1. The speed of a separately excited dc motor is controlled by a single-phase full


wave converter. The field current is also controlled by a single-phase full wave
converter. The ac supply voltage to the armature and field converter is one phase,
208 V, 50 Hz. The armature circuit resistance is Ra = 0.5 , the field circuit
resistance is Rf = 345 , and the motor voltage constant is Kv = 0.71 V/A rad/s.
The viscous friction is negligible. The armature and field current are continuous
and ripple free. If the delay angle of the converter in the armature circuit a = 45o
and the armature current of the motor is Ia = 55 A. Determine:
a) The torque developed Td.
b) The speed .
c) The input power factor of the drive.
2. A separately excited dc motor is supplied by a three-phase full-wave bridge
rectifier circuit whose line-to-line voltage is 220 V, 50 Hz. The motor's armature
resistance is 0.15 . The motor supplies a load at a speed of 800 rpm with an
output torque of 300 N m. The armature current is 90 A under these conditions.
a) Find the firing angle of the rectifier bridge.
b) If the firing angle is adjusted to 30 degrees, find the motor's speed.
c) Draw the torque-speed characteristic of the motor in both cases.
3. The speed of a 20 HP, 300 V, 1800 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled
by a three-phase full wave converter. The field current is also controlled by a
three-phase full wave converter. The ac supply voltage to the armature and field
converter is a three phase, Y-connected, 208 V, 50 Hz. The armature circuit
resistance is Ra = 0.35 , the field circuit resistance is Rf = 250 , and the motor
voltage constant is Kv = 1.15 V/A rad/s. The viscous friction is negligible. The
armature and field current are continuous and ripple free. Determine:

a) The delay angle of the converter in the armature circuit a, if the motor
supplies the rated power at the rated speed.
b) The no-load speed if the delay angles are the same in (a) and the armature
current in at no-load is 10% of the rated value.
c) The speed regulation.
4. The speed of a 20 HP, 300 V, 900 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled by
a three-phase semi-converter. The field current is also controlled by a three-phase
semi-controlled converter. The ac supply voltage to the armature and field
converter is a three phase, Y connected, 208 V, 50 Hz. The armature circuit
resistance is Ra = 0.15 , the field circuit resistance is Rf = 145 , and the motor
voltage constant is Kv = 1.15 V/A rad/s. The viscous friction is negligible. The
armature and field current are continuous and ripple free.
a) If the field converter is operated at the maximum field current and the
developed torque is Td = 106 N.m. at 750 rpm, determine the delay angle of
the armature converter a.
b) If the field converter is operated at the maximum field current and the
developed torque is Td = 108 N.m. and the delay angle of the armature
converter a = 30 o, determine the speed .
c) For the same load demand as in (b), determine the delay angle of the field
circuit converter if the speed has to be increased to 1800 rpm.
d) Draw the torque-speed characteristic of the motor in all cases.
5. A dc series motor is powered by a dc-dc converter from a 600 V dc source. The
armature resistance is Ra = 0.03 , the field circuit resistance is Rf = 0.05 , and
the back emf constant is Kv = 15.27 mV/A rad/s. The average armature current Ia=
450 A. The armature current is continuous and has negligible ripple. If the duty
cycle of the dc-dc converter is 75%. Determine:
a) The input power from the source.
b) The equivalent input resistance of the dc-dc converter drive.
c) The motor speed.

d) The developed torque of the motor.


6. The drive is operated in regenerative braking of a dc series motor. The dc supply
voltage is 600 V, the armature resistance is Ra = 0.03 , the field circuit resistance
is Rf = 0.05 , and the back emf constant is Kv = 12 mV/A rad/s. The average
armature current Ia= 350 A. The armature current is continuous and has negligible
ripple. If the duty cycle of the dc-dc converter is 50%. Determine:
a) The average voltage across the dc-dc converter.
b) The power generated to the dc supply Pg.
c) The equivalent load resistance of the motor acting as a generator Req.
d) The minimum permissible braking speed min.
e) The maximum permissible braking speed max.
f) The motor speed.
7. A 5kW DC series motor is to be used in a variable-speed drive controlled by a
chopper. The motor field and armature resistances both equal 0.2 . With light
load on the motor shaft, the armature runs at 3000 rpm and takes 8 A from a 48 V
supply. Determine the armature voltage constant kv. With the supply above the
frequency above the chopper set to 250 Hz, and the on-time to 3.5ms, the average
armature current is found to be 80A. Calculate the values of armature speed and
torque.
8. A 40 hp, 230 V, 3500 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled by a linear
converter of gain K2 = 200. The moment of inertia of the motor load is J = 0.156
N.m/rad/s, viscous friction constant is negligible, the armature resistance is Ra =
0.045 , and armature inductance is La = 730 mH. The back emf constant is Kv =
0.502 V/A rad/s and the field current is maintained constant at If = 1.25A.
a) Obtain the open-loop transfer function (s)/Vr(s) and (s)/TL(s) for the
motor.
b) Calculate the motor steady-state speed if the reference voltage is Vr = 1 V
and the load torque is 60% of the rated value.
9. For the motor in Problem 14

a) Obtain the closed-loop transfer function (s)/Vr(s) and (s)/TL(s) for the
motor.
b) If the amplification of speed sensor is K1 = 3 mV/rad/s. Calculate the motor
steady-state speed if the reference voltage is Vr = 1 V and the load torque is
60% of the rated value.
c) Determine the gain of the converter K2 to limit the speed regulation at full
load to 1%.
10. A 60 hp, 230 V, 1750 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled by a converter
with a gain K2 = 150 with a closed loop feed-back. The back emf constant is Kv =
0.81 V/A rad/s and the field current is maintained constant at If = 1.25A. the
armature resistance is Ra = 0.045 and the viscous friction constant is B = 0.3
N.m/rad/s. the amplification of the speed sensor is K1 = 96 mV/rad/s.
a) Determine the reference voltage Vr to drive the motor at the rated speed.
b) If the reference voltage is kept unchanged, determine the speed at which the
motor develop the rated torque.
c) If the load torque is increased 15% of the rated value and the reference
voltage is reduced by 20%, determine the motor speed.
