VMS students put on engineer thinking caps

Voorhees Middle School sixth graders learn engineering, entrepreneurship in unique way

Several sixth-grade students at
Voorhees Middle School are getting their creative juices flowing
as they work on a project that involves going through the process
of what an engineer is and designing.
Its called the Dyson Foundation Project from the James
Dyson Foundation, a two-week
process that was started by James
Dyson, creator of the Dyson vacuum. The students started the project on Oct. 10 and will finish on
Oct. 24. After the students finish,
they will showcase their creations to their parents on Oct. 25.
According to its website, the
James Dyson Foundation is dedicated to encouraging young people to think differently, make mistakes, invent and realize their engineering potential.
Voorhees Middle School librarian Stacey Fulton got word of this
project from her library resource
e-mail list. She thought it was
something the students could
benefit from since they had just
read the book Howtoon: Tools of
Mass Construction over the
summer. The book is about a
brother and sister using everyday
objects to invent toys that readers
can build.

Basically, the reasoning was
to get kids thinking about creating, building and making, Fulton said. This was a natural marriage of the two.
She approached language arts
teacher Julie Zielinski who was

intrigued by the idea and, soon

after, two of her language arts
classes started the project. Each
student received an ideas box,
which came with a Dyson product, DVDs and a booklet of lessons. According to Zielinski, the

DVDs show how Dyson got started and shows engineers from the
company at work. She also said
the ideas box covers multiple
standards and gets students to
think with their heads and hands.

not about math and science, she

said. It is also about enhancing
communication skills that students lack.
Besides learning the process of
an engineer and designing, the
students are coming up with
ways to change a product to make
it work better and figuring out
how to work collaboratively in a
productive way.
I had students write down in a
journal what invention they
could not live without, Zielinski
said. Next, they found that invention using the school databases and had to find the inventor
and the date it was invented.
After that, groups I assigned
came up with an object that is either at school or at home that
they all thought could be a better
one. They sketched their designs
individually and then began
working on improving an item.
Zielinskis students are just as
excited as her and Fulton about
the whole process.
What I learned so far is that
there are certain inventions that I
thought I could not live without,
and I learned that most inventions came from mistakes, student Brooke Elwell said. I like
how Dyson created a new fan and

When Gisele DiNatale created
the Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation with her husband Mario in
honor of her daughter Alicia in
2002, she didnt think what the
foundation would be like years
down the road.

Fourteen years later, the foundation has grown to heights DiNatale never dreamed of, helping

rights that our forefathers
fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important inalienable rights that we have as Americans, if not the most important inalienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for independence in the 1700s based on the rallying cry of no taxation without representation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representation.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended
or ensured voting rights:

Constitution gave voting rights to non-

General Election will be held Tuesday,

on the ticket as well.

Veterans Wall of Honor ceremony set for Oct. 24

"Youve never lived until youve almost
died. For those who fought for it, life has a
flavor the protected will never know.
Anonymous Vietnam Veteran
Voorhees Township is proud to honor
those who fought for our freedom with the
addition of more veterans to our Veterans
Wall of Honor. The ceremony will be held
on Monday, Oct. 24 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
with a program in the Macy's Court on the
lower level of the Voorhees Town Center.
The Wall of Honor is located in Town Hall
and will be viewed immediately following
the program.
We are proud of the men and women
who wore the uniform of the U.S. military.
It is fitting that these brave men and
women be honored on a Veterans Wall because they stood on the "Wall of Freedom"
to risk their lives for our great grandparents, grandparents, parents and generations to follow.
This year, 37 veterans will be added to

the Wall, bringing

the total to 333. We
expect the Wall of
Honor to be a lasting tribute that will

Vote Mike Friedman
for township committee
In an election year filled with
so much disappointment, I find
excitement and hope in the fact
that I will be casting my vote to
re-elect Mike Friedman to the
Voorhees Township Committee. I
urge every Voorhees resident, regardless of political affiliation, to
do the same.
Whether you know it or not,
Friedman has been working tirelessly for you and your family to
ensure that Voorhees government is run more transparently,
ethically, and responsibly since
the day he took office in 2011. Before Mike was first elected, the
Voorhees was controlled by a oneparty monopoly. Back then our
property taxes increased by an average of more than 6 percent each
year. With no minority member of
the committee to keep the majority honest, the government simply
spent more money each year, en-

riching their political allies and

handing out township jobs like
they were candy on Halloween.
Since Mike has taken office, the
rate of tax growth has dropped to
about 2 percent annually and he
has never voted to increase our
property taxes, not even once. We
cant afford to go back.
Mike fought against taxpayer
funded health care for politicians
at a cost of more than $125,000 per
year, and he made them stop. Mike
has pushed for greater public safety by growing our Class II police
officer numbers, making sure
every school has a cop to protect
our kids, and introducing anti-solicitation and peddling laws. Mike
has fought for non-tax revenues
such as sponsorships for parks
and fields in town so we can pass
the savings on to taxpayers.
Voorhees taxpayers deserve the
best, and Friedman is the best our
local government has to offer
(which is probably why he was
named 2015 Citizen of the Year by
the Voorhees Rotary Club). He is

a great representative for all of

Committeeman Michael Friedman traveled to the Republican

Frankly, I was shocked since
Mr. Friedman claims he is independent minded. To verify the accuracy of the advertisement asserting Friedman served as a

Normans Law
spreads far and wide

Just over a year
ago, my rescue
dog Norman and
I sat outside of
a soaked parking lot trying to
stay dry under a
tent that was too
small to enclose
the excitement
for an innovative
piece of public
policy. It was there, in front of the
Camden County Animal Shelter,
I unveiled Normans Law, which
was progressive legislation that
ostensibly banned all stores in
our county from selling puppy
mill dogs and cats. I am happy to
announce this model legislation
has been adopted by jurisdictions
throughout New Jersey and the
country.
Last year, based on objective research and analysis done by local
advocates, the Humane Society
and pet owners, we wanted to ensure county residents had healthy
and happy families after they
adopt or buy a pet. That said, we
know that puppy mill dogs and
cats spend much of their lives
in small cages and female dogs
are bred as frequently as possible. Throughout the crafting of
this legislation I heard the horror
stories from pet owners who either knowingly or unknowingly
bought a puppy mill dog. Based
on those traumatic experiences
and commentary from across the
country, and right here in Camden County, there was no doubt
in my mind we had to act on this
issue.
As a dog owner and elected
official I wanted to ensure our
neighbors have the ability to
adopt healthy dogs and cats and
never have to worry about where
they come from or how they are
raised. In Camden County, almost 80 percent of our more than
180,000 households own a cat
or a dog; and I can tell you from

firsthand experience
that when our myriad
animal shelters open
their doors on the
weekends they are
flooded with prospective pet owners. It was
imperative that the
Board of Freeholders
act on this because we
know these animals
are not merely products, they are cherished family
members.
I can tell you Norman, my Labmix, is as synonymous with the
Nash family as I am. He is beloved by neighbors and, more
than likely, his well-being will
be asked about more so than my
own. As pet owners we develop
a special bond with our dogs and
cats that make them critical to our
households.
After a year of traveling the
state and working to spread the
word with help from advocates
and activists from my home town
of Cherry Hill I am happy to report that just about every town in
the county has adopted a localized version of Normans Law.
Furthermore, there has been significant interest statewide, with
Ocean, Monmouth, Middlesex
and Mercer counties all adopting this important piece of legislation. Furthermore, more than
150 other jurisdictions have taken
up the challenge of eliminating
puppy and cat mills from their
respective communities.

1.) While Township Committee has
made significant progress recently in
lowering the rate of tax increases in our
budget, it wasnt always that way. We
have plenty more work to do in this area
to stem the tide of good, hard-working,
residents who are fleeing our town after
their kids graduate high school for other
more tax-friendly towns in Burlington
County, Ocean County or even out of
state. It is incumbent upon committee to
do everything possible to alleviate this
burden on our residents.
During the nine-year period prior to
my election in 2010, when my opponents
party had absolute 5-0 control of committee, the average tax increase per year was
6.3 percent without a single year of taxes
being reduced or remaining flat. By comparison, the last six years since I have
been elected to committee, taxes have
only increased an average of 2.65 percent
annually with one year of taxes being reduced and another year of taxes remaining flat. This is not a coincidence, but is
the result of having a taxpayer watchdog

about entrepreneurship from
Aaron Krause, a Voorhees resident and inventor of numerous
household products including his
most popular one, Scrub Daddy
a round sponge with a cut-out
smiley face.
Krause was featured on Shark
Tank in 2012, and his business
has exploded since. Scrub Daddy
is the highest grossing product to
date on Shark Tank with
estimated retail sales of $100 million.
My students loved meeting
Mr. Krause and learned a lot from
him and the process, Zielinski
said. They were on the edge of
their seats listening to him tell
his story.

Krause loved meeting the students as well and hearing them

talk about their ideas.
The underlying tone in the entire country right now is supporting entrepreneurship and inventors, something that really hasnt
been pushed until recently,
Krause explained. The creativity
aspect of children and kids at
young ages, their minds are completely open.
Krause introduced the students to his new products that
havent been released to the public yet.
He also talked about patents
and monopolies, but didnt have
to fully explain what they are because some of the students already knew.
I was definitely expecting to
come in and actually give them a
lot more depth on what monopolies and patents are and a little bit
about the aspects of starting a
business, he said. It looks like
Shark Tank is paying off and a
lot of kids are watching it.

about his successes. Hes had

some bumps on his journey, and
he let the students know its not

DiNatale never forgot how Alicia felt during those times and
channeled those feelings into the

p.m. Ashley was a caring, vibrant
young woman who was very involved in our community, coaching field hockey at Voorhees Middle School and in the Voorhees
Girls Lacrosse Program. On June
29, 2012, Ashley passed away at

the tender age of 20 after being involved in an ATV accident. The

foundation carries on Ashleys
spirit by fostering volunteerism
and involvement in the Voorhees

We met Michael Friedman the

first time he was running for office. He rang our doorbell, and we
had a very pleasant conversation
with him regarding his politics
and plans for Voorhees.
In the interim, he has helped
our neighbors and us several
times with issues in our development. We found him to be always
quick to respond and willing to do
whatever was necessary to fix the
problem.
He has always made himself
readily available by quickly responding to e-mails. He truly represents his constituents and always has our best interests in
mind.

politics disgusting and vile.
Trump has attacked every ethnic
group as well as women and even

bragging about sexually assaulting women. Mr. Friedmans feeble
attempt to blow off his trip to
Cleveland as a Trump Delegate
stating, Donald Trump isnt running for Voorhees Township Committee, while not locker room
banter, is far from denouncing
Friedmans connection to Trump.
Republicans far and wide have
condemned Trump for his unscrupulous tactics. What are you
waiting for, Mike? Need the permission of your Voorhees Town
Hall invitee, Chris Christie?

for Birthday Bash

are sent to critically ill teenagers
throughout the country. The kits
include arts and crafts and
games. They have also installed
teen lounges in various hospitals
for teenagers to hang out, rooms
that include televisions, DVD
players and video games.
DiNatale chose a superhero
theme for the bash this year to
honor those teenagers who are
the real heroes.
Our theme is not all superheroes wear capes, she explained. We will have photos of
kids letting people know that they
are stronger, and its fascinating
what they came up with. You
think they say Im stronger than
the Hulk, but the ones we got
werent like that.
One of those teenagers is Dakota, who is in isolation at a hospital
for four to six weeks. Her photo
says, Im stronger than my surroundings.
I visited her and literally her
surroundings are a wall one foot
in front of her, walls one foot to
each side, DiNatale said. She
cant get out into the hallway. I
thought, my goodness, you have

to be strong if you can be

stronger than that little space you
have to stay inside for six weeks.
DiNatale was so inspired by
Dakota, she now writes a weekly
blog for the foundations website.
Were empowered because of
the validation that there is such a
need for this, and we are continuing to do this great work, DiNatale said. What it does more than
anything, it validates our mission
statement and the vision we had
14 years ago. I believe Alicias
hand is all over this.
This year, Lenny Wood, managing member of Wade, Long, Wood
& Long, LLC and chairman of the
Order Sons of Italy in America,
New Jersey chapter, has been
named 2016 Victorious Community Champion. He is also on the
foundations Board of Trustees.
DiNatale said Wood was crucial
in getting ARVF to be one of the
charities to which OSIA would
donate.
Were honoring him because
he had done so much for our foundation, she said. We are always
looking for talent, treasures or
time. Lenny does 100 percent and
more in each of those areas. He
really is a hero for us.
