Introduction

Design
process of defining the system OR process of making
changes in order to get the best output
may involve the search for minimum or maximum value
of some parameters that may be called objective
function

Analysis
Process of determining the response of a specified
system to its environment: a sub-problem in design

DEPARTMENT OF AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

10

Introduction

Relationship between design and analysis

For the design to be acceptable must satisfy a set

of specified requirements called constraints
DEPARTMENT OF AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

11

Optimisation Category

Can be defined as the process to find the condition

that give the optimum value of a function
Non-Gradient Search Method
Direct Search Algorithms, Zeroth Order Method
Considers only objective function
Partial derivatives of objective function are not considered

Gradient Search Method

Indirect Search Algorithms, Descent method
Partial derivatives of objective function are considered

Heuristic Method
Evolutionary Algorithm

Introduction

if a point x corresponds to the minimum value of function f(x), the

same point also corresponds to the maximum value of the negative of
the function, f(x).
The optimum solution will remain the same for the case of:
Multiplication (or division) of f(x) by a positive constant c.
Addition (or subtraction) of a positive constant c to (or from) f(x).

18

Objective Function

The criterion with respect to which the design is

optimized when expressed as a function of the
design variables, is known as the criterion or merit
or objective function.
