire proof materials should be manufactured.
The wires used in the construction should be resistant to any power failure.
Incorrect use of any emergency devices during a power failure releases carbon
monoxide which causes poisoning, inhailing of the smoke , burning of skin ,etc.
which causes a great harm to both health and the environment .
