COURSE INFORMATION

Course Name: Dynamics

Course Code: BDA 20103

Credit: 3 hours
Lecture: 2 hours
Tutorial: 2 hours
Prerequisite Course: Statics

GOALS
The aim of this subject is to give a comprehensive understanding of
kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies especially in
mechanical engineering components and engineering systems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this course, students are able to:

(1) analyze the position, velocity and acceleration of particles and rigid
bodies planar kinematics analyses in various coordinate systems (C4,
LO1)
(2) select the appropriate law of motion to solve kinetics problems related
to forces and acceleration of particles and rigid bodies (C4, LO1)

(3) execute the principle of work and energy also general particle impact
analysis procedures to solve kinetics problem on particles and rigid
bodies (P3, LO4)
(4) demonstrate the ability in implementing comprehensive analytical
methods to problem case study of mechanical engineering problem
through student team work. (A3, LO5)

SYNOPSIS
This course will mainly cover two-dimensional planar kinematics of
particles, kinetics of particles, kinematics of rigid bodies and kinetics of
rigid bodies. Various mechanical engineering applications are discussed in
the form of example problems. The topics covered in kinematics of
particles are basic rectilinear and curvilinear kinematics, vector position,
velocity and acceleration of particles and planar coordinate systems. The
interaction of force, mass and acceleration, energy method, impulse and
impact are introduced in Kinetics of Particles. After introducing kinematics
and kinetics of particles, the application in rigid bodies are discussed
under the topic kinematics and kinetics of rigid bodies. For a
comprehensive implementation of dynamics, a group project assignment is
the medium for students working in team work.

NEWTONS LAWS OF MOTION

What is Newtons Laws of Motion?
How Newton's Laws of Motion described the flight of an aircraft?

NEWTONS LAWS OF MOTION

First Law
Every object persists in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight
line unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed on
it.
Second Law
Force is equal to the change in momentum (mV) per change in time. For
a constant mass, force equals mass times acceleration.
F = ma
Third Law

For every action, there is an equal and opposite re-action.
