Partition of India

After World War II, Britain started losing its power. With massive war debts in
their hands, the British started lowering their expenses. As a solution, British let go
and gave up on their distant colonies that cost a lot to govern and control. One of them
was India.
Before India Independence, Mohandas K. Gandhi started his campaign of
nonviolence civil disobedience. His actions were based on Satyagraha. Indians
refused to obey British laws, purchased British goods, paid taxes, and participated in
political events. Salt March was one of the important events that happened during the
time of the protest. Consequently, British earnings dropped dramatically. British had
hard time trying to keep all their businesses in India running. British also struggled to
avoid the jail from bursting since many Indians were under arrested for joining the
protest. After the announcement of Indias independence and partition, India turned
into chaos. Without British ruling power, the two main religions in India, Islam and
Hinduism, fought for power even though both the Congress party and the Muslim
League were working towards India independence together before. Muslims
demanded it own country because of the fear of being oppressed and ruled under
Hindus. Because of religious difference, India was to be divided into two countries:
Pakistan for Muslim and India for Hindu. The fights between Muslims and Hindus
were found all over India. The hostility between the two religions led to killing and
massacre including the emigrants. Some Muslims were forced to convert to Hindus,
and vice versa to avoid getting killed. For the sake of independence, around a million
of people were sacrificed. The conflict between Muslims and Hindus didnt end after
the division. India and Pakistan fought over the territories along their borderline. One
of them was Kashmir. The reason why was because there was more Muslim

population in Kashmir, but Hindu was the one who had power. The two countries still
fight over Kashmir until today even though the United Nation had arranged them a
cease-fire. Having learned from the past, this problem should be resolved as soon as
possible in order to avoid any more losses and damages. Both India and Pakistan have
shown that they have nuclear weapons, which are capable of destroying at least a
whole city and creating environmental effects in the long run. With nuclear weapons
in their hands, there a possibility that India and Pakistan may declare war on each
other, which may also lead to bigger wars like World War.
On the surface, Indias independence was an occasion to celebrate with
tremendous joy, but under that surface, Indias independence was full of losses,
bloodshed, and hatred that continued to live on to this very day.
